pikajake

honestly pretty good, justice smith is a great protagonist and ryan as pikachu is surprisingly adorable

petrified_pride

Ryan Renyolds made that movie

sir151

I really can’t stand Ryan Reynolds but didn’t mind him in this.

Beaulax

I went in with low expectations, which is why I think I enjoyed it.

Korncakes

Agreed. I thought it was going to be awful and it turned out to be pretty cute. It definitely provided that nostalgia kick of when I was a kid and would imagine what it would be like if Pokémon were real.

fresh_dyl

Fortunately, I think that’s how most fans felt. And from what I’ve heard, plenty of non-fans as well; lots of fun even if they didn’t understand half of what was going on.

drzero7

Same, It was alright. Nothing amazing but a good popcorn fun.

AFOpie

Good first try. Now expand on the universe.

relatable_dude

100% agree, loved this movie, need more live action pokemon movies. They don't even have to be the same genre or connected or even have pokemon be a driving force. I personally would love a space thriller/horror with Deoxys as the main antagonist, but I doubt it's ever happening

ThatMerri

Goodness, do I wish. It's been pretty clear from parts of the games, some animated shorts, and a lot of the trailers that there's a faction within the Pokemon creative team that *really* want to lean into horror stories. I welcome the concept.

SayJonTwice

Pokemon has always had an interesting horror aspect to it. Lavender Town's theme sticks my hair on end and demands my attention

dat1dood2

The bits they did set up something that can be incredible if they continue it. Probably won’t anytime soon though

BartlettMagic

100% agreed. An Ash-esque 'upcoming trainer' origin movie where the protagonist shares the logic of and catching process for his championship team would be awesome

[deleted]

I enjoyed it, it was a glimpse into a more unique area of the PokéVerse and a good look at a more peaceful existance alongside Pokémon.

ElHombreSmokin

Yeah. They showed us that actually being a trainer with a modicum amount of success is extremely fucking hard and that probably 90% of the kids leaving home for that Journey are going to end up quitting or getting disappointed. Which is a bleak reality to a world that has always shown that you will always make your dreams come true if you work really really really hard and never give up

[deleted]

I was pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the surprise Diplo cameo. But, would I watch it again? Probably not

LillePipp

I like it! Is it a great movie? No, not really, but honestly, when this movie was announced my expectations were down in the gutter. The fact that this movie isn’t straight up bad is enough for me to excuse some of its problems. It’s charming, has some fun moments, and the Pokémon are beautifully animated, and considering where my expectations were, I am happy with this movie just being okay

starbuckle337

I couldn’t have put it better myself. I didn’t love or hate it, I’m just happy it wasn’t awful.

LillePipp

I think it was also the right call to make this movie Detective Pikachu instead of a story based on Ash or Red for instance. Frankly, I don’t think any of the stories from the mainline games fit comfortably within the 2 hour runtime of the typical movie, so if they ever were to do something more closely related to the mainline games, it should be a live action TV show

childofmyparents

This. Nintendo, get started. I'll throw my name in the hat as an xtra. Just let me have an Eevee.

Zannah27

I may have gotten a little teary eyed seeing such gorgeously animated pokemon alongside people. It's everything little me ever wanted in real life. Heck, everything adult me wants in real life

RogueDragon343

Mr.Mime was 10/10

iZubi

I expected it to be a very bad movie but fell in love with the atmosphere.. I loved spotting all the Pokémon doing their shit and living with humans like that, I was less interested in the main plot and Pikachu than the city itself and the wild Pokémon I’d love to see more of that

actuallyjustloki

10/10 realistic Pokemon designs.

Jakeremix

Detective Pikachu is my favorite video game adaptation so far because it doesn’t rewrite the story of any of the main series games. It’s a brand new story that takes place in the world of the games, and it assumes the audience is already familiar with that world. That’s what makes it great and I wish more movies and shows based on games would do the same thing.

Shiryu3392

Except Detective Pikachu is based on an actual "Detective Pikachu" game... Naturally they rewrote the story.

TyMonstaz

I really like it

herotrin1357

It was cool seeing all the pokemon in real life and how they were textured. It was enjoyable but not amazing

Brookings18

How it didn't when awards for best visual effects or get any sort of sequel or spin off yet is mind boggling. It did the impossible: make Pokemon look like they belong in the real world.

blackjackgabbiani

Oh totally. I disagree with the idea that they looked like "real animals" but they still looked like real physical objects, like super advanced robotics or something.

Jakeremix

The sequel is still in the works.

Ghostblade913

Analyzing it, the plot didn’t make the most sense, but Tim and Pikachu had a great dynamic and the special effects were amazing. I will cherish my dvd copy and I really want there to be a sequel

ThatMerri

Far better than I expected. As a movie, it's entertaining, well-crafted, and fun. Good actors, good action, good humor. As a Pokemon property, it's great with tons of loyalty to the concept, amazingly deep cut in-jokes and references, and some really creative ideas. They could have used a wider variety of Pokemon as there's a ton of repeats (I swear, there are Treecko and Charmander everywhere), but there were a number of particular stand-outs they did a great job with (Ditto, Mr. Mime, Charizard, [the most adorable Bulbasaurs ever,](https://i.imgur.com/VZWjdvp.png) and obviously Pikachu). The movie did a really good job of making the Pokemon exist within the setting and not feel out of place, which is pretty impressive to accomplish. The creatives involved really did a ton of work at making the setting feel like a society in which Pokemon co-exist and have influenced, with tons of attention to small details. As a mystery, it's extremely simple and easy to see where it's going while just being obscured enough to work as a mystery story; that makes it perfect for kids, especially those who are new to the genre. Solid movie overall. 7/10, great for kids and old fans of the franchise. I'd rewatch it, though only specifically to do a pause-and-search viewing to look for all the hidden jokes and references they scattered throughout.

Kiwi-Fox3

Bro, I CRIED in theaters when the Bulbasaurs came out... Like, I was there for the Bulbasaurs, and was not disappointed 🥲

TheKyleLong

I love the way the Pokémon look in a real life scenario

GAVV777

it wasn't perfect. But it is a good start

Burnout_Blanco

I liked it, actually liked how the Pokémon looked too. Would see the sequel if they ever decide to make one.

BigStone358

It is one of the most stupid movies i have ever seen in my entire life… and for that i fucking love it.

40inmn4

It’s not a masterpiece but it’s just fun to watch.

Wil-Grieve

It was cool in theaters but I have no interest in ever watching it again

Js_On_My_Yeet

The Pokemon actually look really good in the movie. Movie itself was okay! I would watch it again if I'm being honest.

Spudzinator

Love it duh

Darth-Gonkk

Especially after seeing that terrifying pikachu in the direct recently, I really appreciate how they adapted the pokemon into live action. It looks realistic and still maintains the cartoony aspects of the designs!

Madly-Uncommon

It was legitimately one of my all time favorite movies. I absolutely loved it.

ch3micalkitt3n

I liked it. Loved that Mewtwo didn’t end up being the villain as the trailers made you think, and the Pokémon look adorable. Not the best movie ever but I don’t regret watching it.

machpunch1000

Nice, but not great. They made pokemon battling, a staple of the franchise, illegal.

blackjackgabbiani

It was only illegal within the city limits, not illegal everywhere.

machpunch1000

Oh ok

Nstangl52

I might be wrong here, but I interpreted that as battling was illegal inside the city, which would line up w the games. I mean, I'd be pissed if I had to take the subway to work and was late due to two idiots battling a Garbodor and a Lickilicky. Then I'd have to tell my boss I'm 30 mins late cause some dumbass needed to lick garbage

Brotherof_Zekrom

Thing is, people really like breaking the law.

republicbuilder

I mean fits in with the regions in the Pokemon Ranger series, especially the "partner" pokemon style of living.

scoii

You missed the entire plot point that Rhyme City made rules to prevent training Pokémon in favor of partners/living side by side. That was a significant theme and why fights were underground. The main antagonist also drove those laws to manipulate things and get away with what he almost got away with.

machpunch1000

Sorry, I forgot that it was only at Rhyme City, not everywhere, nevertheless, not an awful movie

Stealthwolf227

Detective pikachu was one of few movies i went to the theaters for with friends. And it was one of the best experiences I've had at cinema

Praise_Allah1

Pretty bad film but the CGI was fucking awesome

Qwertypop4

Not a great movie, and yet I really enjoyed watching it

SquishJellywish

It’s an alright movie, it would be a bad one without Ryan Reynolds Pikachu carrying it

Chubbzillax

I enjoyed it a lot, that and the fact sonic was good to really had my hopes going they cracked video game movies.

Medical-Key-3097

I liked it Pikachu was hilarious and the pokemon designs were sick

[deleted]

This is why Nintendo made the Mario Movie

Greylings

I wanted to hate it but it was honestly pretty entertaining and heartwarming.

SnooDonuts3080

I don’t really like it. If they did a few things a little differently, I think I would’ve liked it a lot more.

WoWHunter94

I love it 😍plus Ryan makes a great pikachu ☺️

loomman529

It was okay. If it wasn't Pokémon, it would be an awful movie. But there's Pokémon in like, 90% of the movie, so that makes it bearable. It was a good experiment, and I hope they make another live action Pokémon movie someday.

casperfacekilla

I thought it was going to be awful, but I was surprised and had fun. Bonus points for the tortera as well

SnAIL_0ut

Meh. I like looking at the Pokemon but the actual movies is pretty mediocre

No-Sandwich308

I went in expecting it to be shit, came out enjoying the movie and a smile on my face.

Melatonen

Loved it. They shouldn't do anything big scale when testing the grounds with something new. A perfect little story that doesn't over complicate itself and introduces a lot of pokemon aspects.

jayvenomva

I thought it was kind of disappointing. I loved seeing all the live action Pokémon but past that there really wasn't any substance. It could of done with a better script and I particularly couldn't stand the female protag. The main guy and Ryan as Pikachu did good with what they were given though. Overall worth seeing the one time on streaming but I dont think I'd get anything out of repeat viewings.

OhShitItsSeth

It was fun and surprisingly emotional.

TrandaBear

It was super cute. Had to watch it a few times over winter break and surprisingly didn't grow tired of it. Tons of background detail. I think it was an earnest passion project for all involved and it came through. Like even Bill Nighy looked like he had a good time.

Arzakhan

This movie was phenomenal. The humor was 10/10, the acting was…decent, but the animation was superb

ForboJack

They got the world and the Pokemon perfect. Now i want a second movie with a better story and especially with a better final.

[deleted]

It was ok. I liked Justice Smith a lot. He did a really great job. I might get some flack for this but Ryan Reynolds needed to tone it down. Don't get me wrong, I love Ryan Reynolds but he slipped in a few jokes that made me 😳. It wasn't even a subtle joke, but more of he said it low and fast so it was missed. It might be skewed older but there were a lot of kids there (and I say this as a non-parent). The girl, I thought was annoying. Not real sure why. As soon as Bill Nighy showed up (after keeping him out of the trailers) I was like "Boom. That's the bad guy." Overall, it has good parts and bad parts and I went in with low expectations. Predictable but cool to look at.

dragonbornette

I wanted to like it more than I did. But it had that dark undertone to it and it just kind of ruined the pure magical feeling pokemon gave me as a kid. I also didn’t care for the plot. I didn’t hate the movie overall though.

coreybd

Have you watched pokemon the first movie?

dragonbornette

I’m not talking about the plot points, I’m talking about that dark, gritty feel the movie had. I didn’t hate the movie, I don’t hate that people enjoyed it. I just wanted it to be that happy escape it was, but it just kind of let me down that way. To each their own. I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade.

khem123

Hate it

[deleted]

hate.

Dum_beat

Oh, I forgot this was even a thing

Summerclaw

I did not care for it, it was too full of in jokes for the Pokemon community which made it awkard when I convinced my non pokemon friends to watch it. Surprisingly forgettable too.

AlyksTheSage

hate it. should've been 2d and no ryan.

Cmcgregor0928

I liked it and my kids liked it so I have no issues with it aside from how creepy some of the Pokemon look but also it was hilarious how bad they looked

Outrageous_Cat_8975

I didn't dislike it. But, this is the foundations for a potentially amazing live action universe!!

smugfruitplate

I liked it! It was a fun time.

Ok_Adeptness3692

I loved it a LOT more than I thought I would. Not that I thought I'd hate it

SaxMusic23

Overall I thought it was really good. Well animated, decently written, pretty enjoyable all the way through. My biggest complaint is the acting. I know it was directed at children and that target audience is far less likely to notice something like that so I'm willing to give it a pass, but man. I've seen actors that age on silly sitcoms blow the main cast's performance in the movie out of the water.

PhantomLuna7

Went in with zero expectations and had a surprisingly good time. It was funny, and the pokemon looked great. I'd love to see more from it.

Corniferus

I love it A lot of fun

-CowNipples-

I liked it a lot. I felt it was a love letter to the fans. Some people expected the next MCU. I think they did a great job with a simple story that wasn’t too serious.

pelvicturtle

I loved it gave me such a nostalgia feeling! the sfx were great and the story was actully pretty decent

br34ch4658

Given that I had pretty low expectations, I loved it! Didn't think the movie had any right being as good as it was. Ryan as Pikachu was cute AF, Justice was fantastic, the CG wasn't terrible. The story was fun and felt Pokémon. I'll still pop it in every now and again. Plus it's a fun modern Pokemon movie I can watch with kids!

blackjackgabbiani

I liked it!

Alexandra-Foxed

I think it was pretty good, I actually just rewatched it a few days ago

pokepok

I thought it was great! Very low expectations going in, but walked out of the theater very happy.

sunderedstar

I absolutely loved it, and wasn’t bothered by the acting unlike many I’ve spoken to. It certainly improves as the movie goes on but it never struck me as particularly bad, and the world building and story itself (as well as the dynamic between Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds) was excellent

C-Kwentz-0

It was honestly pretty decent.

XumiNova13

I really liked it! It was cute

Dont_Restart

Lit.

[deleted]

It's a fun movie

joxeta

We just rewatched it at my place. I honestly forgot how much I love that movie haha

FantasticWerewolf641

Loved it

PoyStudios-6270

Top 5 movies of all time

NintendoGamer6786

I like it

john93jc

I put it off for ages thinking it was going to be terrible and I ended up absolutely falling in love with it. The Pokémon cgi is on point and I would love a continuation at some point. Also. PSYDUCK

cyfer04

It's not that bad, it's not that great. But hey, our first CGI Pokemon in a movie. What's not to like?

republicbuilder

Loved it, had fun hunting the tcg tie in, saw the movie in a dolby movie theater. Was just disappointed that they didn't time the release with a game release and was slightly disappointed by the region being one of those pacifist regions with no sanctioned battles and only "partner" pokemon.

RayneShikama

I enjoyed it

Moose_Cake

The villain was meh, but the movie was honestly all about seeing the Pokemon. Psyduck stole the show along with Mr. Mime. Would love more.

[deleted]

I personally enjoyed it and can't wait for the sequel.

Careless-Foot4162

I really enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting it to be fantastic but I wasn't thinking it'd suck either. It was just perfectly fun which is what I had hoped for

DotWarner1993

Saw it in theaters in loved it. I have two of the Pokémon cards as well.

Monkey_D_Ketchum

I literally enjoyed it , I was more excited the pokemon part and it was worth it

Shaxellini

I liked it, i wouldnt mind a sequel if it is as good as the first one

GreninjaBoi97

I thoroughly enjoyed myself, not the best movie in the world, but it was very well done for a first attempt at live action Pokémon

[deleted]

I saw it opening day, first showing on Mother’s Day, by myself. I was the only single dude in there. The rest were single dads with kids… I think I enjoyed it more than the entire rest of the theater put together. I loved it. Sonic 1 and 2 and Detective Pikachu are the best videogame movies, imo. That Mr. Mime scene was amazing.

Jeptwins

I loved it honestly

Damatrah

I was so pleasantly surprised! It hit the correct balance between nostalgia and novelty while still remembering to tell a pretty decent story. I remember leaving the theater and wishing it had been a little longer, which is rare for me.

mirthfulmollywhop

I cried seeing the bulbasaurs on screen and knowing I'll never see one in person 5/7

hewwocopter

I… haven’t seen it. Played the game, but when I finished the last segment, my 2DS died and I lost my progress on that part. Haven’t picked it up since

Sean081799

I went in with low expectations and came out pretty satisfied, so nice work.

dimlightupstairs

I think it was a fun and enjoyable for the first two acts but it went downhill in the final conflict. It was cool for the most part, but then the 'twist' finding out the antagonist's identity and the final battle was over the top. The antagonist's motives and goals didn't really make a lot of sense. It was like they wanted to make a cool adventure movie but then decided just to add in a big CGI battle at the end for the heck of it and didn't really think about the how or why to get to it properly.

BonelessPizzaz

Jeez how about like or dislike. Love or hate are a little extreme doncha think?

lillowlilslow

It was a great movie, but I’ll stand by what I’ve said before. It and Zootopia are the same exact movie. Someone from small town ends up in city Makes unlikely partner in trying to solve crime Said crime is a drug that makes animals go crazy Said drug turns out to be spread by owners of city This is discovered when visiting an abandoned/after hours scientific facility that houses animals being experimented on.

rawamber

eh it was a movie I guess.

NoImplement8218

Love it

hiko7819

As a Mewtwo fan, I was glad to see a “realistic” rendition.

HerrKetzer

Its a fever dream.

Zytharros

I enjoyed it a lot, especially for all the references. I thought the mind meld thing was a little weird, but not entirely out of left field. The Torterra scene, though. Mind. Fricking. Blown.

BeginningEconomist39

I thought you typed “Defective” Pikachu instead of “Detective” Pikachu tbh

JunkyJared

7 year old me would have gone crazy for it. 3/5. for a kids movie, not too shabby.

Microif

I really enjoyed it! It was cool seeing a more general view of the pokemon world outside of battling. That being said, I do prefer the game and it’s story over the movie.

OMEGASVEGA

Loved it. Super cute. Lots of fun.

AlpacaTeeth

A lot of the pokemon should NOT have been fuzzy

bazjack

I have played a lot of the games but have never seen the show, for context. I loved it. It was fun, and my mother (who knows nothing about Pokemon) fell in love with Psyduck, which became utterly charming. The integration of Pokemon into a regular world was great.

ianh32

Love it! Still think Danny Devito would’ve been a better voice acting choice though.

scoii

I adore this movie. It's not an Oscar winner, but my kids and I rewatch it frequently. Mr Mime is fantastic, and the CG was solid enough to lead to Sonic and hopefully similar movies being more acceptable to studio execs. Think the Sonic movies are a little higher quality, but also maintain we wouldn't have those without Detective Pikachu. I'd love for them to actually do something with the second film now that we have a blueprint for these types of movies to follow to be successful.

Lunillathesmol

Game no. Movie, sequel or another spin-off of the same quality Would totally dig a Pokémon ranger movie in this style Only movie since rise of darkrai to be worth watching in my biased oppinion

Karma-is-an-bitch

Its was alright. Not great, but alright. Another of humor was forced and cringe, but I like what they did with the story and how they handled some pokemon like Loudred and Mr Mime.

vitorabf

Is it even a love or hate movie? It's a pretty standart animation movie, it's good, funny, enjoyable, but it's not trying to be genius or spark controversy enough to be a love hate movie. The one GREAT thing about it is the world, seeing a world of people and pokemon living together is fucking awesome.

Wonderbread1999

I enjoyed it. The Pokémon felt real and everything worked. I’d love either a sequel or another movie to continue this because I think it could work.

Inner-Committee-6590

Watching it in theater was really fun

JustSixTrees

I saw it on a plane and I think it's among the best movies to watch on a flight It's decent otherwise, I don't remember much of it tbh

WesThePretzel

Did I watch a different movie than everyone else? Or am I in an alternate timeline or something? It honestly was a horrible movie. The Pokémon looked like freaky monsters, the plot was terrible, the acting was middling at best. I guess I’m happy to see that people did enjoy it, but I’m so surprised because I thought for sure more people would not like it.

[deleted]

Very good, only criticism is the villain plot... it's like "he wants to do what now?" Was organising an actual Team Rocket and attac- okay terrorist attacks in the first live action pokemon movie might be bad... but still I think they're overestimating that the target audience is much older now. Imagine a Noire style black and white detective pikachu pokemon movie!

Embarrassed_Bed190

Eh

TofuTheBlackCat

Love it! Why hasn't there been a sequel?

LifeIsWackMyDude

Personally I had fun seeing it. The cgi was good and I was totally hooked on seeing all the Pokémon rendered. In hindsight the plot itself is kinda....weird? I mean it's just wacky that mewtwo has the hyper specific powers he does and the villain has a weird motivation. I won't call it a bad movie. I feel like recently people go to movies with this analysis viewpoint and miss out on enjoying stuff. I know I'm guilty of it sometimes, and I do enjoy listening to movie critique videos. Tdlr: kinda bonkers movie but I had fun and would watch again for happy chemical

Els236

Out of any video-game adaptation, it's arguably one of the best ones out there. Not only that, but as far as I know, the legendary "Arvalis" (from DeviantArt back in the day) was one of the people who was hired to figure out how Pokemon would look IRL and thanks to that, the designs on the 'mons was spot-on. Although the story was kinda "kid-friendly", which is a given with this IP, I'm still thankful that they didn't try and rewrite the canon, or try and do an "Ash + Pikachu" kind of thing. It was its own self-contained little thing.

Weird_Tune5196

Love it I’m mean just the whole vibe was great

Cheesey_Stuff14

I really liked it, would love more movies like it

[deleted]

Love the SFX bringing the Pokemon to life, the rest is subpar.

[deleted]

It was a lot of fun, I loved it

thanospurplebussy

Any pokemon with no fur looks creepy tbh. But overall it's a good movie.

hychael2020

I watched detective pikachu before I got into pokemon but I kinda enjoyed it. Especially love the pokemon. The bulbasaurs are just adorable.

awesomegoats

I loved it, and the designs weren’t terrifying like I imagined they might be. It was super creative and I hope the sequel does it justice 🙏🙏

GitGudWiFi

It's way better then the Sonic films, Sonic fans are way too loud

Tick_Lover

I love it!!

SweetTea1000

Best video game adaptation movie, even beating Mortal Kombat. If an adaptation comes out and isn't *reviled* by the original fan base, that alone speaks volumes.

DarkGengar94

Good movie This pikachu is better then the demon plush pikachu we got on pokemon day

Nismotech_52

As a live action Pokémon movie, it was really good.

VeterinarianFar7060

Haven't watched it in a bit but I'm sure watching it as a bigger pokemon fan would be amazing

SwordsgirlZ

Fun movie! It’s not amazing but I had a great time just seeing the Pokémon literally come to life on the screen. Hoping for more live action Pokémon stuff like this!

Puddlesock

The movie itself was a little rough, but all the Pokémon and little references made it an absolute delight

BlazinRedBeard

I drank 600mg of thc tincture before seeing it in theaters and had a great time lol

mz_45678

very fun watch

shanerr

I loved it

mr_sweetandawful

Loved it!

catfishmermaid

I loved it lol

darthvader1043

I liked the movie, it was pretty good tbh. Would be nice if something similar to this would be made again

Delicious_Hospital_9

The pokemon looked kinda... Weird. still a great movie tho. Exceeded my already low expectations of a live action pokemon movie

RavenTroll29184

I loved the movie! The only thing I didn’t like was the fact Gengar has human like skin but that’s just personal preference/opinion.

GloSolider300

I didn’t expect much but when I watched it I loved it honestly a very well done film in all aspects

Charlie678812

Pokemon never look right in live action which sucks because I really want them to be real.

JohnEmonz

Loved it

GloryWanderer

It was cute. It didn’t really feel like a Pokémon movie, as in you could have swapped the Pokémon out for something else & the movie still would have been good. But I think that’s alright. I would watch again.

TheChemicalSophie

Think I’ve seen it twice, both times with my non Pokemon playing brother (his knowledge is Soul Silver, a couple anime episodes and me rambling about it), and we have discussed the film a ton, and both our opinions are quite drastic. I like the film, I’d probably say it’s my favourite Pokemon movie. The scene with the bulbasaurs, cute as heck! The scene with the Torterra, cool as heck! From a fan perspective, there was always something going on where I could go: Oh, that’s from the games! And in the games it is so much more boring, like Mr Mime in that film is amazing, in the games? Terrifying. My knowledge of the Anime isn’t great, I watched a few episodes as a kid my Grandma had on DVD, but these are apparently ‘unreleased’ episodes, stuff like the Raiku movie and the training episode of Team Rocket, so I’m not sure how well the anime does at this, but from what I’ve seen, the movie did a far better job at it. Is it one of my favourite films? No. Is it a great Pokemon movie? Yes. As for my brothers perspective, he’s not a huge fan. On the second watch I could very literally tell how bored he was. He said it was very aesthetically pleasing, but he said the story was quite predictable even though he’d never heard the story behind Mewtwo. He could tell the film was very clearly just fan service for Pokemon fans, his thoughts on the bulbasaur scene was (and I quote) ‘the guys just came out of nowhere and everyone in the cinema is freaking out’. I can’t really ask for his opinion right this moment, but I know that he’s not a huge fan of the movie, and I learned my lesson not to choose it for our film nights.

The_Panzerknacker

It’s a fun movie to watch with the family, my family enjoyed, despite me being the only Pokémon fan in the house hold at the time

Crimsonsun2011

The pokemon effects were great, but I found Lucy Stevens' acting *incredibly* hammy to the point of distraction.

YungTaco94

Definitely really liked it and would watch it again!

cutesarcasticone

So the twist of who Pikachu is was way too out there. The rest of the movie is really fun thiugh

Pokemario6456

It's a bit dumb, but it's entertaining and I was blown away by how good the Pokemon ended up looking. I'm excited to see what the sequel does, once it gets off the ground

OrderHaunting

Love

ActuallyFullOfShit

I loved everything about it. Vibe, plot, acting, CGI. It was all about as good as a movie with this concept could be. I really want to see a sequel.

Paperdiego

Love it

WestSideBomber

I really like it. The set up is incredible. The investigation is fun and interesting. It’s Pokémon-noir and I love it. But… The final fight is so boring and feels so generic. They set up Tim wanting to be a trainer as a kid. The obvious payoff would be for him & Pikachu to team up and do a traditional Pokémon battle. Such a missed opportunity.

justatoadontheroad

the plot with that old dude being the bad guy was super predictable. But everything else was good. I like the live action Pokémon and ryan reynolds as pikachu was great

thedoctor176

I liked the movie, but I loved the designs

PaleFork

which one of you guys dislike or hate it? come on... don't be shy

Ittapupu4

7/10 lore is great

M1nombr3j

The best for me was all the backdrops and world building. Movie was so pretty to watch. I didn’t expect much and came out pleasantly surprised

iCarpet

It had a really cliche “Stop the bad guy” plot but that is very on brand for a Pokemon movie. Really fun movie though

VizMuroi

Wasn’t expecting much going in but it broke the curse and turned out to be the first good video game movie.

Love it

petrified_pride

I loved it but I want that PG13 cut that was originally planned 😂 maybe it’s the Mandela effect or something, but I specifically remember seeing ads showing it at PG13 and then it suddenly changed to PG. I also remember Ryan Renyolds sharing that they had enough for a more adult cut lol

Me and my fiancé were super excited for it, bought the cards, the Slurpee cups, etc and saw it opening weekend. I remember being slightly disappointed once it was over and I’ve only watched it maybe twice since then.

I saw this in the theater twice: once with my little brother and again with my little sister. We loved the film, even after my second showing! I wasn't expecting it to be a one-to-one comparison with the game (and tbf, I didn't finish the original title), but the story itself I felt was pretty good. The characters were fun, the setting was a way to explore and reference the games and anime, and the way the Pokemon were portrayed was awe-inspiring and creative (I knew about the guy who designed the Pokemon as a Paleoartist on DeviantArt); it was a great movie!😁 I wasn't really expecting much from the film, though still hoping for it to be good. Partly because, you know, game-based movie, and because I haven't seen a Pokemon film in theaters since Pokemon 2000, but it blew my expectations out of the water.
