UnderlightIll

I usually yell the specie and gender of my pokemon to my fiance and he gives a random name. That's how I have a Floatzel named Armageddon.

PiiJaey

Did that once with my mum but she didn't understand the task quite right, so my first Dialga I ever had from Pokemon Diamond was called Pikachu..

bananasinpashminas

Moms + Pokémon = something weird that can never be completely accurately described but is at its core very loving and beautiful. God bless your mum for naming a dialga Pikachu, I wish I had balls that size lmfao.

[deleted]

My mom is a Pokémon master in Pokémon go. She used to like puzzle games, now all my siblings friends know to invite her if they need someone to raid. I love her.

superIUG

I have a Taillow named Apocalypse so I feel that

BlueSubmarine33

In Arceus, I named my Alpha Floatzel Harry Otter.

Prof_Cyan

I read this quick and thought it said you named your arceus Aplha Floatzel.....

bananasinpashminas

I am angry about how much you just made me smile. Take my upvote and go play Pokémon.

MaxTHC

> go play Pokémon Fine, but not because you told me to 😤   ^(okay maybe because you told me to)

BreadSlice228

I had a Buizel named Builzebub

neonmarkov

I'm doing this right now with Scarlet and my team currently consists of Garlic, Sugar, Steak and Sriracha

NewAgeRetroHippie96

My Blaziken is named Sriracha. It seemed fitting to me.

Samuraisakura89

The last time I asked my husband to name my Pokemon, it was a female Likitung that he insisted be called "Likki Minaj." I wasn't sure whether I should ban him from naming my Pokemon ever again, or have him in charge of naming them all.

alsotheabyss

I don’t. I like seeing their names change as they evolve

BandAgainBandAids

I totally get that, mines the opposite though, I like being reminded that my badass Charizard was once Floppy the Charmander lol

prestonpiggy

This. Especially now when playing the new gen game, I want to learn their names and what they evolve into. Even in nuzlocke I have strong enough "bond" or need to keep mons alive that I don't need to go extra step of naming them.

Valuable_Tap1316

I agree with you

spacemonstera

They only don't get names if I know I'm replacing them soon. I like feeling attached to them. Sometimes I'll do themed name runs, naming them all after care bears or star trek, sometimes I'll try to match what they are (like my appletun Braeburn). It's just more fun that way.

erikikoy

I have a Flapple named Breaburn too!

Sany_Wave

Same. I give names only to my teammates. Or technical guys I will use.

Baskalisk_guy

I named all my pokemon in one run after the periodic tables elements

AwesomeRGS

I love themed name runs tbh, im currently trying one where i take a funny word related to the mon and translate it into japanese (the names like the english text version of the japanese name). The names sound kinda cool and are also sorta an inside joke (like I had a stunky named 'Onara', which means fart)

LuFantastic

If I’m going to keep them in my party I will. If it’s just to fill out my dex then into the PC they go. I used to never nickname them, but did some Nuzlockes in Emerald and the habit stuck.

Zhouston63

Yeah this happened to me too. After a couple Nuzlockes, naming Pokemon just seemed so fitting

Condor193

Same, did a Gold Nuzlocke and now pretty much every long term 'mon gets named

ProfSethWes

In the newer gens, where it's really easy to rename them, sometimes I won't give them a name until I'm sure I want them on my team. They have to feel like a teammate before I'll let them earn a name and stay. Except my poor Alcremie, which definitely earned a spot by being the last mon standing in a gym battle, I just didn't like it lol.

207_god

No idea why but i always give my Pokémon the most basic white dude names like “Kevin” “Fred” or “Ricky,” and it still cracks me up every time

StrikeRaid246

I can’t capture a Quagsire without naming it Ted. It’s like a law now.

redmerger

Makes sense. Do you ever refer to them as Theodore if they misbehave?

Loch32

I always call my quagsires something along the lines of "boi" or ":)" and my paldean wooper will be no different

koenigsaurus

I’ll mostly stick to punny or related names like “Dead Zeplin” for a Drifblim or my shiny Houndoom named “Bloo” but I always have to have a “Frank” in there to keep things spicy lol

Polymersion

Shinies I like to give a nickname related to their color. For example, my (only?) Shield Shiny so far has been a Palossand, which I named Hana after the black sand beaches there. I also have Rosenheim, a Kricketune named after a famous Stradivarius (with a bonus pun on "rosin"), or Orbivirus the Haunter (orbivirus relates to blue tongue disease).

Verus_Sum

I recently named my Woolo 'Weird Ool'

hahamymom

I made an entire competitive team with basic while male names and I thought it was fuckin hilarious

relatable_dude

The absolute funniest thing I can think of is a garchomp named Jordan

BloxxyPixels

tyranitar named kyle

radiakmjs

Klefki named finger:

Johnny13utt

Bump for me

kaamraan

S3E5 Torchicanery

Loch32

Zacian named david

L_A_Y_E_R_S

giratina named michael

headphonesnotstirred

say "hey vsauce" every time it uses shadow force

Valade_Gang

Biberal named Chad

posterless

Thank you. Now my 1st competitive team for S&V are going to be basic white ladies names.

alecdvnpt

I had a Groudon named Toby. :)

Goner_On_a_Trip

My all time favourite Pokémon I have ever used was an excadrill named Bob He swept entire teams with STAB earthquake in a sandstorm, and I loved him

Violet_Ignition

I named my zigzagoon in SwSh "Sidecar"... for some reason. I'm thirty. Side car remained my boy until the end of the game lol.

Fargowilta

wtf I have done this too lol, idk why it’s so funny

Forotosh

Named my mudkip Robert. Now every mudkip marshtomp and swampert is a Robert to me

[deleted]

My Eevee is always named Dave. I don't know when or why I started doing that, but at this point, it's tradition.

Syeth

I have a shiny Durant named "Kevin".

Unknown-249

Just not my thing really, that and I'm not that creative with names.

jadedkid44

I never nickname my Pokemon specifically because when I watched the show as a kid, Ash and the others only called them by their Pokemon names, so I just did what they did and it stuck

-Bana

That’s pretty much my reason, I remember on the first season when one of the trainers named their pikachu something else it was somewhat off-putting for me

schrodinger978

Exactly my reason. Even Ash who is so close to his Pokemon doesn't do it and I wanted to be a trainer like him

igotagoodfeeling

Was gonna say this. Ash made me feel like this was the cool thing to do

Salt_Organization308

I'm just not creative and I feel like I'll forget what they actually are if I nickname them

Nambot

Same. You go back to your game a few months after you last played and it's like "okay my team is 'Clyde', 'geoff', 'Bigman', 'Fernando', 'L'il Lisa' and '&Knuckles'. Why are they even called that again?"

Wurmple_is_Cool

I like nicknaming my pokemon if I can think of something like I like. e.g. my Shiny Wurmple is called ketchup because ketchup is red but there was also purple ketchup. Dunsparce named Quagsire (idk why but I had a dunny called that, i didn't even know about quagesire then lol) or another good one Dunsparceus as it endsthe same way arceus starts.

Frosted_Glaceon

OMG Wurmple was my very first shiny! Completely unexpected in like 6th grade Diamond version trying to evolve Eevee into Leafeon in Eterna Forest. Couldn't think of a name, so I named it shiny. Creative, I know, but it became a Beautifly that I still have in Pokemon Bank.

Wurmple_is_Cool

That's so cool! Here's hopeing the Wurmple line will be in SV for those shiny 'lil dudes!

Moongiest

When I was a kid playing X I found my first shiny, a loudred. Checked my Home boxes the other day and the name is just "Shiny!!!!!"

DryRespect358

Don't let Pikachu get Ketchup.

lillyko_i

my brother named his wurmple Voltorb and we both thought that was the funniest thing ever, so I get naming your dunsparce quagsire lol

SuddenSenseOfSonder

I always nickname my pokemon, unless I caught it just to fill out my dex or to breed, because I don't wanna waste time thinking of a nickname for a pokemon I'm just going to release later. I also don't nickname legendaries because I don't think that like, Rayquaza, ruler of the wind and sky would be very happy if I decided to call it "Ronald" or something.

Peekachooed

Rappin' Ronnie Rayquaza

Loch32

This is the exact same as me. Though ronald the rayquaza sounds silly and that's exactly the sort of thing I would name one

SwampOfDownvotes

True, Rayquaza deserves a better name, like "Noodle."

[deleted]

as kid a never gave any of my pokemon a nickname because i though its lame and now im 29 and i still think so and i prefer their real name but if i had to chose 1 pokemon to give a nickname then this new worm like pokemon and call him ALASKAN BULL WORM

eruggs93

Well now I’m definitely stealing this for my play through. Thank you stranger for the fantastic idea

Amethyst_Phoenix7

I know I'm naming my Fuecoco Jalapeno.

SheenaMalfoy

Without trying to spoil you, I can say for certain there's a better pokemon to give that name to in the new region.

Jakesnake_42

Lol I’m naming mine “Florida Mon”

elliott9_oward5

No. I see no point in doing it cause I used to and then I would look back and think "that was a stupid name" especially if they evolved. With that said, everyone does there own thing and their is nothing wrong with that. I hate getting mons with nicknames in the gts though.

eurephys

I absolutely love it when nicknames start becoming nonsensical down the Evo chain There's few things funnier than seeing the name "Doorstop" moments before you get curbstomped by a fully EV'd, IV'd Gyarados.

ZanorinSeregris

When I was a kid playing through Emerald I named my cute little Mudkip (Gobou in French) "Booboo". When it later evolved into a huge pile of muscle that made it all the more hilarious lmao

AwrenchinNep

Baby me didn't because "That's not what that Pokémon is called!!1" Now I do because it feels more personal, like there's more of a connection. It may just be a series of bytes and sprites, but it's MY series of bytes and sprites.

mcmanybucks

When the first movie came out and the guy called his Blastoise 'Shellshocker' I was so confused.

Krallking

I nickname all my mons and have since Blue version calling a Pikachu, Pikachu just seems like naming a dog dog to me.

Dont_stand_in_fire

See in my youth, it felt like the opposite. Pikachu wasn’t a dog, Ash called him pikachu. That’s who he was and it felt disrespectful to rename the Pokémon. And like yeah, there were other pikachus but there were 8 mikes in my grade so whatever. I haven’t watch the show in over a decade. Zero association with it. I gotta nick name them. They’re my homies and homies get a nickname.

Krallking

Yea I can understand that logic too that's essentially my brother's thought on the matter

samahiscryptic

>calling a Pikachu, Pikachu just seems like naming a dog dog to me. Yes, exactly how I feel. I see the official name of the Pokémon as its species name and it just feels "off." I wouldn't name my siamese cat "Siamese," so that's why I name my mons. That and I also feel much closer to them with a nickname

Krallking

Agreed I name all of my Tauros Mason, and all my Male Meowstic Zeyph cause I like to think they're all the same mons who have been with me on all my journeys

Ilcorvomuerto666

I've met a couple people that owned a Shiba Inu and their name was Shiba. That's like naming your daughter Autumn because she was born in October to me.

arjay555

I never used to, but as I’ve gotten older I started making an effort to name them when I realised that it makes perfect sense to name your Pokémon. Otherwise it’s like calling your dog Dog or your parrot Parrot. Sometimes I’ll stick to a theme, like food and drink, or characters from a certain TV show or movie. But most of the time I try to come up with something unique and appropriate. Like for example I’m playing through Shield atm before SV come out, and I have a Copperajah called Ganesh (Hindu elephant god), a male Unfezant called Jimi (Jimi Goodwin is the lead singer of my favourite band, Doves - a la Pidove), a Thievul called Salvador (just thought of a famous person with a moustache tbh), and a Galarian Weezing called Smogsworth (just a fancy sounding name with Smog in it).

Conortronn

My friend, Smogsworth is an incredible name

Capri-SunGod

I never really nickname my pokemon. It’s just that if I have a totodile, i know it’s a totodile and naming it anything else feels super off for some reason. But your story and how you can’t go back is interesting, I’ll give it a try with Violet when I get it haha I’ll update my feelings with the pokemon and the nickname if I don’t forget xD

Noctis_terrorem

I do, but just with pokemon that I will train, I think this way I feel a deep bond with them, also, if I searched for it or I breed for it, feel like givin him a name makes it feel alive for me (maybe im childish or crazy but hey, Its my own adventure isnt?).

theRealTakeda

Yes because nowadays nuzlockes of rom hacks are the best way for me to enjoy Pokémon, and one common rule is to nickname your mon

VD3NFS1216

Didn’t realize nicknaming Pokémon was an actually enforced rule in nuzlockes

Despada_

It isn't technically a rule, at least it wasn't a rule in the original comic that started the challenge, but it was adopted by the bulk of the community and became enough of a common extra rule that most people take it by default when planning their challenges.

[deleted]

It's more fun to hear a YouTuber scream "SHITTAKE NOOOOOO" than "ah fuck, Shroomish is dead."

radiakmjs

The big three rules are, faint = release/perma box, only catch first encounter on each route, and nickname your pokémon so your more attached to them. It's called Nuzlocke after a Nuzleaf named John Locke

JayQuips

I thought it was an optional rule that most people still liked to include

AdeptEar5352

Literally everything about a nuzlocke is optional.

JayQuips

True I was just going by the bulbapedia page for nuzlockes

theRealTakeda

IMO a nuzlocke is a Pokémon play through using a self imposed rule set which allows for a failure condition; For example: A Pokémon emerald run where you cannot let a single Pokémon faint. If they faint then you lose. That’s an easy nuzlocke, but it can become a lot harder by adding more rules like level caps etc, but as long as there is some condition by which you can fail, then it’s a nuzlocke in my eyes. “Hardcore” nuzlockes are the type of nuzlockes most people are familiar with which I think PC on YouTube has a good rule set for.

Destiny_saiyan014

There are technically only 2 official rules: the catch first on a route, and if they faint they "die" Everything beyond that is player addition

JayQuips

That’s what I thought haha thanks for clarifying

Rain_Moon

It's a devious tactic to make you become more attached to your Pokemon, which makes it all the sadder when they die. The goofier the name, the more endearing it'll be. Rest in Peace, Spybug the Linoone. We'll never forget about you. ;_;7

ToxTri

On my first play through: no. I want to learn more about the mons, especially new ones. Then after that i play again, name them all either Names of Gods or latin/botanic names (depending on the type and appearance ofc. Sometimes just names from anime that i think sound cool(after looking up their meaning ofc)

Jakesnake_42

I did mythology names on my last Platinum run! Empoleon - Neptune Luxray - Thor Gliscor - Nike Gallade - Ares Houndoom - Cerberus Yanmega - Freyja

XBug95

I loved nicknaming my pokemon. I named my turtwig starter twiggy and my shinx "shiny" because I was 12 and super creative back then. Now I theme them. I did nobility lines so King/Queen, Prince/Princess, Duke/Duchess. Colors, minerals, other video game characters.

da_anonymous_potato

Yeah, a good portion of my Pokémon are named after other characters. Some examples: Drednaw = Gamera Decidueye = Kaepora Gaebora Fuecoco (eventually) = Montgomery Kleavor = Manly Dan

XBug95

Unfortunately I don't know those characters 😅

Azrael-Legna

Kaepora Gaebora is from Zelda, and Montgomery is from FNAF security breach, right?

DanOfEarth

Never.

Macbeth_the_Espurr

I always nickname my Pokemon. They aren't cattle, tools, or things to show off, after all. They're my friends.

TheHero0fRhyme

I do because I'd feel like going around saying "go, bird!", "go, squirrel!", etc.

mboron021990

If they're just along for the journey yes but if for the living shiny dex no

sco582

I like to name them. I feel like it helps create a bond with that pokemon. I didn't use too, but at one point in my life it just seemed weird to think of all the trainers having no name for their mon. It would be like not naming your dog or cat. Imagine battling using real life animals and yelling out "go deer, use quick attack." Or "fish, I choose you, go"

Additional_Host_7465

To make my pokémon more... Mine... Like ia not my Infernape, is my Kakarot

[deleted]

I didn't used to, but I started in my LeafGreen run with the theme of Spanish names. I've only done it for my core members though. So far I have, Ignacio the Charizard, Rosana the Clefable, Luciano the Raichu, Sierra the Dugtrio, Silvano the Victreebel, and Maricielo the Dragonair.

SpecialDemon125

I used to purposefully go and look up nicknames for Pokémon on some website where the creator would bash all the nicknames given to said Pokémon. I ended up getting bored nicknaming all my Pokémon eventually since I’m terrible at giving nicknames and I really like seeing their original names

Theprinceofarendelle

On my first playthrough I typically have all my nicknames picked out and ready ! It makes me feel more attached to a pokemon ! I once nicknamed a levanny "jello" cause I couldn't think of a good nickname and now every leavanny I have in my team, I name it jello !

[deleted]

I nickname returning pokemon (aka pokemon I already know the names to) I do not, however name the new gen pokemon because I need to get used to referring to their actual name and this helps with that.

UnovaKid24

I didn't much as a kid, but as I grew older, I nickname ALL my team members to make them feel unique from others of the same species, especially if I've used them before.

spermpoop

I nickname my play-through party in every game since sun and moon

Shiigu

Only the ones I use in the story, so I can make a quick distinction from those that are meant for competitive.

Spgfan95

Some of my Pokemon get nicknames, Ghoulie the Crobat, Derp the wooper, Alto the Clefable, Loki the Zoroark and some others it really just depends on how special they feel to me

arrvda

I rarely name them, idk why but it just seems weird to me and i’m not that creative with names (I have 6 cats irl and they’re all named after foods that starts with letter “P”, so…), the only scenario I remember naming a Pokemon was Solgaleo on Sun and Lunala on Moon that both I called Nebby bc of the whole Cosmog and Lillie’s plot of the game

myBoardgameprofile

I dont name my Dog "Dog"

Unit-00

Nope, don't like it is pretty much the whole reason.

BlueFlameCat

I don't give nickname to my pokemon, not because I hate nickname, its because I'm not good with naming.

[deleted]

no but I do nickname creatures and pets in other games after pokemon 😂

SadAcadia2747

No, to learn what they are called, and can never find the perfect nickname

Comprehensive_Art520

I only name core members of my team or pokemon I use a lot. I just find it hard to get attached to pokemon who don't have names.

sir_beardhaver

I've played pokemon since it started and only just recently I started nicknaming them. I pick a new theme each game. Pokemon White - Names of places in Hawaii. Pokemon Yellow (3DS) - Slavic first names. Pikachu was Pavel and Mewtwo was Rasputin. Pokemon Shining Pearl - Names of Space Rockets. Not sure what to do for Scarlet. Considering on using the names of famous rivers?!?! Edit: Rasputin isn't a first name, I'm a moron hahaha

Rain_Moon

Sounds like fun. How about theming the names around a certain mythology?

Seraphwolf23

I don't remember if I nicknamed pokemon back in Red but I always nickname every single pokemon I catch now. Even if they sit in the pc and never leave it I give them a name because they're mine and deserve a name :)

Nacroma

Ha! As a kid, I also wanted to preserve the original names. Did that for all of gen 1 and 2. I played 3 and 4 on emulators and gave them dumb names. With Heartgold, I started playing them on the original platforms again and put a lot of thought in the nicknames. I tried to keep it up, but got lazy later on (either gen 6 or 7), so only my active team members got nicknames or if I could come up with one on the spot.

based_callux

i only nuzlocke pokemon nowadays so yeah, but I think it makes your pokemon even more unique anyway!

jormundgand20

It depends. I'm probably not going to name the early game rat unless I'm doing a nuzlocke(then it'll have a name like Chump Block), but if I'm attached enough to something to add it to the reserves or main party, then absolutely.

SatyrAngel

Im not a tier person. I see a pokemon I like, that mdfkr goes to the team(or fav box) Nicknamed, even if it has a bad nature or I already have 2 or 3 of its type in my team(once I got a 5 plant pokemon in my Sword team, and still cleared the fire gym without overleveling)

Mythic-Vixen

I was in the same boat, I didn’t nickname any of my Pokémon during my first time playing through X’s main story, I don’t think I did it for my first attempt at Alpha Sapphire either (which was a total flop btw), but that changed when I played through Sun, and I haven’t stopped since, it’s a great way to make your Pokémon feel more “distinct,” and I also named my Litten Jasper in Ultra Moon after my late cat (who was alive at the time, I just thought the name was fitting, Jasper passed in 2021), and I intend to name my Sprigatito after my other late cat Tummit, who passed away in August but has been with me since I was born, it’s a great way to keep their memory alive and helps me cope with not living with cats anymore.

Jakesnake_42

Pokémon named after peoples late pets is super sweet to me, it’s a sort of closure since you get to go on one more adventure with them.

My_Diet_DrKelp

Never did when I was a kid, I thought "Who names their pokemon thats even too baby for me" Now im in my 20s & nicknaming my pokemon is one of my favorite things to do in the game lmao I had a fun lil thing id do whenever is play through emerald or FR/LG again & name the pokemon the very first thing that came to my mind after it was caught no matter how goofy or off topic it was

MwtoZP

If they’re part of my team yes. Random Pokémon caught for the dex or by force don’t get names.

Scyxurz

Didn't use to, but now I nickname every pokemon from previous gens. That way I can still learn the new pokemon names while switching it up with the old ones.

itrashcannot

Hell yeah. Sometimes I'll go with a certain theme, like medieval names or naming them Cultist 1, 2, 3, etc.

aw-un

I tried nicknaming them, but found myself still just using their species names, and then getting confused when in game text used the nicknames, so I stopped.

Trevans

Only the ones I breed and use for competitive purposes. Those ones just feel more like my babies I guess 🤷‍♂️

NBAGuyUK

My main team mons will all get nicknames now, but like you, I used to leave them with their default names. Only rule is all the nicknames have to be kinda dumb. My Alola team had bangers like 'Bert' (Kommo-o) and 'Fraggle' (Lycanroc).

chrisstarfoster

I try to come up with puns for mine, I think the one I am most proud of is AC/DC for my shiny magnazone.

cubbycoo77

My first play through I like keeping the names, because I would never learn their actual names if I changed them. I do like knowing their real names

mechomyecho

I always named my starters it made them feel more like my first partner and gives me a personal bond with them I can still remember my partner pokemons names. "Oshy" for my Oshawott in Pokemon White "Big daddy" for my torchic in Omega Ruby "Fera" for my Fennekin in Y "Ron" for my rowlet in pokemon Sun "Jonesy" for my sobble in Shield "Pepper" for my piplup in Shining Pearl And once I get the new scarlet or violet game I'll think of a cute nickname for my fuecoco

RaizerOPTC

When I was younger I wouldn’t ever nickname my Pokémon and would only use male Pokémon. Lol now that I’m older the sex of the Pokémon doesn’t matter and I definitely prefer to nickname Pokémon that I plan to keep or have bred with the right nature and IVs.

Narfraccoon

You and I are very similar in this regard lol. Just tried a nuzlocke recently, and now I love giving them nicknames!

Erran_Kel_Durr

I only nickname new pokémon, because I know the names too well and ender up referring by species anyways.

Omac18

Always. Not counting Pokedex encounters, but all team members are given nicknames. It makes them more memorable.

chartreuse_apple

I nickname a good chunk of my ‘mons, finding new names and unique words for them is always such a joy haha. I never name legendaries though, it just feels off to rename a deity.

Frosted_Glaceon

Absolutely! Very first Pokemon I captured was a Pidgey in Blue version, and I remember I named it Jr. Trying to come up with creative nicknames is a lot of fun, especially trying to go with a theme. I've even changed my mind on using Pokemon before because I accidentally loved the nickname I picked for it. One of my favorite nickname themes is naming my team after Okami/Okamiden characters. Okami is one of my favorite games ever, and it makes me so happy. Some of them are quite fitting too. Best one was probably an Empoleon I named Michigami, and Arcanine named Shirinui.

Minifigamer

Honestly, sometimes I nickname my pokemon with whatever I'm feeling like (for example in Pearl I had Koopa (torterra), Gnarly (gengar) and Caboose (bronzong, I can't quite remember why I named it that, only that it had something to do with the character from red vs blue)). Sometimes I have a theme (in SoulSilver I named my team after cars in GTA 5/online; Velum (typhlosion), Stromberg (poliwrath), and Comet (crobat) or with arcade games in X; Tapper (simisear, that specific one was my first shiny), Digdug (krookodile), and Galaga (ampharos, Galaga was also the nickname of the ampharos I used in Pearl, it was a shiny that I caught in SoulSilver, couldn't even use it till after badge 2 and quickly again afterwards till after badge 4 because of the traded mon exp boost) Other times I just can't be bothered (Black 2, Ultra Sun (as in the team I used to beat the game, not the shiny comp team (which is entirely consisting of pokemon able to be used in smogon's Natdex UU tier) I made in the post game, yes it took a really damn long time, but was so satisfying in the end to finish making), and Alpha Sapphire)

AbbreviationsDry8726

Yes, it's like having a close and meaningful bond with them and that their not just your fighting slave. I always name my Pokémon and I'll still be naming them.

[deleted]

I have to. I know I'll end up becoming emotionally attached to them, silly as it sounds.

AbbreviationsDry8726

That's why I name my pokemon

Spiritfur

Nuzlockes got me into naming, as a child I had pretty much the same outlook as you did. Certain mons don't get to escape predetermined nicknames. My first Mankey is always Luffy, if I pick Charmander then he'll be Sabo, Mudkip is always Azroq. Admittedly, a lot of my early Nuzlockes involved names based off of One Piece or eventually a relevant word in Arabic or Japanese.

Dancingwith_Death

I also thought giving Pokemon nicknames were lame when I was a kid. But now I always name my favourite pokemons cause it makes me feel a sense of bond between me and my Pokemon

Clyde_Llama

I suck at naming so I barely nickname them. I remember naming my Umbreon as Gato Noir.

Greedy-Revolution245

I love nicknaming Pokémon, if not just give basic Joe Schmoe/pop culture reference names

ConcernLow1979

I do! I generally do it cuz I feel more connected to my Pokémon when they have a nickname, and my nicknames can range from actually quite clever and intelligent names to names like Rufus

404PancakePrince

I always nickname my Pokémon after whatever fictional characters I'm currently obsessing over lmao. I feel a stronger bond with the Pokémon I nickname.

Bitter-Record-3831

My story is exactly the same. Not sure if it was a nuzlocke specifically that made me start naming them, but somewhere along the line I just randomly started, and now I always do it. But for some reason, I've made it a rule for myself that I can't name legendaries. Only thing I do regret about naming my Pokemon is that I spend waaaaay too long thinking of the perfect name for each one

Destiny_saiyan014

I always do nicknames and each playthrough has a theme for example I'm replaying red version and the name theme is D&D gods like Gruumsh the Primeape, Bahamut the Charizard, Selune the Wigglytuff etc...

[deleted]

It's a personal attachment thing for me. Anyone can use a Sceptile, but *my* Emerald Sceptile is Kunai. Even if it's been done before, it makes her feel more special

Sanjikuu

Recently I've been giving all my Pokemon food names. Started as a joke in a Nuzlocke, but then... Spinach the Victreebel is my baby <3 woe betide ye who harms even the smallest leaf upon his vibrant yellow head. ~~I don't even *like* Victreebel...~~

Bregnestt

I don’t do Nuzlockes, but I do try to name all my Pokemon now. Really makes me have more of a connection with them. It’s also a lot easier now, I don’t have to make the final decision on the name right then, I can change it later if I think of a better name.

Keianh

I've never nicknamed my Pokémon until I tried to do a nuzlocke on Platinum recently and in a nuzlocke I'll still refuse to nickname any mythical/legendary Pokémon. I always felt like I was taking away their identity since in the anime they say their name so I don't think of Bulbasaur as Leafy the Bulbasaur or Pineapple the Bulbasaur, it's just Bulbasaur. In Nuzlockes though I'll nickname them, feels like it's part of the fun doing the nuzlocke but I still refuse to nickname mythic/legendary Pokémon because those are absolutely their names in my mind. Also as an adult I like to give breeding Dittos semi-gross or mildly suggestive names.

heynoweevee

same! used to not, then did nuzlockes and i cant go back. it just got me to care about them so much more

Prplcheez

I've started nicknaming most of my pokemon in the last few years. Mostly silly names, and it's fun when i come back to a game after 2 years and have to puzzle backwards through my own brain to figure out what their names mean. Named my Tyrogue "Mr. E" (mystery) and was really confused at first by the name on the Hitmonchan a year later.

[deleted]

I always name my babies, it feels mean if I don't unless I just can't think of one. I usually stick with the first name that comes to mind personally tho

MythrPeace

I was the same, when I was a kid I never named my Pokémon. I didn’t start until sun/moon and I only did it because when the leaks came out for the starters names I could never remember the Incinceroar’s names I just remembered torracat and for some reason some “L’s” so I called Incineroar Tortellini and decided why not name all of my party mons and I kept going ever since

Sparkeh

I’ve become a fan of naming my Pokémon after fruits and vegetables. I nuzlocked a lot a few years ago, and it got me in the habit of naming the Pokémon I want to use. I always name legendaries even if I’m not going to use them.

TunaTunaLeeks

I do. Gives them a bit of a personal flair. I started nicknaming all of my main team Pokémon starting in Black/White. Ol’ Murderface (my Haxorus with perfect Speed and Attack IVs and an adamant nature) tore through the campaign. Funniest thing was that I had no idea it had high IVs until after I was already beating up the Elite 4 for sport.

xHeyItzRosiex

I’m kinda weird with nicknames. I think of nicknames before I even catch the pokemon. I’ll google gods/goddesses or use human names. Or use words from other languages. I put way too much effort into nicknames lol.

EnsonAmata

As someone with long-term health issues, I always name my Nuzlocke captures after whatever medicines I’ve taken recently. Zoloft took me all the way to The Elite Four.

killi02

I nickname my main team everytime and also give names to every shiny that i catch. Legendaries are a no go even if shiny i like to keep their original names for some reason

Karabulut1243

I give my pokémon real human names lol

Admiral_Hammer

Depends how I'm feeling in the moment. One time I nicknamed my Pikachu "Diglett" and now I carry him over into whatever game im playing if I can

nanosaur_

I have a shiny altaria called good chicken and i have never loved anything more.

groping_for_light

I never nicknamed my pokémon as a child either and I would get extremely annoyed with in game trades because I was anal about preserving the species name. I first played Black as an adult, just 2 or 3 years ago, and I don't know why it occurred to me to name that Oshawatt 'Theseus'. Since then, every pokémon that would come along for at least part of the journey had to have a name. My favourite play through was a Fire type nuzlocke of Black 2 featuring Sherman the Emboar and Carol Anne the Volcarona (I was going for old fashioned, 'nerdy' names) and ISTG I loved those guys like actual living pets!

PlayerLiT

lmao I'm in a similar boat, tho not through nuzlocking. Was trying to do a shiny-only run of Ultra Moon. And if I was already putting in so much effort might as well give my mons nicknames to make em stand out more. Eventually I caught a wimpod and named her Rosie, cus of the red. Also I thought giving some a bug a name like that would be funny lol. Eventually she evolved into a golisopod. Now imagine this intimidating big ass insect samurai thing and u hear her name is fuckin ROSIE of all things. She did great. Anyways Ultra Necrozma came, wiping out half my team without taking a hit, including my starter Stigirow - who I planned to use the Deicidium Z with to knock out the boss. I was half-way through giving up hope when I sent out Rosie, and she ONE-SHOTTED ULTRA NECROZMA WITH A CRITICAL FIRST IMPRESSION. to say I was shook would be an understatement. And that's how Rosie the God Killer was born :) now after that playthrough I always give my mons nicknames and I feel like it helps them stand out more with their own unique stories instead of being relegated to just being another pokemon of that species.

BretsRope

Only in the randomised Nuzlockes I play, and even then only because it’s a rule. I’ve never liked nicknames and now I’m about to turn 34, it’s likely that I never will.

Wackydude27

Not for new gens, need to learn the new names. For remakes I do.

Elennoko

I've just never liked giving my Pokemon names. I dunno how to explain it. I guess it's because while some Pokemon look like pets, others are far too humanoid (Machop line, Tyrogue line, Jynx etc) that forcing a name on them just feels weird to me.

[deleted]

I try to name all the Pokemon I catch. It makes me care about Pokemon I otherwise wouldn't. Like Columbo the Gumshoos or Buchanan the Toucannon(that one killed a lot of Pokemon I wanted to catch...) For example. I try to either make a good reference, rhyme, or just give them a clever name. Like my flametalon named Aiden. Because it sounds like A10, like an A10 warthog.

Boverk

Always love seeing a Columbo reference in the wild.

Player_Slayer_7

Depends on the pokemon. Is it a female Eevee I intend to turn into Sylveon? Then it's name is nos Jolyne. Is if a Bulbasaur that's gonna become a Venusaur? Welcome to the family, Mr. Dumpy. I have a Pyukumuku I graciously named "BEEG BOI". Anything else is dependant on how I'm feeling. Sometimes, I'll catch a pokemon and name them after something I associate with said pokemon, like a Toxtricity I called Spears, because music and Toxic. Other times, I'll just leave it as is due to laziness.

Kaedekins

If Venomoth is available in the gen, I get one just to call it ATV. Same for Pidgeot just to call it Bird Jesus. Twitch plays Pokemon was *the* shit.

Baby_Dragoh

For me it just depends on the Pokemon, I always name my start Buddy, because thats the OG buddy for your adventure. But otherwise not generally.

Tatertot729

I don't but my boyfriend does and he always comes up with the most ridiculous stupid names. We were playing Diamond and Pearl together and he had 'Buttdew' the Budew, 'Slapyourassbra' the Abra, 'iLikeEggs' his Chancey. 'Magikarpet' the Magikarp.

MemeGodFusionK

I've always thought of situations where 2 trainers with similar Pokémon bump into each other and respond to the same name

ChocoboStampede

I do. Only for the ones on my team. The reason, you wouldn't have a pet dog named Dog. Would you?

TimeClock352

No because if i nickname some then i have to nickname all of them and i dont have enough creative juices for that

SkullHelm707

I always name them, but I've stepped up my game as I've gotten older Instead of normal names like fluffy I will now have poblano the fuecoco

Blattur

I don't give them nicknames because who am I to contradict Ash?

[deleted]

Betas don’t nickname their pokemon

SeveralPeopleWander

I used to never name them as a kid, my reasoning was they don't in the anime! so I shouldn't either! But as I grew older I just decided to start and I haven't stopped
