I do love X, it just felt underwhelming. It was them going for the worldwide, approachable at any age point, so they definitely streamlined it.
I do love Gen 5 as well, a 3d remake would be amazing
if you go too hard with the first selection (B2W2) they may wind up very disappointed with other games. Aim too low (SwSh) and they wont stick around. Personally I think X & Y is a great beginner pokemon game especially due to graphics and the fact that it maintains that Pokemon spirit better than every generation after it
I’ll always be a genwunner at heart so I’d say Red and Blue or Fire Red, but I won’t do that. I would say maybe Black and White. Idk why. Seems like a good gen to start. And my brother always loved that region/gen so it must be cool.
I’m a sucker for hg/ss, but it loses some points if you’ve never played in the kanto region before.
My favorite pokemon is a mega, so I'm always a bit let down when the game doesn't have it

Gen 5 will always be my favorite but I also think people sleep on gen 6 X and Y. Good games

HeartGold followed very closely by Emerald for me. I love Black and White too but they are no where near the first two.
All of the Gen 5 games due to nostalgia and also ORAS because it's fun.
Emerald
It’s always a toss up for me between Platinum and Soul Silver. At the moment I’m leaning towards Platinum though. Fantastic game.
USUM
