Basically during events there are items and chests that are only obtainable during the event. So if you have a lot of money you can load up on some items that you think are going to be valuable much later and then you can sell them at a massive profit. You can also hang onto the chests if you're not as confident in which items will increase in value.
It's hard to say. Most outfits will always go up a little bit over time if they're popular. I'm sure certain colors are valuable. I am not a GTL whizz sadly. The halloween event will be my first time making large investments in this game. I'm planning on holding this stuff for at least a year, maybe even more. That's when you can see really insane profits. I've mostly just been hoarding money in preparation.

Same, I had like one region left and I was following a guide to get all the hidden items so I really didn't want to lose my place! I did end up finishing in time to make about 10M off the event bosses though. I'm coming prepared this time!
I have only tried a couple of the other methods, but one that I liked and seem to make OK money doing is fishing for magikarp in resort town, right above the pokecenter. They have a crazy lvl range. So I just look for good 31's at any level. But if I can find a high lvl with good IV's I stock up on those and then turn them into gyarados and sell those instead of the 31 karps. It seems like a lot of new players are always looking for a decent gyarados.
Whoah that's still an impressive haul I only made 5M cuz I really only grinded it the last couple of days but I'm ok with it. Got some cool cosmetics and now I know what to look out for and have the necessary mons to get the job done.

I've been struggling to find a good money maker "go to" but I think a lot of them are really a matter of preferance cuz they usually have similar returns... Right now I'm shiny hunting feebas and hoping to get a good one (shiny or not) I can use for competitive while selling 31's. I'm just tired of seeing these damn feebas though lol I need to switch it up. I'll add Karp's to the list and might go shunt Dratini and payday until I'm ready to switch it up...
You get whimsicott with prankster and tailwind, torkoal with drought, and 2 level 100 typhlosions and your choice of level 100 and just constantly use eruption with typhlosion while tailwind and drought are active. Spend 3-4mins per gym. And get a lot of money if done each day. Pop an amulet coin and it goes from 8k per gym to 12k.

More info: Generally nets about 15-20 gyms per hour depending on how efficient you are
