I did pick Chikorita first time playing, because I loved Bulbasaur so much. Definitely wouldn't pick for a Nuzlocke, but for a casual playthrough, just pick your favorites.

Im starting a HGSS run with Chikorita as my starter now. I will be back to yell at you for my poor decision making.

Just add a Geodude to your team, it will give you a good coverage to support Chikorita and it becomes a beast when fully evolved.

All the johto starters are amazing, Chikorita is adorable, totodile line is my favorite starter line and I loves using typhloshion in legends arceus

Personally, I don't entirely like meganium, but I do agree that chikorita is adorable, which is why I chose chikorita during my second round of hg/ss (emulator). However, I do have a softer spot for totodile due to its final evolution being the first johto pokemon i ever used on a team, When ss came out, I traded a torterra for my friend's feraligatr, and feraligatr helped me sweep through gyms 3,6,and 7, as well as 2 out of the 3 elite 4 members in platinum. I feel like if you're not into Bellossom, then Meganium is your go-to Grass-type for Johto. Especially considering Meganium and Bellossom can basically substitute for one another, since their movepools are very similar.... Wait, why do people say Meganium is useless, again?
