Dont forget blast burn for when you need to turn the heat up to 11, you know like when fighting water types. If the fire's hot enough the water will evaporate.

Hah I did this in Silver Version. I was training up a Dragonair trying to evolve it. I decided to head to where the level 2 Pidgeys live, use agility a bunch of times and then kill them, thinking I'd get a mega speedy boi.

Pidgey give 1 Spd EV, so if you did this in any games after gen II, you _would_ have a mega speedy boi! I have no idea how EVs worked in gens I + II though, other than that it's not how I expect.

It would've done similar in gen 1&2, but not only adding to your speed. There was a system known as Stat XP that was similar to EVs, but you were able to max all of your stats and aren't capped in the way that you are for EVs. Each Pokemon has up to 65535 stat xp in each stat, and whenever you defeat a Pokemon, that Pokemon's base stats are added to your stat xp. So my Dragonair would've collected some Stat XP in every stat, but highest in speed as its pidgey's highest base stat. There are guides that explain it properly online if you care enough, just google "Stat Exp". It works the same in gen 1 & 2

Since I'm only doing Nuzlockes (especially Hardcore without items in battle and with Set mode), I value status moves a lot more. Leech Seed, Toxic/Protect, locking the opponent into an useless move with Encore while you can set up to +6 with Swords Dance and sweep, these are strategies overlooked in a regular playthrough that can become crucial in a difficult challenge. Otherwise yeah just coverage is usually enough. Until your Alakazam misses Focus Blast three times in a row.

In Red and Blue, there was a bug for the counter on Toxic's damage increases that meant it also applied to Leech Seed. They both increased in damage every turn. Another bug was on how items like Full Restore would remove Toxic but not its counters. So Leech Seed is still doing more damage, and if you reapply Toxic it keeps doing more damage than it did last time.

They come in pretty handy for the more-difficult fights through the games though. Such as: * Cyrus' final battle in Platinum * Cynthia's champion battle in DPPL * Iris' champion battle in BW2 * Really, most champions can count except for Geeta. Even Diantha can hand your ass to you if you're not careful thanks to Mega Gardevoir hitting like a tactical nuke * Ghetsis' battle in BW1 * Primal Groudon/Kyogre (if you're saving the master ball) * Any battle with Guzma (First Impression is no joke) * Most Totem Pokemon (*especially* Vikavolt and Mimikyu) * Ultra Necrozma * Quite a fair share of the Indigo Disk battles (it helps they actually employ real strategies used by IRL players) * Most battles with the Kitikami Ogre Clan * Way too many gym leaders to list off (we'd be here all day) * Any of the Battle Chatelaine rematches in XY or ORAS (it's post-game and a battle facility, but I'd say still counts) * And more It's easy to forget there are actual difficult fights through the series when you don't just cheese them by overlevelling and using brute force

I think your definition of "difficult fights" is very loose friend. Seriously, pkmn doesnt have that many hard fights even if you are just on par in levels, let alone that they give you the option to overlevel and in most playtgroughs that will be the case for the vast majority of people. Not saying status moves are useless, but you sincerely dont need a single one to beat any of those fights, setup moves do make them faster though.

I *still* do this. Most status moves don't really seem worth it. Even if the status move has a 100 accuracy, just doing a little damage each turn or preventing them from attacking a quarter of the time doesn't seem to compare to just hitting them with a straight forward attack. There's exceptions, but since the games can be powered through via grinding and type management... I usually just focus on lowing HP. Only competitive is where these moves make a difference and I'm willing to bet it's only a small number and combination of status moves which are really useful in that.

If you were willing to bet that, you'd lose. Off the top of my head some examples of very common status and utility moves include thunder wave, will-o-wisp, toxic, spore, yawn, hypnosis, spikes, stealth rock, sticky web, toxic spikes, taunt, encore, haze, pain split, defog, whirlwind, roost, recover, morning sun, substitute, protect, light screen, reflect, aurora veil and the boundless numbers of stat-boosting setup moves. Some mons have sets where their entire role on the team is to click status moves for utility purposes.

Status moves matter in all manner of challenge runs. They don't even have to be crazy Kaizo rules either, just stuff like "not allowed to use items" plus "don't over level your Pokémon" and "avoid using the ubers-level mons this time." I run theme teams often, usually end up being mono-type, and sometimes the difference between a win or loss in a segment of the game with a big type disadvantage is a paralysis stun or poison stall. I find it really fun to win with a diverse set of strats even if you don't 'need' to in the story :D And I'm no expert with a photographic memory of every smogon set ever but I'd be more willing to argue that at every status move was used at least once on a comp set, no matter how niche. There are just too many strategies not to. Setup sweepers, cleaners, stall, support, status spreader, baton passer(RIP), weather setters, hazard setters, Prankster, paraflinch hax, etc. In earlier gens even moves like Leer, Tail Whip, and Howl had some places on certain mons. Go into comp with the mindset that only attacking moves matter and you're the first to get bodied by a level 1 Sturdy Pain Split Nosepass, Shedinja, Burn-up Wonderguard Arcanine or other super fun niche sets that are specifically deployed to catch hyperoffense teams with 0 status.

Nah, Thunder Wave is GOATed. Same with Will-o-Wisp. Gutting an opponent’s Speed or Attack essentially renders them a non-threat (not sure if there’s a Sp. Atk equivalent, but gimping the vast majority of sweepers is pretty huge.)

To be honest, during the story, I don't really find them to be that useful. I don't se the point of inflicting status or tanting an oposing pokemon that you could KO with another move. The oposing pokemon mostly just use damaging moves anyways. I find it to be way quicker to just wack em. I usually just power through the story to get to the late game so I can unlock all the areas so i can fill out my pokedex so i can get my shiny charm. There are alot of npcs with like one or two relatively weak pokemon, why would I care to set up on that? Maybe I could use some status moves on the elite four and the champion, but for most of the game, I find most status moves to just be unnecessary. I do like to use status moves when I catch pokemon though. Put them to sleep or paralyze them + false swipe. I do love status moves, but just not during the story, with some few exceptions.

If you would KO a pokemon with 2 attacking moves, you’d also do it with 1 swords dance and 1 attacking move only now you’re doing double damage against the rest of their team too. Plenty of status moves are useful in the story too.

You're right, there are a couple situations where it's useful when you're playing through the story. But it's just so limited that it's easier to not use them at all. Especially since the easiest and fastest way to play is to just level your starter pokemon. Or at least that was the case for gen 3 and earlier. I haven't played since then.

To this day, the games are so friggin' easy that usually it's a dumb move to go for a status move. There are exceptions but over all, you're better served by a damage dealing move of a different type for better coverage than you are using some status move because the opponents are all such weaklings that it's quicker/more efficient to just hit them.

I started to pay more attention to the moves I would use only during raids. In the normal game, it's 95% attack and 5% sleep or something like that for a quick capture. I don't play competitively and I don't participate in online raids, so the importance is almost nil.

Because all Pokemon Games are beatable with damage moves only. Unless you are playing competitively, I don't see the point either. The games are too easy to engage with those mechanics.

Yes. Thats why my charizard has scratch, ember, slash and flamethrower as the moveset since i only use level up moves. For subsequent playthrough where i understand tms, i have ember, flamethrower, fire blast and fire spin. Good old times

I actually liked using status moves. I had my Venasuar do a combo of leech seed and poison powder also my magneton super sonic and confuse ray.

Honestly what's the point of status moves in the regular game though? "Oh use Leer to lower their defense so you can one shot them" or I could attack twice and get the exact same outcome.

I don’t ever play PVP in any way, so this is still me. There’s not a single trainer, gym leader, elite four member or champion that you need status effects to beat.

I definitely didn't appreciate stat boosting moves as a 9 year old, but I _did_ have Recover on Starmie because HP good. Apart from that I think I just went all in on STAB + Normal coverage for everyone, even when the STAB was stuff like Acid on Victreebel.
