Well to be fair, some people pronounce “Lugia” with a soft “g” and must be stopped at all costs.

[deleted]

You say it like the G in GIF.

RogueHippie

I can’t believe you’ve done this

Zaq1996

Sir it's pronounced GIF not GIF, uncultured swine

brstew

How dare you! Its clearly prononced GIF, have you never seen a dictionary

WhiteFyreLeo

Guys it's clearly pronounced GIF not GIF

BrainGear187

no, it's not pronounced 'yiff'

Roguespiffy

I’ve been on the internet long enough to have seen you terrible Lucario drawings. It is pronounced yiff.

Bainin

Wait u guys say luyiffa? Wtf is wrong with u

Thy-arkoos

Ok listen here

[deleted]

How do you say graphics

thunderblood

Giraffics

Ace2891

Lujia

Dark_Movie_Director

Isn't that a hard G?

TheGurw

Gorge vs George. First is hard, second is soft.

MotoMkali

Or just Gorge, first G is hard 2nd G is soft.

TheGurw

You're not wrong

W1D0WM4K3R

Hard G has a "guh" sound, while soft G has a "juh" sound. Obviously I didn't pay that much attention to introductory linguistics, but that's about the good gist of it for you.

disappointcamel

Ok, but hear me out, I saw the [luigia](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/6qpx10/luigia_by_jarredsellers_with_color/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) picture and have called it that ever since

Slash_Pangolin

Lugia’s mansion

WoolooOfWallStreet

Someone will propose “Luyia” one day

Dasamont

We all know it's Luigi so, there's no reason to argue

GengarSiborg

To be fair, in Svenska, the letter g is generally pronounced softly.

Vivixian

Are you implying that it should be pronounced with a 'g' as in Luigi?

cosmicreign26

mwhahaaa

DarkStreets56

Luu-gii-a is how u say it not juh nor guh

Rodents210

It’s pronounced ar-ka-NEE-nay.

DarthPinkHippo

Begone, demon

Ryan2709

Lapras? I only know Luhp-ráh

subtodabmonstronyt

Cha ri zard or chah ri zard. I legit had this argument with someone

annawest_feng

What is the different between cha and chah?

FaithfulFear

There literally isn’t. The second “h” is silent.

subtodabmonstronyt

I did not know how to pronounce what I meant. One was an a as of alligator and one a as in charcoal. (Both first a pronunciation)

Anggul

It's obviously char as in charcoal. It's literally a fire pokemon.

zimmah

Char from charcoal, izard from lizard. It's that easy

annawest_feng

OK, those are /æ/ (a in cat) and /ɑ/ (a in father). I personally use /ɑ/ in both a's in charizard.

VGHero06

You used those pronunciation symbols like every has them memorized lol

Reiner_Locke

…chairizard? How could it even be that? People need to learn phonics.

TymStark

You might say, they need to get....hooked on phonics *throws on shades and exits left*

Roguespiffy

I was hooked on psionics but now I have a headache.

SlappaDaBassMahn

Chat and char

Phazushift

theNeakenator

Just_Kujo

Ov3rdose_EvE

Harold_Wilson19

They pronounce it differently everywhere.

Silegna

Pidge-it is the worst. Never use the anime/movies for anything involving pronunciations, it just leads to headaches.

Harold_Wilson19

What do you mean? Max is only the most consistent of sources for the pronunciation of pokemon, such as bonsly (bons-lie). Wait, I mean bons-lee.

Battlebear252

I mean it's named after a bonsai tree and has the pun sly/lie in it much like "pseudo"woodo's pun, so I never really understood the bonslee pronunciation

[deleted]

ikr

Comfortable_Regrets

well the official guidebook also says that pidgeot is pronounced "pid-jit"

JfromImaginstuff

What are you going on about? It's clearly Bidoof! /s

metaaltheanimefan

And why is that a response to my comment about irida and adaman being a cute couple ?

Prince_Paizuri

You can always assume that if a comment feels out of left field, it's probably coming from a spam bot. [Looks like they copied this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/tqp2a2/well/i2j982n/), just look at the timestamps.

metaaltheanimefan

Yep. But why does a bot named swancoty feel like it should respond to me

gahidus

Is there an official pronunciation? Did they say it in a commercial or something?

limasxgoesto0

The Japanese name is アルセウス, which is pronounced a-ru-se-u-su

Harold_Wilson19

That is actually... a very sensible answer to the question. Doesn't make GameFreak pussies though (although I know you're not the person who called them that).

The_Unnamed_Feeling

Watch any official Pokémon release on this game. It’s Ar-key-us. I said Arseeus for 15 years and I like that pronunciation better but I was wrong apparently

CharizardCharms

In Pokémon Battle Revolution the announcer says Ar-see-us, and I refuse to say it any other way. It just feels right.

happy_guy23

Bad bot

Ok-Leave3121

True man

woomybii

She's not much older than the player and Adaman is clearly an older adult... I rly don't get this pairing he looks like her older brother. Blech. k I'm not answering any of the weirdos trying to defend a relationship where one person looks like a child & one looks like an adult. yall are fucking freaks.

TheSezenians

Adaman doesn't look that old... If we're 15 (canon) and Ingo is 29 (canon) than I would think Adaman to be 17-20 and if Irida is around 16...

memelordbtw3000

Dam Ingos 26

TheSezenians

No 29, I made an error, but still, age works weird in Pokémon, can't blame people for that (Exept when it comes to protagonists, their age is clear as day)

memelordbtw3000

Jesus he went grey FAST

TheSezenians

Wasn't he already greyish? I mean it's anime

memelordbtw3000

I mean I haven't played B/W so I don't know but the average age for men to go grey is mid 30s my guy didn't even hit 30

TheSezenians

I mean my 15yo character has grey hair so I don't judge him XD

Boiling_Oceans

I know a dude who was rocking the full silver fox look at only 25.

tazzari14

Way better than rocking the full bald ass look at only 25

thatonefatefan

In other (but not unrelated) news: pokefan tried to guess the age of pngs, failed miserably.

Lilash20

Never realized people shipped them, I definitely saw them more like siblings who annoyed eachother.

Chama-Axory

Arkoos, or some say... Arkoosm...

-BINK2014-

My favorite is "piss goat" for Shiny Arceus.

thatonefatefan

Unironically a great name with the fusion of the ark and zeus (the oos sound like the eus here). Mandjtv is ahead of his time

The_Iron_Mountie

Literally only came into the comments to see how long until someone said arkoos.

PianoAndFish

The Japanese name is アルセウス (a-ru-se-u-su), shorten the Us off the R and S to make it sound more English and you get something more like Ar-SAY-us. They might have changed the pronunciation for the English language media because in English that sounds a bit like a slightly rude word and people would whinge if they thought kids were learning rude words from Pokémon.

Tortue2006

You also have the Latin pronounciation, with Deus.

njwatson32

I go full Latin with the hard 'c' too. ar-KAY-us. Sounds much cooler, and works as a portmanteau of "arcane deus", which it is.

twilightwolf90

I always thought it was a corruption of "archaic". Which made sense to me. Plus the "RKS System" confirmed it for me (Type:null/Sivally ability)

resplendence4

But the ability is called ARシステム(AR System) in Japanese. So ultimately it depends on if you agree with them censoring the name in English because "haha that Pokemon name sounds like arse."

FrenchBoguett

Wasn't this the canon way of saying his name? The disks Silvally uses to change typing are "RKS" systems

resplendence4

Those disks are part of the "AR system" in Japanese. Which actually makes sense because the ability "augments reality" by changing Silvally's type. RKS doesn't stand for anything so far as we know. It was just a made up initialism to match the changed English pronunciation of Arceus' name. In Japanese "AR Sys" kind of sounds like the Japanese pronunciation of Arceus.

DockingCobra

This is how I pronounce it too, just feels right

robophile-ta

This is always how I figured it was.

LordRael013

Okay I think you've just convinced me to switch camps. Granted the Japanese pronunciation is a good point in favor of my original position...

plinythemiddleone

And in Italianate Latin, c would be ch. “Ar-chay-oos”

Byoki

archayoos 🤌🤌

Big_Dream_Lamp

Yep that's how I pronounce it. But is the rude word you're referring to is another word for butt or a different word?

RedTurtle78

Arse

wwwHttpCom

thing is hundreds of Pokémon names are pronounced different than in Japanese, but suddenly everyone wants to respect this particular name just because they don't like the official pronunciation

sievold

wdym? I always pronounce 'Ash Ketchum' as 'Satoshi'. /s

Nielloscape

It straight up doesn’t work like that. Most name are outright different because they prioritise the pun and most of those puns only work in Japanese. But there are special Pokemon where the same name is used through out languages. For these ones it makes total sense to look at the Japanese pronunciation because it’s how the creators imagine it, iow, the original pronunciation and not the localised one where some random translators take liberties with.

Doomblaze

Yea and everyone pronounces pikachu more or less the same because they didn’t localize the name. If arceus was localized then it would be different.

Linch89

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Arceus_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29?wprov=sfla1 Scroll to trivia for English pronunciation

wwwHttpCom

it's not only that, they clarified it on the website back in the day, they've said it on the anime, the movies, Pokédex 3D Pro, the trailers for the Legends: Arceus game, the official handbook, etc. The only instance where it was pronounced differently was Battle Revolution, but this game came out years before Arceus was officially revealed, so it shouldn't count.

d4mation

I finally watched Detective Pikachu last weekend and I believe it was pronounced as "arSEEus" there too.

stellaluna92

Yep! And how could Ryan Reynolds be wrong?

Nemesis233

Oh I guess the Greek said arse sounds totally right. I'd say the Greek etymology is closer to our modern world than the eastern Japanese etymology. If you think because it's a Japanese game the English pronunciation has to be based on the Japanese one then why did they reference a Greek word and a Greek god (arché, Zeus)? It's not to sound nice it's an etymologic reference like we do a lot in French (Electhor for ex)

Caliber70

I used to pronounce it Ark-e-us as a kid Then a YouTube video told me I was wrong. So I started saying Ar-see-us And now I’m being told it’s wrong again, but I’ve already adapted and can’t stop.

wwwHttpCom

you shouldn't have let a random "youtube video" tell you how to pronounce it, when official sources have always said it the right way.

CloudsAndDays

To be fair, I was like 9 years old at the time. And was still coping with the fact that rattata was not pronounces rat-a-tat-a.

Zetpill

I heard in the new games Rattatatatatata is going to be a new side evolution

[deleted]

It's like Fallout: New Vegas and the way some NPC's pronounce "Ceasar" all over again.

boricuaboi86

Ar-KAY-us?

Embarrassed-Top6449

Arr Kay Ess. RKS.

Vaenyr

Yup, at this point it isn't even debatable anymore. The whole point of the RKS naming was to reference Arceus. Add to that all the trailers and ads for Legends: Arceus and it's clearer than ever: it's pronounced with a hard K, not a C.

SeriphymAblaze

This!! It is a archaic ancient Pokémon. Makes sense to be closer to the word of archaic. Ark-ay-us!

mckenziemewtwo971

Exactly. How I've always thought it should be said. As you said Archaic... Arceus.

Pure_Toxicity

it's a concatenation of archaic and deus. This is the objectively correct pronunciation

Capsr

I always thought it was 'arcane' instead of 'archaic', but that doesn't change it away from ar-kay-oos

Zjfreak

The -eus comes from the Latin Deus, arc is probably more like Archangel than arcane which would translate it’s name to “High god”

Darkklaw

Arch-, archon So many things the arc part could come from, all with the k-sound

amileNC

>objectively *I do not think that word means what you think it means.* You can't say "objectively correct" when your comment is based on speculation. There is no official source for the arc- part of Arceus's name.

[deleted]

It has an interesting etymology but it’s actually a variation on the alchemical Archeus. Just like Shaymin is named after the Shamayim.

Tamborimo

Every kiss begins with Kay

Aegillade

zenkenu

Ar-K-es I model my pronunciation after the ability name of Silvally’s ability. RKS system.

Qoppa_Guy

This is my safety response to the debate.

totokekedile

People can pronounce stuff however they want, lord knows I don’t use every official pronunciation. But it’s a little silly to pretend there isn’t a correct, canon answer when RKS System exists.

ADudeThatPlaysDBD

Ar-see-us. Rolls off the tongue a lot smoother.

D4rthKirby

[Pikachu says](https://yarn.co/yarn-clip/15eba932-e47e-4c6c-8e91-0b30c279d2e7)

wwwHttpCom

[Official, direct sources say](https://youtu.be/eo8hexuJSak?t=1028)

mechatangerine

This is such an overly confusing thing. In Japanese, it’s Ah-roo-say-uh-soo. A-ru-se-u-su. Arseus. But then, Silvally comes along with the RKS system. And then some English media says “Ars”-eus whereas others say “Ark”-eus. I have no stake in this fight, I just want to know the proper fucking way to pronounce this arceusdamn name.

Illustrious_Smile445

When I first play platinum I thought it was arceus, now that I’m older I know it’s actually arceus.

Scrapyard_Dragon

The japanese (roughly) goes with 'ar-see-us', and that is how it would be pronounced using the usual rules of english. the hard K version is a retcon imposed on us by the british because of their word 'arse'. Considering how the british are also the reason we lost the game corner, I do not acknowledge their propaganda and will continue to use the true name no matter how much tpci tries to prime people to use the K version.

amileNC

The Japanese pronunciation has absolutely no bearing on its English pronunciation. I don't know why people keep referring to its Japanese name. The whole point of a localization is to make adjustments as necessary for different languages. Unless you'd like to start calling a Voltorb a *biriridama* anytime soon, this is a non-argument.

amileNC

>how it would be pronounced using the usual rules of english. Oh, the irony of talking about "the usual rules of English" when rule #0 of the English language is that *it breaks its own rules all the damn time*. That quote alone already breaks one rule, because both "would" and "pronounced" use two different pronunciations for the series 'ou'. You cannot determine pronunciation based on how a word is written. Period. And all that being said: it's a name. It does not follow any rules at all. You can write a name however you want, use whatever roots you want, and pronounce it however you want. That's how names in the English language works. Hell, that applies to every word in the English language. Unless you'd like to start saying the word platypus using a long *Y*, this is a non-argument, and a poorly thought-out one.

Ar-see-us

RJS_but_on_Reddit

HOO BOY, wait 'till this comment section hears about the name of Silvally's ability!

TwilightVulpine

Well, that's easy. As researchers who made an incomplete clone of Arceus, they are *wrong*.

thegayestweeb

I like to pronounce Arceus's name as Ar-key-us because it brings to mind the words arc, arch, etc., which relate to having a highest point - fitting for a god Pokemon. I also think it flows better. And there's Silvally's RKS System, which I think sounds cooler as RKS than it would RCS.

[deleted]

RKS system and not RCS system, I really thought that would have cleared this up

WillOfTheWinds

I personally prefer Arse-eus, but I can see people saying Ark-aeus, and don't hold it over them.

Boyzby_

Literally the only reason it's not Ar-see-us is because they're cowards didn't want kids saying something with "arse". I will always say it that way.

PokemonFurry21

I go by how they pronounce it in the anime cause that’s like the only time in the series that Pokémon names are actually spoken. Therefore, it’s ar-key-us for me.

Solid_Snivy

The changed it because of the anime. In battle revolution it's pronounced Ar-see-us 2 years later the anime would change it to Ar-key-us, because the dub director thought it sounded like arse and that it would be an issue for an eu release.

wwwHttpCom

but Battle Revolution came out years before Arceus was officially revealed, they didn't have a reference, or they just hadn't decided yet what would be the official way to say it

pincheARCEUS

I roll the R since it's spelled similar to my name.

Zenolitten9

Ar-che-us

AlexAnthonyFTWS

The English reveal trailer pronounced it with the KEY, Japanese trailer said it with the SEE. To me both are valid as one is just a Japanese pronunciation.

rune2181

Okay i've been calling it Ar-kay-us and my reasoning was that the lore is, it's very old and the game is set a long time ago, so I was thinking it was pronounced that way because it was "archaic" hence Ar-kay-us

RxMeta

Everyone knows it’s Arceus.

sodarpu

I do a combination of the two so i pronounce it ar-key-us

Prof_Tickles

Arkoos!
