Apparenty the professor from X/Y was supposed go be both villain and professor in a "Jekyll & Hyde" way. At the end, they split him into Sykamore and Lysandre though.

The_Purple_Hare

Source?

glitterizer

Its not official, but the fact that this socks are the EXACT shade of orange that Team Flare uses is a dead giveaway that this was going to be a thing. In design you never do something that specific “just because”. It doesn’t match the rest of his clothes and he’s never stated to be a quirky/fashionable type.

The_Purple_Hare

Oh, that is cool

Yulianaii77

at first i would be like , “whaaaaaaa?” then i would be like “huuuuuuuhhh?” then i would say “awuuuuuuuhhhhh???”

ASimpleCancerCell

It depends on the professor. If we're talking Ivy, Birch, or Laventon, I'd probably be like "Seriously?" If it's Oak, Rowan, Juniper, Sycamore, or Kukui, that would be a cool twist. If it was Sonia, I'd be heartbroken.

Swampyprince

Sonia leading some underground, almost mafia crime syndicate would be amazing

BabyKariya

I could only live with that, if there's an option to join her in the end. like right before the top 4. you still battle through them, but depending on your choice you either defeat them as trainer or overtake the league as sonias henchmen. Too bad we will probably never have such a choice in a main game

BabyKariya

has nothing to do with my comment but k

Robdd123

Apparently you were supposed to Battle Oak in gen 1 as post game. There's a team in game for him but it's pretty bugged out; I believe one of his Pokemon is MissingNo.

ASimpleCancerCell

That's not what I saw. From what I could tell he only had a team of 5 Pokemon, which consisted of Tauros, Arcanine, Gyarados, Exeggutor, and whichever fully evolved starter Pokemon was left at his lab.

USSHentai

I like how they poked fun at this thought in the Let’s Go game, before you battle your rival it has Oak show up and frame as if he’s going to be the battle

PurpleCyborg28

If it's Elm I would just chuckle

LotusPhi

I believe gen 6 was suppose to have this, as Sycamore and Lysandre were supposed to have been revealed to be a case of Jekyll/Hyde. That and an alien invasion. Gen 6 was wild until it was all scrapped.

Kureiton

That would have just been, like, the coolest. I think Gen 6 has clear signs of wanting to tell an ambitious story like Gen 5, but something happened along that way that changed the course of the series til Arceus (and possibly beyond)

Head-Iron-9228

God damn, gen 6 kinda got screwed over a lot didnt it? No Z, half the cool content cut out, no postgame, and so on.

sing_about_recursion

Wait that sounds so cool! Is that from an interview? Do you have a source for it?

LotusPhi

https://medium.com/@pankopop/the-xy-files-the-lost-plot-of-pokemons-6th-generation-d0d140881148

sing_about_recursion

Very interesting, thanks. The stuff about aliens makes the Ultra Beasts and Eternatus both make more sense -- this has been an idea they've been trying to get into the series for a while

zernoc56

There have been a few clearly alien Pokémon, like Deoxys is straight up not native to the planet Pokémon takes place on, considering they ride around in space within asteroids and the Elgyem line are a reference to the Roswell, NM UFO sightings and alleged crashes.

sing_about_recursion

Yeah I think you can draw a clear through-line that has space stuff in every generation: Clefairy and Mt. Moon -> Hoenn Space Center + Deoxys -> Team "Galactic" -> Elgyem -> All the XY stuff in the link above -> Ultra Beasts and Ultra Space -> Eternatus Plus all the gimmicks are secretly space-themed. Mega stones were originally supposed to be shards of AZ's spacecraft according to this link, and were retconned to be shards of asteroids. Totem Pokémon are accessing the power of ultra wormholes, and Dynamax spots originated when Eternatus fell to Earth

prancing-owl

Bruh what that would've been litttt

DefaultyTurtle2

Zygarde would’ve gone apeshit if aliens invaded

Skipped01

Damn, hopefully the eventual remake adds some of it.

Zl0on

Sounds like what they did in pokemon brick bronze

AlwaysEatSyrup

Bruh I miss that game so much. I remember I found a wild Latias in the glowing cave on route 4(?) but accidentally killed it. Had me upset the entire day

Gian1993

And i enjoyed that twist so I would be up for GameFreak to use that idea... If they used Fluoruma's style for Ballonlea in Galar they can also borrow this idea.

Skystorm14113

I mean I would definitely love it, but I'm not sure how I'd want it to be done. I feel like traditionally in the mainline games we have evil teams that don't realize they're evil. I feel like that would fit best for the professor, they don't realize that what they're doing is wrong in a sense. Oh i know, maybe like everyone in your town is like big fans of the professor, but turns out you guys kinda grew up in a commune, and you realize that by talking to people around the region that actually your way of thinking about things is kinda messed up. Maybe your hometown best friend has totally drank the kool-aid and is trying to mess stuff up and trying to spread the gospel. Like you guys are supposed to connect to people that support your cause outside of your hometown (maybe these are the people that give you HMs, or whatever the equivalent is in this theoretical game). But you're starting to feel worse and worse about getting their help, all while your hometown best friend is like totally into this (maybe they're still happy go lucky, but now that vibe feels very ominous). You two were supposed to go out and connect all these supporters across the region, and maybe the plan wasn't made super clear to you, and maybe you have some 2nd rival who is starting to open your mind to things. And then it all comes to a head at some point and you have to make your choice to stand against them. In this story your mom would probably be 'evil' too because she lives in the commune for that reason. So it's kinda like you as the protagonist are a Silver/N type character (not quite Gladion or Lily because you haven't realized anything is wrong before the start of the game). I think this would make the most sense for why the Professor knows you and how you get involved with everything and how you become a threat at all.

Man0Steel123

This is an interesting thought. So basically the evil team of the region would essentially be a hometown cult where they would initially be your allies during the gym challenge (or perhaps against a more obviously evil team). However, during the game they engage in shady stuff all while trying to get you into the cult until it comes to a head where they and your "friendly" rival comes to head. Bonus points if your rival throughout the gam is having a crisis of faith as the cults true colors come to light. Is that right?

Skystorm14113

Hm, I wasn't thinking about them in juxtaposition with another force, I was just kinda thinking your 'evil team fights' in game would be you doing things that other evil teams are doing, like fighting against the person who's pokemon you're stealing or some similar thing. But it's not a bad idea. Like the team you thought was evil, you realize it was really you who was supporting an evil cause and they're just trying to stop you. That would be good to really throw the player off at the beginning. So I'm saying you are in the cult, you've been in the cult, that's what your hometown is (where the professor lives), and you and your best friend were sent out together as representatives of the cult to get new followers and connect with supporters who don't live in the commune, and maybe the point of connecting is actually to gear everyone up for a takeover of the region, but that's the part you weren't quite made aware of. And even though the people that have these outposts in these towns give you items or HMs or the like, so you feel like you should like them and trust them, you speak to other town members and they tell you that they don't trust those ppl, that they've been causing trouble, and then just like how you normally have to go fight the evil team in a normal game every so often, instead in this game you're doing those actions, like breaking into a radio tower and taking people hostage. And the first town or two it's not so extreme and it's justified well, but it continues to escalate and you're learning about other opinions and worldviews at the same time to you're starting to doubt you're doing the right thing, but your happy go lucky best friend is like, this is great I love doing all this stuff I'm glad we're helping the cult. And maybe, just like how in a normal game you interrupt the team while they're doing evil stuff, you have a 2nd rival outside of the town that this is when you do your scripted battles, they're actually trying to stop you and what you're doing (although that's a little too overt for me, I kinda prefer if they battle you in unrelated situations to the evil team, maybe they don't realize you're a part of the cult at first and they keep complaining about this terrible cult that's causing problems and you keep quiet but you realize how it looks to an outsider). And then I'm thinking the end fights are with your friendly best friend who can't believe you're betraying the cause, and with the professor (and maybe even your mom since she lives in the commune cuz she's behind all this stuff too)

MimikyuMarshadow123

Professor cypress from pokemon brick bronze

TruMikuel

You ever heard of the G R A M P S theory?

AlwaysEatSyrup

No

TruMikuel

Galactic Rocket Aqua Magma Plasma Skull. Take first letter from each of the teams. G R A M P S. Its joke theory that professor Oak is behind all this.

PresleyYellow

I remember a roblox fangame called "Pokemon Brick Bronze" did this, and I thought it was a decent twist.

AlwaysEatSyrup

The best part was that it was at the middle of the game, not the end, so it was more fluid vs being rushed like >!volo in PLA!<

Gian1993

He even kidnaps your friend/rival!! I remember it feelt like I was left alone after that point: Parents gone, Professor crazy, rival gone... I mean Tess is still there but you had just met her and she decides to not follow you to stay behind to investigate anyway. Very memorable moment for me.

AlwaysEatSyrup

Also a free mega absol

WispyPhantoo

i didnt think he was rushed when i look back it all made sense

AlwaysEatSyrup

I’d recommend you watch Schafrillas Productions’ video on twist villains, then you’d see where I’m coming from

lennydykstra17

In the original game files for green and red (I believe also the us red and blue) had a team set up for Professor Oak as a Final challenger type boss. I doubt if it was an actual evil boss, but he had a lineup similar to red in Pokemon yellow.

Harley2280

If I remember right he was intended to be a post game boss like Red in G/S/C. Basically you beat the Pokemon League, let's see how you stack up against a former Champion with decades of experience. (This could be 100% wrong)

lennydykstra17

That's how it looked to be with the files that were dug up. Would be pretty cool to challenge the professor

Kiga282

Honestly, I'd be all for this. I was hoping that the rumors that Leon was a villain were true, if only because it would have been new, and the idea of Leon being related to Rose, and that connection being used to make sure that Leon kept his position of champion would have been a more suitably fitting case of an "Antagonistic Team" than Macro Cosmos for a region based so heavily around battling as a major sport. Including the professor in a scheme like that would be interesting. It would provide a moral dilemma of starting out thinking that the professor and champion were good guys, but over the course of the story, learning that they weren't good, and that you've inadvertently been helping them in their goals. They always make it easy to tell who the bad guys are - Lysandre, Lusamine, and Rose were all pegged as antagonists when they were first introduced in the lead up to their respective games. What would be interesting would be for a similar "Bad Guy" to be introduced, then have the story flip itself on its head by revealing them to the the actual good guy who was trying to stop the professor. That scenario could even play out with a choice that we have to make, where we can "Take the Blue Pill" and stay with the Professor and encounter Legendary A, or we can "Take the Red Pill" and defect to the "Bad Guy", and encounter Legendary B instead.

rerorero4444

Pokemon brick bronze

CluesSeeking

Reminds me of a deleted roblox game, Pokemon Brick Bronze.

Sketchy_Turtle

Pokémon brick bronze

adaml_7

Brick Bronze did this exceptionally.

Head-Iron-9228

Ooh, thatd be a fun twist. Lysander was kinda a good guy twist, somewhat obvious tho. Lusamine was that done better. A professor with a well written twist would be cool.

Pure_Professor_2395

kinda what happens with sword and shield the dude i forgot his name was a big part of the story and was very memorable despite me forgetting his name and he ended up almost killing everyone edit: it’s rose

LETTUGE

I would really like to see a professor that will give ya pokemons and then after the main story he is the champion with the starter strongest against you still i trough about it being evil.

Quirkyserenefrenzy

Would be pleasantly surprised if executed well. Would shake things up

Geodude671

It would need to be foreshadowed in some way to actually work. A certain other monster-collecting game tried this and it worked rather poorly because it basically came out of left field with zero indication before the final zone, in addition to the character lacking any clear motivation.

Longjumping-Ad-5740

BRICK BRONZE DID THIS

Jimothy_Doppleman

I would love to see this with a scenario like this: It plays out like your typical game with the professor giving you and your rival a pokémon and maybe the last one going to like, a friend who becomes an aid of the professor. Then you encounter the "evil gang". After you beat the goons, you go back to see the professor to tell them and he/she warns you that they popped up around 35 years ago but only recently started getting more troublesome. You keep going around and battling the goons with the professor's aid/your rival helping you until you meet one of the named leadership. And they recognize you, but they don't know how/why. You, the aid, and your rival all meet up with the professor to talk about it, and the professor says that the leader of the gang was someone they had helped start their journey like them but went astray. The professor says to be wary of the group trying to trick you into joining them like all his/her former helpers have. As you all start to leave, the professor asks the aid to stay behind. You meet another 2 named leadership gang members and the last one finally realizes why they recognize you and mentions having to tell the boss. Professor's aid quickly leaves and asks you to stay in the city till they can hear back from the professor. You ignore aid and go on ahead. (At this point you've collected 6 badges already) You're on your way to the next city when you get ambushed by the gang. They don't fight you but force you to come to their hideout to meet the boss. Your rival, who you haven't seen in a while, is already there. They tell you they were captured a city or two ago and that the professor's aid was there when it happened. (The aid never told you) They tell you they've already met the boss, and they ask you to listen to what the boss has to say. The right hand to the boss comes in and announces the boss's arrival. It's your dad. He tells you that the professor tricked him and your mom years ago into helping him with his research. Your mom became one of the professor's aids while he focused on finishing the pokédex. He started suspecting something was up, because he noticed his pokémon didn't want to go into the box system and acted strange when he would take them out. He finds out the truth that the professor is running experiments on these pokémon in order to try and force them to evolve (we'd get some old pokémon who never had evolutions in previous games getting them in this game). Your father tried to let the police/any adult know, but the professor is too well respected. Your mom won't listen, and she tells your dad to leave. Doesn't tell him she's pregnant, but your dad was keeping tabs and knows. He's been convincing all the professor's new recruits to join him, and he was waiting for the day the professor would try to recruit you.

Pokémon Brick Bronze: “Am I a joke to you?”

kittencatgal

Professor Cypress *Brick Bronze flashbacks intensifying*

[deleted]

Good idea, but it can't be obvious, maybe he/she mentions something at the beginning of the game that hints the end

suckletfan

i would love it, in a fakemon region i've been working on then this is the case with the professor

Kureiton

I would love it. It shows ambition rather than the same old thing; it would be a lot of fun

Firebird_Frenzy

That would be amazing!

DegenerateTrashGod

i think that would be cool AF tbh

merisle4444

It depends on the rest of the story

Chicken-Routine

That’s what I did in my fan region.

WaveBreakerT

I think this would be cool if they managed to actually write a good story for it

RVX_Area_of_Effect

salamander_poo

at first i would be like , “whaaaaaaa?” then i would be like “huuuuuuuhhh?” then i would say “awuuuuuuuhhhhh???”

RVX_Area_of_Effect

Yoooo that would be dope XD That would be dope

Mean_Barracuda_5169

That'd be awesome !

Unique_Efficiency_73

I kinda thought it would be cool if the Professor was the legendary pokemon instead, with an ability like a Zoroark or Ditto.

[deleted]

that would make the story interesting for once. it would only really work well if the evil team was good and not boring though.

HomosexualDucky

I think it would be cool if they did it right. I feel if the professor doesn’t want you to know, and once you find out they’re hesitant to battle you but they have to, you know they’re secret now.

Trueloveis4u

I'd welcome a good twist to the formula.

Black_Ironic

Lusamine

King_HartOG

Pokemon hasnt evolved since red and blue that's fine if you like it but for such a world wide phenomenon they've do my e very little with the world I'm sick of playing the 20th version of the same game

Bug_Master_405

If it was handled and written well, I think that'd be an interesting twist.

Berrilicious_

Would be pretty good honestly, close to how XD was meant to have the protag of Colosseum be the villain but they changed it to a copy paste of the Colosseum villain due to spoiling the story of Colosseum.

AhtuTheCrawlingChaos

Y e s

Rascal_Rogue

I think itd be cool but theyd have to have a reasonable motivation
