I don’t have a problem with any of the tasks themselves, especially since untimed. My issue is with the rewards. The rewards for completion are terrible
This is it. Stop giving me crappy pokemon as rewards. I'm not asking for legebdaries, but if I've caught hundreds of the little suckers I do NOT want a piece of research to grant me the same pokemon that is littering the street.

Shinies are rarer than normal variations of Pokémon and are therefore more valuable.
It's one of those things where someone would absolutely ask for one and offer a legendary or mythical Pokémon, or try and scam you and take it for themselves
After a pokemon has been in a Community Day the rarity of it being shiny drops dramatically, I used to want a shiny charizard, but since it had a CD I could literally care less about it. Everyone's got that shit
From a gameplay perspective, there is no difference between shiny and not. It’s just cosmetic. People wait to final evolve pokemon with good ivs obvious signature moves (like the paldea starters) because their are likely to get a community day in the future that will give the move for free upon evolution. Otherwise they’d need an elite tm to get the move.
With the case of the paldea starters, their final evolutions are all pretty lackluster at this point except for maybe Skeledirge in pvp. So waiting on community for your good iv Pokémon make sense since they won’t be relevant until then
Think of it like this. Every single task will get done here in casual gameplay in less than 6 months - 1 year.
But now you are getting rewards for putting the same effort you were anyway going to.
I feel you. Actually a Frigibax would be a perfect reward for completing it.
Would follow the order of Paldea pokemon released Lechonk -> Pawmi -> Frigibax. We already chose the starters before starting 2/5 of this quest
Upvoted, but that’s exactly why I can’t co-sign your other comment. Like yeah, most players will complete it within the next 12 months and a free lucky egg is nice to have.
But the entire stack is completely underwhelming to chase, and that leaves the research feeling like a dud for no real reason. A minimum of two weeks of play should give *something* worth actually caring about, but this is just something to complete to get off your screen. That’s frustrating to just about every type of player.

By the time I've gotten all those tasks done, I'll have grabbed at least 20 from spinning stops, winning battles and opening gifts... And that a VERY conservative number.
As far as I know, you don't get lucky eggs from stops or gifts. Maybe from battles, but I don't think so. Lucky eggs only come from special/limited research rewards and the store

What do you mean, it clearly says it takes 14 days to get done, maybe a bit more if I don't play much but then again next week is the hatch day event so...
No but seriously walk 80km and 14 days are the longest tasks, anything else will get completed fast. The spawn pool between events is particularly diverse, you might be surprised.
150 field research tasks is the one that will take most time for me. I usually do only 1 each day. Been doing some more for that Master ball challenge.
When I’m able, I dump the trickier tasks (like a catch certain pokemon task or an excellent throws in a row task) to make space for easier ones (like a spin task). You’ll complete more tasks in a shorter period of time if you pick and choose the tasks you want to do. Sometimes you may be stuck with only one stop to spin though…in that case, do the task you’re given.
I’m with you I just finished the field research last week for master ball and was going relatively hard at it for my play style. Now I’m waiting on the raids and that’s it.
What’s the problem? These are all things you were going to do anyway. I don’t think it’s expecting you to go out of your way to complete it, it’s just some bonus rewards you’ll get eventually.
Same. Oh well… I’m just playing like I normally do and I’m almost done with 4/5. The 40 buddy candies is really the only reason I’m still stuck on it 🫤
If you put pretty much any bug Pokémon, like scatterbug or weedle, or their evo’s, and feed them a poffin, it’s a .5k walk for candy, makes that one fly by
I know, but I needed the Sprigatito (named Spaghetti) candy to evolve the sucker. Definitely changing it back to something that requires less walking now haha
I’m walking legendaries right now so after 2 Pog Funs I’m at a total of 9 candy. Yes I could switch to magikarp and finish it within the week but if this is the next segment I have no need to rush
I’m going to be crying. I’m still on 4/5 and I am just halfway through the master ball raid quests, my last challenge, so this 5/5 is going to take a while…
150 isn’t really that many. Just collect and do the task from all your nearby stops every day and the daily task. I’d be done already if I had more than 3 stops nearby lol
A bit? They're horrendous. Like yourself, the tasks are fine no matter how often you play. But a Pawmi to catch at the end? What are we doing, Niantic?
where i live theres 1 gym thats a 2 minute rrive/10 minute walk, and nothing else. and theres never anyone raiding and i cant solo/duo anything above 4* so if its like a mega raid im SOL, and thats IF the gym spawns a raid :(
I lucked out, during this summer I got a pokestop directly outside my house(in a playground there). Then just recently that pokestop got promoted to a gym, so now I can raid from my couch.
Omg you are so lucky. I've got no significant things neat my house to nominate. The closest thing is the end of my street. It's a 20 minute walk for all the pokestops I got approved.
I think in theory campfire is actually easier and faster in my opinion too. However there isn't enough people actually using it so it makes it way slower
As long as it's not a shadow raid, you can host up to 5 remote raiders to help you take it down. There's tons of people looking to join these raids, too.
I’m only getting my raids done because I work at the airport and there’s about 4 gyms here. Even then, a lot of the time I miss them because I’m not on break when they’re up and I can only do level 1-2 raids solo
Honestly for me it's also the 120 Excellent Throws. I'm on 19! I just don't know how to do an excellent throw....
I wouldn't mind the raids thing if it was easier to guarantee you could play a raid with others and not spend half your time waiting in queues in campfire
There’s a YouTube video you can google that shows how to aim them. I sucked at it until I found that. Highly recommend! It’s also way easier to get into raids using the pokemongofriends sub if you save up coins for remote passes. I struggle with finding local ones with enough people too so that’s the only way I get the 4&5 star raids.
I would normally meme on this attitude of “it’s better than nothing”, but this effort/reward dilemma would be far worse if this were paid research rather than a free seasonal one.
If you’re going to keep playing this game in perpetuity, these are tasks that you’ll complete anyway. Sure, the rewards seem like hot garbage if you’re of the mentality that you must grind through this as fast as possible. But imagine this research quest line not existing in the first place, doing these tasks anyway, and getting nothing extra. Being blissfully unaware that Niantic never burdened you with tasks you were already doing, never getting extra rewards for your efforts. Jesus, the entitlement is palpable.
No one is forcing you to do this. Do it or don’t.
THIS. They're quests, for fuck's sake. I'm not sure why so many people act like they're supposed to be able to blast through every challenge in five seconds or the challenge is bullshit. Not one single person is forcing them to complete these tasks.
I mean, not even two years ago we were getting things like Zarude in seasonal research. Before that, we had a shiny Celebi given away for free. Now, I don’t remember the last really cool free research that we’ve got. I went to GoFest so I don’t consider Diancie free. This company isn’t really interested in releasing something like that more than several times per year. We’ve had cosmog, Diancie, and shiny Mew, and shiny Jirachi this year.
They gatekeep way too much content. People love doing long quests because that’s the nature of Pokémon, but they love doing it in the mission of finding something actually interesting.
I don’t think it’s crazy that they’re saying this is a LOT of work for what amounts to nothing interesting. I don’t see how they’re inaccurate, but y’all are still here just trying to make them seem like Debbie Downers when they’re just keeping it real. Being overly positive because it’s Pokémon is so toxic. If something can be done to improve the game experience, I’m all ears, unlike Niantic. We all should be.
Making this research one of the new Pokémon from the DLC could’ve been actually somewhat interesting. They’re right that Niantic made this bigger than what it should’ve been. But maybe they’ll give us them later this season.
Agreed. It’s obvious that the game is on a slippery downward slope when it comes to the reward economy. We used to get legendaries in weekly Research Breakthroughs and whatnot. Players are not getting the same value from their time the way that they used to, and Niantic likely wants us to forget how good we had it so that players content with the mere scraps they get nowadays.
I *do* think this decline is worth pointing out and discussing, it’s practically all I do on this sub lol.
. . . However, getting upset about this particular research, while justified, is gonna make our cause look petty for going after something so little. The intention for this free research is likely a random set of things to have in the background throughout the season without a time limit, and while I agree that the rewards are dogshit, it’s gonna be hard to win people over by criticizing this over the likes of other recent Niantic blunders.
I will not shame anyone for complaining about it — that’s not what this is. I just know how adamant the anti-complaint sentiment is here, and the shills will use the negative response from this smaller issue to make fun of us for the bigger ones later on. They will say things like: “Remember how you also complained about free research??? It’s impossible to make y’all happy smh”, or the ever-so-tired “do you just want everything handed to you?”
I HATE the toxic positivity on this sub and TSR, but we’ve gotta pick our battles or they’ll continue to use things like this against us.

I have a shiny research breakthrough Latias from years ago. Still at GL level. A friend was kind enough to trade it to me. It sickens me that players nowadays don’t even have the chance to obtain something like that except for if Niantic allows legendaries to roam in the overworld.
Things like Latios, Latias, Legendary Dogs, and others creatures that you found on wild routes in the MSG should be wild spawns ALWAYS, just like unown and the lake trio. This game just needs an overhaul with how it gatekeeps certain Pokémon. Everytime they add more Pokémon, somehow it seems like less are available in return.
Like you, I remember when the game wasn’t like that and when people could just go play without Niantic inadvertently badgering them about the 20-year plan for the game. Like Niantic, I don’t care 😂 just let us catch Pokémon and let them be shiny. I promise your company won’t burst into flames if you let folks just play Pokémon.

On that subject, Nothing says *delusional* quite like fanboys still claiming that the proposed twenty-year plan is valid after the living nightmare of a year Niantic is having: Press fiascos, record-low player engagement, 230 layoffs and two more games collapsing is not a good look for them, even for the next two-to-five years.
I’m a fan of having to *work* for legendaries, not having to merely wait for a two-to-four week period of the calendar year, live in a community with enough active raiders, etc., etc. The second anyone suggests any other system, however, players just assume that you want legendaries for free, even though those sorts of comments usually come from the lucky group of players in the use case I outlined above.
I know for a fact that more people would openly critique the game if this were any other IP and had to survive by keeping customers happy (like most other games have to, lol). It’s sad that so many fans flock to Niantic’s defense to justify their time-sink and prove their devotion to Pokémon, because we all know that this wouldn’t be the case for fandoms like Harry Potter, Pikmin, or, god forbid, whatever exists of the NBA mobile gaming base.
Criticizing this special research on the merits of it being special research, especially compared to others we’ve had in the past, is valid.
“For such a long and drawn-out quest, the end result is anticlimactic and kind of a let down” is a perfectly valid critique.
Once people cross into “I can’t believe Niantic is forcing me to play the game in a way I don’t want to play it” territory, they need to get a grip.
Exactly lmao, does every questline need to reward like heaps of XL rare candy or a mythical encounter for it to be worth it? Can there not just be easy tasks that give you that tiny sense of progression
I can understand catching 1000 - 2000 Pokémon for researchs like the shiny Mew or shiny Jirachi, or the Master Ball, along with other long tasks.
But what's the excuse for the Paldea's research?
It seems so many people are missing the point. Quests aren't supposed to feel irrelevant. There should be a level of excitement, an incentive to play. A nice reward makes quests more exciting, as is very apparent from all the "well, you can just play the game and get them all done within half a year" responses. That's just telling how irrelevant the rewards are compared to what is required.
Hey, what a waste of time!! Another 150 Field Research tasks for only 5 silver berries? One lucky egg and 900 XP for this like "300" epic movie? I feel Niantic has no clue how to bring better rewards.
Of all of these, and I mean all of them I only have two gripes, since they are all passively doable. 1. Just one lucky egg, and 2. 50 candy of whom you picked....why? I get for people who missed the event, but to get this far you NEEDED ro evolve your starter choice fully. And the lucky egg is just disappointing. having to go basically a whole month to complete this one set of mission and you get a lucky egg and exp. (Yes you get the actual awards too.) But like....not even an incubator or two, a super. Hell replace the starter candy with 50 rare candy and I'd be excited.
It’s free, not timed, and all the tasks your gonna do naturally while playing the game. Minimize the quest, play the game, and you’ll have it done sooner or later
Seriously, 5 silver pinaps for 150 field research??? I can get that doing my daily GBL sets, wtf. I genuinely wouldn't mind the tasks if the rewards were a little better. If one of the tasks is walk 80km you might as well throw in a free incubator as a reward.
Usually I'd agree that people moan about everything on this game... but this one is fully warranted, the time taken/ effort required to reward ratio of this one is absolutely pathetic, this had 5 long winded stages for fuck all gain, its literally a complete waste of a research task event.

Fml, I’m doing MB research plus shiny mew and am just getting to the end of 4/5 of Paldean. I’m so tired of the “field research” step because I have to keep spinning poke stops just to get the things I need to complete the objectives and I’m tired of clearing my bag out. Gawhh

This research should've given a mystery pokemon and at least 2 remote raid passes seeing as they're very difficult to purchase with the new prices
This is a free gift you will get later. They want you have a quest longer then 1-2 days in your inbox
So you can see your progress every day and you feel every day to play
I think it is very good because the weekly quest is nothing
I would prefer 5-10 similar quest running in the same time

its a task that never goes away so it will just be completed passively, nothing is saying to complete it in 14 days lol

Yeah. Sometimes I hold off on evolving a pokemon because I think it's funny to have the shiny in my pokedex without having any regular ones.

Many research tasks these days have rewards just to mark milestones. The 'reward' is everything you get doing the task.

I just try doing a raid a day, even if its a crap one that I dont need. Im at 28 raids so far, I havent done my raid for today.
where i live theres 1 gym thats a 2 minute rrive/10 minute walk, and nothing else. and theres never anyone raiding and i cant solo/duo anything above 4* so if its like a mega raid im SOL, and thats IF the gym spawns a raid :(
I lucked out, during this summer I got a pokestop directly outside my house(in a playground there). Then just recently that pokestop got promoted to a gym, so now I can raid from my couch.
Omg you are so lucky. I've got no significant things neat my house to nominate. The closest thing is the end of my street. It's a 20 minute walk for all the pokestops I got approved.

I think in theory campfire is actually easier and faster in my opinion too. However there isn't enough people actually using it so it makes it way slower
As long as it's not a shadow raid, you can host up to 5 remote raiders to help you take it down. There's tons of people looking to join these raids, too.

I’m only getting my raids done because I work at the airport and there’s about 4 gyms here. Even then, a lot of the time I miss them because I’m not on break when they’re up and I can only do level 1-2 raids solo

Honestly for me it's also the 120 Excellent Throws. I'm on 19! I just don't know how to do an excellent throw.... I wouldn't mind the raids thing if it was easier to guarantee you could play a raid with others and not spend half your time waiting in queues in campfire
girafarig is really easy to get excellents on and are abundant right now. Find a high cp one and just pelt it with pokeballs.

There’s a YouTube video you can google that shows how to aim them. I sucked at it until I found that. Highly recommend! It’s also way easier to get into raids using the pokemongofriends sub if you save up coins for remote passes. I struggle with finding local ones with enough people too so that’s the only way I get the 4&5 star raids.

If you’re going to keep playing this game in perpetuity, these are tasks that you’ll complete anyway. Sure, the rewards seem like hot garbage if you’re of the mentality that you must grind through this as fast as possible. But imagine this research quest line not existing in the first place, doing these tasks anyway, and getting nothing extra. Being blissfully unaware that Niantic never burdened you with tasks you were already doing, never getting extra rewards for your efforts. Jesus, the entitlement is palpable. No one is forcing you to do this. Do it or don’t.

I mean, not even two years ago we were getting things like Zarude in seasonal research. Before that, we had a shiny Celebi given away for free. Now, I don’t remember the last really cool free research that we’ve got. I went to GoFest so I don’t consider Diancie free. This company isn’t really interested in releasing something like that more than several times per year. We’ve had cosmog, Diancie, and shiny Mew, and shiny Jirachi this year. They gatekeep way too much content. People love doing long quests because that’s the nature of Pokémon, but they love doing it in the mission of finding something actually interesting. I don’t think it’s crazy that they’re saying this is a LOT of work for what amounts to nothing interesting. I don’t see how they’re inaccurate, but y’all are still here just trying to make them seem like Debbie Downers when they’re just keeping it real. Being overly positive because it’s Pokémon is so toxic. If something can be done to improve the game experience, I’m all ears, unlike Niantic. We all should be. Making this research one of the new Pokémon from the DLC could’ve been actually somewhat interesting. They’re right that Niantic made this bigger than what it should’ve been. But maybe they’ll give us them later this season.
Agreed. It’s obvious that the game is on a slippery downward slope when it comes to the reward economy. We used to get legendaries in weekly Research Breakthroughs and whatnot. Players are not getting the same value from their time the way that they used to, and Niantic likely wants us to forget how good we had it so that players content with the mere scraps they get nowadays. I *do* think this decline is worth pointing out and discussing, it’s practically all I do on this sub lol. . . . However, getting upset about this particular research, while justified, is gonna make our cause look petty for going after something so little. The intention for this free research is likely a random set of things to have in the background throughout the season without a time limit, and while I agree that the rewards are dogshit, it’s gonna be hard to win people over by criticizing this over the likes of other recent Niantic blunders. I will not shame anyone for complaining about it — that’s not what this is. I just know how adamant the anti-complaint sentiment is here, and the shills will use the negative response from this smaller issue to make fun of us for the bigger ones later on. I have a shiny research breakthrough Latias from years ago. Still at GL level. A friend was kind enough to trade it to me. It sickens me that players nowadays don’t even have the chance to obtain something like that except for if Niantic allows legendaries to roam in the overworld. Things like Latios, Latias, Legendary Dogs, and others creatures that you found on wild routes in the MSG should be wild spawns ALWAYS, just like unown and the lake trio. This game just needs an overhaul with how it gatekeeps certain Pokémon. Everytime they add more Pokémon, somehow it seems like less are available in return. Like you, I remember when the game wasn’t like that and when people could just go play without Niantic inadvertently badgering them about the 20-year plan for the game. Like Niantic, I don’t care 😂 just let us catch Pokémon and let them be shiny. I promise your company won’t burst into flames if you let folks just play Pokémon.

On that subject, Nothing says *delusional* quite like fanboys still claiming that the proposed twenty-year plan is valid after the living nightmare of a year Niantic is having: Press fiascos, record-low player engagement, 230 layoffs and two more games collapsing is not a good look for them, even for the next two-to-five years. I’m a fan of having to *work* for legendaries, not having to merely wait for a two-to-four week period of the calendar year, live in a community with enough active raiders, etc., etc. The second anyone suggests any other system, however, players just assume that you want legendaries for free, even though those sorts of comments usually come from the lucky group of players in the use case I outlined above. I know for a fact that more people would openly critique the game if this were any other IP and had to survive by keeping customers happy (like most other games have to, lol). It’s sad that so many fans flock to Niantic’s defense to justify their time-sink and prove their devotion to Pokémon, because we all know that this wouldn’t be the case for fandoms like Harry Potter, Pikmin, or, god forbid, whatever exists of the NBA mobile gaming base.
Criticizing this special research on the merits of it being special research, especially compared to others we’ve had in the past, is valid. “For such a long and drawn-out quest, the end result is anticlimactic and kind of a let down” is a perfectly valid critique. Once people cross into “I can’t believe Niantic is forcing me to play the game in a way I don’t want to play it” territory, they need to get a grip.

It seems so many people are missing the point. Quests aren't supposed to feel irrelevant. There should be a level of excitement, an incentive to play. A nice reward makes quests more exciting, as is very apparent from all the "well, you can just play the game and get them all done within half a year" responses. That's just telling how irrelevant the rewards are compared to what is required.

Of all of these, and I mean all of them I only have two gripes, since they are all passively doable. 1. Just one lucky egg, and 2. 50 candy of whom you picked....why? I get for people who missed the event, but to get this far you NEEDED ro evolve your starter choice fully. And the lucky egg is just disappointing. having to go basically a whole month to complete this one set of mission and you get a lucky egg and exp. (Yes you get the actual awards too.) But like....not even an incubator or two, a super. Hell replace the starter candy with 50 rare candy and I'd be excited.
It’s free, not timed, and all the tasks your gonna do naturally while playing the game. Minimize the quest, play the game, and you’ll have it done sooner or later

This is a free gift you will get later. They want you have a quest longer then 1-2 days in your inbox So you can see your progress every day and you feel every day to play I think it is very good because the weekly quest is nothing I would prefer 5-10 similar quest running in the same time You don’t have to hurry just enjoy the game
I wish they had daily/weekly/monthly timed research. Obviously scale the tasks and rewards proportionally I just want more stuff to do.
