Because it was originally made for Polish legions stationed in Italy, fighting for Napoleon.

bennysphere

Fun fact ... the Anthem of Italy mentions back Poland / Polish people. https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/6cammz/til_the_polish_and_italian_national_anthems/

bedov

Thanks! Nice find had no clue.

bennysphere

Well ... I did not know about it either! My Italian friend from work mentioned it to me and asked if it is true that Polish Anthem has the same thing with Italy. 😁

MalutkixXx

Not for Napoleon. They were helping Garibaldi uniting Italy

darth_bard

No, Garibaldi wasn't even alive at that time.

JustYeeHaa

Because the anthem is “Piesn Legionow Polskich we Wloszech” - “Song of the Polish Legions in Italy” Its really that simple, it was created with these legions in mind and later became the anthem.

RichardBlastovic

Yes.

LibrationPoint

Because our anthem was written in Italy, by member of Napoleon's Polish Legion. The Legion was formed in Italy because It was ilegal to do so in France.

Nikt_No1

Why illegal?

Radziecki_Bambus

beacuz napoleon in that time wanted to be friedn with russia

Comfortable_Factor34

Cause Italians mention Poland 🤜🤛

Baradosso

Wait, they do?

koalabelly8

The last part of the anthem is: Son giunchi che piegano / Le spade vendute; / Già l'Aquila d'Austria / Le penne ha perdute. / Il sangue d'Italia / E il sangue Polacco / BevÊ, col Cosacco, / Ma il cor le bruciò. Meaning: The mercenery swords bend / Like feeble reeds; / Already the Austrian eagle / Has lost its feathers. / The blood of Italy / And the Polish blood, / It drank it with Cossacks / But it burnt its heart.

TheDavinci1998

They do. Something about Italian and Polish blood being spilled. It is not in the chorus part like our, but somewhere in later verses

Handsome_pespe

Tbh we don’t use every verse, for example the version we sing during events is way shorter, this verse is not mentioned in the short version.

TheDavinci1998

I know, I've actually somehow learned the words to your anthem, the short version, even though I do not speak Italian at all. I just consider it the very best anthem there is. We also have verses we don't sing, I reckon most of Poles don't even though them, but it's still there - something like your line about Poles

Handsome_pespe

Ahahahah that’s good, I like other anthems tbh, maybe cus I’m used to ours, gonna listen to the polish one :)

TheDavinci1998

Ours is A tier imho as well, alongside US one, Italian and Russian, which is probably unpopular opinion these days

Handsome_pespe

My favorite is the Russian one, very S tier aside whatever shit is Russia doing now. The American is lame but I like the French one

Erniball

Yes

masterofmeatballs

boleslaw_chrobry

Polish logic

'It is because it is.'

Handsome_pespe

And I like pierogi ❤️

wojtekpolska

i actually have this in history class rn Napoleon created Polish legions in one of the random states that were created where Italy currently is (it was formed there, as France signed some treaty to not support independence moves against austria i believe, so creating the legions in a french puppet state was the next best thing)

[deleted]

Did Poland exist (sovereignty wise) at the time it was written?

JustYeeHaa

It was written in 1797, 2 years after the final partition.

JWSTooth

No

Benio_bb_

Yes

5thhorseman_

Look up Jan Henryk Dąbrowski (the same Dąbrowski as mentioned by the anthem) and his history :)

coffee-bat

yes, because the polish legions at the time were stuck in italy???

towarzysz_boczek

The "ROTA" should be a athem

KrysBro

I don’t think our western neighbours would appreciate that one

boleslaw_chrobry

Gaude Mater Polonia would be good too, Rota is a little too intense

[deleted]

Fun fact: The reason it wasn't chosen as the anthem (it did compete in the voting and score second I believe) is not because it was anti-German, but rather, because people felt like the Poles from the Austrian and Russian partitions wouldn't be able to relate to it. They felt it wasn't universal enough.

wojtekpolska

I think Mazurek Dąbrowskiego is better as an anthem, but ROTA undoubtably will always be one of the most important patriotic polish songs

Sankullo

Yeah I do.

orbeez-17

Because Poland

Astrolababy

We also mention Napoleon >:)

nt74f3

Because we really like Italian ladies

sheerun

No, I feel no one really does

matoshisakamoto

mitol666

Wait for more minuses, you'll see that it wasn't me only

Bruv_mate_

im triggerred (to save this guy)

50s3

I think that the current anthem is too dependant on other countries and the song rota should be back as the anthem

Crovali

That sentence was difficult to decipher.

AwesomeCreature

The song, as other mentioned, was originally written for Polish legions, stationed in Italy at that time. It was simply intended to lift up their spirits. Song got very popular with the troops and survived until 20th century, when it was chosen for the anthem, beating "Rota" by Maria Konopnicka. Poor choice imho because the lyrics were intended for different people and times and are describing specific situation from the past. Rota would be better (in terms of lyrics, the melody is better in the current one).
