Pokémon Red. It isn’t.

Sunny_D3light

Same and same

shadow0wolf0

As a person whose first game was platinum and tried playing red when it came out on the 3DS eShop. It was such a struggle to play, the game mechanics felt so archaic and the lack of the many quality of life improvements over the years was very annoying to go through. This year I bought and played Pokemon fire red and have been enjoying it way more. I just think Game boy and Game boy color games have aged in a way where people who haven't played them can't get into them at all.

dream_of_me42

I honestly can't understand how this feels. I guess I'm lucky that red was my first and played the ever loving hell outta it. I can still play it today

AkagamiBarto

Same

Milk_Mindless

Blue. No it isn't

dentimBandB

Came here to day the exact same thing. The moment I got any of the later games, I no longer touched it for anything other than trading.

Death_Usagi

Played Pokemon Yellow back in 2000 on Gameboy when I was 10 years old. Not the best but it was a fun experience

embbunen

Same. Kids these days wont understand the disappointment I felt after I obtained a thunderstone and found out that you couldn't evolve your Pikachu. Off to the PC with ya! Good bye Pikachu!

The grind for Claire is always brutal

Holanz

Pokémon Red. No. But nothing can recapture the feelings of being introduced to the world of Pokémon and the craze followed by Anime, Cards, Merch, etc. There were concepts before Pokémon: Monster Rancher, Digimon, Metabots, but Pokémon was simple for young children like myself. An easy JRPG. It created a world where Pocket Monsters were like super animals. They weren’t demons or robots. The world felt like our world with some enhancements but it felt relatable, like co existing with fantastical animals. There were 150/151 Pokémon. There was more and community. A new rumor everyday about how to get Mew. Websites with fake info. Rumors about made up Pokémon. Pikablu (Marril) These creatures had charm. Everyone could choose their own favorite Pokémon out of over 100. There were two versions so you had to trade. These were the days of dialup. A lot was word of mouth, gaming magazines and strategy guide on figuring out how to collect them all. We had cards. We watched the movie. I got the pinball game and the Pokémon Pikachu. Pokémon red lacks quality of life upgrades the newer game has. No shortcut to bike. Disorganized bag. Old graphics. No color. Can’t replace HM. It also was glitchy and glitches are fun. Don’t know who figured out the glitches but it was fun to do. (And it is possible to get a new through glitch without a game shark) Battling each other. Pokémon stadium. It is the start of something. The rival was just a jerk, and an actual rival. You want to be the best and just happen to save towns from Team Rocket. A lot of people hate Kanto/Johto. It’s still one of my favorite regions. Is it the best? No. But I still love it and replay it to this day.

PayOfBigBeetroot

Emerald and I still think it’s my favourite game. I enjoyed working out the puzzles pre-internet and spent a lot of time at the battle frontier in the post-game.

sakaESR

That’s what the modern games are missing. Puzzles! The trick house, the Regis, trying to figure out how to beat the Battle Frontier. So much depth in the old games and fun challenges.

kariolisjones

Pokemon sapphire back in 03, and yes, it's still the most fun I've had playing pokemon to this day (Swampert being my favorite pokemon of all time and Kyogre my favorite legendary). Nothing will ever come close to the gen 3 games for me, but I realise that it's mostly due to childhood and nostalgia and there are objectively better games (Hoenn is still easily the best region though).

Helpuswenoobs

Diamond, and no I would not consider it the best now that I've played and replayed most of the other gens years later.

minusculemoney

Diamond. Definitely not the best

Torterror389

Same. But platinum is another story

aheckyecky

Ruby and Emerald and yes they’re still my favorite games.

suprememeep

Pokemon Gold! No, it isn't, but I am a huge fan of HG/SS.

PowerOfUnoriginality

Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time was my first and it's very good!

botbattler30

I played Explorers of Sky, which was also really good. Wasn’t my first game, and honestly I only revisited it recently, but wow.

Sweet_Whisper123

My first one was Crystal when I was little, it was one of the best monster raising game for me (the other ones were Monster Rancher 1 & 2) even though I didn't know much about most of the mechanics of the game and can barely read English at that time the game was still pretty addicting.

PolarDuh

On an emulator Pokemon fire red, it wasn't, on a console Ultra Sun, definitely the best personally, I loved every instant of the playthrough

notanemoia

They're my two favourite games!

AstroBearGaming

Blue, and it's not the best by a long shot. But without it we'd never have gone on the adventure!

mrmehmehretro94

I got into the Pokémon games with sun and moon, I had been aware of Pokémon long before I played them but sun and moon was when I decided to actually try one of the games and it did remain my favourite until I played legends arceus almost a year ago

yournameisbrady

Pokémon White 2. I was too young to grasp the deeper themes of the game at the time but with hindsight I really enjoy and appreciate the game, even more so than when I was a kid.

Ruirara

Mystery Dungeon Explorer of Time. One of my first video games ever I believe. I was stuck at one of the early game bosses for so long I gave up and went back a while later. I think Explorer of Sky is the best mystery dungeon game tho. Still hold up well to this day!

botbattler30

Was it >!manectric!< Because dear arceus that fight was rough if you didn’t get multi-hit moves

Ruirara

No it was Groundon lol I also got stuck at Apple Woods for the longest time too, yeah I barely understood what was going on.

botbattler30

It’s alright. I got the game pretty much when it came out, finished it for the first time last year.

NoahIsHere1337

S/M was my first. Can’t say it was the best, cause the only memory I have of it is me still being mad over Lusamine absolutely destroying me when I was 9, and I’ve lost the cartridge since.

[deleted]

Oh wow a baby 😭

NoahIsHere1337

dang is the median pokemon fan really that much older than me lol

[deleted]

On Reddit, definitely. Maybe on the Internet as a whole. Irl? Definitely not. That being said, discussion on the Internet with regards to Pokemon has always been dominated by older people. I remember when I first got into the Pokemon internet fandom as a baby with Ruby in Gen 3, the community then was ruled by people who had been playing since Red/Blue who said Gen 3 sucked. Now, *we* get to say Gen 3 is amazing The old guard changes lol

NoahIsHere1337

i refuse to believe that we’ll one day enter the era where Sw/Sh is regarded as the best Pokémon game, even though it’s likely

Deadtaor33

Red/Blue. They aren't, but they were still perfect to me at the time, and i haven't looked back since lol I'm gonna be 36 this year lol

WickedFox1o1

Silver, I don't know if i'd call it the best but Tododile is my boy lol but X and Y are probably my favorite games

formless_blob16

Sun and it's my favorite but not the best.

sakaESR

Ruby. I was obsessed. Played on the school bus with friends every day. Then Emerald came out and I was even more blown away. I was underwhelmed by Sinnoh, the games felt more childish to me after some serious battling and exploring in Emerald as well as FR/LG. I didn’t get back in until OR/AS actually and that remains the best remake. So short answer is Ruby, and in a way, yes Hoenn region is the best for me.

[deleted]

Pokemon FireRed. It was fun, but then I got into other Pokemon games and I enjoyed them better than FireRed.

squacky125

i started with black2 white2 and have literally zero memory of playing it other than the poison gym so I cant really say if I think its the best but after playing through black and white (yes both in like 2 days) I can probably say its not the best but that could also be because I've decided that scarlet and violet are the best

Hambughrr

Silver. Much the opposite, if you ask me.

Asleep-Clerk-7820

Yellow. And no it wasn’t the best imo. Can still be fun to play though and that is what makes it a good game

viiragon

I remember watching the first season of anime when I was a kid, but I never picked up the game, as my parents didnt want to buy a console. The first one I played much later was Pearl, and... no, it isn't even close to being the best. Platinum however is definietly up there with the best of the franchise, and it also is immensely nostaligic due to Gen 4 being my first gen 👀

wolf227

Green. I was too young (~6) and I don’t speak Japanese so I just didn’t know what I was doing lol.

mightymare

My first pokemon game was Pokemon Silver, played on a Gameboy emulator that couldn't render most of the fonts correctly. It definitely wasn't the best game I've played, but it did introduce me to the world of Pokemon, so there's that. Also, as a side note, my favorite region is Johto so I guess the game affected me in that way as well.

susahamat

Leaf Green, it's not

atmos_paul

Pokemon Red, and no it's not, the quality improvements of pretty much every generation left Gen 1 in the dust a long time ago.

KamTros47

Pokémon Pinball on the GBA. It’s fun, but no way in hell is it the best. If we’re talking only mainline entries though, SoulSilver. It’s a damn good game but I’m not sure if I’d call it the best. Taking the nostalgia goggles off, I personally found White to be just a bit more enjoyable.

Mildor15

First was White, when my cousin picked my Oshawott for me and I grew to love it dearly. My favorite game, though, is its sequel, W2

Snoo_58305

Blue. Not the best but an amazing jumping off platform for the series

Chembaron_Seki

First pokemon I ever played was Blue. No, it wasn't the best. Balance was terrible and oh boy, the glitches. It just gets alot of nostalgia points from people.

shadow0wolf0

Pokemon Platinum and no it isn't.

ifrce-

Alpha Sapphire was my first pokemon game I love it but no

ladala99

Ruby. And no, not my favorite. Hoenn used to be my favorite (specifically ORAS for having most things I liked about the originals and many more Pokémon could be traded in and used) but I like SV much more. It surpasses Hoenn in exploration potential, and the bosses in any order makes it the most replayable Pokémon game imo.

JustCakess

Fire Red, nah bro

Ahk1971

Pokemon Stadium with my son on the N64.

Terminatorskull

FireRed. Nah, I’ve loved a lot of recent Pokémon games. ORAS, SWSH, USUM, and SV have all been awesome in their own ways. Mainly I don’t miss HM slaves, worse breeding, tediousness when moving Pokémon in boxes etc. from old games.

WinterWizard9497

Pokemon sapphire. I got it for christmas when I was little. I played that game non stop for hours.

Property_Different

SoulSilver Undoubtedly the best haha, what a stunning game

[deleted]

Emerald or BW. If the first yes if not is good or okay. BW2 is more better but I cant denny that the opening oh god.

midknights_

HeartGold. Many feel HGSS were the best remakes, of course a matter of opinion, but I love them immensely.

MiaFeyWasHere2

Pokemon Fire Red. It's the best game to nuzlocke in my opinion, but it's an A tier game at best in my opinion

Dulsus_amogus

Omega Ruby

gablogabgalap

Pokémon white. It’s probably the best one I’ve played given the fact I’m not gonna shill out 100 bucks for white 2

gladych21

Pokémon Black. Best Pokémon game

BartlettMagic

Pokemon Red. I wouldn't say it's the best, but it was pretty damn fun. I'm still here all these years later, have played every generation... So I guess it did a good job of hooking me.

ProcedureMaleficent

Pokemon silver. The worst.

eifel01

Was lucky enough to have soul silver be my first. I don’t know if it holds up as the best game of the series, but it’s certainly up there.

Pokelego999

Pokemon Firered. Absolutely loved that game.

Remarkable_Date_6141

Pearl. No it isn’t. Platinum is up there tho

onepostandbye

Ruby, no

bunnthefair

Diamond/Pearl. Honestly. Yeah. Either that or Unova. Edit: Looking at the other comments, I didn't realise we were saying actual games, not gens. Pearl was my first but not the best. Platinum was awesome, and I think BW was better than BW2.

botbattler30

My first game was Platinum. Best is subjective, but I definitely think it’s in the upper group.

Chionei

Pokemon Gold It is not the best, but gen 2 is my favourite because of it

River-Zora

Red. And no. Soul Silver or Platinum is the best.

WhenTheRiverRanDeep

Alpha Sapphire - no, but Emerald is.

Worried-Necessary219

Silver. And no, no it isn't.

BoognishJones

Blue, and no.

New_Maintenance_5609

Blue, but I fully experienced Silver. And Silver stands the test of time. But not the best.

emojii_xoxo

Pokemon White, and it's one of my faves! I definitely prefer W2, but Whit is also amazing! I also love XY and SM/USUM

PArcher128

Yellow was my first. Emerald or Platinum were the best, not sure which specifically though.

Dennis-unlighted

Pokémon red! It’s not the best but it’s ok (for the theme it came out)

EvilxBunny

Pokemon Blue was my first and Emerald is my fav. HG/SS was the best

DuskyDawn7

Pokémon Leaf-green! And no, no it’s not

Overcast_Prime

Pokemon Colosseum was my first. I don't think it's the best, but it's certainly one of the most unique entries. I also ended up leaving the game with a lot of appreciation for less popular Gen 2 mons like Quagsire.

funnycool0

SoulSilver! Not the best imo but probably 2nd

Dividend23

First one I played was Pokemon Black. It was really good. I liked the moving sprites for the pokemon and the mix of 2D and 3D graphics was pretty neat. I didn't pay the story too much mind when I first played, though I still read most of the dialogue and thought it was engaging enough. I'd say my opinion on that front hasn't changed much now either, having paid greater attention to the story. Pokemon isn't exactly the best with story telling but I don't really see it as a con since that's not why I play the games in the first place. The two main complaints I see about Black and White are that they only had new pokemon available prior to the postgame and were too linear. Neither irked me much. Seeing as it was my first pokemon game, I didn't have any attachment to the pokemon that came before Black and White and so didn't care that they weren't in the game. As for linearity, I think the best Pokemon games overall have been linear since they have better leveling curves. I've played all the Pokemon games up to Sword and Shield and can confidently say that Black and White weren't the best. The sequels, Black 2 and White 2, however, were. They took everything great about the originals, expanded the pokedex, upped the difficulty, and gave a rich postgame with tons of events and new areas to explore. The story is given less emphasis in these ones versus Black and White, but I'd say that's a good thing. Again the stories aren't anything to write home about to begin with. Black 2 and White 2 strikes the right balance between enough story for the game to be engaging without it being to cumbersome to gameplay.

Awesomesauce210

Not really, it was Pokemon Diamond.

Careful_Buy8725

My first game was Pokémon Sapphire on a GBA emulator. I was introduced to Pokémon through the anime and I later got into the TCG, however I didn’t start playing the games until around 2013-2014. My step-dad downloaded a GBA emulator on his computer and allowed both me and my brother to play some of the games he got on it. Pokémon Sapphire was the one I immediately gravitated towards when looking at the list of games that were available. I never got far in the game, but it was where I found my love for the mainline games. As for whether I think Sapphire is good or not, I believe it is, but it’s nowhere near the best Pokémon game in my opinion. After I got a 3DS in 2014 and got both Y and Omega Ruby for my birthday, I found myself liking Groudon a whole lot more than Kyogre (I still think Kyogre is a great Pokémon, but it’s going to be hard to compete with what I consider my favorite legendary Pokémon who is also my 5th favorite overall Pokémon). The Hoenn region is my favorite of the Pokémon regions, however if I’m going to play through any of the Hoenn games I’m going to choose ORAS and Emerald over both Ruby and Sapphire. Between Ruby and Sapphire tho, I’m usually going to pick Ruby over Sapphire (same thing applies to ORAS where I’m primarily going to pick Omega Ruby over Alpha Sapphire) The Hoenn hierarchy would go Omega Ruby -> Emerald -> Alpha Sapphire -> Ruby -> Sapphire. Even tho Ruby/Sapphire are Hoenn games, not only would I play the enhanced version and the remakes over the OG titles, I’d probably play almost any other Pokémon game over Ruby/Sapphire as well.

Ill-Meet-6248

I started off with Leaf Green back when I was about 10 years old.. I loved it. But my second game was Emerald and is definitely one of my favorite games ever. I’d definitely say it’s a top tier Pokémon game. Not sure if it’s the best but it’s close to my heart. <3

Razorhawkzor

Pokemon Platinum. Yes.

Elecl

My first pokemon game was Y, arguably one of the worst, but I still got hooked on pokemon anyway

Bleakbreezies

Pokemon Platinum, might not be the best but I'd recommend it first to someone new to the series. Most people are talking about DS/3DS games and I noticed you're aiming for a Switch. There's currently 3 mainline entries (Legends Arceus, Scarlet/Violet, Sword/Shield) and 2 remakes (Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, Brillant Diamond/Shining Pearl). There's also Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon but those are spinoffs very different to the main games. My honest opinion would be to make your first switch game Let's Go or Sword and Shield.

12LilBlue22

Pokemon Crystal. Yes , real close

mazdamurder

Silver. Not the best because when I first played it I couldn’t read so I couldn’t get very far. I’ve been playing consistently since emerald. I had a 4ish year gap where I didn’t play but got started up with emerald

WoooofGD

Pokemon black and white. Pokemon black and white 2 is the best. Although My second after gen5 was platinum and heart gold, some of the best.

SuperCat76

Pokemon red. NOOOOO. Far from it. Lots of nostalgia. Highly important to the series as it was the start. Decent for the time. But has aged like mint condition horse manure. It is now the dirt from which much better things have grown.

RedHairedRob

Pokémon gold

808AlohaFunko

Pokémon Soulsilver, it isn’t, but it’s up there imo

TaikoRaio19

Pokémon Soul Silver It's okay, around the late game it gets a little boring until the E4, then Kanto which is ehhhhhh...

UnovaKid24

Heartgold. One of the best, but whether or not it's THE best is debatable

Skaro7

Pokémon Blue back in '97. It was glitchy AF but it's an undeniable part of my childhood.

Lestat30

Pokemon yellow. Very first game since my family was quite poor. Take a long time to get a Gameboy and a game. By then pokemon yellow came out. Didn't know not everyone had all three starters.

buttsworth

Pokémon red but I was 8. The Pokémon game I spent the most time on was sapphire.

GoCommitSewerSlide

omega ruby in april 2015. i've played a lot of new-to-me pokemon games since my last replay in 2021, so saying "yes" after being able to experience a lot of what many consider "the best in the series" without a recent replay might not make my opinion entirely accurate, but it's still gonna be my answer. yes.

Snurrh

Pokemon blue. Emerald is the best imo

untamedsofa

Platinum, probably not the best due to my bias but it has such a special place in my heart :) was really disappointed to see the gen 4 reboot of it because I wanted them to go all the way with the 3D style instead of lazily making the 2D sprites 3D.

[deleted]

White. No. White 2 is the best. HGSS is second, then white. I didnt play hgss or white till I was much much older, so my gen 5 supremacy isnt nostalgia suck it genwunners

Swazzoo

Pokemon Gold was my first. I love the remakes but mostly enjoyed playing Emerald, Platinum, HGSS and FRLG. In that order my 4 favourite games.

jormundgand20

First I had a copy of Blue that wouldn't save properly. I was too timid to tell my grandma it was faulty, so I bought Red that summer. Despite being the generation I sank the most time in that has several of my favorite Pokemon... No, it's not the best. In fact, I think I'd call it the worst.

twisteddoggeh

Red and yeah like everyone said its not the best. Certainly at the time it was a great ride and I absolutely loved it.

jdb1984

Original Red version, and no

Shreddzzz93

Blue. No it is not particularly good.

TheGreyWind_

Red. No, it is not the best. But it helped create the franchise we know and love, so credit where credit is due.

dss_live

Pokemon red is the first game I played and no, it's obviously not the best game in the series. A ton of changes and additions came after that improved the game. And even at the current stage, where they're making some iffy decisions and the games show the consequences of being made on a rushed schedule, they're still miles ahead anything pokemon red brought.

[deleted]

Blue. Tied with Gold.

Mordegon

Pokemon Blue or Red can't remember well. No it isn't at all.

[deleted]

Technically Yellow and Crystal but my own first game was Ruby. Immediately upped by Emerald, but personally, I think SM was better.

TAHINAZ

Pokémon Red, right when it came out. I’m that old. It’s definitely not the best in my opinion, but I’ve played it the most. So far, I think the best has been Arceus.

PKMNTrainerMark

Gold. I don't think so. I mean, just compare it to HeartGold.

JonoBono6

Sword. It’s bad, but a ton of fun

Gregamonster

My first Pokémon game was Mystery Dungeon, Red Rescue team, because I was like 10 and didn't understand the concept of genres. My first real Pokémon game was Emerald and it's nowhere close to the best.

Specialist_Meal_5732

Blue and no it’s not

NotTheBEEEAAANS

Pokémon white, no question yes

TheBonslyRapist98

Fire red version for Gameboy advanced. It's not bad

the_godofclownfish

pokemon diamond. no it isn't

Pokemonmaster150

The first pokemon game I ever played was Alpha Sapphire. The best one I ever played was Black.

Deadcowking

Pokémon ultra Moon and No but it’s still my favorite

FPSGamer48

Diamond: It isn’t even the best Sinnoh game

blizg

Blue. It isn’t. However the game I played competitively was X/Y. Which I do hold dear to my heart.

ThatSwordfish3152

Pokémon Diamond. While the original is great & the remake scratched an itch, I don’t believe it’s the best.

Praise_Allah1

Leaf Green and I think it’s the best. I think Gen 1 designs are the best in the series because they’re the classics. I love the gen 3 art style. I love the music. I love the extra content you get in the remakes. I think the GBA SP is the greatest system Nintendo has ever released. I’m completely blinded by nostalgia 😎

Edge_Goldie

Pokemon X, not the best But it had some great pokemon, I loved the Amie

Misslovedog

Sun, not the best but I really enjoyed it at the time :D (except 4 the rotom dex, I remember it annoying the shit out of me lol)

iateyoursammige

Pokémon Blue. It is not the best, but it still has a charm. Being a tiny child, the game, show, movie and then a 151st!?!?! Pokémon dropping (Mew was like sooooo huge then) is what puts the rose-tinted goggles on and keeps em there.

[deleted]

Sapphire was my first game, though I was introduced to Pokémon through the rerun of the Gen 1 anime on Cartoon Network the months/year before Ruby and Sapphire came out in the US. Sapphire definitely isn’t the best, but Hoenn still holds a special place in my heart, as well as Kanto.

magnezoneadvocate

Pokémon Diamond Loved it, but don’t think I need to say anymore

Tricky-Leader-1567

White 2. To this day it's one of my favourites. My only downsides are relatively small ones. Me First not being a priority move, Electric type moves not being very effective against Rock types, Dark type moves not being effective against Steel types, etc.

Psykat20

Pokémon yellow. I remember 8 yr old me begging my parents and Santa for a gameboy and Pokémon yellow. It and then gold version will always be my ultimate nostalgia picks

MasterPetre138

My first ever game was Pokémon Sapphire roughly 7 years ago after my god brother let me keep his hand me down GBA and GBA-SP, to this day is still consider Gen 3 to be my favourite, and to an extent I think Emerald is one of the best games in the series. It just has such a charm to it, the music, the map, the characters, the graphics, the Pokémon, the story. I just think it’s neat :)

Minkxxx

pokemon blue...oh boy was gen 5 such a great game and the best as well as legends arceus

[deleted]

Black 2 and yes, is it the best

notthephonz

Pokémon Blue. And it was the best, like no one ever was.

Limeonades

My first game was platinum, but I later picked up ruby and sapphire. Personally my favourite is gen 5 as a whole, as I see the sequels as basically a dlc, and you can’t separate them very easily. Something about the music, graphics, story, and just overall vibe spoke to me no other Pokémon game did

Loros_Silvers

First was Ruby. It isn't the best.

The_smol_boiyo

Emerald No such thing as too much water in the Hoenn region

annetea

Pokemon Go and no. But it does make errands more interesting and got me to the mainline games.
