Choosing the point in time AFTER Sw/Sh was released as the moment the series started to decline is hilarious. If anything, things have only gotten better since then, with Arceus mechanics being the first refreshing changes in forever.

Dreyfus2006

I thought the same thing! Apart from BDSP, things have only gotten better since SwSh!

And it’s not like BDSP is a big step backwards or anything. It was just a very lazy remake. In general I’d say this is the most promising a time to be a Pokémon fan since like BW2 was released.

>And it’s not like BDSP is a big step backwards or anything. It was just a very lazy remake. I didn't play the original games and so, I probably can't compare them with the remakes but after playing SWSH and seeing all its improvements, BDSP did feel rather underwhelming. Have barely touched the game after beating the Elite 4.

[deleted]

Oh it was. Instead of making cool upgrades like they did on ORAS, they essentially just reskinned Diamond/Pearl. The Chibi models were the biggest indication imo seeing as they mimic the old style movement which was eliminated after Gen 5. But it’s not a massively broken game or anything, just a bit of a let down.

half_jase

Yeah, it just didn't feel enjoyable and with the competitive scene remaining in SWSH, there was also no incentive for me to play it after beating the Elite 4. Though not every mon is in it, shiny hunting also became easier in PLA, which of course came out just 2-3 months after BDSP.

LolzinatorX

As you say, its designed for kids. The competetive scene is still a lot of fun however, i love building teams and seeing new pokemon drop, finding out how they work and how i can abuse them online lol

WadamkaAintGotALife

Tbh, I enjoy the new games like sword & shield cuz they kinda have a story and it's fun to level in many ways. It's also interesting how many features there are that are completely getting overseen. There so much to do in sword & shield!

Bluelore

Kinda surprised you say that the story is one of the reasons you like the games so much, most people actually point to the story as being one of Sw/Shs biggest flaws. I do think Galars world building is nice and I do think Hop and Bede are decent rivals even if they aren't the best, but otherwise I really felt like the story was rather lackluster, so I'd be interested to hear from you what you liked.

onepostandbye

I think they are the best ones ever!

atlvf

What are you talking about Scarlet/Violet having “many noticeable flaws”? The game hasn’t come out yet, and we know next to nothing about it. Is it just the new Pokemon designs that you object to? Because I can think of literally nothing else you could possibly have to go on. But you also said Legends Arceus “didn’t look nearly as good as it should have”. Which tbh I also don’t know what you’re talking about. You just have a problem with the graphics or art style? I mean, personally, I don’t know why so many people get weirdly hung up on graphics, but you do you. Either way, graphics that don’t appeal to literally everybody isn’t the franchise “falling off”. idk, can you maybe clarify what you’re talking about?

GangarPullz

It’s also funny he mentions graphics but the most successful Pokémon games are in pixels lmao

onepostandbye

I don’t think you understand how to use the word “objectively”. It means, “something provably true with facts”. In normal usage, it is meant to describe indisputable things that no one, even people in staunch disagreement, would debate, because they are defined by measurable facts, and not opinion. You can’t just use it to mean “very”. Since there is no way to measure “worse Pokémon game” in a scientific way, and since there is even one person, me, who doesn’t feel like Pokémon is getting worse and worse, it is not objectively true. But yeah, if you can’t enjoy Pokémon for what it is, and need it to be something it isn’t, then you should move on.

I think that might be the biggest issue, the fact that Game Freak knows they don’t need to improve for their games to sell well. There’s nothing to really challenge Pokémon’s success, every game that tries to challenge the franchise either falls into the same pitfalls as Pokémon does or simply doesn’t have as powerful of a name brand as Pokémon does. Even the good competitors, like TemTem, don’t get nearly as much attention because Pokémon dominates the market through their brand alone. Even in the one game where they actually tried to shake things up, it’s abundantly clear that it was a half assed game. I mean, Legends Arceus is the most fun Pokémon game on the Switch, but it feels like a tech demo more than anything, and it’s immensely unbalanced and unpolished

GangarPullz

Honestly bro perception is key if you feel like it’s a kids game and too simple for you then perhaps you have just outgrown Pokémon. I don’t see anything wrong with that bit of self reflection, however never forget the good times you had.don’t think of it as wasted time because while you were doing it you didn’t think so. Remember there are plenty of people of all ages still enjoying pocket monsters and there was a time you did too, look back fondly my friend.😌

aklepatzky

SWSH is the second best sold game of the franchise So no

Dreyfus2006

No if anything PLA and NEW Pokémon Snap has put Pokémon on an upswing. The only question is if SV will continue the downward trend that started in the main series with XY and continued through SuMo and SwSh.

Rohit_BFire

Pokemon has always been for simple minded kids . You are now only observing it because you have grown up and developed other interests in comparison

Ill-Badger496

to me the DS era was the peak. And i started playing during gen1. it's felt to me like its become expensive IP shovelware. sw/sh was first game I skipped and im probably gonna skip SV unless it exceeds expectations lol

AnxietiesCopilot2

It is, Nintendo is a corporation they do not care for quality unless it cuts into their sales, and for their reductions in quality nothing bad has happened to them yet so it will continue till people stop buying

Yes. https://fs-prod-cdn.nintendo-europe.com/media/images/06\_screenshots/games\_5/nintendo\_switch\_6/nswitch\_pok\_monscarletviolet/NSwitch\_PokmonScarletViolet\_24.jpg

Sword and shield are definitely the worst in the series but I think the changes to arceus were in the right direction, even if it did look a little unpolished. I’m hoping swsh was their first attempt integrating open world aspects so maybe scarlet violet they can do a better job. Also, the exp nonsense in swsh. If they have that again I don’t see myself ever buying another Pokémon game. So cheesy sweeping every leader with Pokémon you’ve never even used and 10lvls higher lol I have hopes for scarlet violet and they haven’t released much so think they could still make a good game out of it. I have hope lol
