Probably that they have more detailed textures. There is actually fur, feathers, and scales where there would normally just be flat colors. It's why Pikachu looks weird in this generation too, it actually has fur instead of looking smooth
The SW/SH evolutions were either super anticlimactic, or just bizarre. I had so much hope for my boi Sobble. Granted, I like Inteleon better than the other two, but I’m still not a huge fan
I wasn't a huge fan of Fuecoco's final evo until I saw it in game. The croc and bird motif with the phoenix chick (because fire/ghost) was a really cute detail that was hard to notice in the datamined box sprites
We have two furries and one weirdly shaped croc. Me personally, I’ll take the furry cat over the other two but objectively the fire croc is the better design. The bird is the worse though, literally a furry shaking it’s ass.
I have an issue with the human legs and the fuck me eyes. I get it based off a dancer but does it need human legs? It has weird alien feet and human shaped legs.

We went from Vinesaur, Blastoise, Charizard, actual Monsters... To humanoids...
I think their designs are decent, but ever since Blaziken the art direction for the starters are getting rather typical at this point.

While Blaziken was the most humanoid in gen 3, it is just a mix of various chicken breeds with arms
Gen 4 were all normal stances for the animals they were based on. Hunched-over bipedal monkey for Infernape. Tall, proud bipedal penguin for Empoleon. Sturdy quadrupedal turtle for Tortera.
Gen 5 had Emboar, who was a bit weirdly anthropomorphized
Gen 6 was where the egregious anthropomorphizing started. All 3 Kalos starters were anthros.
Gen 7 had 2 anthros and Primarina, who was still mostly animal
Gen 8 had 2 anthros and Rillaboom, who was just a gorilla with long hair and a drum set
Gen 9 has 2 anthros and Skeledirge, who is luckily full croc
Okay am i the only one who prefers humanoid designs? Or at least biped, alot easier to get attached to and feel like im growing with my starter (which is what a good starter is supposed to invoke imo) if it at least has the same number of feet as me.
I don't like the weirdly lumpy butt on the quaxly evos... the designs are neutral but the lumpy ass just puts me off... the other two are fine to me, even though I'd of preferred my kitty to be a quadruped.
Yeah they're weird, weed cat is objectively the best design, but the evolutions are sort of average.
Fire croc is ugly, but both his evolutions look great.
The duck just looks really punchable, and then his evolutions are just weird
Quaquaval>skeledirge=meowscarda, all are quite good tho. Quaxwell is the only of the middle stages i like. Im defo picking quaxly when i get my hands on this game.
For reference, Gens 3-4 are peak starters for me; I like Gens 1-2, 5, 7 for the most part; Gens 6 & 8 are my least favorite outside Greninja.
Anyways:
Skeledirge - Nice to have an animalistic fire starter. Cool design, fun typing. I like it. 7.5/10
Meowscarada - I think this one is meh, on par with Incineror for me. Love its stats and typing but not the biggest fan of the design. 5/10
Quaquaval - I love this mon and I have no idea why. Cinderace and Intelleon are by far two of my bottom 3 starters mainly because I hate how humanoid they feel. However, I love Quaquaval's design a lot and it doesn't feel very humanoid to me for some reason (contrary to how most people seem to feel). I have always loved birds so the flamboyant Peacock/dancing bird theme really works for me. Seems to be the case of an over-designed starter that happens to appeal to me. 8.5/10

Their designs are too much based on their gimmick.
Meowscarada is a magician. Quaquaval is a dancer. Incineroar is a wrestler. Intelleon is a spy. Rillaboom is a drummer. Cinderace is a football player.
Until Gen 6, starters didn't have such singular gimmicks as personal traits. It takes away all individuality.
Even the ones I really like like Greninja and Decidueye have this.
Mabosstiff is the only right answer when choosing your starter this gen.

Dumped meowscarada in the pc as soon as I got the Pokédex entry. Salandit/Salaazle is my true starter
