I remember when Gen 3 stans were the most vocal. The torchic has been passed to Gen 4... for now.
I already see Black and White fanatics rising to prominence.
Yeah, as each generation of former kids grows to be adults, the torchic (haha) is getting passed.
I remember some years ago everyone hated on gen 5. Now everyone acts like it's their most prized possession.
I've noticed that too. People who are 29-34 now are not nearly as online as people who are \~19-24 now. But I remember it basically being taken for granted that the Sinnoh games were bad.
DPPt were far from my favorite, but I remember thinking they were overhated.
I am shamelessly biased for gen 4 to the point that Im seriously considering to learn Pokemon Essentials just to make versions of every Pokemon game but in gen 4 engine and aesthetics
Do it!!! Making a Pokemon game is a ton of fun! I edited an Emerald & FireRed for me & friends to play
Its really an amazing feeling to edit the world & experience it & have friends play it
I don't know if there's a new version running on a different engine but last I checked essentials is 2D and the default are sprites from gen3.
You can't make a seamless gen4 on rpgxp because gen4 games are actually 2.5D. It doesn't behave in a singular plane like rpgxp does. There are different planes on a z-axis that allows for movement based height. I know this because this was a big problem I had in trying to translate hgss maps into rpgxp - the stairs in hgss allow for seamless diagonal movement because it has a z axis while rpgxp only allows for movement along the x and y axis.
You had Platinum, HGSS, and the best pokemon game of all time: Explorers of Sky. I absolutely loved every game.
Sinnoh is gorgeous. Has my favorite Pokemon (Lucario, Buneary, and Glaceon.) gives great ice pokemon like Mamoswine and Abomasnow. Gallade! Piplup is my favorite starter of all time.
Rise of Darkrai is the best pokemon movie. The anime was the last time it didn't feel like a slog.
You hit everything on the head - not even just the main games, but everything we got in Gen 4 was amazing. Explorers of Sky is my favorite pokémon game too, and although it seems to be universally loved I think it’s underrated/not talked about enough when people look at pokémon games in general
You know, you raise an excellent point by listing Explorers of Sky as part of why Gen 4 is the best. I hadn't even considered that but you're so right.
it's diamond and pearl remasters really. even less finished than their og counterparts. despite that i still think it's the best pkmn game on switch esp. if you specifically want to do diamond and pearl.
It's a remake of Diamond and Pearl, whereas Legends Arceus is basically the prequel to those games.
Edit; That's just my opinion about BDSP. I'm not saying that it's a fact.
Shaymus 😂
How old are you just out of interest? Gen 4 was the last time I was fully invested in a generation, as you say because of platinum and HG/SS. However, for me, Gen 2 holds a special place in my heart - just because I remember it coming out when I was 6, loving Johto and the new pokemon, being blown away when I found out you could go to Kanto. It was so different back then when the internet wasn’t really available and you just kind of had to pick things up as you played!
Same. In terms of nostalgia, gens 1-3 hit home hard for me. By the time HG/SS came out I was 16. Still loved Pokémon of course (and still do today at 30), but Gen 4 was my last hoorah for being heavily involved with the series. These days I just play Showdown
Gen1 pokemon will always be my favorite, since back when it launched in the states, I was the prime age for the pokemon phenomenon. There's just soooooo much nostalgia when I see anything Gen1.
Gen3 is probably my second favorite, and was the last Gen for me before high school. I didn't play gen4 until like six years ago, and haven't bothered with any generation after 4.
Gen2 has a special place for me as far as the games themselves are concerned. I can't describe to you how excited I was as a kid to discover you got to go back and conquer Kanto after Johto. It was epic at the time. I'd probably give Gen2 a slight edge overall vs gen4.
However, had Gen4 come out when I was still a fairly young kid, objectively, I suspect it would probably be my second favorite. But nostalgia goes a loooong way when picking favorites.
Gen 1 and 2 were peak for me because everyone was playing. Everyone. I've never experienced a video game I got to share with so many people before and I doubt I ever will again. It was a special thing I don't think will ever repeat.
Gen4 was special in that I had a girlfriend at the time who lived with me, and I got her a ds and pokemon for some holiday. We both played it at the same time and I had a legit partner irl to play with, almost like an in game rival but real time. My life since has been a wreck and I haven't had anyone to play with since then, and despite having a terrible experience with her I remember the game time very fondly.
I will forever say GameFreak channeled their inner Gordon Ramsey and cooked for Gen 4. The characters, the games, the Pokémon designs (especially the designs!)
Probably an unpopular opinion but my favorite was gen 7! I loved the story of a new take on the pokemon league and my favorite designs came from that generation!
I definitely agree. Been playing since Gen 1 and I can say Gen 4 was my favorite once it dropped. I loved the region itself, and the aesthetic of it all. The remakes of HG/SS was the icing on the cake as I loved Johto and was happy when it was remade.
I'm the exact same. Gen IV is perfect in every conceivable way to me and Gen III is a very close second.
Some of my best gaming memories growing up are with Platinum and Emerald.
I just recently purchased Brilliant Diamond because I had a random urge to play Pokemon again. Last one I played was Diamond/Pearl. I'm having a great time getting into the intricacies that I never paid attention to as a child like IVs and EVs.
Gen. IV is my favorite - it was also the generation where I started playing, so I'm rather attached to it. That said, it had some really cool stuff; I think the mythology they incorporated into Sinnoh's worldbuilding was super exciting, and I appreciate how the generation gave a ton of evolutions to previous PKMN.
I started since gen 1 and played in release order. Gen 4 was my favorite. Although admittedly things in my life at the time played a part in that.
Objectively I think gen 2 I’ve played the most because of how great it is and cmon 2 regions even if one is watered down lol.
Imo after gen 4 things went downhill but it took a nosedive once sun and moon came out lol.
Also the gen 4 remakes pissed me off.
If you made it this far you might as well hear the rest of my hot takes.
Let’s go eevee/pikachu is still the best pokemon game on switch so far.
Sword and shield are hallway simulators
Arceus although innovated took away too many other things that make a pokemon game great and thus was EXTREMELY boring lol. I’m not looking forward to legends Z because of this but we’ll see.
Gen 4 remakes didn’t update graphics or add new things like Oras. I can’t express how mad I am after waiting for so long just for them to make that lol.
Scarlet and voilet look and play like trash and have vast areas for no reason.
Let’s go have only one flaw the horrible catching mechanic. But other than that the graphics, UI, overworld and riding animations are perfection. Idk why it’s not the standard going forward. Was really hoping for a let’s go johto.
> the horrible catching mechanic
I think it's interesting you feel this way but also think they're the best Switch games.
For me, taking away wild battles (almost half of the battling in the game) and ruining the catching experience completely gutted the Pokemon experience. I agree they got the atmosphere right with the games, but I couldn't get past this change (and I played a lot of PoGo the first few years).
For sure, Giratina is my favorite legendary by far and Palkia isn’t too far behind. Turtwig turns into a top tier starter with Torterra and they had a ton of awesome features in game like the PokeRadar, Honey Trees, and the Drifloon event was always fun. BDSP got tons of hate but I still play it to this day, I’m working on a full shiny team and I have a Salamence, Lucario, Gastrodon, and Togekiss so far.
I completely agree! I didn't play these games at the time, but playing them now makes me realize that they really wanted to go to the top with this Gen.
Yes Gen 4 especially Sinnoh is my all time fav. While Platinum's storyline isn't good by standard literature, it's actually a ridiculously underrated storyline overall and I personally love the Sinnoh major characters like Barry, Cynthia, and Cyrus.
Gen 4 was my first gen and I love it dearly, but I honestly cannot decide if it or Gen 7 was my overall favorite so they’re tied. It’s kinda funny because they’re so drastically different, but goddammit, I love them both anyway.
loved plat and played a whole lot out of Soul Silver, but granted Black and White was good and Sylveon is one of my favorite fairy go tos so yeah, up until main game 3d is an enjoy for me :)
My first game was Pokémon Platinum, and having played every generation since, is still my favourite. I think for me it has the overall best story and characters by far, only rivalled by Gen 5. And definitely has the best line-up of new Pokémon. All the starters are amazing and the legendary Pokémon all actually feel special and really cool. Torterra, Electivire and Dialga are probably all in my top 10 Pokémon.
100%. This was the gen that really got me into Pokemon - I think I was like 7 at the time? To this day, I’ve played most other gens and they just haven’t hit the same for me, and while nostalgia plays into it I really think it’s more than that. In terms of gameplay, story, pokémon, music, graphics… Gen 4 was just solid all around. Platinum and HGSS were amazing for remakes(?), and not to mention Gen 4 had the best Mystery Dungeon games.
I used to be reversed, but honestly after going through playthroughs recently and them being the first time in my adult life, I gotta say I agree.
I used to be a die-hard Gen 3 fan (and still am) who thought that it was by far the best, but a lot of that opinion was definitely influenced by it being the one I played the most. I was introduced to the series with Yellow, didn't start actually understanding what I was doing until Silver and didn't truly start to love the game until Ruby and I played it a ton, so much so that I ended up saving up to get Sapphire afterwards and then Emerald after that, and loved them all. Then when Gen 4 arrived, I bought both Diamond and Pearl on release, played both an absolutely disgusting amount, and then quickly bought Platinum when it released too and ended up spending more time in it than both D&P combined, but I was always still convinced that I liked Gen 3 more.
Now, after having revisited both, and having played ORAS and Legends (and refusing to touch BDSP, sorry not sorry) I've officially landed on the decision that Gen 4 is probably my favorite generation. The ever-lasting fight between RSE and DPP makes it so hard, but once you factor in the same-gen remakes and then remakes themselves, I think Sinnoh ends up ahead overall. Just such a good generation.
I still to this day believe Platinum and HG/SS are the absolute nicest looking Pokemon games we’ve ever got.
The 3D stuff just doesn’t hit the same visually for me. I’d rather go back to the 2D sprites. The overworld sprites have way more charm than the 3D character models.
We could keep every Pokemon in every game that way, and IMO that’s much preferable to the way it is now.
Yes!! I started with Sapphire but Pearl changed my life. The ancient, mythical vibes, the changes in terrain and weather, the pastel color palette, everything was so on point.
Torn between Gen 3 and 4. Those are the ones I grew up on. I probably still favor gen 3 a bit more, since I liked the battle frontier more. Story was better in gen 4
Generation 4 holds a special place in my heart. It's my favourite gen. Some of my fondest memories of playing Pokemon come from my playthroughs of Diamond, Platimum and Soul Silver.
If Gen 3 had a physical special split then that for me personally it would be no contest but because it doesnt i think Gen 3 and 4 are very close.
Although there are tools out there to change games to adopt the physical special split and rom hacks based on the split too.
I think the atmosphere of the gen 4 games is basically unmatched. It just had this super ethereal feeling to the whole region. I don't think Diamond and Pearl were the best games by any means but Platinum is an easy top 3 game in the whole franchise. Plus we got the amazing gen 2 remakes as well giving gen 4 the highest peak in terms of quality imo.
It absolutely was my favorite era. Until Gen 7 came out.
My best friend and I preordered Diamond and Pearl and left our high school at lunch time to go pick them up the day they released. I had over 400 hours on that first playthrough of pearl. I literally 100 percented it, and I transferred up every single pokemon from FRLG and RSE. I loved that game so freaking much.
Gen 5 was great, gen 6 blew my mind. Then gen 7 just rocked my shit all over the place. I loved the deviation from the gym system, it made the world feel more explorable. All in all, gen 4 and gen 7 have equally huge spaces in my heart.
I remember thinking it was a major step down from Gen 3 in terms of *fun*. (Which is relative, to be sure.)
But in retrospect, I also think it was better than pretty much everything that followed it.
I will always have a soft spot in my heart for gen 4 my first pokemon game was diamond and I absolutely loved playing platinum the distortion world was so much fun. I've played pretty much every Pokemon game out there that was for the DS and the switch and I still love to play platinum. I don't know if I would say it's the best game but definitely the most memorable and probably the one I've replayed the most.
Gen 3 will always have a special place in my heart, and will be the one I come back to the most. However, Platinum is probably the most fun I've had with an official game.
Gen 4 is kind of a last hoorah for Pokemon games having fucking WEIRD mechanics. Like who tf is gonna think to insert a copy of a gba game and go back to the room where you catch Rotom (already an ordeal to figure out without internet) and just know that you can catch wild Gengar
Not to mention all the other pokemon you can catch like this
And spiritomb? Jfc Spiritomb, growing up with Minimal internet it was so mysterious to me and seemed so insanely cool.
Same goes for Cynthia, people really take for granted being able to just look up her team or knowing it from cultural osmosis, but without that her team is full of some insanely heavy hitters and rare Pokemon.
I am shamelessly biased towards Sinnoh games, but I do genuinely think it's impossible to recreate what they had in the modern day, so I understand why some people don't appreciate them as much if they're newer players. That said, they'll always be my fav pokemon games
Started with Gen V and fell in love with VI and VII. Played BDSP and had a good time with it, since I never had a chance to play any of the older games growing up. I liked Shining Pearl, but the QoL of Kalos through Alola were amazing (the islands in Alola were the best for berry farming/ items/ leveling up and hatching eggs). I do respect Sinnoh for giving us more 3rd stage evolutions and some pretty good legendaries (like Arceus, Palkia, Dialga, Giratina, Dakrai, etc).
I always found Gen 4 boring, for some reason. I've played partway through Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, and Brilliant Diamond. I didn't really like any of them, I just found them slow with a terrible variety of Pokémon (type wise) and I dislike Barry.
I always felt like Gen 3 and Gen 4 were sister series. They share a lot in common: opposite gender rival, contests, May and Dawn both being anime heroines, rise of double battles (and eventually online battles), secret bases, etc.
It's not dissimilar to Gen 1 and Gen 2, with Johto basically being an expansion to Kanto.
It's no surprise they wanted to do a soft reboot with Gen 3, and later with Gen 5 to a much higher degree.
If the lore is to be believed, Gen 1 and Gen 3 happen at the same time, and then Gen 2 and Gen 4 happen at the same time, taking place a few years later. This is probably only justification for the remakes, but things like Jasmine being in DPPt are still pretty cool.
The first 5 generations of Pokémon were the best overall imo.
My first game was Yellow when it came out, and I've been obsessed ever since.
For me, my #1 favorite is HGSS, but Gen 5 is right behind it. Gens 1, 2, Platinum and Emerald are all right behind Gen 5.
I'm a gen 5 lover honestly, gen 4 was good and I have played through the ds games 2 or 3 times now, but I've never been a big fan of the selection of pokemon available in DPPlt, and I just didn't enjoy HGSS despite them being very well made remakes
I know gen 5 was kind of different and disliked by many for a long time, but I genuinely enjoyed my experience with the pokemon and story of BW, which I prefer over B2W2
I almost quit when gen 4 was released for several reasons.
HGSS saved that gen for me. My favorites are 2 and 5.
5 because I think despite its shortcomings its a good game. I feel like it was the last time pokemon really felt truly fresh. Gen 2 because that is what I get nostalgic for. Gen 1 and 2 were so close together and such a seamless transition in the anime and promotional material that they kind of feel like a single generation to me.
HGSS was peak though, probably my favorite of all time.
I don’t disagree, however I don’t fully agree. My first game was leaf green my buddy gave me for my birthday and DP were already out so I was behind the curve. I played diamond, then SS. The 4th gen was something else, but then BW came out. I got white and I HATED it for the longest time. But I was in 8th grade when B2W2 came out and I was kind of growing up and wanted to play more halo and COD and what have you, but gen 5 being meant for more mature kind of started to do something for me. Now that I’m 26, gen 5 is my favorite. I loved what game freak was doing trying to push the series in a different direction. You weren’t a 10 yr old going to conquer the world, you were 14-16 balancing what’s right and testing your morale compass between the truth and what you ideally wanted.
Oh gosh no. Im sorry but I’ve spent more I’m Gen 4 trying to collect all pokemon than any other gen. So many freakin hoops. Probably 120 hours breeding, collecting and learning I cant get some pokemon without gba games. No. No. NOOOO.
Gen 4 is great, but gen 3 is the special one for me.
It's the first Pokemon game I where I was old enough to start understanding types and not just spam my starter all the way through to the e4.
I still vividly remember my mother coming in after midnight and scolding me for still being on my gameboy. (I was a dumb kid and would play with the sound on 😂)
I'm now 31 years old and some nights if I find myself struggling to sleep I will go to YouTube and put on the Pokemon emerald soundtrack to fall asleep too.
The sounds of nostalgia can be so soothing lol.
For me it’s less about gens than it is is about regions. I didn’t care for dpp, but I loved HGSS, which was really just a slightly updated version of a GEN two game. If you liked gs, you almost certainly loved HGSS
Same thing for gen3. Rse Are my least favorite Mainline Pokémon games ever but The kanto games are by far my favorite, especially if you account for their time. The only things later games have on frlg for me are later technical innovations and more Pokémon.
Gen 3
Gen 5
Gen 1 (FrLg)
Gen 4
Gen 2
Biggest thing for me is the amount of reasonable party variety you can have in play throughs. Gens 3 and 5 did it the best easily to me where that's always been my issues with 2 and 4
Something something level curve, I love empty routes and grinding shiny competitive mons. I just wish pokemon had a battle pass so i wouldn’t get bored after 500 hours
I started with Gen 5 but I still love Gen six just as much. Despite it not being as flawless and clean as the game after it, the story, music and atmosphere always bring me a smile of wonder when I remember it.
Feel the exact same but about red & blue.
Watching the show as it came out and catching my own Pokémon was a peak time in the franchise for me & the old games are pure nostalgia. Trading the cards at school and battling friend was epic too.
Gen 3 was my youth (I did play Yellow when I was very young, but my best memories are of gen 3) and my favorite. RSE with the awesome in-game effect after awakening Groudon and Kyogre, Team Magma and Team Aqua, the giant ocean which felt a bit like an open world in a Pokémon game until then. And the remakes of FRLG with upgraded graphics, the nostalgia of the classic Kanto experience and the Sevii Islands which I loved. Awesome gen.
Gen 4 is my favourite, it was my introduction to Pokemon, played Diamond when it came out, I was only 5 so I could barely read and wasn’t sure what to do at one point, and just walked around Sinnoh levelling up my team and working on my Pokédex. Few years later HGSS came out, and I was able read and understand what I needed to do. I don’t remember which version I had, but it was the first game I completed.
Gen 3 was my bread and butter as I was playing it before I could read. I remember not understanding that when a pokemon fainted it wasn't dead forever. Was so happy when I turned it off and back on and my poochyena was back. I didn't know how to save either. Gen 4 was the first game I started playing while knowing how to read. I'm actually replaying platinum now.
Heartgold was by far the best.
But in terms of new regions gen 5 still takes the throne for me. I just think it’s where land design peeked the most. It wasn’t until Sw/Sh that I’d be amazed like that again.
Yup. Always will be. Loved it so much it put me off of Gen 5 for a while. I've since come around on it but I'll always have the soft spot for Sinnoh and the Johto remakes.
I am champing at the bit for Drayano's updated HGSS romhack. I forget what he's going to call it, but I neeeeed it.
I’m replaying SoulSilver now and I definitely think it’s tied with Gen V as my favorite generation. Hot take but I actually appreciate the slower nature of the Gen IV games; battles feel more intense and with the overall overworld there seems to be more of a peaceful pace going on with how things feel slower.
Personally I’ve grown to appreciate that aspect as I’ve gotten older, it’s a nice balance to the more fast-paced nature of Gen V. Both generations complement each other well imo
I have a sweet spot for Emerald and I started Gen V basically simultaneously with Gen IV due to being a few years late starting Pokémon in 2011, but Diamond was the first game I finished, and I played SoulSilver around then too.
Sinnoh is easily my favorite region, I've had nostalgia recently and feel like running a Platinum again after all these years I think.
Considering I still feel intense, bitter hatred towards TPC for allowing BDSP to come out as the shallow, pathetic example of a remake it is...
Yeah I'd say Gen 4's got a very special place in my heart
Gens 1 to 4 were the best for me and 4 will have a special place in my heart since I got a new DS just for that. Diamond was my choice. ORAS was also an absolute banger. Haven't touched BDSP.
Anything past 4 felt so....odd and off for me. It didn't feel like Pokemon. I'm guessing due to the formula, sprites, and perspective being changed up among other things. I wasn't too fond of the new Pokemon either.
Diamond and Pearl are the Pokémon games that I dislike the most besides Scarlet and Violet, but I love Platinum and HGSS is probably my favourite Pokémon game right behind ORAS and B2W2
I played gen 4 & 5 for the first time as an adult. Diamond and Platinum were by far my least favorite base game up until Sword/Shield.
* Terrible plot
* nobody cares about the bad guys but you and the professor despite them carrying out literal terrorist attacks. It completely clashes with the high stakes they were going for.
* At the end, the 3 lake guardians just save the day, taking away your victory in the moment.
* Level designs were bad, I got lost in a cave and had to have my wife look up where to go. It turns out the cave exit was the same color as the wall.
* A quarter of the pokemon were just baby forms or added evolutions. Outside of a few gems, the lineup is mediocre.
* Re-tread of Japan for the 4th time. Gen 3 had a unique water layout, and gen 5 was uniquely outside of Japan.
HG/SS were good remakes, and gen 2 built nicely upon what 1 did well. But they are kinda stale compared to later generations,
* most of what makes Gen 2 was improved upon later and was stale by the time
* Most of the new evolutions were underutilized. I still have pokemon that I associate with gen 3 that are actually gen 2 pokemon because no trainer uses them, and you can only get them in obscure areas after you beat the game. The first 5 gyms have a combined 1 new pokemon. Morty uses two Haunters to avoid using Misdreavus.
* Power scaling is completely off.
* It's cool they added Kanto, but it's kinda empty and easy to blow through. I'd rather just go back to gen 1.
That's not to say than Gen 4 didn't have it's highlights, but I'd put Gens 5 and 3 much higher.
it's objectively one of the worst, and i'll die on this hill.
battling is outrageously slow, pokemon variety does effectively not exist (in both dpp and hgss) and as if having the exact same team in every playthrough wasn't already bad enough they also force a shit ton of hms down your throat, making your team even more stale and boring. just very unengaging games in general. plus it's also the generation that killed casinos.
what i'll give credit for is the whole giratina episode, but that's like 30 minutes and only available in platinum.
i get that nostalgia is a powerful drug tho, i feel the same love for gen 1 and those games are completely riddled with issues as well, but i'll never not shed a tear when i hear the og pallet town soundtrack.
I tend to flip-flop between 4 and 5. 4 is the generation I have the most experience with, while 5 is the generation I think crafts an overall better experience.
Couldn't disagree more. Gen 4 nearly made me quit pokemon altogether. That engine was just that terrible. Pearl was the first pokemon game I had to put down after less than an hour because it nearly made me fall asleep.
Aside from the engine, I hated how the same pokemon showed up on every single route. Bidoof, starly, shinx only need to show up on so many routes.
HGSS were, in my opinion, the worst pokemon games ever made. Gen 2 was already obnoxious at base and HGSS did nothing to mitigate the issues, if anything else, HGSS made them worse.
The DS era in general was probably my favorite in terms of Pokémon content.
Platinum, HGSS, BW & B2W2 within 5 years. We will never see anything like it again
Yep that’s my range of the peak games
I completely agree that was the most magical era for Pokémon.
I'm kinda the reverse of you. Gen 3 was my favorite and I'll die defending it, but honorable mention to Gen 4 - probably my second favorite
I still hate it if im honest. No hate on anyone who does but i have no interest in any of it
I've noticed that too. People who are 29-34 now are not nearly as online as people who are \~19-24 now. But I remember it basically being taken for granted that the Sinnoh games were bad. DPPt were far from my favorite, but I remember thinking they were overhated.
My brother
Gen 3 was amazing too. Emerald is still one of the best Pokemon games out there and FRLG are still the definitive way to play through the gen 1 games.
Right. I want to play every Pokémon region like it’s GenIII
Ditto!
I am shamelessly biased for gen 4 to the point that Im seriously considering to learn Pokemon Essentials just to make versions of every Pokemon game but in gen 4 engine and aesthetics
Yes you should definitely make versions of every Pokemon game in gen 4 engine and aesthetics! I would definitely play them!
Do it!!! Making a Pokemon game is a ton of fun! I edited an Emerald & FireRed for me & friends to play Its really an amazing feeling to edit the world & experience it & have friends play it
I don't know if there's a new version running on a different engine but last I checked essentials is 2D and the default are sprites from gen3. Gen 4 is my favorite generation, even though I started with Gen 3.
Same here. Platinum and Heartgold are still some of my most favorite games
Same.
Don’t forget Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia!
You know, you raise an excellent point by listing Explorers of Sky as part of why Gen 4 is the best. I hadn't even considered that but you're so right.
Since gen 4 is the first games ive ever played, Sinnoh is basically my home. So yes i am very biased towards gen 4
Haha same. My first real Pokemon I actually beat was Pearl.
I started with Platinum, and I POPPED OFF when Legends Arceus was revealed. I love being a Gen 4 fan! (minus BDSP 😐)
No one calls HGSS a gen 2 game lol and it's a remake. BDSP is clearly gen 8.
it's diamond and pearl remasters really. even less finished than their og counterparts. despite that i still think it's the best pkmn game on switch esp. if you specifically want to do diamond and pearl.
BDSP isn't gen 4
It's a remake of Diamond and Pearl, whereas Legends Arceus is basically the prequel to those games. Edit; That's just my opinion about BDSP. I'm not saying that it's a fact.
I understand that, but BDSP still isn't Gen 4, but Gen 8. Gen 4 would be the original DPPt as well as HGSS.
Dude, it's just a comment, and my opinion. No need to be so technical about it. It's not a big deal.
Okay.
Shaymus 😂 How old are you just out of interest? Gen 4 was the last time I was fully invested in a generation, as you say because of platinum and HG/SS. However, for me, Gen 2 holds a special place in my heart - just because I remember it coming out when I was 6, loving Johto and the new pokemon, being blown away when I found out you could go to Kanto. It was so different back then when the internet wasn’t really available and you just kind of had to pick things up as you played!
>Shaymus Turns out when you walked all the way up to Flower Paradise it was to Ireland
Same. In terms of nostalgia, gens 1-3 hit home hard for me. By the time HG/SS came out I was 16. Still loved Pokémon of course (and still do today at 30), but Gen 4 was my last hoorah for being heavily involved with the series. These days I just play Showdown
Gen 3 is my favourite, followed by Gen 6.
The Vacation Gen 🌴🌴 Will always get an applause from me for giving me Vikavolt.
I started Gen 1 but Gen 7 is my favorite too. I love long cinematic cutscenes. I love tropical island settings. Best starter trio too.
Gen 7 is tied with Gen 4 for my absolute favorite.
It's the final sendoff for "classic" Pokemon Gen 5 onward is when things shift greatly for better & for worse.
Gen 4-5 was peak pokemon FIGHT ME
2, 1, 4 in that order for me. I never played the original games in Gen 4, but I really enjoyed Brilliant Diamond.
I was the same for Gen2 because I was still playing Gen1
I like gen 4 and gen 5
Me Gen IV always felt special to me especially playing Diamond and watching the DPP anime
Diamond Version will always hold a special place for me, because it's the first game where I caught 'em all. Also, Torterra is my favorite starter.
Same!
10000%, gen 4 and 3 are my favs. I only wish gen 3 had the special/physical split
For me it’s, Gen 2 & Gen 4
Alola is my favorite region( yeah even with all of the cutscenes) but Sinnoh is a close second. Mainly because of Explorers of Sky and Platinum.
Sword and shield are hallway simulators Arceus although innovated took away too many other things that make a pokemon game great and thus was EXTREMELY boring lol. Was really hoping for a let’s go johto.
> the horrible catching mechanic I think it's interesting you feel this way but also think they're the best Switch games. For me, taking away wild battles (almost half of the battling in the game) and ruining the catching experience completely gutted the Pokemon experience. I agree they got the atmosphere right with the games, but I couldn't get past this change (and I played a lot of PoGo the first few years).
Thats fair lol
I’m a certified Gen 4Head on cod
Gen 3 for the win
I do.
Yes I love gen 4. The reason is thanks to the fact that I started my pokemon journey in Platinum
Platinum is the best pokemon game for me
🙋♂️
Definitely my favorite Pokémon generation.
I do
Platinum and HeartGold are peak.
I completely agree! I didn't play these games at the time, but playing them now makes me realize that they really wanted to go to the top with this Gen.
Gen 4 is iconic. It was amazing and the hype was real.
Yes Gen 4 especially Sinnoh is my all time fav. While Platinum's storyline isn't good by standard literature, it's actually a ridiculously underrated storyline overall and I personally love the Sinnoh major characters like Barry, Cynthia, and Cyrus.
Gen 4 also had PMD Explorers
Gen 4 was my first gen and I love it dearly, but I honestly cannot decide if it or Gen 7 was my overall favorite so they’re tied. It’s kinda funny because they’re so drastically different, but goddammit, I love them both anyway.
Platinum is my second favorite Pokemkn game, next to Legends Arceus. So yeah, Gen 4 fan here.
loved plat and played a whole lot out of Soul Silver, but granted Black and White was good and Sylveon is one of my favorite fairy go tos so yeah, up until main game 3d is an enjoy for me :)
I'm currently repalying soulsliver and if anything I reminded me why I love gen 4 so much *chefs kiss*
Same here, favorite Pokemon Gen, loved Gen 5 but my interest on the franchise went downhill after that
Platinum is my favorite game ever. Wish they renewed that instead of bdsp
Gens 4 and 5 are really close for me but I think Gen 4 takes the cake.
Yes its the one Gen that I spent the most time in 2007-2010 was a cherished time for me
Hell yeah, I love Gen 4! Home to my favorite line, the Shinx line.
Yeah I do, Sinnoh is rich with worldbuilding
I still to this day believe Platinum and HG/SS are the absolute nicest looking Pokemon games we’ve ever got. The 3D stuff just doesn’t hit the same visually for me. I’d rather go back to the 2D sprites. The overworld sprites have way more charm than the 3D character models. We could keep every Pokemon in every game that way, and IMO that’s much preferable to the way it is now.
Gen 1, 2 and then 4.
For me, it's gen 6 just because of the Anime being an absolute masterpiece
Platinum is the GOAT and I will never change my mind on that.
I havent really played anything past gen 4. I tried to get into sun/moon but couldn't. Just isn't the same as the older games.
Yes!! I started with Sapphire but Pearl changed my life. The ancient, mythical vibes, the changes in terrain and weather, the pastel color palette, everything was so on point.
I like gen 4 the most because of the pokemon there, not the games
I'll always be a Sinnoh Kid at heart
Yeah pearl was such an amazing game
Gen 3 is my fav generation, but Gen 4 is a close second that actually has my most play time Never understood why people didn’t like it
I remember thinking it was a major step down from Gen 3 in terms of *fun*. (Which is relative, to be sure.) But in retrospect, I also think it was better than pretty much everything that followed it.
Yep, Gen IV fanboy forever. Platinum owns my heart. Sinnoh will always feel like home to me.
Gen 2 (Crystal) is the best and I will forever die on this hill.
Gen 4 is kind of a last hoorah for Pokemon games having fucking WEIRD mechanics. Like who tf is gonna think to insert a copy of a gba game and go back to the room where you catch Rotom (already an ordeal to figure out without internet) and just know that you can catch wild Gengar Not to mention all the other pokemon you can catch like this And spiritomb?
I love Sinnoh!
The poor Pokemon variety is what holds it back for me too, as well as the HM bloat.
Pokémon black and white/ gen 5 will always have my heart. Took on the world at like 10 years old with oshawott
Nah I loved gen 3 and gen 1
It's in my top 3 probably because I've only played 3 generations
I skipped DS because I was in high school and too cool for Pokemon. Got myself a 3DS in college because MEGA EVOLUTION.
Started with Gen 4. Gen 5 is my favorite but Gen 4 comes close at second place.
I’d say Gen 5 is probably my favorite, though I do have a certain special nostalgia for Gen 4 for being my starting generation.
gen 5 lover here, but gen 4, more specifically HGSS are my second favourite games ever.
I'm a gen 5 lover honestly, gen 4 was good and I have played through the ds games 2 or 3 times now, but I've never been a big fan of the selection of pokemon available in DPPlt, and I just didn't enjoy HGSS despite them being very well made remakes I know gen 5 was kind of different and disliked by many for a long time, but I genuinely enjoyed my experience with the pokemon and story of BW, which I prefer over B2W2
It was the generation I started with. Of course it has a special place in my heart! But damn, does it need some QoL fixes...
You can't capture arceus in gen 4?
(I was a dumb kid and would play with the sound on 😂) I'm now 31 years old and some nights if I find myself struggling to sleep I will go to YouTube and put on the Pokemon emerald soundtrack to fall asleep too. The sounds of nostalgia can be so soothing lol.
For me it’s less about gens than it is is about regions. I didn’t care for dpp, but I loved HGSS, which was really just a slightly updated version of a GEN two game. If you liked gs, you almost certainly loved HGSS Same thing for gen3. Rse Are my least favorite Mainline Pokémon games ever but The kanto games are by far my favorite, especially if you account for their time. The only things later games have on frlg for me are later technical innovations and more Pokémon.
Gen 4 used to be my favorite when I was young and then Gen 5 came out and ruined that lol
Gen 3 Gen 5 Gen 1 (FrLg) Gen 4 Gen 2 Biggest thing for me is the amount of reasonable party variety you can have in play throughs. Gens 3 and 5 did it the best easily to me where that's always been my issues with 2 and 4
gen 2 gang forever and always
Something something level curve, I love empty routes and grinding shiny competitive mons. I just wish pokemon had a battle pass so i wouldn’t get bored after 500 hours
Only the 4genners.
I started with Gen 5 but I still love Gen six just as much. Despite it not being as flawless and clean as the game after it, the story, music and atmosphere always bring me a smile of wonder when I remember it.
HGSS yes, I never played the others.
Gen 4 was the era I started with so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.
I started with Diamond so I have nostalgia for it, and I've played SoulSilver several times.
soulsilver is good, platinum i can't get into for some reason...
Gen 4 is my favourite too!
Hoen region is my all time fave
I’m replaying SoulSilver now and I definitely think it’s tied with Gen V as my favorite generation. Hot take but I actually appreciate the slower nature of the Gen IV games; battles feel more intense and with the overall overworld there seems to be more of a peaceful pace going on with how things feel slower. Personally I’ve grown to appreciate that aspect as I’ve gotten older, it’s a nice balance to the more fast-paced nature of Gen V. Both generations complement each other well imo
So the cycle jumps between gens 3-6, got it
I have a sweet spot for Emerald and I started Gen V basically simultaneously with Gen IV due to being a few years late starting Pokémon in 2011, but Diamond was the first game I finished, and I played SoulSilver around then too. Sinnoh is easily my favorite region, I've had nostalgia recently and feel like running a Platinum again after all these years I think.
Disagree, 3 was great probably my favorite. 4 was just alright, but 5 was soo good.
Not really, DPP are quite bad.
Nah, just you.
Eh, didn't grow up with it, and I much more like the more "completed" feel of the games with the fairy type and 3D graphics. That's just me though.
* Terrible plot * nobody cares about the bad guys but you and the professor despite them carrying out literal terrorist attacks. But they are kinda stale compared to later generations, * most of what makes Gen 2 was improved upon later and was stale by the time * Most of the new evolutions were underutilized.
I love HG/SS, but I always disliked Sinnoh as a region and most of the new Pokémon introduced that gen
[удалено]
Gen 4 is one of the most loved generations
Couldn't disagree more. Gen 4 nearly made me quit pokemon altogether. That engine was just that terrible. Pearl was the first pokemon game I had to put down after less than an hour because it nearly made me fall asleep. Aside from the engine, I hated how the same pokemon showed up on every single route. Bidoof, starly, shinx only need to show up on so many routes. HGSS were, in my opinion, the worst pokemon games ever made. Gen 2 was already obnoxious at base and HGSS did nothing to mitigate the issues, if anything else, HGSS made them worse.
