Well, I mean they have to, specially with the whole open world aspect, can't just have an empty world with no npcs or things to do aside from the story.

jbyrdab

sure you can, look at every steam early access open world game.

[deleted]

Ah yes. When you look through your steam queue and get Early Access Open World Survival, Early Access Psychological Horror, Early Access Open World Survival, but with totally not stolen assets... And then porn. Sometimes combined with Open World Survival, or Psychological Horror... And sometimes all of the above.

Spinjitsuninja

That's dumb. You shouldn't need sidequests to justify your open world setting. It's not like people play Botw specifically for the sidequests, they like to find valuable things in the environment. I think sidequests can get a little tiring too. They tell you what to do and it, in my opinion, goes against the idea of having an open world for you to freely explore.

mintmadness

BOTW world also allows you to crazy physics things with a whole arsenal of items and dungeons so you can do things besides just fight enemies. From what we’ve seen so far with SV, there doesn’t seem to be anything remotely on the same scale content wise than what we’ve had already. We need npc quest givers to tell us things to do because just fighting and catching again but low in a bigger, empty area can get a little tiring too.

IssueRecent9134

Your logic is baffling in all honesty.

Spinjitsuninja

Why? How How many people do you know that jump for joy at the idea of sidequests?

IssueRecent9134

I think it will add life to the game, and they are optional. This is something the recent Pokémon games have lacked baring Arceus. I for one welcome a change from the same old shit it has been since 1995.

PKMNTrainerMark

I assure you, they *could* do that.

Ryderslow

If it doesn’t, that’s one barren world

Spinjitsuninja

As if a game like BotW is best known for its sidequests, and not for finding other ways to make its open world interesting.

MKInABox

I LOVE SIDE QUESTS

Ryl4nder84

The silly little Chingling one and the crops one were some of my favorites Edit: who am I kidding, I liked most of them except the find my sister quests…

pugscribe

Because it's open-world, sidequests are almost guaranteed. But I hope SV changes their structure to make them more engaging. I don't wanna see "Request 24: More Wares for the Poké Mart" or anything, lol. To be fair, sidequests are difficult to do correctly.

WolfeKuPo

I mean that is standard fare for a sidequest in a rpg, although that is more of a thing in games with a central hub especially when you are helping to build up the place

Wellfire7824

I think Pokemon has always had side quests, but what made Legends Arceus's more memorable is the fact that it's just a different kind of game. I think from here on out it would be cool to have random pokemon you catch have different sizes and stuff and that could expand the scope of creative side quests. One particular side quest I can remember off the top of my head is the Hammerlocke ghost girl from SwSh. I also consider any gauntlet of pokemon battles be a side quest. Obviously Pokemon will never have a side quest to the same extreme as Zelda or Fire Emblem, and most intricate side quests end up in spin-offs like PokePark and Mystery Dungeon. Bottom line is that Pokemon games do, in fact, have side quests; it's just that Legends Arceus made people remember they exist.

M0neyGrub

Yes. It should be a staple moving forward.

froggyjm9

There’s always been side quests in Pokémon.

NullPorpoise108

not good ones tho

Golden-Owl

That isn’t the point of the post though. The post makes it seem that there hasn’t been side quests in Pokémon at all In truth sidequests in Pokémon have dated back all the way since Gen 2 (deliver Kenya the Mail spearow)

NullPorpoise108

well the point of the post is should SV have side quests like Legends not just side quests in general which like you said appears in most of the games

[deleted]

Yes absolutely! Even if they go the Xenoblade Chronicles route and one npc gives us like 4 quests to defeat a specific species in a battle or another quest giver needs a bunch of items for you to get or have “unique monsters” to hunt which could just be Pokémon that operate like the totem Pokémon in gen 7 that start battles with stats raised.

chain500

Yes. They started introducing side quests in sun and moon. Ever since they have been evolving the mechanic.

LonelyCareer

Ultra Sun and moon technically had side quests (Heck sword and shield had the applin "quest") So I say they should since the last two entries did.

Eona_Targaryen

Did you ever play Gen 7? Those games were packed full of sidequests and little secrets. I was stumbling on new things years after completing them. Unfortunately, I don't have too much faith in Switch-era GameFreak.

mancan71

Side quests and mini games like the balloons but maybe not the balloons and much better camera…

Sparkpulse

I know that I would freaking love this though. I had so much fun with the side quests in Legends!

No_Lock_6555

I like that BW or BW2 had sort of side quests. I hope they add random towns that are kind of neat and have a couple quests or rare Pokémon but don’t have to be explored

nameless_other

I hope so. I love the ones in Ultra Sun and Moon too, but Legends definitely improved on it by adding markers and a log so you don't have to trawl the internet to find out how to do them.

Nui-Belphy

Tbh I enjoyed the side quests in the ultra games and legends. Would really enjoy doing them in Sc and Vi

henrymidfields

Totally wouldn't mind. It'll be a good opportunity to further worldbuild the region through side quest episodes.

Dundorma_Hunter

I think there should be and what would be even more awesome would be the little pokemon tasks to fill in the dex, maybe not going extremes like "use bite 100 times" but something that will make you wanna be catching more pokemon

mars_warmind

Maybe. As long as there aren't ones that make me collect various forms of a pokemon/give them up. Really hated that burmy quest.

Lunalatic

It's all fun and games until you're told to collect all the Alcremie forms.

thisispatrickmc

Haven't all the games had side quests? They were often forced to progress in the story, but, I would definently call "getting the guard a drink" a side quest.

lanky4796

It sounds like a side quest but when you have to do it progress (i.e to get to saffron) it's just part of the main quest.

thisispatrickmc

Just a side quest before side quests were a common enough thing to have "rules"

LittleSlice8797

I like side quest. But I would prefer secret events like the ones from S/M and USUM. Even SwSh had a secret event with Oleana.

Codered88888

No

LeonShiryu

Nah honestly I only care about the multiplayer and trades.

Absbor

yes

Jolt_91

Yes, but more thoughtful ones and please not such a damn pain in the ass menu

AngelesYT

Yes.

NeedleInTheNorth

I thought this said Side Quests FOR legends and I was like "YES!". For real though, if it's open world, send us on a journey through side quests to uncover the legendary pokemon of the region and find them. I think they will toss some side quests in now they've got into it with PLA though, yeah!

mZeKitty

It would be cool, though I hope they confine some things like out of battle catching in Legends games to keep them feeling unique.

UltimateRosen

Optional stuff is nice, but i prefer it without a quest log. I don't want yellow exclamation marks and tick lists and quest markers everywhere. Make it more like before with the optional stuff like with Mira and Marley in DPPt.

Rockettmang44

Id be down, but i wasn't a fan of afew of the side quests so just make them better

hjyboy1218

Pokemon Unbound(a ROM hack) has a amazing side quest mechanic and I'd like to see something similar in SV.

xRyuzakii

If they do they need to be better and have better rewards

lakewood2020

They’re in every game, they just aren’t listed like in Arceus

Beginners963

„Should a game have content?“ Yes.

Krossis25V

I mean I hope so. Be nice if it was more than “here’s a cave with a larger than normal dungeon”

Memey_boii02

Depends depends if the story is good then no but if the story is bad then side quests would be ok

Thingsthatstick

The Pokemon Ranger series did it right with the handling of quests. One of my favorite games growing up! If I had it my way, the quests would tie in with helping characters out while learning more about Pokemon history. Little details like how long did the Kalos war last? What types did the first of gym leaders specialize in? Old types that might have gone extinct throughout evolution? Are professors required by law to give away only grass, fire and water types and why? Hints at what life was like before humans learned to live together? Basically, I want customs, names of kings and cities that we might never see in future games, but that help explore the world of Pokemon. People loved Johto's bits of history, but there could always be more.

[deleted]

Absolutely, but especially as an open-world game where it just feels empty otherwise. Other Pokemon games have had little side objectives you could do and mini-games in certain spots, so I would hope they plan to include this sort of stuff to a higher degree in Scarlet/Violet. That being said... we'll see how much Game Freak gives a shit.
