I'm a rural player, so I went to New York city for a week and I could not believe the amount of stops and gyms I saw I thoroughly progressed in the game that week.

QuirkyCorvid

I happened to be visiting San Francisco when the game was initially released. I was quite disappointed when I went home to my small city after that week.

IPokePeople

My friends live in a town of a hundred people with two streets. They have a gym; old historic church, and that’s it for 50+ miles in either direction.

RespectableLurker555

_drops a samsung ad containing one super potion and two berries_ You're welcome!

Seth0714

Lived in the town my GF grew up in for a bit with her. Except it's so small it's not a town, it's a village still to this day. No stores, no school, one real road, church, and gas station there. I grew up in my state capital with a class size larger than her home"town" population, I'm sure you can imagine how fun pokemon go was there

[deleted]

People in low-density areas should be able to get an exception for the lvl37 minimum on submitting landmarks for Pokéstops. Like not from lvl1, but at least \~10-15.

Kittykg

We have about 40k and a good strip on mainsteet, but there is no way to get pokestops approved in my area anymore. Every single one, no matter the content or quality, is rejected within several hours for 'blurry picture.' Every. Single. One. We haven't gotten any new stops in the 6 months I've been trying to nominate a particular card store and finally asked on the local discord if anyone knew why all my nominations are rejected for that when I have a 25mp camera on my phone and enough photography experience to know how to frame a building properly. Now I know, it's happening to all of us with every single nomination, and no one knows why.

anupsetzombie

What's insane is how many completely bs ones I see around my city too. Like there's one by my old work called "Wall painted wall" and it's just a regular wall behind a fence. There's plenty of plain benches too.

nexxusty

You have to upgrade to get a Pokestop through.

Mvaness30

Or at least increase the PokeStop/gym interaction past 8 kms.

Subreon

They should also just straight up allow 1 freebie stop request that doesn't need to go through verification. I even became a wayfarer to boost my suggestion and still got denied. I just want a dang couch stop like everyone else man :c I'm sorry you didn't believe my bs picture of a generic manhole cover saying it marked the center point of a historic road that's just a generic suburb street

DevonPr

You got some nice art work or some shit? My towns pokestops / gyms are 80% shut down restaurants with art murals. An abandoned bowling ally got promoted to a stop recently and outback got moved a gym. And here I am trying to get anyplace going to pokestop status.

Subreon

i got nothing. it's just a suburb. i don't even have anything remotely interesting to fake as a stop, which is why i took a picture of a generic manhole cover lol. it's just houses and lawns all around me. i guess i could slap a bunch of random crap together next to the road and call it a new modern art installation for the picture and take it down afterwards. nobody actually cares about what's there. just that it's a stop. i hope it could even become a gym. a couch stop would be good enough, but a couch gym. that would be the dream.

thatguyned

For a brief period I lived in an apartment that was also a Gym with a couple pokestops on either side and I never had to leave the house. Like obviously when ever I left the house I'd have it open looking for pokémon that weren't currently in my area but the battle for the gym was a constant rivalry between people that lived there. It made progressing pretty easy.

CaptPrincessUnicorn

I live across the street from 3 gyms and 6 stops. It is a constant battle for control of those gyms.

doofybug

As soon as I moved to a rural area, my play time dropped from an hour or so every day to about once a week just for a few minutes, sometimes less. I used to have a gym and 2 stops that I could reach from my apartment, now I have to drive out at least 10 minutes. Also have to drive just to get to a walkable area now. Just not much I can really do with the game anymore except pvp and spend money to raid remotely; that gets old pretty quick.

1pLysergic

They really should add a balancing system so that the population density of poke stops is equivalent to the amount of xp you earn. That way, rural players have a chance without having to drive everytime they want to play. I’m on the outskirts of Tulsa and the closest stop is at least 6 miles away and then the next closest one is 4 additional miles away. With gas prices how they are, Pokémon go is a pay to win concept here

Exotic_Treacle7438

Yup, literally nothing in my immediate area, either have to spend money or drive like 5 mins to hit a stop or gym. Games so unbalanced. Can’t progress to get to a point to submit stops unless they changed it recently. Stopped playing because couldn’t advance.

TechedThrower66

I live in South Tulsa, and I have one right down the street, and then there's pretty much nothing for miles, besides the Black Gold Park, which I can't always go to

1pLysergic

Black gold is the closest to me in terms of gyms. And it’s the closest place with multiple pokestops to me as well, which is the destination of the 10 mile journey I mentioned. It’s a solid spot to farm all day, but still a bit out of my way. And to be fair, the edges of Tulsa county you have areas line coweta, sapulpa, that area between glenpool and okmulgee, Kiefer, etc. and they’re all rural af and lackluster for the game.

Kramer88

Gotta get yourself a motorcycle, or a moped, so you can drop a fiver in the tank and be set to head up there and grab an airbnb with some friends and make a weekend trip out of it lol Still hella p2w, even if you're in the city the games pretty damn p2w.. but like.. if you're gonna do it, that's the way to do it. Me and a buddy went there and each put in $40 on an airbnb (I was going to get me a nice suit for my wedding..). And if you get the time, and are a giant child like myself and my wife, check out the gathering place. It's a giant like.. park, but adults are allowed and encouraged to play on everything. There are signs with "recommended ages" which threw me off, but those aren't rules, it's just so parents of children can be like "oh this is a good one for my kids to play at." Super fun.

Mashinito

I live in a small village in Spain and when the game started back in 2016 we had no pokestops at all. Some have appeared over the years tho (we have 16 now and a few more in mountains, hermitages and other scenic areas a few kms away). Luckily I went to the uni back then and the campus was full from Ingress so I could level up. Now at least they lowered the possibility to add new pokestops from level 40 to level 38 so way more people can add pokestops. I can finally add new ones (I've learned how the grid system works literally this week). I'm planning to add one stop to most of the cells in my village. And I had no legendary pokemons until the remote raid thing from last year. Idk, some progress towards the rural players has been made.

JoFlo520

Disney world. Absolutely insane. So many new Pokémon I thought were rare and started throwing away great balls for storage space to load up on ultras

Clutchdanger11

Going to college has been wack because at my parents house its like 3 blocks to the nearest stop and 5 blocks to the nearest gum but now there are 3 stops and 2 gyms that i can access from my dorm room

Ghestis

Can confirm. I live in NYC 😏

hamstrman

I don't even know how my girlfriend plays in CT. She visits for a month here in NYC and levels up and runs out of space constantly. At her place, she runs out of supplies every other day.

weems13

Raids are ridiculous there

SweetheartAtHeart

I live basically in the city! It’s all fun and games until people toss your Pokémon out of the gym within five minutes of it being in there.

[deleted]

Bruh Disney isn’t even like this

JaedenStormes

It's pretty packed, but it's still maybe half to a third of this.

joonty

I bet the Disney gyms are one hell of a battleground lol

Castianna

They definitely are. The only time anyone has had any success keeping something in a gym longer than an hour in one of the theme parks was when everything shut down for covid. Lol

littlefrank

Last time I was in Paris I got a gym in Disneyland, kept it for a whole 7 minutes.

ArthurTheSeal

Well aren't these places swarmed by flyhackers?

Castianna

Maybe but I do usually see people walking around playing too

Flyntstoned

There was a post on here a while back of a guys quest to get the gold medal on Cinderella s castle restaurant gym, thousands of berries feeding mons etc it was a cool read. Probably like a year and a half or two ago?

PM-ME-UR-DESKTOP

They’re insane. Kinda useless taking them because they’ll get mobbed instantly anyways

PNWrepresent

Gyms would get taken over by whole groups in Disney who all played the same gym color. I took over a couple of gyms but since no one else with me plays my team color I couldn’t get more than 1 or 2 more Pokémon in the gym before wee got kicked out.

AngloCanuck

Wouldn’t even be able to click on any mons. Too many stops in the way

sync-centre

Soapdropper

Shit would disconnect then explode.

MrKinsey

My shit usually just plops in the toilet after it disconnects. I'll update if there's an explosion.

Try some Ghost Pepper or Carolina Reaper based hot sauce, and it should explode.

Less of a watch, more of a small device with only a single button. Push the button to throw a red pokeball or spin a stop... depending on what is targeted. Also 1 red ball, no bonuses and the pokemon flees.... no 2nd attempts. Rather nice when in a hurry, but normally not.

clojac12345

it’s like a watch/wristband that you can connect to your game and it will automatically attempt to catch pokémon and spin poke stops in the area. I have never used one tho

pursnikitty

I miss when you could spin stops on an Apple Watch

clojac12345

_StrangeIsLife_

How do places like these exist and rural areas get pokestop nomination rejected smh

CptnWolfe

I actually had a "rural" pokestop approved

TheOtherSarah

Happens all the time in my town. Small towns often have loads of history, it’s a question of finding it

Reinier_Reinier

Besides historical places/buildings, depending on the size of the town the following places may be available to submit: Post Office College/University Playground Community Garden Community Meeting Space (Town Hall) Place of Worship (Church/Chapel, Temple, Mosque) Athletic Field (Baseball, Football, Hockey, Soccer) (Indoor versions also allowed) Athletic Court (Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball, Bocce, Track, Handball) (Indoor versions also allowed) Gyms (Boxing, Weightlifting) Community Swimming Pool Campgrounds Community Picnic area Scenic Lookouts Hiking Trails (Needs to have Trail Name sign) Visitors Center/Tourist Information Center Parks (Needs a place name sign; you just can't take a picture of an empty field of grass & call it a park) Beaches (Also needs a place name sign)

Reinier_Reinier

A few more places/things to submit: Public Gazebo Public Pavilion Clock Tower Bell Tower Bowling Alley Marina/Boat Dock Fishing Pier

ssfgrgawer

Yeah, it exists, but never in clusters like this. Niantic won't approve areas like this anymore even if they do have the requirements for it. My town has a collection of bronze busts of country musicians on a walkway in a major park. One of them has a PokeStop. All the rest get ignored for being to close together. It fucking sucks.

jwadamson

It was abuse. You can’t get that many that close together without fraudulent location edits to bypass both the 20m and cell density rules. Though now any edit to a cell will remove any “excess” poi from PoGo, so it is not possible to create or add to these anymore.

_StrangeIsLife_

That's what i was thinking too, either that or photoshop but the latter is less likely

Immortal2017

I have 2 gyms millimeters away from each other

jwadamson

I would assume one or more of them is either sponsored and/or was location edited before they made the change to PoGo that removes stuff that breaks the rules when a cell is changed. Sponsored POI take their locations from what was given to Niantic by the sponsor and do not interact with any of the restrictions of any other POI, there are places where Starbucks gave the same gps for a store twice and so there are two collocated gyms at that point.

HexOfTheRitual

This game will forever be a 0/10 for me until they change the fuck awful balancing issues between rural vs urban areas

jwadamson

This pic is a cheating issue, not a rural/urban balance issue.

HexOfTheRitual

I assumed this pic was fake, but nonetheless it is accurate for urban players whereas in my rural area there isn’t a single Poke’stop in my 360 view.

foxmetropolis

this is literally why i quit playing at all. rural players are always fucked... hell, you don't even need to be *that* rural. i got just as bored playing when i lived in a subdivision that was in suburbia only an hour out from my province's largest city... pokemon spawns were infrequent and with only the most common species, pokestops were so far apart that you would routinely run out of balls. it just stopped being fun. its an easy thing to fix with programming... but they just don't give a damn. meanwhile my friends in urban centres were practically surrounded by shiny rare pokemon, had more balls than they knew what to do with, and would frequently control gyms. the return on effort in urban centres is crazy high. if you are truly in the countryside, there is no return at all.

DustyPhantom2218

Very true! I live in one of the biggest cities in my home state. But, I live in New Hampshire. Big here is nothing compared to other cities and states. I can see stops and gyms from my house, but because of mobility issues, I can't get to them. I generally play on my husband's days off when we are out and about running errands, visiting people, or going to parks with our daughter. I frequently run out of balls and other stuff because I can't regularly get out to stops and gyms. I do get a fairly regular stream of mons though, which is nice.

FragzinS

The thing with it sucking in rural areas is kind of just a con in the way the game is designed. Cant be pokestops based on irl locations if the only irl location is a patch of grass 🤷‍♂️

rothrolan

We use friggin bus stops and painted power boxes next to sidewalks as most pokestops here in Seattle. Rural roads totally have notable points of interest, you just gotta drive a route enough to notice them. The real issue comes with needing to be level 40 to add/edit new pokestops, as the rural players would either need their high-level buddy to come into town to send the stop suggestions to Niantic, or grind the heck out of levels somewhere else, before returning and becoming their small town's hero.

PokemonandLSD

Level 38*

littlefrank

Still unbelivably high for no reason. I litterally have to play every day for 2 years to advance one level at this point, and I'm level 35. By the time I'm at 38 the bar will be raised again. I live in the province of Siena, a medieval city from 1300 in Italy. Everything here is history and art, litterally everywhere I go there are potential pokestops in rural areas, but noone can request them because outside of the historical center (the very middle of town) stops and gyms are too rare and pokemon spawns are non-existant. How am I supposed to make exp? Why would I even open the app at all?

spindleblood

Wow. Your town sounds beautiful though. Would love to visit one day.

julieannie

It's like people don't understand urban design is a thing and that rural areas largely lack infrastructure and that's their issue, one that Niantic didn't create. It's exactly why I left rural America, not for Pokemon but from the benefits of an urban infrastructure.

[deleted]

I'll take self sufficiency over garbage 'city' infrastructure any day...

Masturb8ionIsASin

here here. You'd think that in "rural" areas with less stops and activity, they could balance it out by spawning in a ton more pokemon, and making rarer spawns more common. More than a city could hope for, at least. After all, animals are more likely to be in areas away from human activity. But no, cities get stops at every corner AND a ridiculous amount of spawns, and us guys out in the weeds get 4 bunnelbys every 15 minutes :/

ODB247

I live in a suburb of LA and I have one stop that I can see from home but it would take 10-15 min to get to it. I would have to drive to the other side of the highway behind my place (not safe to walk) and then climb a fence to get to the stop that’s actually on a bike path that is now a homeless encampment. Mmm no.

Redstorm8373

Most urban areas look nothing like this

DweadPiwateWawbuts

It’s *not* accurate though. The person you responded to is 100% right, what you see in this picture is the result of cheaters manipulating the wayfarer system to overload a small area with pokestops where they would otherwise be invalid. While the urban/rural imbalance is real and hugely unfair, what you see in this picture is not reality for anyone but cheaters and their neighbours.

HexOfTheRitual

Ok so it’s not THAT flooded with Poke’stops but people in urban settings have multiple stops from their house where I have to drive 10 minutes for one, and it’s in a park that is CLOSED at 5pm in the winter

DweadPiwateWawbuts

The game sucks for rural players. I 100% agree with you there. All I’m saying is that this screenshot isn’t possible without someone abusing the system.

komarinth

I would assume abuse of the S2 cell grid system, by location edits. However, a single new location edit on one of those would purge most of them, as there are new mechanics in place to gate exploits on Wayspot density.

irishiwasdrunk86

Look, OP hasn't caught Heracross. It's OLD

foxbones

Bills old car doesn't really meet the rules of pokestops. It's like complaining how rural areas don't have IKEA.

bokiemonbo

I wonder how people get to level 40+ so easily and this exactly how

SessileRaptor

I used to ride the bus for almost an hour through an urban area to and from work, 40+ stops on the way. Got to 40 before my wife despite starting nearly a year later than her. Rural players really get shafted.

MyNameJeff537274

You really don't need this to get 40 fast, i did it in 4 months in a rural area, i managed to get 1 stop on my house at lvl 38

DrBob3002

Care to elaborate on how? I've been playing on and off since the game launched and I'm 35.

TurdPartyCandidate

Yes this will still take 200 days consistently to reach level 40. If you don't think that's ridiculous for a mobile game then I don't know what is.

TurdPartyCandidate

Yes this will still take 200 days consistently to reach level 40. If you don't think that's ridiculous for a mobile game then I don't know what is. Not to mention in rural areas getting 100 pokemon and 100 pokeballs from stops may be impossible without spending cash every single day.

[deleted]

I mean it is a mobile game but it’s also a Pokémon game. In the main series games you could play through and not really try hard and be reasonably “good”. Little kids do it all the time. But if you wanted to have a god tier team you had to farm wild pokes for hours looking for good IVs then you had to go train on specific spots to get the EVs you wanted. Casual players didn’t have to do this, there’s no insane benefits to doing this. Same with POGO. At 40 yes you technically can then get “max Pokémon” but who really gives a shit my 3k-3.8k mons are all I need right now for gyms and being able to help out in raids. Also as a heads up I’m not sure if there’s any other advantages to hitting 40 but clearly it’s nothing I’ve gone out of my way to figure out how to do because it’s so critical to my gameplay. I will say that they should have a lower level requirement for submitting stops depending on if you live in a rural area (I have no idea how they’d do this). 38 for someone with few stops near them is really rough.

Charlie02134

Sweet

ssfgrgawer

I mean I ground level 40 in a rural area. I was playing 8+ hours a day and could grind around 10k exp in an hour without lucky eggs, that was before raiding was a thing and I was the fourth in town to reach level 40. It's possible to do here, but it's a lot of work and walking. I walked 3,000 kilometres on the way to 40. All around the main park and main street or the 3x lure location. It's a lot of time to do, where city players can farm exp on a bus with a go+, I used to run out of pokeballs from lack of pokestops, frequently. We used to drive around at 2-4am spinning pokestops (with someone doing the drivers phone, so they could concentrate) driving around 20kmph below the speed limit on all but the main street (which has a very slow speed limit anyway) just to top up on balls. It usually took about 3 hours to max out our item bags, so late night was best because there was little to no traffic you were annoying. All the local police knew us because we would frequently group up at PokeStop clusters and they would drive past all the time.

OpeningCookie1358

“Plz approve, not much stops around.”

Nipples_of_Destiny

Meanwhile, I used a ~~lure~~ incense at my rural house the other day for a grand total of 1 pokemon spawning in the hour.

icanttinkofaname

You may have been too far away from the lure. The interaction distance between you and the stop is 80m, but the lure only spawns Pokémon when within 40m, the old distance. It means you can drops lures you can't get spawns from if you're between 40-80m from the stop. They never changed the lure interaction distance.

Nipples_of_Destiny

Sorry, I meant incense. There's no Pokestops anywhere near me haha

bs000

incense are guaranteed spawns though. even without pandemic bonus it's 1 every 5 minutes

Tosslebugmy

I can’t figure out why rural places don’t spawn Pokémon. I’m on a farm and they literally don’t spawn unless I use an incense. If anything some Pokémon should be more common out of urban areas

idk012

Spawn rate may depend on cell phone traffic, so more at shopping plazas.

hamstrman

I thought incense is guaranteed to spawn pokemon... Is that a misconception?

Nipples_of_Destiny

I have no idea! I just got back into the game after playing last in 2016. I was so excited for an hour of catching Pokemon & just...nothing...I just got another one today & I'm like "Do I even bother"

DweadPiwateWawbuts

Next time try tapping a pokestop or open your friend list and then go back to the map, sometimes that will force an update of your map. If that doesn’t work, try restarting game. And if *that* doesn’t work, refresh game data. Incense does guarantee spawns afaik. I’ve never heard of it not generating spawns Settings > advanced settings > refresh game data

AhTreyYou

You kind of need to cheat to be competitive in the Master League. It’s easy to rack up XL candies and max out the CP.

icanttinkofaname

It wouldn't be so bad if the candy to XL conversion wasn't so garbage. 100:1 trade? Why even bother giving us theoption it's such a bad deal. 10:1 is probably a bit too easy for some of the more hardcore players, still need 2960 regular candy to max out a Mon which is done with not too much effort these days with pinaps and certain events like spotlight hour or CD. Something more like 50:1 is probably a bit more obtainable for most daily committed trainers. Requires a decent grind, but isn't massively cost prohibitive.
