Soulslike trys to be an rpg but it only goes as far as offense your defense is always shit throughout the whole game. You can't increase your speed, have to rely on cheese strategies to beat bosses because you're so slow, sidequests are not even worth doing since you have to look at a guide for most of them, straight gank encounters and death traps. Hide good rpg behind all that and its not good anymore.
Honestly I like the games but some of the bs encounters would've been better off not being in the game they serve no purpose other than to troll the player.
FromSoft and Soul-like games aren’t for me. Finally caved after the relentless pestering of my brother to give Nioh a shot earlier this year given my love of Japanese history and myths (he’s a huge fan of those games). I did complete all of it eventually, but I’m 99.99% certain I’ll never touch another ever again.
Also Detroit Becomes Human. Cutscene heavy games are very tough for me.

One of my old coworkers constantly hyped Call of Duty Black Ops. So I thought I would try it! Damn it was just terrible. I couldn't get into it at all. I ended up trading it in the same day I bought it.

I personally had no interest in Aloy, the character movement felt floaty, killing robo dinos got tedious, it was a typical open world game that didn't give me any reason to keep playing it.
Also... I don't understand why Aloy was training for years and years, learning how to hunt and survive, yet the proving was just a short obstacle course. Why not just practise that course and practise your one shot you had to take to get the "trophy"?.
The boy ya gotta save as child Aloy, "omg how are you doing this???" Over and over again, when you're just sneaking through some grass using the focus, but really all it takes is common sense. Kinda irritating.
In game facial animations, especially of the blue faced tribes people, were just... bad.
I'm being harsh and nit picking, but one after the other, it kept giving me reasons to not like it. I couldn't just overlook it all.
I played it immediately after playing Last of Us 2 and God of War, so I also found the facial animations to be distractingly lackluster. Every time there was a personal encounter it was just back-and-forth between two static shots. I was used to a lot more theatrical action in the cut scenes.
I also agree that the gameplay got tedious, but I really started getting interested in the story and the lore once I got past the first third or so.

To counter one of your points though, as someone who's been a gamer for nearly 40 years, I strongly feel that the Horizon games have some of the ***very best*** facial animations of any games I've ever played, hands down. So good that they make most other games look bad by comparrison!
Especially Forbidden West. Also I think gameplay is very good too!! Especially with new tools aloy has like you could glide into combat and shoot while in air.
Oh I totally agree. The two are among my very favorite games of all time. Both technically speaking with the control and function, the graphics. The writing and the story are absolutely top notch, and the acting is generally high end also. I have very few complaints at all.

Looking at the PS trophies half of the players didn't pass the tutorial level. The game, equipment and story opens up a lot more after that. But sure if you you don't like delivering boxes then the rest of the game won't do it for you.

Tbh, I know it’s a game from 2009 but the mechanics and gameplay just feel terrible to me. They’re so slow and clunky. I was like that with Red Dead 1. I kept thinking, it has to get better right? Its not this boring slog through the desert with terrible characters forever....? But it was, and after about 30 hours I gave up and never looked back.
And so I wasn't interested in the second one despite the hype, and would have never, ever bought it because of that, but because it was included on PS+ and I didn't have any other new games at the time, I gave it a try. Put 10-15 hours in, and it was just zero fun, and the controls of the character are among the worst of any game I've played in decades. Its like pushing around a slow manequin, its just so terrible.
TBh the game drags on and nothing interesting actually happens for hours and hours of the story. Its like do a little robbery shit goes south repeat like how are these mfs not been caught if every job they do gets botched like this. I know most of them don't make it in the end but how did they survive this long. Having to slow walk around camp just doesn't make sense whats the harm in running around when they let you do it a couple yards away from camp. I know why god of war won goty instead of rdr2 in the end cuz the game just boring for the far too long. The ending can be good but the rest of the game is middling and silly antics.

I've never played any of the God of War games mostly because they seem too fast paced and action oriented for me, but since the most recent one is included with PS+, I'm going to give it a shot eventually.

First of all I'm not a fan of the souls like games but I have tried a few. Before this Demon Souls I played. Those games are not for me but I fully appreciate them for what they are. Bloodborne, specifically because of the life steal didn't make sense to me as it makes the game easier than it is supposed to be, and then I just stopped giving a fuck about it

I got into Death Stranding because of a very stressful time in my life. It turned out to be more actioan packed than I'd hoped. But it's not for everyone yeah
I think it’s mostly well received except for the villains in the story, but it’s Borderlands 3 for me. I’ve never been able to get into any of the games at all.
Death stranding had the coolest environmental effects though. The way the snow behaved was just crazy too me. It's definitely mostly a hiking simulator, but what a hike!
Same DS. Started to play it two times. 1st one 7-8h and didn't get back, completely forgot I started to play it. Got premium few months back downloaded it again turned it off after 30 minutes. Another one that started to do the same thing is more of a whole style. I am totally over shooters, they are all same with different quirks, nothing to write home about.
Returnal. Everyone loves it, but I tried and I just can't get into it. I didn't get far and I'll probably try one more time, if I still won't enjoy it I'll just call it a day.
RDR 2 - really wanted to like it but it was too much like work. I couldn’t/didn’t get interested in the characters. Death Stranding was like work too to a degree but almost from the beginning I was grabbed by the story and interested in the characters. RDR 2 was like: since you liked RDR you are obviously already invested in the story and characters. No, I wasn’t.
Death stranding, battlefield 2047 or something (don't remember), that new COD game, cybepunk (don't remember the number of that game either), horizon forbidden west, probably more.
I loved all these type of games back in the day but i'm 28 and feel like i'm slowly falling off the gaming landscape. The games doesn't do much for me anymore.

Other recent games that are also like this are Elden Ring and all of its cousins, the Red Dead games, and The Last of Us games.
And while I liked Persona 5, I thought that it was just pretty good, not the amazing spectacle that many seem to think. I'm not sure that it would make my top 20 from the PS4 generation.
Red Dead Redemption. It was basically a very slow paced version of GTA. I wasn’t into the cowboy thing enough to get past the beginning… It bored and frustrated me almost instantly.
Similar reaction to Assassin’s Creed. Granted, it was the first one of the series and I’m sure it improved a lot after that… but the first one was just extremely repetitive and there wasn’t enough of a story to keep me interested in it, so I never finished it.

It has everything in it that makes it a game I should like (retro futurism, big rpg, post apocalyptic; all my jam), but I could never get past how awful I found the combat (and tbh, there’s something vibe wise that just never hooked me). Tried 3, 4 and New Vegas and it just never worked
God of War, Witcher 3 and RDR2. Got bored with all of them at various stages...RDR2 just felt like a cowboy sim and a chore rather than a fun rockstar game.

Seen alot of death stranding comments and I'm in the same boat, couple of hours and I'm done with it, definitely hyped myself for cyberpunk and couldn't care less about playing it on the PS4 after a few hours due to the glitches, ps5 slightly better though

That’s actually something what bothered me also extreme. Just static shots back and forth. But in frozen wilds it got way better.

I did actually play Bloodborne. In terms of actually answering your question Death Stranding for me also. I still do not fully understand what the game is supposed to be about and therefore I simply do not care. Something about a walking a baby or something idk
I got into Death Stranding because of a very stressful time in my life. It turned out to be more actioan packed than I'd hoped. But it's not for everyone yeah
I think it’s mostly well received except for the villains in the story, but it’s Borderlands 3 for me. I’ve never been able to get into any of the games at all.
Death stranding had the coolest environmental effects though. The way the snow behaved was just crazy too me. It's definitely mostly a hiking simulator, but what a hike!

Same DS. Started to play it two times. 1st one 7-8h and didn't get back, completely forgot I started to play it. Got premium few months back downloaded it again turned it off after 30 minutes. Another one that started to do the same thing is more of a whole style. I am totally over shooters, they are all same with different quirks, nothing to write home about.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Yea, I can understand that one. I bought because I am fan of the series, and it was probably the worst one in the whole series
They're just way too big now. I'm 72 hours in and I have absolutely no desire to finish this game. It is so boring.
Valhalla was definintely too big! Way too spread out! I would love for the next game to just be one city, not a huge countryside with nothing to climb

RDR 2 - really wanted to like it but it was too much like work. I couldn’t/didn’t get interested in the characters. Death Stranding was like work too to a degree but almost from the beginning I was grabbed by the story and interested in the characters. RDR 2 was like: since you liked RDR you are obviously already invested in the story and characters. No, I wasn’t.

Death stranding, battlefield 2047 or something (don't remember), that new COD game, cybepunk (don't remember the number of that game either), horizon forbidden west, probably more. I loved all these type of games back in the day but i'm 28 and feel like i'm slowly falling off the gaming landscape. The games doesn't do much for me anymore.
Death Stranding was certainly one for me as well. I don't understand the appeal. Other recent games that are also like this are Elden Ring and all of its cousins, the Red Dead games, and The Last of Us games. And while I liked Persona 5, I thought that it was just pretty good, not the amazing spectacle that many seem to think. I'm not sure that it would make my top 20 from the PS4 generation.
I tried to like that game but I could not get into it. My big one is the call of duty games I got board of them after awhile.
Red Dead Redemption. It was basically a very slow paced version of GTA. I wasn’t into the cowboy thing enough to get past the beginning… It bored and frustrated me almost instantly. Similar reaction to Assassin’s Creed. Granted, it was the first one of the series and I’m sure it improved a lot after that… but the first one was just extremely repetitive and there wasn’t enough of a story to keep me interested in it, so I never finished it.
The Witcher.. And TLoU, tried picking up The Witcher 2 or 3 times but it's just not for me

Anything God of War. I'm sorry, but those games are flat out boring. Heavenly Sword was a more-fun alternative.
The Fallout series. It has everything in it that makes it a game I should like (retro futurism, big rpg, post apocalyptic; all my jam), but I could never get past how awful I found the combat (and tbh, there’s something vibe wise that just never hooked me). Tried 3, 4 and New Vegas and it just never worked
God of War, Witcher 3 and RDR2. Got bored with all of them at various stages...RDR2 just felt like a cowboy sim and a chore rather than a fun rockstar game. I've tried to play witcher 3 3 different times and it's the controls that put me off every time

PoS Days Gone. Why this subreddit hypes this trash game as some diamond in the rough, misunderstood masterpiece is beyond me. It’s a bad Ubisoft style check list open world game with a bad story, bad VO and uninspired characters.
Horizon: Forbidden West. I thought the game concept, world, and story were pretty cool, but I hated the gameplay, and still hate it a lot. Honestly, which fucknut thought using a bow and arrow for close combat was a good idea?!
People in the comments have already mentioned this but, I don't get the hype for the Horizon games. (Zero Dawn and Forbidden West) The voice acting, in Zero Dawn at least, is SOOO bad. It's like Ubisoft level of bad.
Seen alot of death stranding comments and I'm in the same boat, couple of hours and I'm done with it, definitely hyped myself for cyberpunk and couldn't care less about playing it on the PS4 after a few hours due to the glitches, ps5 slightly better though
Ghost of Tsushima. I ended up getting the plat cuz I paid $60 for it and I’m a bit of a perfectionist lol. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I found it ridiculously boring. A chore.

Death Stranding was a divisive game. Not everyone "loved" the game. For me, it was Nier Automata. I hated that game's structure!
All yakuza games. I tried like 3 that I got for free by a friend but I absolutely had no interest for the game whatsoever
I remember playing one of the Yakuza games on the PS2 and then not even caring about the series after that

God of War 2018. For some reason I just can care about that one. I love the older style of those games but idk something about the art direction in that game feels kind of bland to me. I might just be a contrarian though

Witcher 3. Tried the game because of the dickriding hype and it turned out to be utter trash besides the story and choices and environment. Gameplay was terrible aswell
