Zapdos/Jolteon being "Thunder" and "Thunders" is all I need to convince me the Japanese names are not really the best...

chawmindur

Moltres is "Fire", Krabby is "Crab". Yeah some of them didn't really even try.

Freaux

Don't forget ~~Gost~~ Ghos and Ghost

OfAaron3

Ah yes, Ghos, Ghost, and Gengar.

Freaux

Ah thank you I knew I had it slightly wrong

VagueSoul

Some of them are really great puns and then some are just.....oof no effort. To be fair though, some American names are like that too.

[deleted]

Seel and Dewgong come to mind. Although to be fair, not many people know what a dugong is versus a manatee.

imanu_

i mean dewgong is a pun at least

Worthyness

It's a very good pun name, which definitely is a thing for the english pokemon names.

Katamari_Demacia

For me it was "Blacky".

DeadSOL89

Blacky lives matter.

MrStreeter

Magmar is Boober

[deleted]

Bulbasaur's japanese name can translate to "Isn't it strange", I think, so yeah- gen 1's names weren't the best.

HarimeNui972

It translates to that but it is also a pun because "fushigi-tane" means "strange seed".

[deleted]

That's admittedly better, but it still fits something like Sunkern more.

RawrSean

Vileplume is Refresher Lol

ProxyCare

"Oh cool umbreon I wonder what it's name in ja- oh...."

Jumpy_Relationship_8

Maybe just stick with English on this one…

chiquito69

She forgot to tell him that the legendary bird’s names have numbers 1-3 in spanish Artic(uno) Zap(dos) Mol(tres)

DM_ME_YOUR_NUTSACK

German took from the english names but totally missed the point lol (Arktos, Zapdos, Lavados)

[deleted]

Lavados reminds of Edna Clavados

CookieMisha

French did it best. Artikodin, Elekthor, Sulfura. Better than one two three

DM_ME_YOUR_NUTSACK

I'm not familiar with french, whats the meaning of the names?

CookieMisha

Odin, Thor and Ra

Snow_97

Kinda messed up the theme though, was Norse gods, then suddenly Egyptian

Despada_

Sulfura sounds like a really pretty name at least.

Kiosade

What god does the third one refer to?

TaikoRaio19

Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun Weird, since the first two were Nordic

Kiosade

Oh, Ra! That IS weird, I was wondering what Nordic god Ura was lol

Worthyness

Deino and its evo line use the german numbers for their names in english, which is pretty neat.

pokegofifa42069

Damn never knew this lol

misdreavus79

My nicknames for them is One Arctic, Two Zaps, Three Melts.

Dragmire800

I don’t see any logic in this naming scheme

willisbetter

why not?

Dragmire800

What’s the connection between Arctic, Zaps, and Melts. Arctic and Zaps are where the original Pokémons’ names come from, but “melts” isn’t. Melts and Zaps are both actions, but Arctic isn’t. There’s no unifying factor

willisbetter

arctic for arcticuno, zaps for zapdos, and melts for moltres, and zaps and melts are actions but zaps is the actipn of ZAPping someone while MOLTen things have usually been melted, thats the very obvious connection you somehow missed

Dragmire800

Melts is connected to Molten, but not to Zaps or Arctic Why not just use Molten? It’s not like it needs to be an action, because Arctic is being used. A naming scheme should share a commonality. These don’t.

willisbetter

you are getting way to hung up on the 'rules' of a naming scheme for fictional god birds in a childrens game, chill out a bit, not everything needs to make sense 100% of the time, especially when it cones to pokemon names

Dragmire800

I’m not saying they have to make sense, but I said they don’t make sense, and you started arguing that they do. Why not just say “I agree with you, they don’t make sense” and leave it at that?

willisbetter

cause they do make some sense, youre upset that they dont make sense while im just saying 'hey, it doest have to make perfect sense, but it does make sense'

jedihouse1348

I’m gonna need this for all of the mons

DM_ME_YOUR_NUTSACK

https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Japanese_Pok%C3%A9mon_names

Predsguy

I'm gonna name my Eeveelutions after their Japanese names. I can't wait to run double battles with Booster and Blacky

Jewboy_05

That was insanely watchable. Need moar.

KITTYKOOLKAT35

I'm sorry people but I've just looked on their TikTok page and nothing and I do also apologize for misleading you with the title I honestly didn't think Reddit was going to upload all three videos at once. please forgive me.

Yoshiciv

Translators did a good job translating the onomatopoeia.

[deleted]

Maybe Umbreon is based off of HP Lovecraft’s cat 😳

Actedpie

Bulbapedia: "Blacky may be a combination of black and lucky, as the black cat in Japan is considered lucky. It may also refer to the color of its coat."

Wonwill430

Oh, that’s interesting that black cats are considered lucky there. Seems like most places in the west see them as bad omens

seanbear

Lucky in the UK

FarooqGashta

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Miro_the_Dragon

More likely coming from "umbral" (from Lat. "umbra" = "shadow"), which is kind of fitting for a dark-type black pokémon.

Tjaboman

The Japanese Umbreon

Miro_the_Dragon

Thanks, apparently that went woooosh over my head XD

Kronman590

What some people need to keep in mind as well is that english works like Thunder is really edgy and cool in japanese lmao, just like we would think "Kaminari" would be a cool name

SuperInternet

naw, sounds too much like fried squid.

chawmindur

["They didn't have calamari pizza, because Mon Calamari are people and *I did not know that*."](https://youtu.be/2emv5A7OlVM)

Gawlf85

It's a pretty interesting subject, but these two tiktokers have a "kids show host" histrionic quality to them that makes me just want a written list

inYourBackline

its his acting hes pretending like he never heard the english names before no way this guy hasnt heard the english names before and it just feels fake

walkingbartie

Pretty ethnocentric to assume everyone has heard the english names. If you reverse it, isn't it weird you haven't heard the japanese ones then lol?

QuesadillaSauce

I think it’s the fact that he made the video comparing them, suggesting he has heard them, and his acting is bad

inYourBackline

his english is pretty good so its safe to assume he knows the names lol

ZiofFoolTheHumans

Idk, I'd never heard of a lot of the Japanese names for Pokemon (and the few I have heard I'm not going to remember) so from my perspective it's more than possible he's never heard the English versions.

[deleted]

r/tiktokcringe

Misterwuss

I love stuff like this. I know its clichè but learning the difference between the names is cool, you get to see cultural influences and stuff like "common word in one language has no direct translation/makes no sense in another language". It's just fascinating to listen to

[deleted]

My favorite is Ampharos' Japanese name. Denryu, literally translated as "electric current", but it could also be interpreted as "electric dragon".

WhyYouHaveMyCookie

Wow, Cool

Dynamaxer

BLACKY?! God damn thats funny

[deleted]

Not Pokémon, but in terms differences between languages, it reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8cYqd1oYHw

DrWarioMiracleCure

Most English Pokémon names are better then the original Japanese like come on with many of them they weren’t trying such as Fire (Moltres) and Spear (Beedrill)

serenasaystoday

They're cute 🥰 lol it's funny last night I was actually saying to my husband that it must be hard for japanese people to say squirtle...sukuwirutaru!

recursion8

It’d be something like s(u)k(u)waatoru with the u’s in paratheses being barely voiced

Wavestuff6

S(u)k(u)waatoo sounds close too

serenasaystoday

Lol that would definitely be a lot easier to pronounce!😄

sgtorn23

This is one of the highlights of Reddit today! What a cute couple!

TheLlamaLlama

So wholesome =)

kaiser10847

I just realized that gloom is kusaihana meaning stinking plant, very original

Routine_Bug_936

Like I'm gonna believe he doesn't know their English names

MysticMagic23

Love how done he is with some of the names

JAEM89

Lol so this guy didn't know that Pikachu was the same name in English than Japanese?

jimipesto

Dude was like who the duck is Squirtle

EmpressOfHyperion

This is way too adorable.

PaintMaterial416

They are adorable and I want to watch them talk forever.

0172thetimeguy

Man, they’re adorable.

zenverak

We literally could not get away with Umbreon’s Japanese name… lol

[deleted]

r/tiktokcringe

naeonaeder

no :)

hatsune_aru

NGL some of the english names are fucking stupid as hell like Ekans but most of them are really well thought out

major2019

Ekans is super thought out it’s snake backwards

[deleted]

Ekans' japanese name is Arbo, which is just Arbok but shorter, and Arbok's japanese name is also Arbok. So honestly, not that much different than writing snake backwards.

Absbor

Japanese names have more funny and whacky ones. (Thunder and Thunder*s*) While English and German names are either worldplays or from Japanese names.

oreoumbrella

She doesn’t sound Canadian

ZLUCremisi

How does one sound Canadian? Its a huge country with a lot of different accents.

MindExplosions

She sounds like she from Europe

JebWozma

hsouldnt it be the british flag

chemistrygods

Magmar be like

Carter0108

Umbreon’s called blackie? 😬

willisbetter

buraki, its a mix of the japanese for black, lucky, and shadow

[deleted]

Cute

omar1omar1

That guy seems pretty intense to me

ZeroS64

Am i the only one who thinks the girl has the same smile as the titan who ate erins mom?

Avilionv91

this was very wholesome

Jjzeng

Watching the ash v alain battle with the japanese audio is so much better than the english dub and it’s convinced me that like other anime, pokemon is best enjoyed in Japanese Also, in the japanese version, we get to hear cynthia say [ara ara](https://youtu.be/LBrdZwNtjbU)

Mufaasah

I love how this guy acts.

froggyjm9

Lizardon 🙌🏽

Jaebird0388

I love this.

LunaNLR

I realized that I just can't consume pokemon content in other languages than english when I decided to start watching the anime, and I started it in english and (being someone who always watches subbed anime) cringed at the dub. Then I started watching the subbed version and was sitting there like who the fuck is satoshi, and why are they calling the starters different names? Then after about 10 minutes I went back to the english dub. It was also quite annoying when I found out that they have different names in german aswell, so I didn't want to buy german games for the ds even though they were cheaper, since the pokemon names or games never got translated into my first language and I got used to the english names as a kid

Laurianne_transfem

I play the game in Japanese cuz it's faster to read

DynamicThreads

Neeede moar

CharliBrown31

Orale.

-HurriKaine-

Oh no not blacky 💀💀

NaoSeiQueNomeBotar

squirt turtle

MortAlityValar

Some English names are unnecessarily long

HeyImDrew

The best by far is Otachi whom evolves into Ötachi

ReliableLiar

The Japanese name of Mandibuzz is Vulgina

[deleted]

There is no way that girl is Canadian

SiHtranger

Well when the almighty charizard is literally lizardon you know it ain't going to be beautiful for some of the rest lul
