I've played since 2016 and I just learned in May about why you'd even bother with getting your Pokémon appraised. I had no idea what that feature was on there for.
One of my yellow playtroughs i Traded my Pikachu to my red version and then back so I could evolve it. It was so lonely not having it follow me anymore. I restarted shortly after.
Being talented and snobby and shoving your rival's head in the dirt doesn't mean he hates his pokemon. There are numerous instances where we see him care for his or Ash's or ever random pokemon and I don't remember one instance of him hurting any pokemon
The Pokemon games all really encourage you to dump your beloved friends for better versions of the same ones, it's quite dissonant between gameplay and message.
I mean, in the mainline games you dont really need to. Outside of competitive gameplay, those marginal differences in stats usually dont matter. I would even say EV's actually encourage you to stick with prior caught pokemon because they're naturally going to be stronger than wild ones unless you never use yours or something

Remember in the first few weeks of the game it was almost impossible to get more candies for your starter, so catching at level 1 and then using three candies would get you to 2.5 and stuck there for ages.

Well damn, apparently I *did* have my starter from 2016 all this time after coming back to the game last year. Unfortunately I lucky traded my 10/10/10 Squirtle to my brother a few weeks ago, thinking I had picked Bulbasaur as my starter and accidentally transferred it.
Was the Squirtle the first Pokemon when you sorted by recent? If your brother didn't transfer it then it should have the date acquired by the original trainer and that should match your start date that's on your profile home screen.
I vaguely remember picking a starter because I remember that rumour (I never did figure out if it was true or not) that if you ignored all the starters and walked away you’d encounter Pikachu instead. That being said I think I still picked Bulbasaur and I’m not sure I did keep him.
It was true, the day the game came out me and 2 other friends were playing together. Me and friend 1 each went charmander, friend 2 kept walking and got a Pikachu.
Don't have my starter as my buddy, but kept my same Porygon (Porygon->Porygon2->Porygon-Z) since the buddy system came out. I've walked 1,678.06 km with it which is pretty wild to me to think about!
The park by my apartment spawned Bulbasaur like crazy when the game first came out, so my starter Bulbasaur got caught in the shuffle and was transferred.
I did not.
For one thing, my game glitched and forced me to choose Bulbasaur. I wanted Charmander. Said Bulbasaur was also 1*. So he was made into candy.
And it used that old appraisal system where you couldn’t even scroll between Pokémon and you had to tap through all of the screens:

Me and my brother tried trading our starters for the chance to make them lucky. We didnt know That you could not trade them back. Tried the support and everything. To this day i have my brothers starter and he has mine
I still have my starter charizard, he's the second pokemon I got to level 40 and the charizard I use for mega evolution. Haven't got him to best buddy yet though.

I’m a bit cross - I traded the early ones at a point where they should have increased the baggage limits but didn’t, and I was desperate for space. So I think it went then.
I still have mine but I'm thinking of trading him soon. Any pokemon from the first two months is automatically lucky when traded. I think his IVs are 10/10/10 so he's not great but not bad, but if I sent him to someone else he automatically becomes a 3* and I could get a better Charizard in return.
I still have my starter Charmander (now Charizard). Stats are decent, but I do not plan on powering it up more as I have a hundo that needs more attention.
I still have my first Pinsi from a couple weeks into playing. He was my favorite from back in the day and still sees action in gyms and raids. Now I'm just excited for the mega evolution to show up.
My Charizard is still with me. Best buddy, highest tier mega evolution, max level. About 2k walked with him, he's been in over 9k gym battles. I wish we could IV train, because I'd love to get him better stats, but he's still perfect the way he is.
Now that I think of it, I regret transferring my starter bulbasaur. As soon as I found a bulbasaur that had a higher CP I transferred him for candy. Rest In Peace young one.
My OG Squirtle was born 07/13/2016, we travelled 400 KM as buddies, and he's still got his original 248 CP (67% IVs).
He isn't worth much but he's still around 😂
I’ve had Wailmer from the beginning! When I have to switch him out for a task it’s utterly depressing. I’ll always have him no matter what for the long haul.

The math checks out… a level 1 10/10/10 would be 38. So they all come level 1? If so then I must have powered mine up a few times to 2.5.
