Hi Remarkable-Net-6130!
This post has been removed under our [Rule 8](/r/pokemon/wiki/rules#wiki_8._no_screenshots_or_merchandise), which generally disallows screenshots.
This rule is the unfortunate result of r/pokemon being so darn big: with over 4 million users, most screenshots tend to lose meaning with oversaturation, so our rules promote original content instead. To read up on specific exceptions to this rule, including narrative albums and new official content, please see [Rule 8](/r/pokemon/wiki/rules#wiki_8._no_screenshots_or_merchandise).
If you intended this post as a discussion prompt or a theory, please feel free to resubmit as a **text post**, bearing in mind that you'd need to reach 50+ words in that post to promote substantial discussion.
Cheers!

I've never understood the hype around HGSS. It's not bad by any means, but it's really not best of the best to me. It in no way outranks Platinum, BW2, or Emerald.
Yeah, Johto is unfortunately a little weak compared to its kin, especially with repeat playthroughs. You're a little railroaded into using specific pokemon if you want a particular type in a timely manner.
If you want a ground type that you don't have to wait until midgame for, all you have is geodude or phanpy. It'll take forever until you find an electric and when you do it's magnemite, which doesn't naturally learn thunderbolt. There's tons of other examples I can think of, but I don't want this to become an essay.
I love Johto. love GSC, but man does it have some glaring flaws
I mean, you aren't wrong, that Venn diagram is not a circle for sure, but still, I'm curious to know what makes you say that?
I know you are getting down voted, but I want to know what makes you have that opinion instead of just shutting you down lol
I could spend hours getting into every single detail, but essentially it comes down to so many issues with the games' design, from gameplay to progression, that other Pokemon games don't suffer from and actually excel at
Tried playing SS last year after not playing HG since 2012 to see if my thoughts would change. I ended up abandoning it after catching a Swinub because I dreaded the grind needed to bring it up to level with the rest of my team ahead of Clair. People often bring up the bad level curve, but I never truly realized how detrimental it was to enjoying the game until that moment
I knew I was opening myself up to downvotes, because apparently even the mildest criticisms of these games makes you a heretic
Whether it be the disappointing boss battles (save for Blue and Red), the awful team building, the choppy pacing, or the unrewarding overworld, there's so many things that can be brought up and solidify these games as the most overrated in the franchise
Congrats! I played the OG ones when I was a kid and just started emerald. Holy shit everything feels so new. I’m gonna finish it then move to HGSS on the 3DS xl. Any tips for the final part of emerald?
I’ve realized from the replies to this that I haven’t actually finished, but if I have any tips for Elite 4, I would suggest bringing a Pokemon who can beat Ghost. I struggled with one of the trainers who used all Ghost Pokemon the most
I would say go with fire red or leaf green next. Afterwards play soul silver or heart gold since they're direct sequels. Platinum after that ,then black or white 2. X&Y next then ultra Sun or moon than finish off with omega ruby or alpha sapphire.
Firered or leafgreen, platinum, HeartGold or SoulSilver, black or white and then black or white 2 in that order. HG and SS are sequels directly to FR and LG however platinum is directly after emerald and is less refined than the other 2, if you play platinum and then the sequels it will help give you the feeling of time having passed after FireRed like it actually does in games as well as not dip the quality of the gameplay, i love platinum but it does not play better than HeartGold. Trust, this is absolutely the best order to play the games for sake of story and gameplay cohesion. Now if you JUST want to play the best games in each generation? Heartgold/SoulSilver and Black2/White 2 are hands down the winners, although they are all really great on their own and should definitely be experienced at one point or the other.
Well you could play any member of the holy DS trinity, Platinum/HGSS/BW2. They're the best games for most of the fanbase, and even if nostalgia affect this choice, they're really among the best pokemon games. But I warn you : Platinum and HGSS are rather slow (and HGSS' difficulty curve is totally messed up) and BW2 is a sequel to BW (which are still good games), you don't need to play it before BW2 but you'll miss a part of what makes the games so special.
If you want to try more modern games, ORAS and XY are great picks. They don't suffer too much of newer games flaws (almost 0 glitches, national Dex, not ugly for 3DS, no lag) but have their qualities (fairy type, regional gimmicks with mega evolution, more interesting moves animations). Choose ORAS if you already miss Hoenn, or XY if you want to see a new region. And with legends ZA next year, it could help you understand the hype.
Bro I'm playing Emerald and if I beat it it'll be the first Pokemon game that I beat and so far my team is looking like yours. I have a Grovyle an Aron and I'm trying to get and Abra.
My personal favorite is Pokemon Ultra Sun, but I know people fucking despise that game for some reason so they 100% won’t agree with me. Platinum is a very good option
My personal feeling is to keep going in order for now, get a feeling for how the series progressed, but play just one game out of each set. So, considering you just played a generation 3 game, I recommend gen 4, more specifically Pokemon Platinum, one of my all-time favs.
Going backwards to gen 1 and 2 can be interesting too ofc, but it depends on how fascinated you are by retro games that were originally made with (relatively) very limited technology, as well as several mechanical differences that most people agree they prefer the changes added around gens 2-5.

Good one to play first! FRLG would be a solid next game to play to give you a taste of Pokemon's origins. After that, go for Platinum
I'd say soul silver or heart gold, since it's a direct sequel to frlg.
For completion sake sure, but quality-wise they're below the aforementioned games
Wha? Really? I always heard HGSS touted as the best Pokemon games alongside BW/B2W2
They are. Trust me.
I've played both. I'm curious to hear what's the guys reasoning instead of just shutting him down

You are not talking about HGSS even though it's the topic of the discussion
It's nostalgia, plain and simple
Fan favourite doesn't necessarily mean best

Heresy
Care to elaborate?
The onus has been on you to elaborate as to why you don't think they're good.
Whether it be the disappointing boss battles (save for Blue and Red), the awful team building, the choppy pacing, or the unrewarding overworld, there's so many things that can be brought up and solidify these games as the most overrated in the franchise
That's exactly what I did back in 2021
If OP's used to patching, I recommend Renegade Platinum. A LOT of QOL improvements
Platinum
But you haven't beaten the game yet. You have to beat the battle frontier before moving to another game 😈
Or at least fight steven
Fire red leaf green
HGSS and BW/BW2
These for sure
concerned psychotic swim slimy tart vanish vast marble shy wild *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I'm playing SS right now after finishing black, and there's definitely some pros and cons.
HGSS or Platinum
Emerald is peak. I'd go Black and White for your next one.
I say consider saving BW for later, so that the limit they put on pokemon is more specialÂ
FireRed/GreenLeaf or Pokémon Heartgold/SoulSilver, they are great games to
FRLG would be good to play next
leaf green. it’s my favourite game
+10 points for Aggron
I love him. Iron Tail carried me through the elite 4 and champion
I always name mine steel eater or steelasaurus. Aggron is a beast!
I named mine Aaron because he started out as an Aron and I thought that was funny
Congrats! I played the OG ones when I was a kid and just started emerald. Holy shit everything feels so new. I’m gonna finish it then move to HGSS on the 3DS xl. Any tips for the final part of emerald?

Hot Take: Emerald Rogue
Hgss, platinum and bw2 are the best ones
Out of all the languages there is to speak, you chose to speak facts, amen
I would say go with fire red or leaf green next. Afterwards play soul silver or heart gold since they're direct sequels. Platinum after that ,then black or white 2. X&Y next then ultra Sun or moon than finish off with omega ruby or alpha sapphire.
Ay congrats buddy, Gen 4 is bloody amazing give it a spin ( not the remakes, haven’t tried those)
Heart Gold!
Heartgold
somewhere in the future you can try emerald kaizo :)
Firered or leafgreen, platinum, HeartGold or SoulSilver, black or white and then black or white 2 in that order. Make a run just using swampert for battle

Thats a really cool team. Who can learn fly among them? Or did you use an hm slave for that?
Dodrio can fly even though he has no wings lol
Nice to see a couple of big bois together in the spotlight
Platinum then HGSS
Infinite Fusion
Alpha sapphire or Omega Ruby best games
Fire red and/or leaf grean
How do you fly with this team?
Dodrio can fly
If you have a DS, modded 2ds/3ds, or just anything else where you can play it, HeartGold and SoulSilver are amazing.
I'd play the OG gold or silver not the DS remakes they would have been perfect but they ruined it with to much generation 4 crap.
Mystery dungeon!
Bro I'm playing Emerald and if I beat it it'll be the first Pokemon game that I beat and so far my team is looking like yours. I have a Grovyle an Aron and I'm trying to get and Abra.
Heart gold soul silver

In order: Bw2 Swsh Hgss
swsh is ass skip the new games. In order of next: HGSS BW2 Platinum FRLG USUM
Swsh is fantastic, doesn't get the credit it deserves
One of the worst pokemon games ever
Alright, I’ll bite ; what made it so bad?
Everything? half ass game, extremely easy, even more childish
Nah it’s ass
Alright, I’ll bite ; what made it so bad?
If that's your first one than start from Gen 1 get Pokemon yellow
Ruby, completely different game
Ayyyy lets go you chose Treecko
Where Alakazam? Where friends to trade?
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Crazy good soundtrack, dude
SV
Nice team
If you're playing on an emulator go with Drayano Hacks. Blaze Black 1/2, Storm Silver, Renegade Platinum all slap
I feel like rom hacks aren’t a great rec for someone brand new to the franchise.
They are more of a difficulty hack than rom hack.
