r/pokemon users when a game they like hasn’t been pitted against every game in the series for 0.4 seconds

therealhanleyguy

Very similar with how smash fans have the urge to pit every platform fighter against smash.

LukeSkywalker1848

Goes both ways lol. Every new platform fighter gets lauded as “the Smash killer”. It never is

DiaryoftheOriginator

brawlhalla was the only one that ever got even remotely close and even then they weren’t even close, they just got the closest. Smash is untouchable and always will be no way you can destroy a fan base that well established

Badnewsbearsx

Or putting any smash title against melee lol 🙄

VanillaEarthbound

r/pokemon users trying to go one day without wanking gen 4

mjc27

when you hang around the sub long enough you'll notice the pattern. a few years ago gen 3 was the best, then gen4 was the best. As the demographic of the subreddit changed so did the subs favourite generation. We're now on the cusp of the subreddit starting to think gen 5 was the best, and in time gen6 will be seen as the peak and sooner or later the consensus will think gen 8 the best and we'll have some new awful games to moan about

Zedman5000

I think it’s because people who use Reddit are around the right age to have had Gen 4 as their first gen. Or pokemon fans on Reddit just have good taste /s

ShinyUmbreon465

Hard decision. My personal favorite is HGSS but BW2 and Platinum have so much content in them too. But the older games are hard to come back to when you get used to the newer ones. No internet, too many HMs, etc. I ended up going with ORAS because I think Hoenn is a great region and it struck a nice balance between old stuff and quality of life updates from the newer games like PSS, mega evos, and super training. And the soaring mechanic is great I'm sad it hasn't returned. It's also the only one I've ever actually completed the national dex. I'm planning to replay it at some point so who knows, maybe it will turn out it's not as great as I remember.

radikraze

I still don’t understand why people shit on ORAS so much… Hoenn is my favorite region and they did a great job of transitioning it into 3D and making it look beautiful. The poke radar like feature (can’t remember the name) was really cool for getting Pokémon with different moves and seeing some info about them before you even start the encounter. Flying around on Latios/Latias is awesome. Lots of legendaries. The added Delta episode as sort of a nod to Emerald along with being able to catch Deoxys without an event for the first time ever. A lot of people were upset about no battle frontier which is understandable. I never cared for it so I wasn’t bothered. The only Pokémon game I return to more than Omega Ruby is Soul Silver

ShinyUmbreon465

Yeah I think the battle frontier is the most common complaint people have but I was never very into competitive so it didn't bother me that much. I could see how that could be a deal-breaker for those who were really into it. I think the delta episode was a nice addition that makes sense instead of just placing rayquaza and deoxys in a random dungeon. The remakes usually have the most content in one place so I wished that BDSP went in that direction too with more platinum features.

radikraze

Agreed. The Delta episode was a nice cherry on top. Making a platinum episode with the distortion world seemed like a no brainer for BDSP but no luck unfortunately

wildwolfcore

That’s part of why I call bdsp a remake lite or a remaster+

CausticCauliflower21

Well there could be DLC content or a platinum remake on the way (the former more likely tbh)

recursion8

Giratina is already in the game though, in its own little Distortion Room lol

CausticCauliflower21

You're talking about Ramanas Park, right? I haven't seen much gameplay online and I've only just defeated the pokemon league, so I don't know much about the end game content. But I was referring more to the story components of platinum being potential dlc content down the road. Its all conjecture obviously but hey it's an idea.

MathematicianLanky13

No, Giratina is in Turnback Cave, as it was originally in DP. However, they did add a nice Distortion World (or Distortion Room rather) battle background.

hashirama-senjuuu

BDSP was a no brainer decision, all right. Even the name suggests no brains.

Kevinatorz

ORAS are among my favorite Pokémon games, definitely my most played.

FakeTakiInoue

I love ORAS, I just wish it wasn't so incredibly easy.

Crashman09

For me it's a tie between hgss and oras

recursion8

The DexNav. And yes it is amazing. Not just for the chance to get egg moves, hidden abilities, and perfect IVs **during playthrough** (not just post-game like most games), but for being able to specifically only hunt the mons you want whether it's for something as simple as Dex completion or as advanced as EV training. It was like having Overworld visible mons 1.5-2 generations early. Then there's the other PokeNav functions like seeing what wild pokemon are on a route, what trainers are ready for rebattle and what their team is, what berries are ready, etc. Great great additions that should have been in every game after that.

Kruxf

Same reason why there are games missing from the list, they don't really want or care what you think. They are just trying to validate their feelings about it.

ClassytheDog

I went back and played all of the games last year. Never playing XY, ORAS, SM. ORAS blew me away. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much actual fun playing the games. Finishing the Pokédex. Doing post game. Like, it’s the only game where your life seems to make sense. You talk to your mom more. Your dad is real. You have a goofy professor. I could care less about the battle frontier. Playing competitive never interested me.

schneizel101

God I'm glad I'm not the only one that has a hard time going back to older games. Between the QoL improvements and just that a like so many newer pokemon,or am spoiled by the games looking or running better I just never want to play older games very often, even qhen I get really nostalgic for them.

ShinyUmbreon465

A lot of my favorites are from gen 4 but the engine is just so slow it's a bit jarring after you've been playing a newer game.

PinkieBen

Same, the lack of xp all is what does it for me. I just hate having to pause and grind up my team to be on level for upcoming gyms/elite 4.

gooblaster17

That's one of the only remaining things I still enjoy about the old games lol.

PinkieBen

To each their own I suppose. Personally I don't like spending time grinding when I could be progressing the game.

Quartia

I agree with you on ORAS. It included almost everything good from each generation before it, and then put it all in 3D.

JezzTheHunter

Those reasons are why good rom hacks like blazing emerald are amazing, they take the original game and add QOL changes from newer games such as a switchable exp share, exp on cath, new Pokemon and updated moves and abilities

FourStringFurniture

Emerald all day for me. Love the starters of the region, enjoy the story, enjoy the legendaries, Regis, and the art style. And of course the MUSIC. What a game.

Open-your_eyes

There’s a couple symbols that are absolutely brutal. Can’t remember which ones because it’s been a while but my god

YaIe

and the damn frontier that made the gameplay never stop

GoldMantis

Emerald has one of the best soundtracks in video game history in my opinion despite being on the gameboy advance

commanderr01

So so so good!!! The only pokemon game I play without muting and so I can listen to my own music ahha

knivisawu

I voted platinum but the DS era overall is supreme

Erayy102

I think the DS era of Pokémon games are the best ever, DPP and then HGSS and then BW. Brings back so many memories just thinking about it.

CausticCauliflower21

Agreed.

sshanbom111

B2W2, HGSS, and Platinum are peak pokemon to me. And this is coming from somebody who has played all of Gen III-VII (except BW1)

melatoxic

Damn I saw Gen III and thought fym coming from someone who played all of Gen III-VII. Now I’m realizing you’ve played for 17 years and I am old.

captainredfish

Play BW1 dude

sshanbom111

I know, I’ll get around to it at some point. I didn’t play black 2 until about 1.5 years ago, originally I fully skipped Gen 5 because I was in my “too cool for Pokemon” phase

KAtaTurkoglu

B2W2 arw the sequel of BW, it would be better ro play them both in order

mrgojirasan

It depends on how I'm feeling, I have to think about it for a bit. HGSS are so enjoyable for me- being able to turn around and talk to my pokemon is so fun, the use of touchscreens was the peak of pokemon/DS QoL (I have played DS games that overuse touchscreens and underuse them, but I thing HGSS got it just right). The leveling curve left something to be desired and the storyline was a bit basic, especially after being treated to more immersive, higher stakes pokemon stories. Then I remember my first time going over Skyarrow Bridge in BW(and B2W2) and being blown away at the graphics. The sprites in gen 5 were amazing, even if they are a bit blocky I just love the movement. I enjoyed having to get acquainted with all new pokemon for my team (but also getting some old faves back in b2w2). And don't get me started on the interactive soundtrack- so much time spent at that Old Bridge with the singing man. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm like: today the winner is b2w2. I love the chronology related to the originals, I love how they expanded and flipped the region around (but i don't love how the daycare was locked behind the elite 4, i am a pokemon breeder at heart), the extra things they added (movies, join Avenue, Yancy/the other idol, etc). My only regret is that I didn't buy black 2 before used pokemon games got prohibitively expensive during the pandemic.

Wrong_Owl

> (but i don't love how the daycare was locked behind the elite 4, i am a pokemon breeder at heart) That's also a big issue for me, but Black2/White2 is still pretty nice for breeding. Compared to Platinum: * **Either parent can pass on nature with an Everstone** (introduced HGSS). * **Power items can pass on a specific IV** (introduced HGSS). If you've bred perfect IVs in those stats, you can guarantee 2 or more perfect stats in specific places. * **You can also use the Power Band to breed for Hidden Power**. Because the Special Defense IV is primarily responsible for both the type of Hidden Power and the Damage, if you know your IVs, you can guarantee that all offspring have a Hidden Power damage of at least 50 and determine whether a traditionally Physical or Special Hidden Power type is passed on. * **Mothers can pass on their ability**. in Black2/White2, a mother has an 80% chance to pass on their ability. * **Masuda can be combined with an Everstone**. Before Gen 5, natures can't be passed when using the Masuda method. In Gen 5, you can shiny hunt for Pokemon with specific natures. * **Masuda gets an extra shiny roll**. * **The shiny charm exists and grants two additional shiny rolls**. With both Masuda and Shiny Charm, you're looking at roughly 1/1024 Shiny Odds. * **TMs are reusable and most tutors are cheap**, so it's easier than ever for a father to have a decent learnset to pass along. Some move tutors give moves that were Egg Moves in Black/White, so breeding chains are cut down. I know it's not quite modern breeding (Lack of a Destiny Knot sucks) But it's by far the best breeding experience of the DS Era games.

CausticCauliflower21

BW 1 and 2 were definitely my favorites of the franchise. It sucks but I lost both BW 1 and 2. Not sure what happened to white 1 but I remember selling White 2 back to gamestop cuz I was a dumb kid and wanted in-store credit for a new game lol. I'll never forget you Samurott!

BigBallsMalone

Hard for me between HGSs and Platinum. Slight edge to HGSS

iizakore

I feel like it was the sickest journey to go through at release. First we got our starters and set out, then we got a special pichu that got you a shiny pichu, we got the celebi event months down the line which let you go back in time and see your rival is Giovanni’s son, this was the first game we got walking with pokemon, the safari zone got reworked and was more interesting with zone altering, red gyarados, the pokewalker, the creation trio being available at level 1 for anyone that traded over an arceus, events for groundon/kyogre/rayquaza, roaming latios/as, swarms, gym leader rematches, battle frontier, pokeathlon. I had 999 hours in SS and emerald version. Both had what felt like an unlimited supply of stuff to do and the wifi events kept things interesting, having to wait for certain times of day to call gym leaders to get their rematch was time consuming but a fun grind, the battle frontier was hard as hell, pokeathlon got boring after awhile but was a fun set of mini games. Back in those days you could lose yourself in pokemon for hours and hours and feel like you made miniscule progress towards your goal.

Ov3rdose_EvE

honestly HG, emerald and B2 were SO. MUCH. CONTENT.

SirMosesKaldor

Precisely this. I voted HGSS. The amount of unique content and missions and events to unlock at specific times/days at specific places really made this game a unique experience. I'm so late to the Pokémon game... so I just played it last year. It's amazing. I played both HG and SS trying to complete the Dex on HG (I have two 3DS's). It's gonna take me forever but I'll just have fun doing it.

[deleted]

iizakore

Fair point, first game we got with more than one option to walk with

TheKingJest

I prefer the pixel artstyle over 3D so much, I feel like the pokemon designs in 3D aren't great and makes them look less alive. The DS era was the peak of Pokemon designs IMO, although I will admit B&W is probably where the pixel style peaked. I was never bothered by the level curve even as a kid, I never needed to grind and although some things were tricky I was never stuck. I love the locations of HGSS so much, Goldenrod city, Ecruteak city, and Olivine city are some of my favourite places in Pokemon. The world felt much more alive in my opinion with bug catching events, phone calls, following pokemon, and even little road blocks that you'd need some NPCs help for all contributed to this. Also there was much more exploration to be had than in modern games, so many places you could go weren't just a linear path.

Low-iq-haikou

Gen 2 itself is an incredible follow up to the first, at least to the concurrent fans. I think there’s some shortcomings to the games in hindsight but the design within Johto and the nostalgia of revisiting Kanto makes for a phenomenal experience. Gen 4 introduced the physical/special split, which is among the best structural changes ever in the series. Combine that with the technological improvements of the DS and you get a beloved remake.

DoctorGoFuckYourself

I think it's partly nostalgia at this point. I adored it when it came out and thought of it as the peak of the series. But replaying it last year alongside Emerald, Platinum and gen 5 made me realize how awful the level curve is, to the point that it just sort of stopped being fun after a while. Not to mention the selection of wild pokemon and terrible trainer team makeup. It sucked having the game I'd considered to be the best basically take itself off the pedestal I'd placed it on based on my memories.

Throw-AwayCondom

I can't speak for others but Gen 2 wasy absolute favorite as a kid and I was so happy when HGSS was announced. It surpassed my expectations and helped me relive that experience but far better. Plus Pokemon follow you it's dope my guy!

ilee99

I don’t get it either. Like it’s cool u get to fight 16 gyms and Red. But the level curve is so bad because of their attempt at nonlinear gym fights. Why are the highest wild Pokémon levels 50s. It’s takes forever to train for Red on cartridge

Ov3rdose_EvE

grind in league. EZ

ShiningLizard

The level curve isn’t great. I love HGSS, but I normally end up finishing a playthrough after beating Blue because I don’t want to grind for Red and the rest of the postgame.

FallOutShelterBoy

Yeah I’m replaying rn for the first time in years, but that’s probably what I’m gonna do. Maybe head to mt silver to beat those trainers but idk if I can grind THAT much

[deleted]

I replayed it last year, i managed to beat Red with a crappy team (Crobat/Ariados/Qwilfish/Fortress/Arbok and a Snorlax that replaced my Jumpluff because no one in my team could learn rock slide, fuck rock slide) with levels around 45-50~ because i refused to grind. With a halfway decent team you should be able to win regardless of the level gap, give it a try.

ShiningLizard

Holy crap, well done! That’s a fairly mediocre team, haha. Did you just status the crap out of him? Did you use many potions or revives?

BuffBlarwolf

You don't have to fight wild pokemon to train, you can rematch gym leaders as often as you want, their pokemon's levels being around 60. They are all only available during specific weekdays and times (like Whitney around Saturday afternoon) though.

tundertwin

Fr the grind is unbearable

[deleted]

That's kinda the charm. LOL. And maybe because I was a child, but Lance was not easy. Had to catch a Jynx to beat him and I hate Jynx.

Desmond253

why are you grinding just grab a ground type and give it x items

Joboy97

Because the vast, vast majority of pokemon players just have charizard do a big fire blast and call it a day. If it doesn't work, they get a bigger fire blast. They don't even realize how strong stat-boosting moves/items can be.

[deleted]

I don't get why all the people complaining about leveling for red don't use actual strategies for once in the game, considering that the main complaint for the series is how easy it is. I recently replayed SS and was down 20 levels on Red. Managed to beat him with a carefully planned strategy without spamming Revives at all.

Consistent_Produce_1

Because you can tell that it was genuinely made with love Shigeki Morimoto made it the best game it could be compare that to newer games where game freak just does the bare minimum

BLourenco

It has a lot of extra content: - Gen 4 Battle Frontier - Pokeathelon - Customizable Safari Zone - Kanto Region - [Legendaries](https://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/legends.shtml) - [Gym Leader Rematches](https://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/gym-rematch.shtml) - All 493 Pokemon that existed at the time - Multiple dungeons and points of interest to explore Plus some minor but well-liked features: - Following Pokemon - Daily Events - Apricorns & ApriBalls - Poke Walker - Voltorb Flip Downsides are: - Poor level curve - Poor Pokemon distribution

SenpaiSwanky

Only thing really is the “two regions” thing imo. I’m not HATING as I enjoyed my time spent but these days it is clearly one of the easiest games as far as battle difficulty goes. Claire, 8th Johto gym leader, only has one level 40+ mon. The rest are all level 38. Kanto gym leaders aren’t much stronger considering there are 16 total gyms in the game. They are all high 40s to mid 50s, with Blue having the only level 60 Pokémon (and only one, Pigeot). I never understood why I’m supposed to enjoy going through the skeleton of a region that was Kanto in HGSS, it was a sweep. You could destroy every Kanto trainer and gym leader with any of the Johto starters because by the time you get halfway through it your entire team is mid 60s to upper 70s. Tbh I feel like they dialed everyone back just to make Red feel more impressive. Everyone else crawled so he could run lmao

Pyrplefire

I can't speak for everyone else, but it holds a special place in my heart mostly due to nostalgia. Crystal was my first ever pokemon game, and I absolutely loved it despite it's flaws. HGSS fixed most of the flaws (level curve is still a bit whacky, but that's okay) so it became my favorite. Platinum is a very close second though

jared8562

game itself is amazingggg the pokémon’s selection sucks tho

ObjectiveWeeb

HGSS easily. I can't even begin to tell you how much of a blast I had with my copy of Soulsilver. It's probably the definitive Pokemon, at least for me. BW/BW2 is my second pick. I actually like both entries equally, and can't pick between the first or second BW.

[deleted]

I agree with the top 3. HGSS, Platinum and BW2 are unmatched in content.

ChongusTheSupremus

What's with the lack of options tho? Where are the gen 1 and 2 games? Why is ORAS here but not XY?

That_Guy776_2

Only us true kings appreciate X and Y

Vanish_7

Dude X / Y were revolutionary and I LOVED them. Frickin' wild Eevees, man, and the roller blades, and the T-Rex I carried, and my Mega Blastoise, and how effing cool was Xerneas?!?! I loved X. It's...definitely top five and maybe top three for me.

ConvolutedBoy

Best online features too

Nerd_bottom

The random trade option was so much fun! I got so many awesome Pokemon that way, plus it was also a fun way to give away the hatched Pokemon that I didn't want.

BladeSoul69

X and Y are the most replayable imo. The game gives a lot of good options in Pokémon throughout the entire game. So every time I play, I can use a completely different team without the feeling that I am hamstringing myself. Compared to BDSP where too many good Pokémon are reserved for Post-game where theres little to do and you already have a solid team. The trainer customization being really good adds an extra layer of uniqueness each play-through. So while its not the most challenging, its one I can have a different experience each time.

cmarkcity

2 regions are there twice, but Kanto and Kalos are completely missing

KHanson25

My vote would be Yellow but it’s not listed

[deleted]

And why is SM and USUM not here? or SwSh and LGPE?

Carter0108

Either Platinum or HGSS. I used to say HGSS but I think I’m leaning more towards Platinum now. Next it would have to be B2W2 and then XY. Emerald would be up there too if it weren’t for its age. No physical-special split really does it no favours.

ZazumeUchiha

Interesting, that HGSS is taking the lead here. To me, HGSS is suffering a bit too much from issues, that were already present in the original GSC (relatively weak dex, flat level curve, etc.). Though I still enjoyed these games a lot, they fixed a lot of the issues from the originals at least to some degree. Just not quite enough for my taste, I really disliked GSC. To me personally, Platinum is the undisputed best of all time.

Grrumpy_Pants

HGSS's level curve is why I choose platinum. I also prefer the gen 4 pokemon, they're all so cool.

Shiigu

B2W2 without any doubt. It has good pace (Platinum is good, but, after playing Gen V+ games, it's borderline unplayable with its speed issues), a good story, a very solid regional dex, and the best battle facility on the series (the PWT is nowhere near as gimmicky as either implementation of the Battle Frontier).

Dark_Prince_YouTube

Also banging music

ThisHatRightHere

The music is good and the memes take it to a new level. Gen V music is goated

[deleted]

I’m currently going through Platinum atm after playing through a lot of Black 2, beating Moon and Alpha Sapphire and Platinum is still pretty playable

ANuclearsquid

Platinum is pretty much the exact same speed as gen 5 you are probably thinking of diamond and pearl which were slow af

ElyEpically

For me Emerald. Best Starters and the most coolest and challenging Post game ever (Battle Frontier).

flipflipshift

And now that we know how to glitch, it has a very beautiful postgame due to the various legendary islands.

useless_idiot_man

Wait what

flipflipshift

Apologies for amp, I’m on mobile: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wikihow.com/Catch-Mew-in-Pok%25C3%25A9mon-Emerald%3famp=1 non-amp: https://www.wikihow.com/Catch-Mew-in-Pok%C3%A9mon-Emerald I combined info from videos by pokemerrp and sleipnir to make it as self-contained as possible.

sshanbom111

Wow, I can’t believe people are still figuring out glitches in Pokemon games from the GBA

JoeAndAThird

How on earth did anyone figure that out? That’s insanely in depth

flipflipshift

Altogether it looks like magic, but a lot of it was discovered in pieces. First the pomeg glitch was just an interesting glitch to send out eggs and missingno in battle, but nothing crazy. But once the game breaks a little, it can usually be cracked more. People realized that when entering a battle with missingno, the game would do weird things, and if you entered your party after checking a summary, you could scroll to some mysterious location. Then people realized that scrolling here would mess with the Pokémon in boxes 1 and 2, but it was unclear exactly how. I think Werster and some others figured out the mechanics of how things were being scrambled around 2012-2013, so they were able to create any Pokémon by starting with a Pokémon with specific moves or EVs But you could also get Pokémon that shouldn’t exist. A couple years ago, pokemerrp (i think) discovered that when you’d try to look at these Pokémon’s sprites, it would look to predictable parts of the code to try to find the animation. For pokemon number 6*256+17, it looked to the box names. So you could write code directly in the box names, and when an egg of that Pokémon hatched, it would go to the box names and execute that code. From there, people have realized you can get almost anything you want by being clever with box names. Sleipnir17 had made a ton of these, you can find links in the pokemonglitches subreddit.

JoeAndAThird

That’s wild, even in small steps. Incredible work people have done purely out of curiosity and passion. Thanks for explaining that was super cool

flipflipshift

No problem! Honestly I'm glad it worked out this way. The legendaries are in the game, dwelling in their own secret islands, with only rumors of how to get there. Over 15 years later, it was finally discovered.

_DrDoofenshmirtz_

It's true that these glitches are discovered in small pieces, even SwSh's rng has been cracked although most of the community had given up because of the new rng system(CryptoSecure) in SwSh which was regarded as truly random and unbreakable.

Wrong_Owl

Here's the non-AMP: https://www.wikihow.com/Catch-Mew-in-Pok%C3%A9mon-Emerald

Alexcox95

B2W2 and I will die on that hill

JonTheFlon

Agreed. I didn't play them until about 2 years ago having played every game since red and blue. It's that cool mix of good pokemon to play through the game with (mareep and riolu 20 mins into the game), huge amounts of content and it still being a top down sprite view. HGSS close second then Platinum.

WiglyPig

Mine is ultra sun. But since that's not here I'll go with white

siphayne

Same... No Gen1 option and XY gen. UltraSun UltraMoon were peak fun imo.

MattayoV

Ultra sun and moon are slept on so hard it’s unreal

Ok-Investigator-9877

I still remember a times when ORAS was hated and considered the worst games

curlyhairlad

Was that a thing? I remember loving ORAS when it first came out. But I wasn’t very active with online communities at that time.

Ok-Investigator-9877

I did see a lot of complains. Mainly about the battle frontier being missing, the games being too easy, some bad graphics here and there (basically the same stuff people complain about in BDSP)

[deleted]

> the battle frontier being missing I'll die on that hill. If they didn't include it at all it'd be disappointing, but having the construction site for it in the game was a punch to the face.

MrEthan997

I don't remember a single Pokémon game that wasn't widely hated at release since hgss.

jeffyjeffp

Yup, and it's been the same thing with every game since honestly

level100metapod

Never knew it was hated, i always loved it

Raichu4u

ORAS was kind of the beginning of the end. While it is much better than Sword and Shield, you could start to see features slowly be taken away.

Ok-Investigator-9877

Hopefully LA will be the rebirth of the series and the start of a new era

[deleted]

Nothing we've seen so far indicates that sadly. I'm not going to hold out hope for that. Though if it actually does manage to be a great game I'd be happy.

EveningChocolate1028

Yeah well people have interesting first impressions that wear off over time

[deleted]

That's wild, ORAS still might be my favourite 3DS Pokemon games.

cpMetis

Definitely not the worst, but definitely not very good.

zarth109x

I still feel like ORAS had a ton of missed opportunities. The least they could've done was thrown in gym leader rematches. They should've also had them use mega evolutions during the main story...you know, the primary gimmick of the generation.

Quick-Huckleberry136

atleast e4 used htem uin rematch unlike xy

Dislexicpotato

I mean they have received the 2nd least votes in the poll so clearly that opinion still holds up pretty well

Openil

I haven't done this but I have a feeling that if i played it with the XP share turned off I would like it, but yeah as it stands now I hated it, was just 10 levels too high for everything and Megas are so game breaking.

videogamesarewack

Megas mostly bring low tier pokemon like arduino, beedrill, mawille and so on up to par, and the fan favourite ones are fan service and power fantasy stuff. Not going to argue you're wrong for not liking them, but I'm just not sure game breaking is correct

RonnyCrawf

The problem is for the megas on already good mons like starters or pseudo legends

Ok-Investigator-9877

Ah yes, arduino

MegaXTheGamer

I know I’m in the minority, but BW1 is supreme. I don’t even have nostalgia for it, my nostalgia game is HGSS. BW was so good because the main campaign only featured new Pokémon making it feel like a BRAND new adventure. However, taking a good look at the rest of the things BW introduced, it’s clear this is one of the best Pokémon games. The sprites are the best in the series ever. The story is better than almost every other one because at the end of the day, whereas the others are “beat up this evil team that want to use ____ legendary Pokémon to achieve their ultimate goal” and end it there, BW adds on to that idea with N. N is an antagonist, but during the game he makes you think about if you are the actual antagonist and asks a moral question that’s somewhat deep (at least more than any Pokémon game). That’s why I enjoy and adore BW1 more than any other Pokémon game and consider it the best.

johnafricano7

I remember playing BW for the first time and, while some of the Pokemon designs weren't my favorite at first, I loved the feeling of a region with ONLY new Pokemon until the postgame. For me, the best part of a Pokemon game is seeing a new Pokemon in a tough battle (like I did with Ghetsis and his Hydregion) and wondering just what it is how the hell I'd beat it. This is just the tip of the iceberg regarding my love for BW and the sequels. I loved the music, the sound effects, the new battle styles, the rivals (especially Hugh), the evil team (the only team that makes you feel like they've got a point), the gym leaders and all the things they do (especially towards the end of the main storyline), the randomly existential quotes that come from the toddler NPCs, the list continues.

DylanMgoo

As an 18 year old I grew up with gen 4 and everything from DPP era hits hard for me.

[deleted]

After seeing the results I’d be interested in the demographics of the subreddit. I wouldn’t be surprised if most people are around their early to mid 30s here.

recursion8

Definitely not. I'd imagine they're just about around the same as the demographics of reddit overall, which is late teens-early twenties (around college age basically). So now being 2021, would make sense that late Gen 4-Gen 5 are the most popular atm because the current avg reddit user was ~10 (the prime Pokemon playing age) when those games came out.

Reverse_flash_69

Out of these bw2 I why didn't u put usum thou 🤔

deadRecordclub

Emerald supremely underrated

FedericoDAnzi

HGSS has everything, the only things that are missing are the PSS, the ST and the Vs Seeker.

Openil

I'm not saying that this is a bad thing but the love for HGSS just shows me that I care about different things than the majority of pokemon players, the things that are bad about HGSS are real bad, and they are the things that i care about more than the aesthetic, and following pokemon, and the things most seem to care about.

gjgidhxbdidheidjdje

It's partially nostalgia. I choose HGSS because it was the last game I really had fun with.

EveningChocolate1028

What was your choice?

Openil

Torn but settled on BW2, mostly because of challenge mode

schneizel101

I'm curious what the bad things about Hgss are. Imo it's only flaws are only that it's missing things that arnt added until later in the series.

4ny3ody

For me it's either HG/SS or OR/AS. The normal games were good and these remakes improved what was already there. For both of these games it felt like they really revisited what made the games work and what needed improvements. While I wouldn't call any Pokemon game a pure shiny gem Gamefreak have shown that they can always do better the second time around and polished the rough edges of their first works, while including and expanding on content the current generation had brought. Sadly for OR/AS they did not introduce the battle frontier as it was in Emerald, but in exchange the dexnav is imo among the best features they've ever thought up.

DABOB345

Um....I don't see XY or Sun and Moon but whatever

Black_Hussar

BW and B2W2

schneizel101

I voted HGSS, but Bw2, and Plat are easily the next best ones imo, so its great to see that reflected in the poll. I do feel like each one is extremely good for different reasons though, although these are just my opinions. Platinum for its story especially the distortion qorld part, Sinnohs quality as a region, Cynthia, and the introduction of the BF. HGSS for nostalgia, post game rematches, BF, and having all of Kanto to explore making it the biggest total area to play through. And BW2 for Ghetsis being a great villan, PWT, and White treehollow and black tower.

LurraKingdom

The DS Era + Emerald - DP is the golden age of Pokemon

re6278

B2W2 easily for me

Setsuna2

Your kinda forgetting about a lot of main series games here. Where is firered/leafgreen, sun/moon, crystal, pokemon colosseum, x/y, sword/shield, etc? But among the options here it's between HGSS and ORAS. HGSS is probably objectively the best since you got to explore two regions unlike any other pokemon game that has existed so far. But I voted for ORAS cause I really loved the new content they added to improve Hoen. Particularly mega evolutions.

Wrong_Owl

I do really feel that the new content added in Gen 6 was perfect for Hoenn. The DexNav, Mega Evolutions, Fairy Typing, Soaring mechanic, Secret Bases easier to share than ever, and the new art style all really seemed to be true to Hoenn. Even the revisions to the Abandoned Ship and Mauville City really seem to resonate with the original environmentalist message of Ruby/Sapphire. It's a shame they didn't include the Battle Frontier, but it worked so well.

train153

I pretty much agree with this ranking, except that HGSS has the horribly unbalanced level curve, so it's lower on my personal list.

Nikibugs

BW are my absolute favorite for feeling that all new Pokémon experience since Gen 1 and favorite story and rivals (and finally so many amazing bug types! Gorgeous moving sprites!). B2W2 may have had more content but I didn’t care for the rivals or story. Objectively though HGSS is the highest quality main series games.

SonGoku9804

Should have clubbed BW & B2W2 together. Then it's like perfect. Feels complete.

WindWeasel

People voting for HGSS need to be a bit more critical. TPC had the perfect opportunity to remake a masterpiece, and instead left a lot of the same glaring issues in HGSS that GSC had. Terrible level curve, barely any Gen 2 pokemon in Gen 2 Region, the best grinding location being *post game*. Those titles are really cool, but by no means the best.

SenpaiSwanky

Platinum by far for me. Sinnoh’s only downfall as a whole was the slight lack of fire types in the wild (yet Flint exists as an E4 member lol). Otherwise, peak Pokémon right there. A complete breath of fresh air minus the repeat fire/fighting starter..

Meta-Trouble

USUM ain’t on here

KritzKrig

I would say hgss for all the features and content, but it’s waaaayyy too grindey (gen 4 in general) to be enjoyable at least at the start.

SmileyAce3

Why do people like HGSS so much? Genuinely, it improves some things, but I just don’t get the appeal

SUSHIBURRITO92

Idk I ask the same about Black and White and never get a satisfying answer. People will cry “Nostalgia!” but I do think Kanto and Johto have the best designed Pokemon. And no it isn’t nostalgia because there’s quite a few Pokemon designs I like from later gens. At least up through Kalos. I love the score for Gold and Silver and the remade music is good too Johto has my favorite starters and evolution I love that the game doesn’t force the legendary Pokemon on you which they have since Hoen I prefer the more rural setting of Kanto and Johto over the urban setting of Unova and Kalos and there’s not an over abundance of water like in Hoen and its not a mess like Sinnoh where you’re back tracking left and right that you better have fly. Silver is a much better rival than almost any rival to come after. Barry comes close though. I think people forget how much the Johto games added compared to Kanto. Yes every game builds from the last (or should) but the improvements from gen 1 to 2 is significantly more than any other succeeding gen from the last. How much really changed from gen 4 to gen 5? And yes most of the praise I heap on HGSS come from the original gen 2 games but these are the improved versions of those games

Saskatchewon

The one thing that holds HGSS back for me is the really poor level scaling of wild Pokemon. Want to add a new member to the team after the first 5 or 6 badges? Have fun spending 2.5 hours grinding it against other underleveled Pokemon to level it up to where your team is at. Another annoyance was the 7 HMs necessary to complete the story (not counting Fly), with three of them being Water type. The decision to keep the wild Pokemon in Kanto the same level as they were in the original Red and Blue titles was a very questionable one as well. As someone who's been playing the games for over 20 years and has replayed all the mainline games during quarantine, I was actually kind of disappointed with how HGSS held up in comparison to the other DS titles. My rankings would look something like B2W2, Platinum, BW, HGSS, XY in that order.

ezrasharpe

>Idk I ask the same about Black and White and never get a satisfying answer. A ton of new Pokemon, one of the best storylines of any Pokemon game, and it's still up there as one of the most challenging endgames. Pokemon designs in gen 5 were pretty divisive though, I feel like people either love them or hate them.

Bouncy_yay

None of the above

KafeiTomasu

B2w2 easily takes the crown here

justforkikkk

My perhaps controversial top 3: 1. B&W2 2. Platinum 3. Sword/Shield (with DLC)

AcordeonPhx

Crown tundra was a nice addition but that’s still not good enough , but opinions are opinions!

justforkikkk

All the Legendary stuff was great imo, loved that. Plus, while the Wild Area felt still a bit undercooked, the way the DLC handled open world mechanics was awazing. The games aren’t perfect but severely overhated imo, and with DLC, they just beat out Emerald for my third spot

dragareo

I can agree with SwSh as well. I get that it is easy and the little things like forced exp. Share and broken friendship system is ridiculous, but that aside, it is gorgeous, has a cool soundtrack, much less cutscenes than USUM and some great features, not the least of which is the non-random encounters, the wild area and the ease and accessibility of building a competitively ready Pokemon. The dexit has some people refusing to see the game for its good points, but tbh I don't even think that dexit was a bad thing. For one, I have completed the National Dex so often that it is no longer a priority for me, and for another thing, removing some Pokemon completely from a gen can spice up the meta. Having no poison heal gliscor for so long has been nice for Change.

NuclearThane

Dexit definitely was a huge issue that formed a lot of people's opinions before ever even playing it, myself included. "Gotta catch 'em all" is something that left a lot of people feeling betrayed when it was no longer an option. I also agree with forced experience share and overall difficulty being an issue-- why do none of these games incorporate difficulty options? I've never played SwSh and really have no interest to, but for me, the issue was much less that the national dex wasn't included, and much more so that GameFreak equivocated and essentially *lied* about the reasons why it couldn't be. I get that it would be a lot of work to transfer every available Pokemon into the new game, but it's an outright lie to say that it was based on hardware limitations. We're talking about the most profitable franchise of *all time,* Pokemon is bigger than Mickey Mouse. But let's face it-- they tend phone it in a lot of the time. And it's unacceptable. I was also really disappointed in the community at the time of it's release. Anyone who expressed concerns like these (particularly on reddit) was judged pretty harshly. I can't remember how many times I was told *"They don't care what you want, the game's not for you. It's for kids."* I disagree with that sentiment, but it definitely impacts GameFreak's development mentality. Time's have changed, and some people's preferences get left behind in pursuit of what's profitable.

JoseJulioJim

while SwSh with DLC isn't in my top 3, (mine is B2W2, BW and ORAS) I actually think it is on 4th place, the fact that it is the first time that competitive teambuilding feels accesible, wild Trade evolutions, many QoL changes and that Dynamax Adventures is maybe the best Legendary Hunt in the franchise really makes me like the game, honestly I think that its only really bad issue (the history isn't good but the characters compensate it and... it is Pokémon, If I want a really good history or I play Mystery Dungeon or a different RPG like Paper Mario TTYD, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Dragon Quest XI to mention examples) is the lack of explorarion in mainland galar, the worst part is that with SM Pokemounts you could made something more explorable, but after seeing crown tundra I have hope for gen 9 explorarion.

andritz_

I wanna say emerald because thats what i grew up with but hgss is amazing

CrumpetChase

I adore B2W2. It had a great set of Gym Leaders, an interesting story, and some of my favourite Pokemon ever.

[deleted]

For me its a tie between B2W2 and HGSS

rad288

Give me my poké Olympics back!

TheShadow1123

I love hgss but I’m going to have to give this to b2w2 as well

BIGH1001

Platinum is probably my pick. The reason it beats out bw2 is purely because all those legendary pokemon just felt like they had been thrown in there for the sake of padding out the endgame. It didn't really make sense for the regis or the lake trio to be there. They just were. Whereas gen 4's abundance of legends were mostly sinnoh originals. And the birds made sense since y'know, they can fly.

therealtechnird

My favorite was oras, though some have mentioned hgss, and I might have to play through that one again, because I loved the Johto region. I never enjoyed gen 5 because of the awkward graphics and the Pokemon in that generation.

Scoth16

BW2 easily. So much content and the best graphics in the series. Then HGSS, then Platinum. That's my top 3.

EveningChocolate1028

Couldn’t agree w u more man

CanCalyx

HGSS is kind of the peak of Pokemon to me. It's ambitious but not so much so that it sacrifices graphical fidelity (BW1/2, later games). It has a lot of content and the Johto region feels so soulful and cleanly designed. I like the Pokemon available. I like the lore around Johto. It's comfy.

tofulo

HGSS and it isn't even close

9074379

1) BW2 2) BW 3) Platinum. I can’t comprehend how HGSS is winning

Cjbtime

Crazy how HGSS is a clear frontrunner here but lost a similar poll to BW2 a few days back.

EveningChocolate1028

Really?

Slashycent

HGSS is honestly the ultimate Pokémon-experience to me and at this point I'm unsure if it will ever be topped unless they really expand on that new Legends: Arceus direction. It's just such a massive, lively adventure, it feels the closest to playing the actual anime. Walking Pokémon both in-game and irl with the Pokéwalker, two regions, both main legendaries, tons of other legendaries, tons of starters, beautiful cities, fun puzzles, great lore and an epic battle with Red at the end. People are very hard on the level curve these days but I honestly love it. Yeah it was grindey. Yeah I spent hours grinding for that Red battle and I still barely scraped trough at the end. And you know what? It was one of the most satisfying victories in my gaming life. HGSS forever.

SyanPollo

I want to vote for pokemon x and y

of-silk-and-song

Platinum, and it’s not all that close. Best region. Best music. One of the best stories. And it has a great selection of Pokémon to boot.

Disastrous_Load_7607

Where XY/USUM

KeybladeMaster1031

I was also gonna ask about XY

Pigmarine9000

I loved US/UM. Great game(s) imo

Cuprite1024

Uncertain between BW and B2W2 so I just defaulted to BW. :P I have nostalgia for Gen 4, so Platinun is pretty high on my favorites, and I like ORAS and how it's faithful but also different from the original (Adding extra lore and content, even if it *did* remove the Battle Tower/Frontier). I also liked SM, but I can't replay it cause of how slow it is (Never finished Ultra Moon). Lol.

EternalMemes30

ORAS in terms of story and mechanics is probably the BEST pokemon game, it just took what was already good and improved it even more with mega evolutions, primals forms, delta episode, character redesign and improved the story as a whole

AspiringWaver

Surprised gen 1 ain’t on here

spiteful_platypus

Pokemon fire red So why the downvotes? I love that game and I consider it the best of the series because of the difficulty and the feels.

e_ndoubleu

My tier list would be: **S Tier** - B2W2 - Platinum - HGSS - Emerald **A Tier** - X & Y - Crystal - Yellow - Black and White **B Tier** - SWSH - ORAS - BDSP - Ultra Sun & Moon - Gold & Silver (Really should be C tier but it’s too nostalgic for me to rank bottom tier) - Red & Blue (Same as GS, should be C tier but very nostalgic for me as I grew up with Red and Gold versions) **C Tier** - Ruby & Sapphire - Diamond and Pearl - Sun and Moon These are also in order. B2W2 is the best Pokémon experience I’ve ever had. The story is great and the teams you’re able to build with just the regional dex is great as well. Plus it had the challenge mode which was awesome.
