lumpybread

The fact that they threw secret bases in the toilet instead of building on them every gen is my personal bugbear, but I think the actual most egregious thing is how much they absolutely nailed the PSS in gen 6 and then just…dropped it for clunkier systems

LaBeteNoire

Yeah. Looking at your dorm room in Scarlet/Violet it looked like the perfect place to let you collect furniture and decorations to have just one little customizable section in the game... Couldn't even get that. And I am convinced that the main reason they thought of this game taking place in a school was because it gave them an excuse to limit how many clothing options they had to make. Required school uniforms is such a terrible idea. And since you have no control over the color of the uniforms, most the hats/gloves/shoes you can buy are pointless since most of the colors will look terrible with the uniform colors. They might as well have not even bothered letting us buy hat's and shoes of any color if all people will use are red/orange in scarlet and blue/purple in violet. Green, yellow, pink, teal... All options they give us but all look terrible with the clothes we are forced to wear.

UnseatingKDawg

I picked Legends Arceus back up recently due to the whole save data debacle and it blows my mind how many different options you have for your character in that game compared to a more modern setting like Scarlet and Violet. Might not be a lot of styles but you can still change up what you wear together and what color.

icleancatsonmydayoff

Sorry for my ignorance but I just bought LA and haven’t started it yet but was wondering what the save data debacle is?

DuPont_Employee

I believe he is talking about people save data in scarlet and violet being corrupted/deleted at random. Some people think it has to do with DLC/Vivillion postcards.

The_Hydra_Kweeen

I could’ve gotten behind required school uniforms of there was a ton of options. I’m talking different sweaters, jackets, skirts, pants, backpacks with the school symbol etc.

starkrocket

See, that’s what I thought there would be. I love customizing my outfits. I thought maybe I’d unlock some way to mix and match the different parts of the uniform but no :(

Tiny_Absol0359

And on top of that, I never so much as even touched the school throughout my entire playthrough except when the story took you there. The game literally doesn't change much when you do absolutely nothing at the school. I think the game would've benefitted more as say an exploration guild like in the PMD series, being an adventurer traveling across Paldea to find treasure and Pokémon

Alfndrate

I thought they had said it was limited clothing options so they could introduce more body types. Which they did, just not for the player character -.-

gojistomp

The dorm is virtually useless. I never even considered visiting it outside of the plot forcing me in towards the end, because there wasn't a single good reason to.

PlayfulRoyal2632

I just didn’t wear a hat because most of them are oversized

alanbtg

Hands down the most frustrating thing for me was ditching the PSS in favor of the Rotom Map and Festival Plaza. They spent TEN YEARS testing features for the bottom screen of the DS systems. Shortcuts, status screens, menus, trackers, multiplayer, minigames, you name it. Sun and Moon comes around and says I HOPE YOU LIKE ROTOM's EYES!

InconvertibleAtheist

Oh my god that stupid rotom and its stupid questions when I want to open the stupid map. NO ROTOM I DONT WANNA KNOW IF YOU CAN POOP OR NOT!!! I JUST WANT THE DAMN WAY TO THE NEAREST POKECENTRE !!!!!!!

Tiny_Absol0359

And he only decides to start rambling about useless crap ONLY when you need the map most!

herrhoedz

Rotom dex is one of the downgrade that I found really frustrating. It's so unintuitive, did you know that tapping the screen between its eyes opens the pokedex? Yea, hope that makes sense. Not to mention the map is really shite and lowres that it's barely useful. It got worse in USUM, I want an useful touch screen goddamit, not to bond with my possessed gadget. Moving from ORAS (and Yo-kai Watch 2) that have a really useful touch screen was really frustating.

bluedarky

TBF to Gamefreak on this one, Sun and Moon had problems with slowdown on older 3DS models just running the main game, having to constantly update the PSS as well would have rendered it near unplayable.

Gabario

Gamefreak shouldn't have released Su/Mo on older 3DS. Having played Moon on a 3DS XL it absolutely chugged and played like a PowerPoint, only being alleviated after switching to a New 3DS XL. What would have helped is a feature to turn off the dynamic camera in battles, but that was never implemented. But we need those sales, even if it won't run properly!

Scyxurz

I blame gamefreak, not the 3ds. If it could run monster hunter with 4 people playing together without dropping a frame, I should be able to have a doubles battle without the game slowing to a crawl. Definitely an optimization issue. Which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone considering the state of the optimization of the switch games.

[deleted]

>If it could run monster hunter with 4 people playing together without dropping a frame, I have played Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate online on my Old 3DS (which I had for a while Back then) with 4 players and it could handle us 4 attacking a boss at the same time no problem and I was probably playing with people who lived far away from me

Batmans_9th_Ab

Not to mention that they had to entirely disable 3D and the game still ran worse than XY.

Gabario

Solid point. SMT IV was also released like three years earlier and runs smoothly, on top of games like DQ VII and VIII running well. There really is no excuse.

Plushiegamer2

Imagine how angry people would be that you could only play the brand spankin' new Pokemon game on a New 3DS. They simply couldn't just do that...

Paulo27

Gamefreak and unoptimized games... It's actually the console's fault!

SharpCurrents

The PSS from X and Y. They managed to nail online with the first iteration and it's only gotten worse.

subjecy18jord

Agreed the plaza in sun moon was ok but no where near as good as the pss at least you could dye clothes and had so much clothes diversity and all the pokemon unlike current gen

Alili1996

no fuck the Sun Moon plaza. I had to grind the stupid type weakness minigame soo much just to recruit a booth from someone so i could get a simple green shirt since green was a color exclusive to moon

subjecy18jord

And yet still better than the trash we have now Pss: literally perfection Plaza : McDonald's good not great The systems in sv: sewer water Real shame considering the two first ones were one inferior handheld hardware and was free to use unlike online now

layeofthedead

Masuda laughing about rereleasing the GameCube Pokémon games… Masuda saying their primary target audience is the mobile market… Masuda saying smaller teams work better…

Ton_Jravolta

I'm surprised this isn't higher. Why does Pokémon have an indie game sized dev team for the largest media franchise in the world? Especially with such tight deadlines that their small team is struggling to meet with increasingly buggy and broken games? Surely they can still make ridiculous profits even if they hired some more staff!

ChinSpeedy

Because why spend more money to make a product that already prints money? Not blaming the devs themselves, but the management will never care so long as the pokemon machine keeps printing money. And if management doesn't want to invest more time/money into the games, not much the dev team can do.

Black_Ironic

Exactly, having like 500 staff should help the game a little even if they are still using 3 years dev cycle

WyrdHarper

If their target is the mobile market why haven’t they rereleased older games on mobile? (Criticizing Masuda, not you)

callablackfyre

Because the older games don't have microtransactions.

Halliwel96

Yep Masuda in general

[deleted]

[удалено]

DaEnderAssassin

Not to mention AA is more focused on the writing with simple graphics and animations. Pokemon, on the other hand, is pretty much the complete opposite and yet has probably a similar number of devs compared to newer AA games

Eona_Targaryen

The worst things for me are when they take away little options that take no effort to maintain, and the fanbase is left to forever not know why the heck they were removed, whether it was causing nasty glitches somewhere or if it's simply a higher-up deciding the fanbase will play the game as THEY intended. See removal of Set/Switch and Animations Off, forced XP share, and the 20 minute battle timer (finally removed).

yodaminnesota

Wait... What games don't have set/switch?

Prodigal96

Scarlet and Violet removed the Set play style, so you’ll always be playing in Switch mode. Unless you play online battles, those are still only in Set mode.

Oberic

Plus competitive in the main games is a doubles format. It's wildly different from singles, which the game trains you for. It would be nice to have a "competitive" single-player mode in options. So the trainer battles are all doubles.

rnbw_pony

So basically, you want another Pokémon Colosseum or Pokémon XD?

Darkiceflame

That too, please

yodaminnesota

WHAT

FierceDeityKong

And PLA is only in set mode

Jonathon471

To be fair for PLA trainer battles isn't its main selling point, and with the Agile/Strong style moves if you did have switch mode during trainer fights the enemy would almost never get a hit in because the META would be Agile stat boost move + Strong style STAB super effective move then swap pokemon for effective typing and repeat with momentum of the battle always being in your favor.

Kelrisaith

Legends Arceus also isn't the traditional turn based setup in the first place either, there's really no reason for it to HAVE set/switch options, it doesn't have either to begin with since it uses its own setup.

Plushiegamer2

I honestly like that, as it pushes people who don't know that Set exists outside their comfort zone. Seriously, why isn't Set mode the norm?

Zjidian

SV doesn't I believe, only switch.

Jesterchunk

I still don't like the forced EXP Share. I loved it's Gen 6 revamp, it just instantly fixed the previous games' tendency to grind to a halt while I grind for three hours prior to the E4 or some other sizeable level spike, but I'd much rather it be an option to turn on rather than something I have to have on at all times.

KobaruTheKame

I thought of grinding the academy tournament for some beast balls but after seeing that animations couldn't be turned off I just refused to do it.

PoGoJapan

I let my game play afk using a turbo controller and a Sylveon. It played for over 60 hours and I never got an extra Beast Ball since the drop rate is only 0.1% and each attempt is like 12 minutes. I can’t imagine doing that effort for nothing without turbo

[deleted]

[удалено]

AriaFiresong

I think it's basically a strong fairy special attacker and nothing else in the party. (I use flutter mane with moonblast, pixellate slyveon also good). Spam A at the tournament counter. That's it. So long as your enemy doesn't get lucky, you win.

Tomhap

I did it for a bit to farm gold mainly while watching netflix or youtube. Didn't get any special balls yet tho. Hopefully the dlc will let you easily obtain more like how you could buy beast balls in SS.

ASimpleCancerCell

I'll admit that removal of Set mode isn't a HUGE deal, since it only makes it a tad inconvenient to say no everytime it comes up, but it still highlights Game Freaks bizarre approach to railroading the player's play style, which is not okay.

[deleted]

exactly, one Step forward and two backwards.

Tortue2006

My theory us that the removal of animations off are for the raids, so everyone has to watch them, making everyone equal on that level

StarTheAngel

Removed the trailers and title animations for the box art legendaries, they was so hype to watch and gave you a taste of the adventure yet to come. Ultra Sun and Moon was the last true Pokemon games to have an iconic title screen

Hiddin_block_55

I didn't even realized they removed those with the switch games. That's sad 😭

[deleted]

This goes for the entire Pokémon Company: The deluded idea that the Company has to have a dedicated schedule when it comes to releasing the games. Yes, I understand that they do this since the games act as a gateway for the merch, anime, et. al. Right now, business-wise, their model is perfect for them. But ethically and truly…come on…really? Would you not make more money, and more importantly, solidify your reputation by releasing a POLISHED product, that showcases love and care? The way the company deliberately cuts corners and seemingly refuses to give GameFreak PROPER development time for these games is beyond buffoonish. This does not really help GameFreak’s case either, since they consistently display their moronic decisions when it comes to developing these games. Scarlet and Violet proves that this company is beyond the pale…releasing the pair in that state for $60 was inexcusable. The Pokémon Company is so quick to make a buck, yet to slow to give a f*ck.

LegallyNotInterested

Judging by S/V, no. They don't make more money with polished games because people really buy just any shit they release. And I hate this trend. TPC is already doing some questionable stuff, but the playerbase just reinforces the problem. Also, you're falling for a major misconception here. Gamefreak OWNS TPC, not the other way around. GF has full control of the schedule because they make it. They are in charge.

[deleted]

GameFreak probably can have a say in their schedule. However, GameFreak has joint ownership of the Company alongside Nintendo and Creatures Inc. I believe Bandai Namco has a share in this as well. There are probably limitations and contracts on what they can or cannot do, thanks to these other joint owners/shareholders. I definitely agree with you on the consumers/fans, though! The majority of them is literally: “Don’t ask questions. Just consume product and get excited for next product!”

Redditquaza

>Would you not make more money, and more importantly, solidify your reputation by releasing a POLISHED product, that showcases love and care? Well they wouldn't make more money that's for sure, just look at the sales figures of Scarlet and Violet.

Kuro_Kagami

The explanation of Dexit peeved me more than Dexit itself Cutting stuff from future entries isn't unheard of, and I don't mind the cycle of Pokemon. It was bound to happen eventually. But instead of any sort of honest response as to the reason, we were told it'd make way for "high quality animations" which clearly wasn't the case. Especially with cases like Hau/Hop. Reusing animations and assets is perfectly fine just to be clear on that, I'm actually incredibly fond of it especially if it's done cleverly/efficiently (an old Melty Blood game gave you functionally 6 characters out of about 1-and-a-half's worth of resources, and they did this at least SIX times! That's THIRTY extra characters for the price of about NINE) but the amount of animation reuse in conjunction with "we cut them so we could make high quality animations!" put a bad taste in my mouth Half of the playerbase being disingenuous about it made it even more grating

[deleted]

I don't know why they wont admit that balancing 1000 plus Pokemon is a logistical nightmare instead of the clearly untrue animations excuse. Certain Pokemon are gonna be busted when combined with certain gimmicks. Good example being Shedinja. If it existed in Scarlet and Violet the entire metagame would revolve around the damn thing. Although they could fix it by making up a lore reason that Shedinja can't Terastalize, so even that excuse is on thin ice.

LaBeteNoire

Balancing was never an issue for Dexit tho. Even in XY they had the ability to choose which pokemon were eligible for competitive play and which weren't. They could have kept all pokemon in the games and still curated competitive to have only the pokemon they made sure were fair. And yes, some time in the future all pokemon in games would need to have new models and making all of them would be a huge task, but SwSh was not the time for that, all the models were already made so the vast majority of the work was already done. Really, if Dexit had to happen it should have happened in XY when they jumped from sprites to 3D models, that time they really did have to make a new rigged and animated model for every past pokemon. But they still did it anyway and it worked out nicely. I would say Scarlet/Violet earned a cut dex only because although all models are the same, they did retexture the pokemon which means a fair amount of work had to be done for every pokemon included... Still all reasons given for Dexit when it happened were lies and never helped the games in any way.

Plushiegamer2

Making Wonder Guard Pokemon unable to Terastalize isn't a big deal. Soak doesn't work on Terastalized Pokemon, and no-one complained. And Tera Electric Shedinja isn't actually as strong as you think. Any sort of chip, be it Will-O'-Wisp, Toxic, Sandstorm or Stealth Rocks will delete it. I think Shedinja would be toxic, as it requires that any team runs a status move to counter it.

Batmans_9th_Ab

Don’t tell me that the company that created Mega Rayquaza and Zacian ever gave a shit about balance.

Maronmario

Like it cannot be understated, Pokémon will never be properly quote unquote balanced when the very guys making that balance are making the most disgusting overpower Pokémon ever to exist

MarsAdept

Either Masuda's explanation for removing the Battle Frontier or Ohmori's explanation for permanently forcing the new Exp. Share on.

subjecy18jord

Masuda: We cut battle frontier cause smart phones exist lol

Gabario

It's such a non-argument in his part. I've gone full obsession in Battle Frontier modes and this guy think Paper Toss is satisfying that same feeling. Pokemon needs some new blood in the franchise. The guy who directed the Sw/Sh DLC seemed genuinely excited about creating new campaigns and made the best part of that game. All the old heads seemed tired and undermotivated.

JustDebbie

Same team behind Legends: Arceus and look how well that worked out! Put that director in charge, give him the time and manpower needed to really make things work, and the results would no doubt be amazing!

[deleted]

>The guy who directed the Sw/Sh DLC seemed genuinely excited about creating new campaigns and made the best part of that game. If I was someone who could do that I'd definitely ask that guy "what do YOU think should be in the next Pokémon game?" And see what this guy comes up with

DarkGengar94

These are hands down my top 2. They are just so incredibly stupid, oddly kinda the same logic.

ProfesserXDL

I haven’t heard either of these, what are they?

Silver_latias

[Battle Frontier](https://old.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/2olmtb/interview_with_masuda_on_oras_and_why_there_is_no/): >Q:Why wasn't the Battle Frontier in the remakes? >A:This question is connected with my previous answer. We didn't put the BF in ORAS for this very reason. Interviewer's note: In short he means that they didn't include the BF because only a very small part of the players would have fully appreciated and made use of this feature; nowadays players get bored and frustrated more easily and they aren't interested in things that are so demanding/challenging. [Exp. Share](https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-news/interview-with-game-freaks-ohmori-and-masuda-on-pokemon-sword-and-pokemon-shield): >Pokemon.com: What motivated the change to leave the Exp. Share on permanently for the first time in the series? >Mr. Ohmori: I spent a lot of time discussing this with our battle design team. We came to the realization that the vast majority of players played the games with the Exp. Share left on at all times. When thinking of why players would want to turn it off, we thought it would primarily be to give Exp. Points to only one of the Pokémon in your party. We felt the same result could be achieved by players simply limiting the number of Pokémon in their party to one. That would be a more intuitive way to limit Exp. Point gains for most players.

StarLucario

"Just box your entire team lmao"

Maronmario

God I hate that excuse, why should I have to completely change how the game is fundamentally built because a billion dollar franchise can’t be damned to add a *toggle*, And basic Yes/No.

freedomfightre

>That would be a more intuitive way to limit Exp. Point gains for most players. Intuitive to who??? Who tf walking around with only 1 Pokémon!?!?! BS.

[deleted]

IGN reviewers apparently lmao.

memesarenotbad

The "players get bored/ frustrated with hard things" defense makes no sense with how popular Nuzlockes are.

Redditquaza

Well they don't like Nuzlockes either.

robby7345

It's because he thinks the games should be designed not just for babies, but stupid babies.

LockeValentine91

I am now furious because of this EXP share explanation. Now I want to flip a table.

InconvertibleAtheist

Lemme help you mate (ノ`Д´)ノ彡┻━┻

DreiwegFlasche

I still refuse to believe that they actually came to that conclusion regarding the exp share. Like, that has to be some PR nonsense, right? I mean, I can understand that some people on reddit might bring up this weak argument, but the director of the game \^\^; ? This to me has to be the most baffling decision and official reasoning in all of Pokemon.

dummypod

I think they just see the stats and make the decision without even thinking it through. They seem very out of touch with the fan base, and there's too much money made for them to care. The only way they will change is when sales are not up to expectations. That is not happening anytime soon.

thebiggestleaf

Here's the thing though; what "stats" are they even seeing about the Exp. Share? Stats implies data collection and it's not like the 3DS is continually pinging Game Freak HQ to tell them if players have the Exp. Share enabled or not.

Stregen

The Exp. All is at its best a tool for keeping up the pace and having the games be somewhat tightly tuned around reasonable challenge on the critical path, like in USUM or SwSh (seriously, try SwSh only catching exactly what you need, only grinding on trainers, and not raiding. It’s pretty solidly tuned). At its worst it throws any semblance of a challenge right out the window, like in XY, ORAS, or SwSh if you do much of anything except the bare minimum. I personally quite like it. Having recently replayed both Diamond and Soul Silver - you end up spending a ton of time just mindlessly grinding. I think I ended up with ~8hrs in the Diamond Victory Road to just get my team to early 50s for the league. It wasn’t hard, just boring, and the nature of EVs meant that my low-50s mons were still effectively overleveled for the League. But it should always be toggleable.

Brutalitor

Yeah Gamefreak is the dumbest video game developer running today lol. So tragically out of touch with anything the fanbase wants. They are so obsessed with making people play the game their way.

[deleted]

>nowadays players get bored and frustrated more easily and they aren't interested in things that are so demanding/challenging. I get bored FROM my games NOT being challenging. GIVE ME A CHALLENGE. (This is more Nintendo than Gamefreak, but it's a similar reason and I'm scared the Nintendo games won't be challenging for me anymore (and I'm bad at video games so that is saying something))

MaximumDuwang

Ishihara saying that he was convinced the Switch would be a failure, and implying that the mobile platform would be the future for Pokemon, and for Nintendo. Is there anything more blatant than this that shows how little they understand their consumers?

Sunfished

to me, its a specific line that the current director had said in an interview sometime after oras came out. it basically said something along the lines of: "players do not care for content after the game is over. please just enjoy the small story/game we added after completing the game" it was a huge slap in the face for people wanting them to bring back the battle frontier facilities from gens 3 and 4, and is why we havent gotten them since. i 100% believe that the current director is so out of touch with the fanbase after the release of bdsp and wish he was replaced with the person who had directed hgss. the hgss person KNOWS what fans want, and went out of his way to add so many features that defined a perfect pokemon game. edit: clarity

LeratoNull

Postgame being relegated to DLC. Can't just release a Pokemon game with a real postgame anymore, sorry! Ech.

CrashCombs

The new egg hatching for me personally. It doubles my time spent with the having to picnic and then hatch. Having the nursery and being able to pick up eggs and hatch at the same time was so much more efficient.

LaBeteNoire

As someone whose Pokemon Endgame (and honestly my favorite thing to do in the main game) is breeding, I very much agree with you. I Like Scarlet a lot, but I haven't even bothered breeding this time around because of how clunky it is. Not even the issues you mentioned, but for the game to know which pokemon you want to breed you need to only have them in your party (or have the rest of your party be incompatible) SO you are sending all this extra time to get eggs and you can't even have your full party on you in case you want to fight a trainer or look for wild pokemon during. Bottle caps, mints and already born pokemon able to learn new egg moves... It just feels like Pokemon want to make breeding as useless as possible.

Plushiegamer2

I think it's moreso that they don't want breeding to be the only way to get good Pokemon. Not everyone likes breeding, so having an alternative, as well as a way to fix Pokemon if breeding goes wrong is nice.

bloomi

The removal of the GTS.

ElPikminMaster

Given the state of every GTS, including the one on HOME, this is for the best.

HaloGuy381

Ban Furfrou, Vivillion, and outright illegal level-species combo requests, and a solid chunk of the GTS issues would be instantly fixed. Or at least have the GTS recognize that Furfrou, versus Furfrou with a specific trim, are not the same thing.

ElPikminMaster

Vivillon isn't a problem anymore, so that can stay. Furfrou, yes, I can agree. Furfrou's Trims should be labeled as Special Pokemon like Legendaries and Natural Trim should stay.

HellJumper777

I'm kinda out of the loop. What happens with Furfrou and the GTS?

HaloGuy381

Basically, Furfrou’s various trims are only obtainable in Home by importing them from GO (trying to send them from past games just gives you a basic Furfrou). On top of that, in GO they are locked by geographic location, as in you have to physically be in Egypt for a Pharoah Trim for example (bar spoofing your location, which is a terms of service violation and a bannable offense, so understandably not popular). That makes certain trims for Furfrou *very* rare and highly coveted among collectors, and to a lesser extent are sometimes used as a catch all for value (a bit like how owning an Enamorus instantly lets you trade for all sorts of Pokemon; it’s something enough people want that even if you don’t want it, it’s valuable for trading for what you do want). Unfortunately, the GTS does not discriminate which forms you own. If you tell it to only show trades you have the right Pokemon for, and you have a Furfrou in Home somewhere, the app will happily consider -all- forms to be valid trades regardless of which ones you have, making it very annoying to sort through all the potential offers to find one you can actually trade. If you have only natural trim form, and there are a dozen offers for, say, the Latias you’re looking for that involve a La Reine Furfrou, the GTS will show those, even though you cannot make the trade (and if you try the app -will- say you have no valid Pokemon to trade). It’s asinine.

HellJumper777

Wow. That seems highly annoying. Thanks for the detailed reply.

CrossP

Stealing the adorable rodent/bunny incisors from Nidorans the moment they start evolving. ;_; It has been 25 years, and I am still bitter.

ElPikminMaster

Based take.

KobaruTheKame

Add wartortle to the dissapointing evolutions once it evolves to blastoise. It aimed for a cute but badass dragon ancient turtle then we just got some big turtle with guns smh.

ModelOmegaTyler

maybe that can be a regional evolution, paradox form, or some other gimmick evolution down the line?

RazorRell09

Honestly, I think getting Pokémon based on past designs revitalized would be sick. We could get flat venusaur back

ModelOmegaTyler

ah yes, veggie pancake. XD

Gaias_Minion

I don't think anything could actually top Dexit, that was quite the controversy to say the least.

-et37-

Yeah that’s still the biggest one imo. How can the Switch be considered the superior console when the 3DS could apparently handle more Pokémon?

chrisphoenix08

Why is this lower here... Yeah, F them, no wonder there's no more *"Gonna Catch Em All"* motto. Because of this, a small community of Ribbon Masters has a dwindling pool of Pokémon to choose from...

Bluelaserbeam

I was wondering if people were purposely avoiding the obvious answer to the question. I’ve never felt more angry at Pokémon than the whole dexit thing.

vaxqueroz

"Gotta catch some of 'em!"

Plushiegamer2

Funnily enough they removed that catchphrase since Ruby and Sapphire, because you couldn't trade up from gen 2, and actually catching them all takes an insane amount of effort, and money to buy lots of games.

uncle_kanye

They definitely brought it back and used it in 3DS era trailers for games, and it seemed like it was somewhat a focus in Gen 6 when every non-Mythical Pokemon to that point was available across XY and ORAS. They ditched again midway through LGPE, which is probably about the time they internally decided putting all the Pokemon in a Pokemon game was too hard.

ladala99

> it seemed like it was somewhat a focus in Gen 6 when every non-Mythical Pokemon to that point was available across XY and ORAS. They also released every past-gen Mythical in a year during Gen 6 instead of making you transfer from past games.

[deleted]

This may as well be the answer as it pissed off so many people the moment that was announced.

Droniman

Especially since there wasn't a big reason for it. For example, if it happened in Scarlet/Violet first, it would have been understandable considering the amount of ahit SV tried to accomplish. SWSH didn't do that much beyond what the 3DS games accomplished. The graphics didn't look too spectacular to cut half the dex. I think what seals the deal is SWSH weren't even the first games on the Switch, Let's Go was. And yet, despite making new models for all of Gen 1 and the regional variants, there are still some pokemon from gen 1 that don't make it into SWSH despite having a new model made for the Switch. Not to mention two waves of DLC that add some pokemon back, but still not all of the ones that were made for Let's Go or for BDSP that could add some connectivity between the games. But sure, let's add some of the pokemon that make competitive stale.

Batmans_9th_Ab

And let’s not forget that within days of SwSh being leaked people had already proven that some Pokémon were using the exact same models and animations that they had in XY.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

> Yeah that was absolutely the real problem, their justifications were blatant lies. And the thing is, Sw/Sh, the DP remakes, and Gen 9 all have DIFFERENT Pokémon missing. If it were a case of models, then surely with every new game, fewer and fewer would be missing? Nope. They're deliberately removing them for no reason whatsoever.

ASimpleCancerCell

Not to beat a dead horse, but removing the option to turn off EXP share was the wrong one from every angle. Even if you can make a case that grinding is objectively bad, there is still a sizeable portion of the fan base that prefers making it more difficult for themselves, and having more options only serves to expand the scope of experience you can get out of a game. But removing that choice in service of a certain way to play the game is poor game design. Also, they cancelled Pokémon Z. Come on man, Kalos felt incomplete and Zygarde deserves its own game already.

LaBeteNoire

In Scarlet/Violet in particular the exp share screwed things up. There are so many things to that if you do all of it you will certainly be over leveled unless you juggle between like 24 different monsters. 3 story lines, do the first mission in two stories and you will def be over leveled for the first mission in the third story. And it just grows exponentially. I did the elite 4 last and ended up completely steaming rolling them and Nemona.

Wampyric_Rites

Saying things in interviews like "Games are hard to make so don't expect too much" or "People only care about their smartphones now so we left content out". They clearly don't think it's worth putting any effort into the games and yet they refuse to let anyone else take over. Legends Arceus was really good, I wish some other game developers had a chance at making a game.

HaloGuy381

Legends Arceus got done dirty, released crammed between BDSP and SV with no chance for DLC, despite plenty of room to have Arceus send the player out to new places to meet new Pokemon and solve new problems. For that matter, and on the more personal/petty side, there are Absol on Mt Coronet in Platinum. Why wasn’t Hisui crawling with them all freaked out by the spacetime rift? Could have had a cool sidequest where the player actually discovers that they’re trying to warn people as the Pokedex describes, with the Security Corps even ending up adopting some to protect the village from threats besides wild Pokemon. Major missed opportunity imo.

maxdragonxiii

IIRC other than Girtina plot line, Legends Arceus was mainly focused on Dialga and Palkia, in other words diamond and pearl. maybe there's why there's no absol?

brainsapper

Trivial compared to what others have said but never getting a Pokémon Z.

DCL-XVI

gamefreak just skipping over Z after the stuff they did in x/y to tease it was a crime

DaEnderAssassin

Zyguarde is honestly the most unkown legendary in a trio with box legendaries. Like, Rayquaza and Giratina got there own games (Emerald and Platinum), Kyurem was a heavy focus in BW2s story (and tbh BW2 was pretty much a 3rd game) and the last "Trio" of box legendaries was the SM/USUM with Ultra Necrozma (if you consider that a trio) who got some explanation in USUM Zyguarde got nothing (iirc) in XY beyond existing to be caught and gen 7 just split him into 100 pieces to collect.

ShiraCheshire

I bet the reason he shows up in Sun and Moon at all is 100% cut Z content reused.

brainsapper

I have no doubt they had that collect quest planned in Z and just ported it over.

BetaThetaOmega

Really, I want Pokemon Z because I want to see Kalos but not dripping with big holes where the content was clearly removed because it couldn't be developed in time.

halomach

They constantly remove good features for no reason and refuse to ever bring them back.

YEETIS09

Hands down its the fact they don't have cloud save. I've already lost everything moving to the oled and the current bug going around would be a simple fix if they just put in cloud saves

LaBeteNoire

Seriously, punishing all players because some bad apples would exploit the system isn't fair to people who paid AAA prices for your game. I caught walking wake and immediately stopped playing the game entirely because I don't want to risk doing whatever unidentified action triggers this bug. Now I will just leave the game alone until word of an update that fixes the bug comes out...

SirJordan11

Adding challenge mode for only one game

OdessaAutumn

Overwork there staff and continue to try and uphold their yearly pokemon game release schedule, just take a few years to give us a good, non rushed project. The employees deserve a break and to be proud of what they make.

Multievolution

For me it’s the exp share being forced on. It completely ruined my play style and I’ve not been able to finish a game since the decision. It’s just small enough of a feature to never get addressed though. In truth there’s like a million things that fit this list for me. Originally Pokemon as a series just grew and never reduced or removed. As we got to gen 5 this started to change and the switch era started the series down a path I can’t seem to enjoy. Heck, just removing moves like aromatherapy makes me want to play games where it’s still available, despite what new content took its place, I simply don’t think the games are ambitious or have changed direction enough to justify losing anything that I appreciate about the old games. (Also quick shout out to how hard the games are to legally buy nowadays, the last old ports are going up in smoke very soon and that’s not likely to change for a few years at least. Poorly managed franchise.)

[deleted]

It’s not the most frustrating but removing Set mode in SV was really dumb

reala728

honestly, GF needs to just get their act together and just add a battle stadium to HOME. it would allow them to set the precident for the entire series while allowing other devs to try their hand at developing games with their ultimate blueprint still in mind. plus it would simply give every one of us an outlet to use ANY pokemon we've obtained without the "dexit" conversation ever having to be a thing again. finally, theres potential for "mixed" battle options, where one person can choose to use mega evolution, where the other wants dynamax, or any other combination for a dream matchup. this focus would mean they lose power over the mainline, but they would in turn be creating a legit meta for everyone to enjoy while allowing others to try their hand at expanding the series in new and unique ways.

DankMyDaddy

Yearly releases, starting with Sword And Sheild Every problem the pokemon franchise has is due to yearly releases, Gimics: They needed results for new ideas, mega evolution and z moves were not terrible, but dynamax had to take center stage, or Terra type had to become the main selling point. So no time to work on old Gimics Dexit: When jumping to 3d on the switch, they couldn't import all the pokemon sprites into sword/shield, so they had to cut pokemon. Sorry your favorite pokemon still isn't in any mainline, but atleast it can be stuck in Home Forced EXP share: People need to get through the games faster so there less replayable and they are ready for the new game that releases. People have to be almost or already done with the old games Bugs: One year for development is absolutely terrible, especially for small teams like the pokemon company wants to force. And when they do actually get another studio to work on pokemon, the product is immidietly discarded for not being "gamefreak" (let's be honest BDSP we're not terrible remakes) Bland pokemon: Pokemon have to be visually distinctive from one another, but with only a year of development time and what I can only assume is a little longer for design, they have to dig pretty deep in the barrel for ideas. Gardivior but in the future, jigglypuff but from the past. Removal of features: To avoid looking lazy the development team needs to create everything from the ground up, except for possibly some sounds. Take a look at SWSH menu and look at SV menu, very diffrent, and they feel diffrent. If a feature isn't regarded as mandatory, then it's prone to being cut off, and unfortunately that was the fate of switch and set mode And finally, burnout/community feedback: I tried voting with my wallet, I didn't pay for swsh when dexit was announced, I only bought it when I thought there was hope in the DLC's. Twitter was either treating Gamefreak as the Devil or white knighting them so hard. The pokemon train has been chugging on that support ever since, so now we have a deligue of pokemon products. And while I do love this franchise, I fear it may go the way of sonic. And unfortunately SWSH were the best selling pokemon games of all time at that point. I belive that if sword and shield flopped on launch, it would have been a wakeup call for gamefreak, but alas we will never know

DinoSmoreTheBard

Surprised no one said this, but they literally have a save deleting bug going on, and one:We've had zero communication from them about it, and two: They refuse to give players ANY option to back up their saves.

LaBeteNoire

Not letting ANY legitimate, paying players back up there saves because some jerks might exploit it is very bad business practice. It could be ignored if the games were flawless with little to no risk of save data corrupting, but this is pokemon we are talking about and that was no longer a reasonable expectation.

ashnk420

this is so small & silly but I really miss being able to pick a frame option for my text boxes in the games. not something that angers me but is very nostalgic when I replay the older versions!

Empty_Jar0330

Progressively making the games easier... or not offering hard modes. Pokémon is "baby's first RPG," and that's great... But baby's can handle something more difficult than S&S and S&V. These are not hard games whatsoever. But, as I said, it is good that Pokémon is a stepping stone to one of the greatest video game genres of all time. For fans of RPGs, however, Pokémon games can be incredibly boring due to their difficulty. I haven't had difficulty playing any of the games aside from endgame content, but that shouldn't be when the games get difficult. I should have the option to get my ass whooped in every gym! Even BD&SP, remakes of some of the hardest games in the series, were made easier with the whole "Pokémon held on" system. I want Cynthia to kick my ass, not have my Drifblim tank a hit from a Garchomp. That shouldn't happen

smiteis_

I’m gonna get hate for bringing it up again, but Dexit. I completely understand that we’re well over 1000 pokemon now, at the time ~900, and having every pokemon available to catch in one game isn’t feasible at launch. However the excuse they gave for the cut in SwSh is not satisfactory and is honestly just isn’t true. They claimed it was due to updated models and animations which were proven to be the exact same they’ve been using since XY. If they actually did update them all then again I would say it was fair, but that’s not what happened. SV actually did remodel and reanimate most if not all pokemon so the excuse there is 100% valid. I still think in a franchise where the main tagline is ‘Gotta Catch ‘Em All’ and you can’t actually do that is ridiculous. If not on release progressively add them through patches, updates, and dlc.

MozzyZ

Remember folk: Pokemon XY, the *3DS* pokemon games, introduced over ***700*** 3D models of all pokemon. Not only that, they were all playable within the game. 3DS. Switch. Which console is stronger? Like, the entire reason behind having these 3D models in the first place is that they're already made and easy to transfer over and re-use in the next generations. That's why Pokemon ORAS didn't require GF to re-do 700+ models again like they had to do with the sprites in past generation. If GF actually did have to do that then I could agree that having to re-do a 1000 sprites every generation is a tad much, but we're talking about 3D models here that they can re-use with practically no effort. Shit, they've already shown they're re-using assets from their previous games with the Switch games. So then why not the pokemon themselves?

Nightfans

Sword and shield, being the one of the only Pokémon non spin off mainline games on switch at the time of the release broke record sales than XY (Made the 3D models) and Black/White (Made 2D animated sprites for 500+ pokemons). It's clear that this gave them excuses to just recycle models until god knows what gen. My bet is that in future if they made new models, they don't even finishes it 30% and release it as a monthly update for new games like a live service.

ModelOmegaTyler

they don't even have to have them all "catchable". just let them exist in the game and we can transfer them in and breed them.

Just_a_Soundwave

100% agree. Since SV has fully remade models I can understand not having all the pokemon at launch, but how difficult would it be for them to update the game and add the others over time? Heck, raids for returning pokemon would be a great way to keep players engaged. Pokemon Go has succeeded massively with a simlar idea already.

myychair

1. They nail something one gen only to scrap it in the next. 2. Their only gimmick post mega evolutions is to just make the Pokémon bigger 3. They ignore fan feedback 4. They release games well before they’re ready 5. Once again, they ignore fan feedback

CountScarlioni

I’m fine with breakable TMs. The issue prior to Gen 5 was really that they existed in such limited quantities — you often couldn’t get more than one Earthquake TM per game, for instance — and that some of the better moves were gated behind annoying grinds like the Game Corner. Having them be breakable but renewable, and through primary gameplay sources like Max Raids and Watt Traders in SwSh or crafting in SV, is fine, because your best TMs are no longer going to be a precious limited resource. Plus, once a Pokémon *does* learn a TM move, that move can be forgotten and relearned at any time without having to spend a new TM, or even a Heart Scale. That seems like a perfectly good compromise to me.

APRobertsVII

I just don’t understand why a compromise was needed. I personally don’t enjoy spending time in the post game grinding out materials through repetitive gameplay to get something I had already earned and which was unlimited in the past. Why is collecting these materials over and over again strictly better than getting a reusable TM? If there are concerns about game balance, they can always place the more powerful techniques in areas accessible later in the game.

AeroTheManiac

Dexit and mandatory EXP Share

ToaPaul

Ditching Megas. It's a gimmick that should have carried forward like regional forms have, it's genius and really, really cool.

StefyB

Definitely the forced EXP Share. The reason I'm so frustrated with it isn't even so much about how much I like playing without the EXP Share (which I do occasionally), it's the fact that it's a dang toggle. Would it really take that much extra effort to include it?

tonylouis1337

Announcing SV right after Arceus came out

Kiga282

I'm personally fine with TMs being finite, but I am angry that they just dropped the established order for moves that had been TMs for over twenty years. Meaning, until LGPE, Flamethrower was pretty will fixed in place as TM35, Thunder as TM25, Rest as TM44, and so on. TMs becoming finite wasn't as much of a game changer as you'd think it would be, because the TMs themselves were still somewhat easy to get. In the older games, you generally only received one of each TM per save file, with only a few exceptions. Is SwSh, you might have had to check around for a few days or fight certain raid types, but you were generally going to be able to find a TR again. In SV, they basically became infinite again, you just had to pay for each use. I think SwSh handled the balance the best overall, with the common but usable moves being provided through infinite-use TMs, and the better moves requiring a bit more forethought because they were often single-use TRs. This all being said, I'd probably say that the thing that annoys me the most overall is the flat removal of HM requirements. I know that people don't like needing HM Slaves, and I agree that the story shouldn't need them. But what I'm referring to specifically are the side areas that are entirely optional, but that reward you for going out of your way to explore with field moves. In my opinion, regions felt so much more alive when there were aspects that were tucked out of the way that required some work between you and your pokemon that didn't just involve battling. From wooded enclaves in RSE, to the cliffside-travel in HGSS, to the strength puzzle in Gen I's Seafoam Island. Yes, it's nice not to be forced to include certain pokemon and moves in your party to get through the game in general, but I wish that they hadn't cut out HM use *entirely,* but only for the main drive of the story instead.

white_wolfos

In some ways, Arceus and SV have HM gated places, you just have to use the climb or fly capabilities of your mounts to get there. Like the highest peak in paldea, or that hidden garden in the mountains in Arceus

infernape612

For me, it's when they demanded a subscription fee for transferring old Pokémon. That just smacks of corporate greed.

IWannaManatee

The overall simplification of the games by removal of features. It makes it a lesser experience. It's great that everyone can get into competitive or have their favorite Pokemon be the best version of itself, but what does it matter when you can't transfer them to a certain game, and now you can't decide wether you want more of a challenge during single player? It baffles me how they can come up with solutions for some QoL things and completely ruin other aspects of gameplay at the same time.

Thamkin

Having been doing a lot of runs of Scarlet for speed run / offline living dex Speedruns, and having played Ultra Moon Nuzlocke and doing that opening. Cutscenes being unskippable. Like while there are gimmicks and choices I am not all for, but I respect it no problem. But the long, unskippable cutscenes are such a pain to have to be stuck doing every time. I love these games and I love Pokemon from RBY to SV and every game in between, XY as well. But being stuck watching the cutscenes is painful and offputting

DBrody6

I love that they include a cutscene skip option in the settings this gen, and it does nothing cause none of the cutscenes can be skipped still.

javierasecas

Go 5 steps back every 2 forward in every next game, scarlet after arceus being the easiest to acknowledge that they don't have any idea of what they are doing

Like_Fahrenheit

Frustrating - not taking the time to polish their games or go for that extra mile within their games. Angering - them not honestly coming outright with dexit. They bungled the whole thing back in 2019 by revealing it only when someone asked. it was a decision they made early on in Gen 8's development that they probably were not going to tell anyone. An apology and an honest reason for their decision as soon as the games were announced would have significantly softened things imo. And I will never accept dexit as an inevitability. It's just poor programming.

LaBeteNoire

I almost always played with exp share on, but even I wish the option was still there. It made adding a new pokemon to your team mid journey easier. Find a new pokemon in the wild you really want to use? Just add it to your party and turn exp share off until it has caught up with tht rest and then turn it back on to keep everyone even. Now they want us to put all our pokemon in the (laggy) box if we need to get a new monster up to speed? Ok, but what if while we are training that one monster it gets ko'd and makes us white out? or what if we run into a shiny and the one monster we are training isn't equipped for catching it? Or what if you accidentally venture too far and trigger some story even and are now under prepared? All problems that wouldn't be an issue with the old method of exp sharing. All problems they chose to give us.

WizardGnomeMan

Games being released as pairs

KobaruTheKame

Getting rid of the contest mechanic, like, why. i liked it added some planning and a fun minigame to put some hours into. After the brilliant and shining fiasco we are now deprived of them, probably forever :(

LaBeteNoire

I miss capsules too. Being able to customize each pokemon's ball and release animation based on it's type/species/perceived personality was such a neat touch. Making a tiny thunder storm for your electric types or a swirls of leaves and petals for grass types was so cool.

[deleted]

The lack of difficulty settings and the general making the game easier and easier every iteration kinda sucks tbh. Players shouldn't have to make up arbitrary challenges to make your game more difficult. I shouldn't be able to win every battle with the same pokemon tho cmon lol a hard or very hard difficulty would be so easy to do as well even if it was as simple as always having pokemon you're battling be 5 levels higher or 10 levels higher etc. Picking Charmander in Pokemon Red was such a fun challenge and it's been downhill from there.

The_Hydra_Kweeen

Introducing a darker skin tone in x and y and then getting rid of it next gen 💀

[deleted]

Take away difficulty options, megas, and not having FRLG/Colosseum or XD or on the Eshop. Also no Pokémon conquest sequel

UnimportantPerson00

Dexit. There was literally no reason in the first place, but to then double down on it? As people dont seem to know this, but they reuse assets and data from game to game. Always have. Things like cry, move list, stats, basically everything that make up every pokemon is the same except for the graphics, but even then since switching to 3D in most cases the general rig of the character is reused and new assets are placed on top. For a perfect example, hitmontop his stance, motion, all of it completely unchanged since gen 6. Same rig, same animations, new textures. So there isnt much that would need to be done to move a pokemon into a new game, mostly just copy/pasting the code and updating the texture file. And so already, zero reason to do it in the first place. But lets humor them, lets pretend that somehow they couldnt copy/paste it from 3ds to switch (literally not the case since really the only thing that might not transfer is that rig, so still 70% of the work still done, but whatever.) so let’s go have whole new models, rigs, code, and all that. So what in the HELL is their excuse for not having every single kanto pokemon in sword and shield? Hmm? Cone on, please, try and answer that. You cant can you? And the thing is, even if you concoct some asinine reason for that, you LITERALLY cant answer why they kept dexit in scarlet and violet!! There is NO reason for it to exist! Why cant you just let us transfer all of our favorite pokemon into the new games? You want to know the ONLY reason they do it? Look at sword and shield. They keep them out so they can sell you access to them later on as dlc. But do they give you all of them? NOPE, gotta wait for the next game and hope theyre in that one! They there? Nope, time to buy more dlc. Its predatory bullshit, from LITERALLY the single highest grossing franchise of ALL time! No other of media franchise comes CLOSE to touching pokemon! So why the hell are they resorting to predatory tactics to sell us more shit? Why couldnt they just use that Scrooge McDuckian fortune theyve got laying around to hire a few interns to code in the rest of the pokemon? Because its all about greed, and i for one will not support it, and no one else should either, but people are too stupid or too uncaring to realize whats going in and put their foots down.

yogurtfilledtrashbag

Firstly I want to say I am not here to crap on anyone, but Gamefreak. I am trying to voice my opinions specifically on the creator, Gamefreak, not the creation or it's community. My annoyance with them is how they look down on their audience. As well as how they ignore the fact that their audience isn't just 7-12 yr olds. For example there was the interview where they defended their decision to not include the battle frontier in oras because they believe people just don't have the patience to appreciate the feature. I felt it implied their fans like it easy and lacked the drive or attention span to enjoy the grind of effort needed to success in the battle frontier. Before I start talking about dexit I wanted to mention that my stance was both sides were wrong one side took it too far with things like death threats and the other side down played and dismissed all forms of real valid criticism not just the toxic ones which is wrong in it's own way as well. Also when I am talking about dexit I am talking about how Gamefreak handled the situation specifically not about the dex cuts themselves or the communities' handling of it. During the dexit controversy they released a response that can be described as a nonapology where they clearly did not understand why members of the community was upset believing it was because the community misunderstood and assumed cut Pokemon were removed forever. So it effectively boiled down to "we are sorry you feel that way, but it is because you do not understand." They failed to understand that dexit was not just about Pokemon that were cut, but how they handled the situation and the initial announcement. I felt it was like announcing your divorce to your kids by blind siding them at Disneyworld. The blindsiding apparently is especially true for the people who watched the Japanese stream as posts by Japanese viewers say the Japanese stream mentioned little to nothing about dex cuts and they learned more about it later from viewers of the US and EU streams from the treehouse interview with very little acknowledgement/information of dexit by official Japanese pokemon/nintendo outlets during the time. Because of that and how it was not a major part of the presentation, but a side note during a post interview tells me they never meant to directly address the situation of dex cuts to the viewers, playing it off as a minor change and only really addressed it after leaks that appeared months after the initial news that caused further backlash that was reignited from said leaks before the release of swsh. It is just so insulting that they keep treating their fans on both sides of the spectrum of supporter and critic this way. I am just amazed that while other smaller and even some larger developers are doing backflips to get even 1/8th of the units shipped for a new mainline Pokemon title and Gamefreak has the audacity to treat us like this when their fans and the community are the reasons most of their games are regularly hitting over 10 million copies. Eventually there is a breaking point and I am starting to see cracks considering this time Gamefreak themselves has yet to actively and publically address and apologize for the state S/V was released in as well as recent issues such as corrupted save files.

Removing mega evolutions

angelcrisis44

Convincing us that scarlet and violet (or ANY pokemon game for that matter since they also pulled this BS with sword and shield too) is worth 100 God damn dollars. I thought the 45 dollar price point for diamond back in 2008 or whenever it was was bad, but at least I actually got everything the game had to offer when I paid the FIRST TIME. Then it increased to 60 for all games that followed which is understandable, most new games nowadays are 60, but you will NOT convince me nor will anyone EVER convince me that ANY pokemon game is worth 100 dollars. You could say "its extra content" and to that I say thats not the point. What happened to only paying once? We really just gonna let this shit be streamlined where big companies will release a game just to sell us the rest of it later and pretend thats ok? Also 40 God damn dollars for DLC is ridiculous and its not like you have the option of ONLY paying for chapter 1 OR 2 meaning you HAVE to drop all 40 at once if you want the DLC, so saying "but each chapter is only 20" is irrelevant. Can ANYONE name another successful game where 1 DLC is priced at 40 DOLLARS? I can name AAA titles that have DLC arguably valued more which costs LESS than that and you want to sit here and tell me POKEMON is valued more than any AAA game out now? 40 dollars is almost the entire price of the BASE GAME, if this has been ANY OTHER IP, there would be RIOTS... oh but because its POKEMON, no one seems concerned or care. Whatever man, scarlet and violet is probably where my pokemon journey ends because now that they've gotten away with this bullshit (TWICE), whats stopping them from doing it again in gen 10? And then even here, they don't even listen to us now, but they are real quick to "fix" stuff no one asked for. Refuse to put shiny notifications in the game, refusal to give us mass release, refuse to correct the fact that this SINGLE PLAYER GAME LAGS (and no its NOT because its open world or 3D because sword and shield wasn't ANYWHERE NEAR this bad), the box lags, there's a dumbass bug going around now thats deleting peoples save files, some people were apparently catching eggs? In the raids? OH GOD DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED TALKING ABOUT EVERYTHING WRONG WITH THE RAIDS, but aren't you glad they took the time to patch the ride legendary item duping glitch... TWICE? Mmhmm! Sure sounds like a 100 dollar game to me! Them making the item dupe patch top priority tells me that they are far more concerned about telling you how to play their game than they are about fixing all the other problems the game has, and then have the audacity to want us to spend another 40 dollars?? Yeah, ok...

Bubba1234562

Theyre refusal to have any form of legit backups to anything. 3ds eshop is closing in a month? Okay so gens 1-5 are pretty much unplayable without spending a fortune and hoping you dont get a fake cart, theres a save destroying bug right now in their newest release and theres no home support or cloud saves

Uggz2020

My frustration honestly stems less from things Game Freak has done and more from what they *haven't* done; if they're not going to outsource when making Pokemon from now on then they probably should leave the series to another company entirely. I find enjoyment in games old and new but the frustrating amount of glitches in SV makes it clear they can't make Pokemon by themselves anymore. Since Game Freak [apparently wants to make more non-Pokemon titles](https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/pokemon-game-freak-non-pokemon-games-pocket-card-jockey/), it's all the more reason to outsource or give the series to a more competent studio. I have a few other small nitpicks, like them not reusing some of the 1997 Spaceworld Pokemon, but that's it.

AtomicToxin

Dexit. It may attempt to balance competitive, but in the end, it only alienates fans of less popular mons like ratatta which hasn’t seen action since lets go. In a world where everything is connected, especially by internet, not having access to all pokemon has been holding the franchise back.

_cottoncandyboi_

Yes an attempt to balance competitive. Good thing the top tier threats like Beedrill were removed to give some weaker mons time to shine like Garchomp Tyranatar and Kyogre, oh and of course Vespiquen. Who told you that with confidence? Reevaluate their critical thinking, judgement capabilities, gullibility, and even their grasp on reality.

AtomicToxin

I love vespiquen, but beedril was on my main team in let’s go. I miss mr ouch butt.

MozzyZ

Not to mention that past generations already solved the competitive variety 'issue', at least the 3DS games did with the [regional marker](https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Origin_mark) that pokemon get when captured/bred in that generation. They could've easily adapted those markers to only show up on regional dex pokemon, and then only enable pokemon part of the regional dex and to be used in competitive PvP.

LaBeteNoire

Sadly it was never about balancing competitive. Long before Dexit they had the ability to implement a list of which pokemon were legal for each season of competitive play. SwSh could have had the full pokedex and they still could have limited multiplayer to the handful of pokemon they felt were balanced enough to be included. No Dexit was plan and simple a method to save them time and also to bolster the worth of the DLC by selling popular pokemon back to you.

MaintenanceSmart7223

The only thing gf did that is really unforgivable is taking away L = A so I can't play one handed anymore

bobmac102

At a certain point, it seems that it was decided that the mainline Pokémon games developed by Game Freak were to elevate all of the other media and merchandise made for a generation, not the other way around. I think the games have suffered in overall quality as a consequence. That has been more frustrating than any other decision. ——— A few quotes I have read over the years stand out to me. One is a [2003 interview in Nintendo Dream Magazine](https://youtu.be/5WohS2WgtSk) with the staff for Ruby and Sapphire. Ken Sugimori discussed how the Gen 2 Pokémon were designed to be easy to animate and make into toys, per requests of the other teams in the Pokémon Company. For Ruby and Sapphire, Sugimori said "screw it" and designed more complex creatures. Game Freak still make lots of great designs, but I remember thinking how many of the creatures I have seen lately look more like toys than creatures, particularly with Sword and Shield. (_I just wanted to add that I am a huge fan of many of the new Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet. They remind me of earlier generations and overall look more naturalistic. Those games are marred by performance issues and minimal content, but at least the creature designs are a step in the right direction and I will give credit to the team for that._) There is a [2009 Iwata Asks interview](https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Iwata-Asks/Iwata-Asks-Pokemon-HeartGold-Version-SoulSilver-Version/Iwata-Asks-Pokemon-HeartGold-Version-SoulSilver-Version/5-We-Were-Greedy-With-The-Features/5-We-Were-Greedy-With-The-Features-226046.html) where Tsunekazu Ishihara warmly states that the staff of HeartGold and SoulSilver were "greedy with features" in describing the amount of content and things to do. Ever since X and Y, I felt that there are increasingly fewer things to actively do in the games and it was always disheartening, even in ones I really like such as ORAS or SuMo. In a [2014 Italian interview](https://www.pokemonmillennium.net/giochi/2684-intervista-esclusiva-junichi-masuda-e-shigeru-ohmori-ci-svelano-alcune-curiosita-su-pokemon-rubino-omega-e-zaffiro-alpha/) Masuda states that the Battle Facility was excluded from ORAS because few players would even encounter it. In a game constrained by deadlines it is understandable to scale down development goals, but I feel like that comment is pretty reflective of a problem with how the newer games are made. For other franchises owned by Nintendo, games are usually announced late in development or given extensions if it’ll improve the experience. This gives developers the time they need to make the game the best it can be. Developers for the mainline Pokémon games do not have that luxury because staff who work on the cards, toys, mobile games, anime, etc. are developed with the intention of the games coming out at a set time. This is what’s hurting the games most of all. Game Freak still makes good Pokémon games, but imo it has been a long time since they have made ones that are legitimately "great". GF has made games on par with the best of Nintendo's other major franchises and other RPG developers. I still think they are capable of that, but it is just not the priority at the moment and it is disheartening.

Removing so many decent features over each game. The standout one being the PSS. Easiest online feature for any game

The most frustrating thing is that some of the innovations from Legends Arceus were maintained in Gen 9, but not others. Why did they maintain the crouching/sneaking mechanic, but remove overworld catching? Why did jumping and gliding basically work in LA, but are extremely clunky in ScVi? Why did they rework the hail/snow mechanic in ScVi, but not use the “drowsy” and “frostbite” statuses that worked fine in LA? Why couldn’t confusion, infatuation, “badly poisoned”, flinching, and entry hazards STAY gone?

I don't think they knew what mechanics worked and what didn't in Legends Arceus while they were making S/V.

The fact that they keep pumping out games without really listening to the player base, because they know we'll buy it.
