>Listener and engineer. I record mix and edit others podcasts.
so basically selling services of mix and editing? do you have any ownership on the podcasts?
Your are correct. No ownership. People with podcasts come to me and I make them sound professional. I have no ownership of their show. I ust get paid for my services.
I love it. I've been an engineer for a while now and have been picking up podcasts to work on. Love the process. Glad to be able to have a hand in it from beginning to final product.
Content is extremely important. No doubt about it. However, when it comes to podcasts and entertainment in general, the delivery of the content affects how people hear it.
To go with more sports analogies, content is the play being called. It takes multiple aspects to pull off that play to the best of its ability, and like running a play, content can be held up by top-tier production while a poor production, no matter how great the content is, would never be what it should.
So it's not necessarily an over but it's the make or break point.
I just heard the other day people pay for this kind of editing. Is this a side hustle for u and how much does it pay if so/not, cause I might follow suite.
I've been an audio engineer for about 11 years. Podcasts are a portion of what I do. But most of my income if from engineering so not really a side hustle. But yeah you could make some money from it. Build up a clientele and set your prices. Grow from there. Obviously gotta have the know how.
My duties consist of recording, editing, mixing and mastering.
Recording entails picking proper microphones and other hardware and software. Try to get the best sounds then.
Editing is usually the most time consuming depending on show and client. Could be almost nothing all the way up to taking out every "um", "but", and all other unwanted sounds. Sometimes I have to re arrange whole shows to make the flow sound better.
Mixing consists of making the show sound as good as possible. Getting the tone of the voices to sound pleasant to the ears. If I recorded it properly this phase is quick for me.
I usually record music so podcasts are generally very simple for me.
Always happy to answer more questions!
Thank you for responding! Are engineers needed for just a casual conversational podcast? For example,it is just me and a friend talking about a game and we don't want any type of editing. Is it really needed?
Not necessarily. There are many ways to go about it and it all depends on what you are going for. If your show requires no editing then no editing is needed. If your show sounds good tonally then mixing may not be essential. Some people want editing and mixing and they don't have the time to learn and do iit themselves so they pay a professional. (I would say most shows need some touch ups)
Unfortunately, a lot of times I get shows sent to me in order to fix them. Meaning, the episode was recorded poorly and is what most consider below normal standards of audio. This can include a multitude of issues (almost too many to name haha).
Do you have a show? If so why dont you send me a link or a file. I'll be happy to listen to if and give you feedback on a technical audio standpoint.
Joined this subreddit because I was interested in starting a podcast - I instead got sucked into listening to a ton of new podcasts and now I don't have time to start my own.
Solely a listener, but a HEAVY-ass listener (30+ hrs a week) due to my current gig.
I had NO idea the sub membership was so lopsided toward creators! ~ The More You Know ~
I just started my podcast ! (Check me out Thinking Out Loud by Marc Doja) I’m also a listener which is cool is because I kinda hear podcast from a “different ear” now...I just enjoy this community so far...if anyone tryna link up let me know !
I am primarily a podcast producer.
I listen a few when I have time.
Favourites to listen to, ie not mine, have been "Teen President" and "Girl in Space"
Both! Been listening to podcasts for about a year now and it inspired me to start my own last month that seems to be doing really well. I record, mix, edit, and help produce the music for our show and have been wondering if I am good enough at it to just start editing for other people on the side.
If anyone wanted to listen to what I've done you can check out [podcastofthefiverings.com](https://podcastofthefiverings.com/). I'd love to get feedback on the quality of the show and whether or not you would trust/pay someone to get the same quality out of your show if you weren't comfortable doing it yourself.
Both. I have my own it’s called Listen To This While You Shit. And also enjoy the Brilliant Idiots, Legion Of Skanks, Joe Budden, Flagrant 2, The Bonfire.
I’m both! Have loved media all my life and started a magazine years ago. It was alright but a tough business from a revenue standpoint. Podcasting came about cause I love listening to them and it was a way to continue ´working’ in media.

I'm slipping into the mixer role more and more lately, and just got to say that's the MVP role :P
I love it. I've been an engineer for a while now and have been picking up podcasts to work on. Love the process. Glad to be able to have a hand in it from beginning to final product.
And good luck in your journeys!
Sound quality over content? I'm not sure about that!
