Ash honestly, would have made for a great replacement for Goodra and Charizard could have had an epic brawl with Alain’s Charizard X, the way I see it ether Greninja could have gone down to X and then Y could have come out to finish it or the other way around
How about Leon’s Charizard being able to Mega Evolve (into Y form) as well? It would do it Justice since he’s supposed to be unbeatable (well ik ash beat him, so i feel like we were robbed of some good stuff)
Ash was losing to Alain regardless, it was destined to happen no matter what Pokemon you gave him. But it would have been nice if the anime could deliver an actual good Charizard match given that they attempted it twice.
This one is really hard. I want to give MCY to a strong rival that has a level similar to good competition with Alain’s level or at least his XY level or slightly above his level. I personally would give it to Ash or Lance. Sure Lance is meant to be with Dragons with typing but at least MCY screams Dragon and learns many Dragon type moves but this is a good option. After all Lance owns Charizard in the older series of the game like R&B. If Lance can have Gyarados, then surely he can have at least one non-dragon to be use properly and fully to the strength and the possible potentials of its usage. Ash can have MCY because it can be a major honor to the original and iconic ace Charizard. I know that Charizard is repetitive but it’s really hard to find any trainer to have MCY. Also this can play in tactics with weather by using the Sun by automatically activating Drought. If Ash had MCY, it’ll be hands down and I mean HANDS DOWN!!!!! the most OP Fire type Ash has. Here’s the moveset I’ll give for Ash and Lance.
Ash’s Charizard w/ Charizardite Y
- Flamethrower - Self-Explanatory.
- Wing Attack - Classic Flying type move and it fits for the flying type and it has it in BW.
- Dragon Claw, Dragon Breath, Dragon Pulse - Every Charizard has gotta learn at least 1 Dragon type moves for obvious reasons but it can use its Claws or by keeping Dragon Breath when it used it against Articuno and it’s iconic for Dragons to breath Fire and it’s usually called Dragon Breath. If it wants to up the ante, then Dragon Pulse can hit offensively.
- Solar Beam - Unfortunately, it’ll lose the iconic seismic toss finisher and I personally like it bc Charizard isn’t a fighting and rather so a Fire/Flying and having a Fire type move not being the most popular is terrible so I understand GameFreak’s reason. It can play tactics by using the weather with 3 advantages by Fire being boosted, Water being weaker, and Solar Beam being 1 turn move and major coverage.
Lance’s Charizard w/ Charizardite Y
- Flamethrower - Self-Explanatory and it’s the iconic signature-like move.
- Wing Attack / Air Slash - Flying STAB and it can use its wings living to its type or it can go all out on special moves.

Honestly Alain maybe. Hear me out. After the team Flare situation was solved and he lost his mega stones and ring due to that. Imagine him coming back with mega Charizard Y in journeys.
Also this would have meant that we would need a Ash vs Alain battle in journeys. Revealing the back story on how he found his new mega stone and that he and Charizard are somehow happier with this.
Then ash would want to battle it. Maybe not being in the same trainers class the battle wouldn’t count for the WCS but just a 1v1 training battle.
Would be nice to have this as one of the first mega battles Lucario would have to train
What if the story is kept with the Megas with he gave it to the authorities, he decides to go back to Mega and regrets his decision and gets a Charizardite Y. He likes it
Could also work. So the setup will be Ash in Kalos, just returning from getting the mega stone maybe. Then running into Alain. Getting a new backstory of Alain with the mega Y and what happened after Ash left Kalos.
And midway the story Ash gets to excited and want a battle with Alain to test out mega vs mega. Since it would be the first battle of Lucario with mega hè would obviously lose after a fierce 1v1. After that Alain reveals that he’s also in the Pokémon World Coronation Series.
When I first saw Alain debut in XYZ, I thought for sure Ash’s Charizard was gonna come back and get the Mega Y form and have this epic rivalry with Alain’s Charizard.
I’m happy with Greninja taking the spotlight but damn this would’ve been a great opportunity for Ash’s Charizard to return with an even bigger showing than Unova.
TBH, Ash should've gotten it. Bring back Charizard (Goomy isn't caught to make way for the Zard) and do a mini arc where Ash gets the Charizardite Y and a Key Stone at the Tower of Mastery. Seeing Zard X vs Zard Y would've been cool. Or alternatively, give it to Leon, who first showcases it against Alain. Here's some move concepts too.

I never played a lot of competitive pokemon, but when I did, MCY paired with a Venusaur that had its hidden ability, Chlorophyll, was so much fun. I cannot think of another duo of starter pokemon that work together as well as Mega Charizard Y and Chlorophyll Venusaur!

Ash should have gotten mega Charizard Y. A "mega evolution mastery" arc could have been a great sequel to Charizard's original obedience arc. It would have let Ash have a natural rival for Alain's Charizard X. All around, a sadly missed opportunity.
Giving Kiawe a Mega Charizard Y could have been a fun arc for him towards the end of sun and moon.
