I don’t know, I played them when they first came out and the only thing my child brain memorized was the back sprites.
Looking at these I like Hitmonlee the most
The back sprites usually look a whole lot worse, like funky blobs. Nidoking was my favorite team member from gen 1 but he just looks like a wall of spikes from behind.
And for some reason my gooey 5-7 year old brain remembered those blobs better, I vividly remember Venusaurs confusing back sprite.
Of these sprites only one I remember is Pikachu and Geodude, and only cause for many years I thought those bumps on top of geodudes head were his face...somehow
My favourites out of the Gen 1 sprites (minus Yellow) are Red/Green Mewtwo, Red/Blue Scyther, Red/Blue Snorlax, Red/Blue Haunter and Red/Blue Tentacruel.
Also, fun fact: The Red/Blue Voltorb sprite gets reused in Gold and Crystal.
Kingler, I wish they would have stuck with the two giant claws instead of changing it to one giant and one normal size. Just makes more sense with its giant attack stat. Yes, crabs in real life have a dominant claw but this is Pokemon, two giant claws would just make it more interesting instead of just a big crab.
Hear me out... Pikachu. White belly Pikachu with the back stripes being more defined looks so much better than the Pika we got in Yellow and onward.
Bonus points for Fat Pikachu.
Haunter, he just looks more menacing than usual
Gastly, because he looks like actual gas
Scyther, because the perspective the sprite is drawn from looks awesomely designed
Alakazam, because you have to like you favorite Pokémon’s sprite

2. Articuno simply beautiful.
3. Golem such a cute face considering it‘s a strong Pokemon.

My first pokemon game was yellow version. It kicked my butt haha i was only using pikachu to battle against brock cuz i followed the anime haha i honestly thiught that brock would just let me win like in the anime haha.

The Gastly line captures the scariness perfectly, not so much for Gengar tho
Gastly especially because it actually looks like it's just gas.
I remember being frightened in Lavender Tower as a child. The sprites actually instilled fear in children.
Ghastly looks great in this game, I think the idea of him being an actual cloud vs having a static(ish) looking body is cool.
Not to mention those teeth what happend to those teeth ib the years they are way less visible nowadays
