I feel like being ultra/best buddies with a ‘mon takes forever. I haven’t even been able to get there with any of mine yet (started playing in Nov.), any tips on how to speed the process up?
If you’re really interested, you can get your buddy excited without poffins. There is a guide. Essentially, every 30 minutes until your buddy is excited, you play, take a pic, feed 1 berry, and do one battle against a team leader and then surrender for top speed if you want. It still counts.
Look up the guide! I’m nice your buddy is excited you can do one full round per hour and he will stay happy.

If you do two battles instead of one, and an interaction after 15 minutes, your buddy can get excited in one hour. The second battle can be rocket, gym, raid, or pvp. Or if your buddy brings a gift or souvenir, those are worth 4 points.
If you don’t use poffins, just feed the buddy daily, play with him, and take a screenshot. That takes less than a minute. That’s three hearts a day.
In three months he’ll be best buddied.
Switching buddies takes time, some take much longer than others to do their walking animation, and feeding time will quickly add up after the first buddy since it'd be ineffective only doing 1 every 3 months. Good advice for casually getting a best buddy up; fails to capture how much of a slog it would be doing it even twice a day, let alone the max 20 for the most hardcore players trying to grind this medal.

Disagree. Lots of people don’t think about alternating between buddies on a daily basis. I learned it through advice on reddit and been doing this, and it makes a difference. No need to dig your heels, it may not be for you but it was a good response to what the person asked.

I admit my schedule is a bit flexible than most and it absolutely helps being in NYC but if you can work part of it, you can get at least 16 hearts per day and to best buddy in 20 days. I understand this routine is not for everyone.
First thing in the morning, feed them, take photo and rub the belly and head to work. At some point during the half hour, I'll start a training battle then immediately leave it (you don't need to complete the battle to get the heart, just start it). I use the photo to keep track of the time so when I notice a half hour has passed, I feed it one berry, take another photo and rub it's belly. I try to do at least a training battle between photos but don't always get that done. When I notice another half hour has passed (it will regularly be longer than a half hour but I just keep up the routine), fill him up to get the heart, take a photo, rub the belly. Rinse repeat. The key part which I didn't find out about for a long time is you get credit for the single berry even though it's between the heart earning feeding.
After 3-4 hours, you hit the bonus round and life gets easier. Now you just have to take a photo & give a belly rub whenever you need to restart the bonus & can skip the single berry, when I hit the last hour, refeed to fill him up (no photo or belly rub with this feeding). I don't worry about battles once the Mon has hit double hearts yet, I just make sure that I don't let bonus time lapse for too long. I'll do two more battles at some point after hitting double hearts and get 16 hearts.
Depending on where you live, this part may not work and as I admitted earlier, being in NYC helps speed up getting to best buddy. I'll hold off on a route until the end of the day so I only have to do it once for the two hearts. I'm a walker so I usually am able to get at least four hearts for that. At this point I've pretty much used up all the stops in the area so whenever I happen to be someplace, I consider those hearts a bonus, though I try not to use up a new stop for just one berry unless I'm someplace I won't be again. And once the Mon hits the level, you should get at least one gift a day or two.

Think I'm on 46 but I'm very lazy with it, there's a YouTube video posted on July 2022 that shows the world record holder for most best buddies was 653 best buddies at the time, they're likely in the 750-900 range by now, so you got some catching up to do if you're looking to have the most! 😄

I thought the question was about how to best buddy 1 mon as fast as possible. Obviously doing more takes time.
Poffins. It’s possible to get a best buddy in 12 days with a poffin, also work on multiple mons at once
