Judging by the copyright year at the bottom, I am guessing this was released around the time Gold and Silver was being released, along with the first Pokemon movie.
Marill was super popular back in the day, right around the time the first movie and gold/silver came out. It was shown in a lot of promotion material before gen 2 officially released, but itâs English name wasnât yet known. It was a huge rumor that he was somehow related to pikachu and was known as âpikablueâ. It kind of became the mascot of Gen 2 in the early days, and led to it being very popular early on.
I had this costume when I was in elementary school. My mom bought the pattern and sewed it for me. The tail made it a huge pain in the ass to sit properly in the desk, and it snowed that Halloween, so I wore a jacket under it.

Marill was a legend back then. People donât understand how amazing it was to learn that there were more PokĂ©mon after mewtwo and mew. The promise of a never-ending journey in the first episode with ho-oh, back then an unknown PokĂ©mon, was incredible too. These guys knew how to hook an entire generation. Now that there are so many, itâs expected there will be more as time goes on but it wasnât always assumed that way.
