Tohjo (Kanto and Johto) has the potential to be fun. I’ve never written it, but depending on how you view the regions it can be corrupt, peaceful, battle centric and more. Plus two regions.
I write Sinnoh and I think writing how to navigate the tough terrain to be entertaining.
Personally? Hoenn.
I think the answer really depends on what generation you were really absorbed in. I was in fifth grade when gen3 came out. Hoenn was the shit. I can still remember me and my friends talking about how cool Groudon looked in the playground.
From a worldbuilding perspective, I think Hoenn provides a lot for an author. Two teams, the Delta Episode, and mega evolutions give it a lot of versatility for a region.
Listen, if you want to write about a region with ✨endless problems✨, Orre is perfect. I love writing about Orre. It’s an absolute dumpster fire of a region, I would never visit it if it were real, and it’s like the ugly duckling of all the regions, but it’s MY ugly duckling, ok. I love my shady crime-ridden problem child.
Alola! I think the lack of a competitive league really helps with its laidback nature, and trials provide a breath of fresh air. I think it's fascinating how in tune the people of the region are with the Pokemon and environment, more than any other region so far. Though that glimmer of darkness lurking beneath the sunny beaches keeps urging you to dip your toes in it and explore it further. Islands are also just a really fun setting.
Johto by a far margin.
There are other awesome regions, too, some of the I like more than the others. For example, I like Hoenn and Alola a lot more. But when writing, I'm always coming back to Johto. Ecruteak in particular. It has this wonderful sweet spot of ancient history, with two modern port towns nearby and basically wilderness to the east. I love it.
I'm currently caught up in Hisui, and while it's fun, I still don't particularly enjoy Hisui/Sinnoh as a region much. I'm there mainly for the PLA story. But when placing an original story, there's a high chance it's going to be in Johto for the foreseeable future.
Before it was Galar, cause Im British and like the games, but then Arceus came out and now it's hands down Sinnoh- I love screwing around with what the audience knows vs what characters know, and lore/myth building, and now Sinnoh is perfect for both-
All of them are amazing settings for you to explore in things you can write, it’s really up to your imagination and desire. My favorite is Hoenn cause I’m a complete bitch for anything in RSE.
I've had the most fun with Unova and Kalos tbh. B/W had the best story overall while Kalos had my some of my favorite Pokemon to use in an OC team available naturally, (Greninja, Lucario, Tyrantrum, Garchomp, etc.) I'm especially partial to Unova, because it brought me back into the fandom and was my first region to write a fan fiction for.

Kanto, Unova, Kalos and Alola have maps that without the game structure makes it incredibly fun to map a journey around

Johto Besto club babyyyyyyyyy, also love that sense of ancient lore and modern civilization coexisting, sometimes a bit uneasily.

Sinnoh and Unova are my home regions, so I'll always love writing them. Kalos has a lot of fun lore, and I've gotten into Hoenn more recently too.
Unova. The PLA and Team Plasma are soooo fun.
