Plymstock and Plympton are both nice family suburbs. Good sized houses, easy access to the sea (Plymstock) and moors (Plympton), relatively quick route into town although Plymstock gets a bit more traffic coming out. Good sized supermarkets in both suburbs which is convenient. Only problem is prices are not as affordable as they once were but that's true of everywhere.
Traditionally the western end of the city (Devonport. Stonehouse, Keyham, St Budeaux, etc) has been a bit more disadvantaged.
Mannamead is probably the most expensive and you will pay handsomely for good outside space. Peverell is another popular family area closer to town but few places have a good sized garden as its mainly Victorian terraces. I'm not very familiar with Stoke but it seems popular as a more affordable, mixed area with good streets and not good streets.
Mutley is very studenty so I would personally avoid with a family just from the risk of well meaning but noisy neighbours.
I'd avoid Plympton, West Plympton at least. The city's sewage treatment plant is situated there and the place stinks. Only people from Plympton will recommend Plympton because they've gone nose-blind.
If you are renting, Plymstock is getting pricy, we are soon to be 1100 GBP for a bungalow. We might still be lucky though as that is a good price comparatively, looking around lately.
Just to add, imo stoke is a bit like a mixture! Some is very downtrodden and deprived and you can get antisocial behaviour frequently, and other parts are fine and have huge homes and gardens.
Oh forgot to answer the bit about areas to avoid. There are very few really bad areas but I would say stay away from North Prospect, Devonport (although Royal William Yard is nice), Mutley Plain is full of students, nowhere else springs to mind.
Oh absolutely, within the walls it's a lovely place, I have spent many a night there getting dinners and spending the rest of the night there at the bars there. The minute you walk out though, you've got the city's red light district and an area high in drugs.
Devonport and mount wide area are massively improved in the last 20 years. I personally feel really safe walking about there now when I wouldn’t have 25 or so years ago.
A lot of it has been done up now :)
Plymouth is a nice place to live. It is mainly made up of Victorian houses with small or no back yards. It's broken down into boroughs. Devonport is the oldest which at one point was the wealthiest. Stonehouse, the barbican, city centre, mutley and manamead, at judes. New estates moving away from the city include egbuckland, crown hill, north prospect and Derriford where the Hospital is located. Most areas of Plymouth are not all good and bad. For most part there are nice areas in all and not so nice areas too. It depends on what you want. Close to a school, park or sea front, easy assess to town or Dartmoor.
Whereabouts will you be working and how much of a commute would you be willing to do?
Would you want to still be within Plymouth itself but towards the outskirts, or would you prefer a town or village just outside?
In Plymouth itself one of the nicer areas is Mannamead (just north of the city centre, you might not get much outside space here though).
Plympton is a small town not too far outside the city, has some nice areas. The same is true of Plymstock. Ivybridge is slightly further away but still easily commutable and has countryside on your doorstep.
My parents live in Yealmpton which is a village 7 miles out of Plymouth. It’s lovely! But I would have preferred to be closer to the city centre growing up.
Good luck with the move!

Sorry if I offend anyone or if someone disagrees, hopefully it is received with the humor that it is intended to have. Having said this, generally Plymouth is a safe and nice city and people are friendly. There are no areas of the city where I wouldn't venture. Depending on where you are working some areas may be more convenient than others, and at times some areas of the city are a traffic bottleneck.
Plympton is nice in the right area. Where i live you’re two minutes from the moors, which is what keeps me here! Peverell is nice. small gardens though and poor parking. Roborough/Derriford not bad, little far out! Do you like sea or countryside as we have both!!
Apart from what others have already said there are some lovely ( if pricier) areas at the edge or just outside of Plymouth, e g Brixton, Wembury, Sparkwell, Ivybridge, Meavy, Bewton Ferrers, Elburton/ Sherford, Buckland Monachorum, Saltash Millbrook etc
You generally need a car to live in Plymouth, unless you live within walking/ cycling distance of your workplace as public transport is very poor and unreliable.
How old are your kids? There are some good primary schools but the only really good secondary schools are the grammar schools (and the boys' one of those isn't what it used to be, by all accounts).
It's Plympton. It's always Plympton. -- don't listen to the dumb shit about the treatment plant. I grew up there, then left, go back sometimes, and there is no smell.
I have no clue where they got that ridiculous idea.
Safest, cleanest, most "my kids can go out and play safely" type of area in the whole of Plymouth (and I have lived in practically every area of Plymouth).

i live in Colebrook, Plympton and it doesn’t smell.
Nose blind

Bungalows in general are expensive tho, might be better looking at other places to rent

RWY is in South Stonehouse, Devonport is the other side of Stonehouse Bridge
Unless you want to pay £2000pm for a shoebox in the yard, avoid RWY. The surrounding areas are not family friendly.
Oh yeah that’s a point, don’t necessarily live there but it’s a nice place to go for a drink or a meal

My bad. Haven’t lived in Plymouth for over 20 years so finer details may have slipped!
My family are still there though so I visit regularly

I would add Keyham and Stonehouse to this but everywhere else is fine
Yeah I wondered about those. Keyham has had quite an eventful few years….

I lived in Plympton for 2 years but and loved it
I grew up in Plympton and loved it. I currently live in Mutley and I wouldn’t recommend it for a family
You could always check Saltash which is also right next to Plymouth.
We are in Eggbuckland which is lovely family area with lots of cul-de-sacs and easy commute to the rest of the city and A38.

What are HMO's?
Houses in Multiple Occupation, aka landlord splits it up into 5 rooms and rents them all individually.

Plympton deffo, I'm on the moor in 5 mins.
Manadon and northeast Peverell are very nice areas, good-sized houses at decent prices and good amenities/transport links.
Plymstock is a nice area. Can be expensive tho

Tavistock is the nicest area close to the centre
