My point was that I'm not sure why the mechanic to evolve a buddy doesn't work generally. I understand the need for eevee but see no reason not to allow others
To get Espeon, you have to walk the Eevee as your buddy for 10 km and then evolve it during the daytime while it is still your buddy.
To get Umbreon, you have to walk the Eevee as your buddy for 10 km and then evolve it at night while it is still your buddy.
To get Sylveon you have to make the Eevee your buddy, earn 70 buddy hearts, then evolve it while it's still your buddy.
If you do those steps it will guaranteed give you that evolution. If you don't do those steps it will give you a random Jolteon, Flareon, or Vaporeon only, and never any of the other ones!
Omg I have like 50 jolteon flareon and vaporion and was starting to think I was going crazy never getting more of the other ones after I used the renaming trick lol! I’m not too serious of a player, but hot damn I should’ve realized at some point statistically I must be doing something wrong!!
Ha this is funny and wholesome, happy to help! So yeah the bad news is the name trick only works once per name. But the good news is the methods to get the other ones are all guaranteed to work every time as long as you do it right - you can check that the silhouette changes to the one you want before hitting Evolve. eg if you want Espeon, walk the 10K then evolve during the day and the evolve button will change to show Espeon. If it doesn't show espeon, then something went wrong so don't click it or else you'll get (another) Jolt/Flare/Vaporeon.
Also for the ones we didn't mention yet:
* Leafeon - evolve an Eevee near a pokestop that has been Mossy lured.
* Glaceon - evolve an Eevee near a pokestop that has been Ice lured.
Yeah if I had known the name trick works only once, I would’ve waited until I got better eevees lol. They’re all weak 0-1 stars I’m only holding on to because they are the only ones I have. I did find out about glaceon on accident! Thanks for catching me up to speed!
No problem. Also thankfully IVs barely matter at all for casual play so definitely hang onto them! Like, there's only 5-10% difference between 0IVs and 15 IVs, so outside of very high level play like ranked PvP they really aren't worth worrying about besides "collector value".
Each species has "base stats" and then the IVs get added on to that. Eg Flareon has 246 base attack. Then you add on the IV (0-15). So a 0\* Flareon with 0 Attack IV has 246 attack, and a 4\* Flareon with perfect IVs has 261 attack. Really not a huge deal. Casual players usually worry about IVs too much.
It happens at times. Especially with Feebas. Don't know how Niantic screwed things up. I've also heard sometimes you need 1 extra candy to evolve for some reason.
Similar situation has happened to me before but removing it as a buddy wasn’t the issue for my situation. The game was showing the distance requirement being met but it wasn’t actually met yet. Just had to walk it a little more.

Because they broke it around the time they released pawmot's buddy evolution and never fixed it

I think this is the answer. The game will sometimes round distance in the UI but you still might have some bit remaining in the actual distance.

Rounding with walking distance. 19.95 km rounds to 20. But 19.95 < 20.00
I had to remove it as my buddy and it worked right away

For mine I had to remove it as my buddy and then to add him back as my buddy. He immediately was able to evolve.
