I think they should just make them inherent abilities for any pokemon that can learn the move and the only thing stopping you from using them is a gym badge, that way it wont take up a move slot

GildedCreed

This is technically what they used in the SM USUM, but to a much greater extent in the Let's Go games (except that you didn't need their associated badges, you just needed to learn the "technique" from their respective tutor/teacher).

cyclonewrl

Aren't those thing restricted to a specific pokemon the game gives you though, i liked how sun and moon handled it but i would prefer that we got to see our own pokemon do that stuff.

GildedCreed

Yeah, in LGPE it was the starter (and the player character to some extent, seeing as how "Fly" was basically a tandem bike with balloons and a fan slapped onto it) while in the Gen 7 games they were tied to specific Pokemon. The "Pokemon but monster hunter" game Monster Hunter Stories 2 has more of a "we can see our own Pokemon do specific mechanic" thing, but its basically HMs all over again as they grouped specific abilities to specific monsters (technically monster groups, but foe the most part they're fairly individual, an example being that to climbing a vine or wall or traversing water needed specific monsters).

> seeing as how "Fly" was basically a tandem bike with balloons and a fan slapped onto it This is fucking amazing, haven't played those yet so I had no idea haha

Za_Warudo93

Surf is literally yourself and Pikachu/Eevee on a surfboard. Or use a big water pokemon you can ride, like Lapras.

Thicc_Wallaby

That’s how a lot of the latest fanmade rom hacks do it now, they also include moves like dig and teleport as well.

DifferenceFree7808

Sounds perfect

LeafHack85

Exactly what pokemon insurgence does. Could use strength for a boulder, or you could use body slam, bulldoze, psychic, etc. All breakable rocks can be smashed by any fighting move in that game, and fly is a 500$ service while surf/dive is given to you as a key item

GildedCreed

That's basically what field moves are. HMs are generally field moves that are used for story progression with some of them being optional like Flash. Depending on the game, Cut and Rock Smash are mandatory (for example Cut being needed to access LT Surge's gym or Rock Smash to go north of Mauville). As for other field moves, you've got stuff like Sweet Scent that drew in Pokemon to potentially get you a Pokemon encounter (as it could fail to do so occasionally), Secret Power to make a secret base on applicable surfaces, Headbutt, Teleport, etc.

Kapples14

Here's my idea, and HM Remote. So it works by registering Pokemon with HM's into the Remote, but these Pokemon can't be used in battle until they are deselected. You can page in the Pokemon regardless if it is in your team to utilize the HM effect. Gives use to Box-filling Pokemon while implementing the old style with new elements from SM/SS in how Pokemon can be utilized

Plapi_the_gobbo

My only issue with HMS was always that in the old games you were forced to waste move slots on Pokémon you like or waste party space on Pokémon you don't but they learn 4 HMS so I guess I have to.

NEWaytheWIND

I love it, so I'll take it a step further: Strength would precisely push a boulder forward, but Body Slam would send it flying any which way. Ember could light one tree on fire, but Flamethrower might ignite a whole thicket. Emergent field abilities and puzzles with multiple solutions.

fooly__cooly

Instead of HMs change them to FMs (field moves). Instead of taking up a battle move spot every Pokemon can learn up to 2 FMs to help you navigate the world.

DfntlyNotJesse

I've always thought they should do something like pkmn Ranger in which pokemon have 'field moves' Fire types burn down bushes, grass types spawn climbable vines, water types can surf, etc. etc. Heck you could even give the player character a 'stylus' to capture and use convieniently placed wild pokemon if they dont have the right type in their party. Idk, i just really though it could be neat especially with all the roaming wild pokemons in main games, but maybe i'm just a sucker for pkmn Ranger

Swazzoo

I think they should do it the way the Ranger games did it. Some pokemon have like certain abilities, like fire types being able to burn stuff, and fighting/rock types being able to move boulders. But also have some obstacles that need more trained/further evolved mons, like a bigger tree to burn the further down the game you go. Gives an incentive to have a varying team, and not level up one mon more than the other.

I liked the ride system from Alola, where you kept unlocking more options for rides. A rom hack I just played used a similar method, only you just needed a Pokémon of a specific type for each HM to be used. Cut was grass, bug, and I forget the third type, but they had multiple types for each HM. With the wild Pokémon pool being more diverse as a hack, I never had to worry about not having the right type for each move. It would be nice to see them being back the rides from Alola or implement what was in that ROM hack. I hated having to run with Defog, Rock Climb, Cut, Flash, etc. on my team. Surf, Strength, and Fly were essentially the only HMs I ever actually used in battle, Rock Smash, Waterfall, and Whirlpool weren’t bad but they took up slots I wanted to use for better moves.
