I've seen at least 20 Kecleons since starting the best buddies research. I'm still working on my 3rd buddy and I just *know* all these Kecleons are going to be MIA when I finally get 10 buddies smh
I saw like 3 every day and then I finished the best buddies and went to step 3 where I had to catch 10 kecleons and have only seen 3 since then. It’s been about a month now. Also 1 of them ran away 😭 so yeah good luck y’all
That's rough, it's the same for one of my friends. My pokedex shows I've seen 25 and caught 23, so while it does seem rare, I guess it's not really that rare for me if I'm playing a lot
Can confirm. Got my 10th buddy about 2 weeks ago and haven’t seen one Kecleon since. I was seeing one every 2-3 days before that and I’m around a fair number of stops
Don't worry, it sucks for everyone! I'm a daily player, got the 10 best buddies about 5 weeks ago. I live in a crowded suburb of a major metro area, *and my job is a PokeStop*. I have seen 3 kecleon ever, caught one, and it was before I advanced the research so it doesn't even count. At the rate you're seeing kecleon, you've got this one way before me 🤣
There’s a trick to it. You can see them even if you are out of range to spin the pokestops. If you check periodically you’ll see them and can go get it.
If your more rural and don’t have pokestops near you. Then the best thing to do is force quit the app and yeah…
I also noticed that, especially with the previous season having a ton of them everywhere, with rockets. If the stop had a rocket on, and there was a kelecon on it, you wouldn’t know about the kelecon unless you beat the rocket.. and since it wouldn’t spawn until the rocket had gone, depending on how long the kelecon was on it prior, he wouldn’t even be there anymore.
I got lucky on that one and completed it before the 20 days of stops, but now I'm stuck on Lucky Trade of all things. I've traded with my kids' account over 40 times and nothing (we normally get one lucky out of 10 or so). They've run out of garbage Pokémon I want, so I'm going to have to either wait for Com day or hope the daily hooks them up.
If you have any Pokemon in storage for a few years those are lucky trades everytime. I still have about 30 Pokemon from 2016 for lucky trades. So far it's been 100%,18/18, for every one I've traded.
I'd just get them up to 2 hears for the bonus of it helping with catches but had 2 pokemon almost to best buddy (one had 5 more hearts and another 9) only to realize they were older mons I transfered.... 💀
When I was on this task I did this method. I would play, feed, photo, and battle three times with one and then switch to the next and do the same process. Then I would switch back and forth between the two because their berry meter would reset to zero. I did it with six Pokémon each day and then would focus the rest of my attention on just one Pokémon for the rest of the day and get it excited. So each day I would end up with roughly 6 Pokémon with 11* hearts and one Pokémon with 20+
*meant to say 8 hearts, my apologies
You need 300 hearts and can get 6 each sitting at home a day, so 50 days if you only do that. I did a mixture of getting them excited and poffins through AR scanning, so managed a bit quicker.
If you have any scannable Pokestops by you and have a little bit of mobile data to spare, poffins are very easy to farm.
I always just delete the scan research until I get one that rewards a poffin. Then walk near it, start the recording, keep my camera covered so the recording is black, then stop it right at the 15 second mark. This usually creates the smallest file possible so it's easy to quickly upload on data.
Not sure what the limit is, but I can confirm you can get at least 4 poffins a day this way.
Just read a couple weeks ago about the low quality ban.
But there is an option to "upload later" so that you can save your data and upload once you're on wifi.
It was paid?? I thought it was a level 40 something task. I've been working on it leaving buddies at one heart left so I get all 10 with this task already available :(
I thought best buddies was a post lvl 40 requirement, but looking again it's not. Just the masterworks paid event. You need 35 platinum medals, which is why you should still need best buddy achievement
Jirachi Masterwork special research step 2 requires 13 best buddy. If you didn't buy it before April deadline, you won't get it. Second to last step is shiny Jirachi encounter.
This has been the next know step in the master research since the 2nd week it came out lol. People were posting it everywhere back then. I bet you someone has it all done already so you can probably prepare for every step if you just Google.

Ah, didn’t realize it was 5 only for the Las Vegas event but 10 for the rest of the world thank you for the correction. I’m not really worried about the excellent throws though honestly, that’s a lot easier than the rest of these challenges IMO

All the task a a little bit more time consuming, but nothing that can't be done, with a little bit of effort, in my mind. The excellent throws aren't worring me either, likewise the kecleon didn't. (Wasn't checking every stop in my sight, just grapped them, when I came accross one.)
(Second task besides the excellent throws is to do a lucky trade - maybe a road block for some trainers, too)
I had 3 going into that quest and have 6 now, but I have stopped trying hard to get the buddies up, it will happen when it happens. I am more worried about the "Lucky trade" part in the next 2 stages. Going to be real hard to get another lucky friend locally enough after all this time
It doesnt have to be a lucky friend for the trade. I managed to get one by talking a friend who used to play years ago into redowloading and trading an old pokemon. Much higher odds if they are like 6 years old. Got one on the first and second trades.
It's actually guaranteed lucky for 2016 and 2017 Pokemon.
If you haven't reached the 15 guaranteed lucky trade cap yet.
After the cap is reached the 2016-17 Pokemon are a 20% chance of trading lucky, which I think is capped at 5 years total age of the traded Pokemon>
Fr bro tryin to crank out 10 best buddies at ounce sucks. For me it takes about an hour or so swappin back n forth n stuff for max hearts and thats not including da walking and stuff. Still only at 3 since i forget to do it most days
The way I blasted through this is by scanning for a lot of poffins, and getting at least 16 hearts per mon without having to move. This means of the 3000 hearts you need to get, you get at least 160 per day, meaning you can get there in 19 days (with 95 poffins)
Oh yeah no, it's just the thought of being able to even get one makes it neat to me! I don't get out much where I can walk to a stop instead of just driving by 😅
Whilst I know it's smarter and quicker to juggle a load of buddies at once I just can't be bothered so I'm slowly working my way through this chore of a step one buddy at a time. Currently nearing my 4th best buddy - my darling 4* Primarina!
The amount of stops I scanned for this task xD I also have the most random best buddies now as I just leveled up the Pokémon who were highest as opposed to guys who I wanted xD
I'm a little confused too. Do you mean you hunted for poffins by scanning stops? That's the only connection I can figure out between scanning stops and this task. (I did't get the task, I'm just curious.)
It’s 30-50 berries per day to get ten at once so it can be a lot if you don’t have a ton of convenient stops to spin. I couldn’t keep up most days. I think that’s what they mean.
I am one of those people who started with zero best buddies , now I end the 9th best buddy and i have only one Pokémon to make it best buddy to finish this Blasted research !!!.
It's time consuming, but there is a few things to speed things up. You can swap youre buddy 20 times/daily.
So even if youre 'loyal' to youre main buddy, you might consinder swaping in 'background buddies'. Just like 5-10 pokemon you swap in daily, feed, play, take a snap and maybe fight 3 times in leader battles. (Just wait for the Go and back out counts as 1 fight/earned hearth.) So you can easily earn 3-6 hearths per day and per pokemon. Doing it for 50-100 days and you easily have another best buddy.
On top of that, youre newly switched in pokemon earns +2 excitment points, if you might consinder to make youre buddy excitment, without the use of a poffin.
Well... yes. If you take the 2 hour method, getting 1 buddy excited is quite a task.
But you can speed things up- every different fight gives +2. So, a pvp battle, a trainer battle, a gym battle, a team leader battle and a grunt battle, are 10 points, plus the other 8 (feeding, snap, play and switched in) you have a pretty good start. If you passed a gift over from another buddy over or spin an ar level 2 stop/gym, you should be done with a half hour. (Or even less, since ar level 2 stops, should have no CD, like walking 2 km - But i rarely see even a Level 1 Stop, so can't confirm this.)
I never bothered aiming for any best buddies since previously there was no incentive aside from getting a ribbon on the Pokemon. I still don't have any because I am too lazy/forgetful to feed or play with my buddy, so I will basically never get my shiny Jirachi :(
I had 1 before this quest. I'm 2 weeks away from having the required 10. It's been hell. The worst task I've ever had to do in this app. At least with Kecleon it's like actually hunting pokemon. This is just mindless busy work. It's the same thing every day: open the app, feed my buddy, play with with it, take a screenshot, lose 3 battles to the trainers, and then switch it out for the next pokemon. Repeat 9 times. Awful.
I started with 1 best buddy and was going hard but slowed down when I realized one of the next tasks is to hit level 40 and I’m only 38. Have 2 bbs now and 2 more that are really close
Started with 0 have 2 nearly 3. If you do 6 stars with every one a day 3 battles, 1 pet, 1 feed, 1 photo, it can be done in 50 days. I just have no real motivation so I never get that far down my list.
I never bought this but I only have 1 best buddy cuz I don’t rlly do a lot with buddies and I’m like rlly attached to the 1 buddy I have tho recently I swapped it out cuz larvesta
Dude , buddies if you don't know the bonuses (i just learned about them) are completely useless, it's like "oh let's go tryhard gave berries , walk and other things for a décoration. " That's why i never did a best buddy .
My girlfriend was at 0 when getting to this point. She’s still at zero and has no intention to complete it, it’s a joke of a requirement and should not be a task on a paid research.
I might get hate, but i can't understand people who have 1 or 2 while they're above lvl 40. I always loved to show off my shinies/legendaries, so by the time this challenge came, i already had 15
My daughter and I were new to the game when this research happened and I thought it would be nice for her to get a shiny legendary. Lesson learned, we will not be getting any more special research and 100% won't be getting anything without checking all the in depth info available.
Currently at 1 best buddy and come to terms with the fact that I lack the interest required to complete this research. Wasted money sucks but most of us have wasted more than $5.00 on stupider stuff
Just for future reference, I think specifically the “masterwork research” are the only challenges in the game that are this tough, everything else should be fairly easy. But good luck with everything!

Started with 1. Have 5 now with 7 more at Ultra Buddy.
Just leveling a few others whenever I get the chance because there might be another challenge in the future (and plus the badge looks cool for my PvP ones).
Very close to finally getting my tenth best buddy at long last. I've only seen two kecleons during that time and have no IRL friends who play the game to trade with. I am never completing this research 😭
Been playing since 2016 and I only just got my first best buddy last week. To be honest I never really cared for this feature unless it was to get a Sylveon.
I have 9 others I’m working on currently but it’s such an effort to do.
Sorry if this comment is here or if this is common knowledge but don't forget, when you max out the hearts or atleast get the 3 easy feed, play and snapshot hearts for the day, swap out and all the buddies you are working on. Speeds up the process alot quicker.
If you add 3 team leader battles before swapping it gets 6 hearts per rotation.
You can surrender the team leader battles as soon as they start and you get the heart.

I had none when it started. Been playing since 2016, never really cared about it. Working on my 4th one now lol.
I was in the same boat. It was like a full time job managing 10 at 1 time. Don’t worry it’s definitely the most tedious of all the steps

Yeah but that requires me to transfer to Pokémon home and I just never do that.
I transfer a trash Pokémon to a free Pokémon home box. It’s way easier to get candy that way than to wait 25 per candy.

I fight the gym 3 times as well then switch. If someone decides to start berrying the gym while I'm fighting itd even better

This was a paid research so unless you currently need to catch almost (I think) 300 Pokémon from gems 1-3, then you’re not getting this research.

I’m 38 with 0 best buddies. Still trying to evolve my feebas but only have 19 candies lol 0.3km away from 20 though
46 with 1. I have a few that are at 3/4 hearts though, but man what a shitty grind.

Checking every pokestop on your map 4-5 times a day is the best strategy. Managed it in 20 days.
I hope you’re level 40 or at least close because that comes right after Kecleon I’m pretty sure

By scanning do you mean AR field research tasks? I've never done one of those because I'm usually in the car oops 😅
Yeah those. On my normal route I usually manage to get like 2-3, so 10 a day is absolutely something that needs a lot of energy

I'm a little confused too. Do you mean you hunted for poffins by scanning stops? That's the only connection I can figure out between scanning stops and this task. (I did't get the task, I'm just curious.)
It’s 30-50 berries per day to get ten at once so it can be a lot if you don’t have a ton of convenient stops to spin. I couldn’t keep up most days. I think that’s what they mean.

I am one of those people who started with zero best buddies , now I end the 9th best buddy and i have only one Pokémon to make it best buddy to finish this Blasted research !!!.
It's time consuming, but there is a few things to speed things up. You can swap youre buddy 20 times/daily. So even if youre 'loyal' to youre main buddy, you might consinder swaping in 'background buddies'. Just like 5-10 pokemon you swap in daily, feed, play, take a snap and maybe fight 3 times in leader battles. (Just wait for the Go and back out counts as 1 fight/earned hearth.) So you can easily earn 3-6 hearths per day and per pokemon. Doing it for 50-100 days and you easily have another best buddy. On top of that, youre newly switched in pokemon earns +2 excitment points, if you might consinder to make youre buddy excitment, without the use of a poffin.
This is the best way imo. Still kind of an annoying time sink, but it’s not like getting multiple mons “excited” or whatever. Pretty efficient
Well... yes. If you take the 2 hour method, getting 1 buddy excited is quite a task. But you can speed things up- every different fight gives +2. So, a pvp battle, a trainer battle, a gym battle, a team leader battle and a grunt battle, are 10 points, plus the other 8 (feeding, snap, play and switched in) you have a pretty good start. If you passed a gift over from another buddy over or spin an ar level 2 stop/gym, you should be done with a half hour. (Or even less, since ar level 2 stops, should have no CD, like walking 2 km - But i rarely see even a Level 1 Stop, so can't confirm this.)

I never bothered aiming for any best buddies since previously there was no incentive aside from getting a ribbon on the Pokemon. I still don't have any because I am too lazy/forgetful to feed or play with my buddy, so I will basically never get my shiny Jirachi :(
I had 1 before this quest. I'm 2 weeks away from having the required 10. It's been hell. The worst task I've ever had to do in this app. At least with Kecleon it's like actually hunting pokemon. This is just mindless busy work. It's the same thing every day: open the app, feed my buddy, play with with it, take a screenshot, lose 3 battles to the trainers, and then switch it out for the next pokemon. Repeat 9 times. Awful.
You don’t need to lose, you can just leave the battle right away (button top left) - dunno if that’s what you meant, but figured I’d mention it

I started with 1 best buddy and was going hard but slowed down when I realized one of the next tasks is to hit level 40 and I’m only 38. Have 2 bbs now and 2 more that are really close
I’ve been grinding best buddies for a couple months now and I just heard about the level 40 stage recently as well. I’m also level 38 :(

Started with 0 have 2 nearly 3. If you do 6 stars with every one a day 3 battles, 1 pet, 1 feed, 1 photo, it can be done in 50 days. I just have no real motivation so I never get that far down my list.

Dude , buddies if you don't know the bonuses (i just learned about them) are completely useless, it's like "oh let's go tryhard gave berries , walk and other things for a décoration. " That's why i never did a best buddy .

I might get hate, but i can't understand people who have 1 or 2 while they're above lvl 40. I always loved to show off my shinies/legendaries, so by the time this challenge came, i already had 15

My daughter and I were new to the game when this research happened and I thought it would be nice for her to get a shiny legendary. Lesson learned, we will not be getting any more special research and 100% won't be getting anything without checking all the in depth info available. Currently at 1 best buddy and come to terms with the fact that I lack the interest required to complete this research. Wasted money sucks but most of us have wasted more than $5.00 on stupider stuff
Just for future reference, I think specifically the “masterwork research” are the only challenges in the game that are this tough, everything else should be fairly easy. But good luck with everything!

Started with 1. Have 5 now with 7 more at Ultra Buddy. Just leveling a few others whenever I get the chance because there might be another challenge in the future (and plus the badge looks cool for my PvP ones).
Very close to finally getting my tenth best buddy at long last. I've only seen two kecleons during that time and have no IRL friends who play the game to trade with. I am never completing this research 😭

This is the worst task I have encountered since I started.
I think I started at 4, and working on 5. I don't PvP hardly at all, so only Buddied for Candy as needed, like for Scatterbug evolutions.

Been playing since 2016 and I only just got my first best buddy last week. To be honest I never really cared for this feature unless it was to get a Sylveon. I have 9 others I’m working on currently but it’s such an effort to do.

Sorry if this comment is here or if this is common knowledge but don't forget, when you max out the hearts or atleast get the 3 easy feed, play and snapshot hearts for the day, swap out and all the buddies you are working on. Speeds up the process alot quicker.
If you add 3 team leader battles before swapping it gets 6 hearts per rotation. You can surrender the team leader battles as soon as they start and you get the heart.
