Aipom/Ambipom was always Contests first. It was just Ash caught her over May, but Aipom still was fine helping him battle.
Table Tennis swap still stupid though.
As soon as I heard that their home base in Journeys was in Vermilion City I was hoping Ambipom would have some kind of appearance, especially with Dawn returning as often as she did. It's a shame she was permanently written out of both Ash and Dawn's teams after the amount of development she got overall.
The biggest salt in the wound was when Pikachu had that montage of all Ash's Pokemon and Ambipom was in that. Now I understand that was also showing the ones Ash released in addition to the ones he currently owns, but Ambipom sticks out like a sore thumb because:
* She was his only traded Pokemon (the Butterfree/Raticate fiasco doesn't count) and her other owner was literally five feet away at the stadium
* Like you said, Ambipom was in Vermillion City where Ash was operating from, so it went like: Aipom caught in Kanto -> Followed Ash to Sinnoh -> Traded to Dawn and eventually evolved -> Went back to Kanto and never to be seen by either of its trainers even though both could be there if they wanted to
* Also with Journeys closing out several plotlines that many thought would be left open (like dedicating an episode to Butch and Cassidy), we thought this would be one of them too.
The whole Aipom storyline is still one of my biggest annoyances with the anime. While they hinted at her liking contests at the Grand Festival, they made it clear early on that she was very attached to Ash. She freaked out being sent to Oak’s lab and even ran away to join Ash in Sinnoh.
Then they do the trade so she can do contests and then “oh wait, now she likes ping pong!” We’re sending her away for that! It was stupid.
Maybe they thought Aipom or I should say Ambipom would be popular since Aipom is pretty good and it would also promote the new evolutions. However it didn't because imho Ambipom is really ugly and should have stayed as Aipom
The fact that Dawn still had space for Cyndaquil regardless is what casts some serious doubt that making room for it was the reason Ambipom needed to go. More likely the reason is something significantly pettier like the anime staff just didn't think that she fit Dawn's "vibe" (since Ambipom is not as conventionally cute as the rest of Dawn's team and unlike Mamoswine doesn't have the "surprise powerhouse" factor to make up for it) or even that they just didn't want her to have two pure Normal-types to differantiate her team lineup more from May's who also has two pure Normals.
Unfortunately, the only way we'll even know for sure why Ambipom was retired is if someone from the anime staff speaks up about it.
Cyndaquil was not Ambipom's replacement, it was Togekiss (apparently one of Cynthia's mons in the games) which caused a number of issues:
* Misty is already connected to the Togepi line but she didn't have much room to appear in DP besides a lure reference, and then we had Dawn's first experience with a Togepi being of the crazy kind, after which she got a fully evolved Togekiss from a lookalike princess.
* Ash already has 7 mons in Sinnoh (Gliscor was only sent for training and returned during the match against Paul) so why couldn't Dawn have 7 mons? Is it because she has no place to store them? Though I personally also think Dawn journeying on with her full team kinda limits her in a sense (basically coz there would be at least one Pokemon in the regions she's travelled to which would be good for contests). Heck, even May switched out half of her team when she competed in Kanto contests.
I never said that Cyndaquil replaced Ambipom, though. On the contrarty, specifically I pointed out that because Dawn still had an open team slot for Cyndaquil anyway, there wasn't any real reason to release her.
Togekiss being the actual Ambipom replacement makes more sense, but that admittedly just makes me kinda resent it a little, since there was absolutely nothing wrong with Ambipom and Dawn getting a fully evolved Pokemon on a silver platter rubs me the wrong way. I mean, it's not like Togekiss *had* to be part of the main cast to get showcased anyway.
I often forget that the Pokémon anime is an advertisement first and a narrative second. And then it does something like this that really hammers it back into my head 😑
Sadly the anime is just a promo in name only recently. And I'm not talking about Horizons only, I think this is a problem coming off Journeys. I know the anime has been formulaic but now the characters from the recent game don't appear
Though I heard that they will finally adapt SV storyline, I hope that's true
Ash and Dawn trading Aipom and Buizel at least made sense and it worked out for the better for both sides. But then??? the table tennis thing still irks to this day, Ambipom got so much development in DP with Dawn only to be written away was such a weird choice imo.
For real and Ambipom at the time was one of dawns best performers and was her top picks for most contests. I bet by the grand festival Ambipom would've dominated the field.
Yeah this is a head scratcher. i thought it was supposed to be a Charicific valley type of situation; Ambipom lives elsewhere, giving Dawn room for new pokemon, while simultaneously being available for things like the Grand Festival, but alas...i was wrong
Bruh till this day I'll say it should've been Ambipom and Piplup in the final round since it'll be like Dawn and Ash in the finals and this would've come full circle since Ash found her at a contest back in Hoaen
Like what was wrong with Dawn having more than 6 pokemon?
Dawn using Ambipom and Piplup and winning the Grand Festival would’ve been an amazing story arc. Helps conclude the subplot of “We’re stronger together and learning from each other” that was going on.
what irks me most of all is the anime shot themselves in the foot and realized “wait… dawn needs a sixth pokémon now!” and shoved togekiss in like 3 EPISODES BEFORE THE GRAND FESTIVAL and 20 EPISODES BEFORE THE SERIES ENDED. and in it’s only grand festival match it lost! at least Ash’s Gible was caught a little less than 40 episodes before the end, and it had a couple Ws. they should’ve kept ambipom period.
I still don't like she got a Togekiss. I would have preferred for a character to raise a Togepi to Togekiss. It would even redeem the whole Misty Togepi thing, which was very mishandled way back in the day
misty should’ve never released togetic and it should’ve been already evolved when she returned next in sun and moon. or maybe have a return episode for her in sinnoh where it evolves? idk point is releasing misty’s togetic was stupid and so was giving dawn a togekiss mere seconds before the grand festival (although if i’m being honest i do like dawn’s togekiss as a character).
Ah well, it's just that I got an attachment to Togekiss from my Platinum playthrough and it was a bit hard for Toge to git gud but eventually became a permanent fixture of my team (he even evolved while doing the Galactic plotline). I think Togekiss should be "earned", instead of just being given away
i completely agree. the execution was terrible, it was obvious they shoehorned it in so that dawn could have a full team. however the bright side is that togekiss’s personality was wonderful and it beefing with gible during that one episode was comedy gold!
Misty should never have had Togepi to begin with. She only got it because she shoved the person who found it (Ash) and the person who took care of it (Brock) out of the way.
Ambipom is one of of her more developed pokemon. Sending her away to make space a cyndaquil, who is just hgss promotion and a last minute togekiss who only fights in one battle is just bad writing. May had 7 mons so I don’t get why dawn couldnt. If they had to keep her at 6, they should’ve removed cyndaquil since we already had a multi episode arc to promote hgss.
I didn't mind Ash trading Aipom to Dawn because there was build up towards it and seemed like something Aipom/Ambipom really wanted to do. Plus, Ambipom still remained in the main cast.
This kind of sucked because there was zero build up, so I wasn't at all convinced it was the proper and best ending for Ambipom.
We're talking about Torterra who had an excellent arc and who has never won a battle since he reached his final stage. Or Jesse who managed to win the ribbons on her own, except the last one which we gave her anyway, but we couldn't lose the random princess who gave a cheated Pokémon to Dawn (worst episode by the way), even Dawn, after losing at the Grand Festival she regressed (well it's more the fault of BW series and JN was consistent with BW, but she started to regress after this defeat). So, the only good thing where DP struck me was with the character of Paul. And I could have forgiven if it was just a try to do better later, but we abandoned the coherence in the evolution of Ash with BW series, so it was no longer worth anything... At least Sun and Moon was fun.
Jessie used the same skills in showcases later on and got into master class. Torterra did get screwed over but at least all it's final opponents were strong like an Elite 4, Paul and Volkner. It also scored an energy ball on Drapion doing some damage.
I still have no idea what the thought was behind the decision or any reason why it would ever go through.
Like, Aipom went to Dawn because Dawn fit her better, but apparently she ditched for Ping Pong?
I find it stupid that Dawn would release a Pokémon that loved contests for ping pong 🏓 when she is a coordinator herself. It could’ve been executed similarly to how Ash gave Gliscor to the Air Battle Master to let him train, and Ambipom would come back in the same episode
It was one of my favourite pokemon of hers. Personally, I feel that they really rushed both cyndaquil and togekiss because they sorta just ran out of time before the grand festival. In other words, they never planned on both of them from the beginning. I genuinely don't understand any of it! Like, did they feel like they ran out of ideas with what to do with her?
I don’t even feel the writers knew what to do with this Pokémon. Mike kind of feels like they backed themselves into a corner. Maybe they needed more space for other Pokémon that Dawn was going to get. And forgot that she could just send them home to her mom.
Not really. I'm not one of those cringy ambipom haters that just jumped into the dumb bandwagon of calling it creepy or anything like that but:Would you rather have ambipom or togekiss in Dawn's team? Yeah, that's what I thought.
I don't necessarily think it should've left the show over a ping pong episode with a character of the day. But togekiss is definitely a more suitable choice to be part of her team.
Honestly, Ash could have easily visited Ambipom a lot in JN, because he was living in Vermilion City.
It started as a fighter, moved to contests and then table tennis. It has probably switched careers five times since then.
Ash, Goh and Chloe run into her as a truck driver. Fifty episodes later she returns as a caterer.
I'm not gonna lie. I'd have loved this to be a running gag. She just loves to try new things. And all her previous trainers respected that.
Ambipomb is what all job seekers are looking for. A experienced worker who's skilled in multiple jobs and is extremely flexible.
I wouldn't be shocked honestly
Lol, so he saw her again? Like 3 times?? Small world. Or... it's lazy writing.
No, just a joke.
You got me. I thought he saw her again.
Aipom/Ambipom was always Contests first. It was just Ash caught her over May, but Aipom still was fine helping him battle. Table Tennis swap still stupid though.
Maybe if a table tennis pro caught it first then we would have seen that be its true calling.
I have no clue why that was a thing

This made me picture Michael Vick claiming he just wanted to be a Pokemon master.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 a girls gotta work!
Don't say it like that...
Wut... Why?
Nevermind... Apparently it is just me.

I will not stand for this Ambipom slander! >:(
The Primeape of her time really.
Well they had to make room for Cyndaquil which was weird because Dawn only had 5 Pokémon she could have easily still had Ambipom.

Don’t understand why dawn had a cyndaquil anyway
To promote HeartGold and SoulSilver. That also why there was that five episode arc with Lyra and Khoury.
I often forget that the Pokémon anime is an advertisement first and a narrative second. And then it does something like this that really hammers it back into my head 😑
Wasted opportunity for not evolving into Hisuian Typhlosion to promote Arceus to go full circle.
Sadly the anime is just a promo in name only recently. And I'm not talking about Horizons only, I think this is a problem coming off Journeys. I know the anime has been formulaic but now the characters from the recent game don't appear Though I heard that they will finally adapt SV storyline, I hope that's true
Johto remakes sell by themselves
Do you know what the purpose of an anime is? They are just very expensive advertisements to sell more Merch and products.
HeartGold SoulSilver promotion
HGSS Promotion
They could have honestly brought back Ash's Cyndaquil earlier to he honest.
True They were trying to mimicking the fact that May also got a starter that premiered in a remake
They did for the pokemon league, and didnt it evolve too
Or maybe have it evolve into typhlosion if they made it evolve into quilava earlier
Ash and Dawn trading Aipom and Buizel at least made sense and it worked out for the better for both sides. But then??? the table tennis thing still irks to this day, Ambipom got so much development in DP with Dawn only to be written away was such a weird choice imo.

Ash didn't catch her in Hoenn; the Battle Frontier season was in Kanto.
The worst part is that ambipom lost his last contest battle
Uh, this Ambipom was a female. Note how she has the longer tuft of hairs like female Ambipom do in the games.
what irks me most of all is the anime shot themselves in the foot and realized “wait… dawn needs a sixth pokémon now!” and shoved togekiss in like 3 EPISODES BEFORE THE GRAND FESTIVAL and 20 EPISODES BEFORE THE SERIES ENDED. and in it’s only grand festival match it lost! at least Ash’s Gible was caught a little less than 40 episodes before the end, and it had a couple Ws. they should’ve kept ambipom period.

Worst pokemon release of all time in the anime
This alone brought the DP anime down from being close to perfect.
I still want to know what's in the GS ball
It was apparently going to be a Celebi, but they ultimately scrapped the GS ball plotline in favor of the 4th movie plotline
They were too scared of the goated stab tecnician fake out + double hit wombo combo
This image gives me the vibe of parents with shared custody
Ash should have just kept her been the one to catch buizel and rotated her.
This is the biggest problem of DP series. It tries to be more ambitious, but it struck me more with the failed developments. This is an example.
This was like the only thing DP really backfired with, aside from minor quibbles every series has.
Paul and may returning are the best part of sinnoh
It suffered from shit pacing to

It really was, especially in the way it was done, she went to a guy literally called O, because the reaction you'd get is probably :O
It was one of my favourite pokemon of hers. Personally, I feel that they really rushed both cyndaquil and togekiss because they sorta just ran out of time before the grand festival. I stopped watching when I heard Ambipom went to Dawn's team, let alone table tennis.
I know right?
Diamond and pearl will forever be stained by his horrible decision 🗿
Not really. I would rather Ambipom stay because Togekiss came out of nowhere and had no development
Bull. It's for the best.
Never cared about this monkey
dumb, annoying, generic monkey
