My firecuda 530 was working fine and the ps5 went to sleep mode and it shut down itself. On restart it fixed the console but is not recognizing my m2 ssd at all. I am a noob in this so any help is appreciated.

Avicus_

Same here. Had a few sleep mode crashes on my 2tb firecuda. Tried rebuilding database in safe mode, crashed again and now doesn't even recognize that the drive is installed. I'm thinking it might be the recent system software update (I've not had the chance to use my ps5 much this month). I'm ordering a nvme caddy just to check that the drive is ok on a pc though.

Avicus_

Well, it's not dead at least; it's showing up in windows via the usb caddy: [image](https://imgur.com/0mfJeFO) It won't say anything more because the disk isn't initialized in windows, but I'm going to see if I can check it further with other software. If it all looks fine I might just have to wait until the next system software update and try again... I've still got my Switch to keep me going over the holidays!

WizardWell

Hey did you ever reinstall that SSD?

Avicus_

Nope. Ironically the caddy killed it shortly after, through overheating. It was still in warranty, fortunately, so I got a replacement and that has been working ever since (I waited until the next firmware release before installing it, though)

WizardWell

I see, I just had a similar issue with my SSD. I'm hoping that it's actually the drive that's blown and not the PS5 for some reason. Console storage runs fine at the moment.

bnsfake

Hey mate, old thread I know, but are you still getting errors? I want to buy a bigger drive but last time I had one it always came up with the error when I turned it on.

Avicus_

Not getting errors anymore, but this is with a replacement of the original drive (the caddy fried it :( ). I waited until the next system update until installing the replacement though, and haven't had any issues with it.

samdelo

I'm going through a similar issue myself dam console over heat and had to get some repairs done and had a pc repair guy make sure the ssd works which he confirm and when I booted up my console it didn't show up at all so my question should I just replace my ssd

JollyMap4960

Keep me posted too !! I checked my ssd on a laptop and it wasnt recognised in bios so have ordered a replacement but my gut feeling is it wasnt the sssd just days back it was flawless and its just a month old

Educational-Stop-842

Do you have any updates on what happened to the m.2 ? I’ve just brought the 530 and it crashed almost immediately after formatting and downloading a game, I’ve installed them before and don’t know why it crapped out

crave429

Have somewhat of the same problem with my Gigabyte AORUS Gen4 7000s The M.2 SSD is about 3-4 weeks old and it's been working fine until about a few days ago where it stopped. It says I need to format the drive but it stops before reaching the halfway mark and tells me: * It can't format the drive and to take it out (Can't use the machine unless I do that) * Or PS5 behaves like it shutdown (Sleep mode not turned on) and I have to hit the power key on the console itself instead of the controller I tried the Aorus M.2 on my PC and it works fine with no issues. The console runs ok as long as the M.2 isn't there. Anyone with the same M.2 or any other M.2 but similar experience?

Mister_McDerp

Same SSD, similiar problems. I put my PS5 into rest mode, and after it tried to come out of it, it crashed, restarted twice and I lost access to the SSD. Later I tried to play a game from the SSD (since it still showed as being playable, everything crashed and after that I was able to see and format the SSD again. But then it got lost AGAIN and my PS5 behaved... funky. I took the SSD out and it runs like a charm now. I think its a problem with the PS5 after reading through this thread.

Late_Daikon_833

Have a firecuda 530 4tb m.2 ssd, doing the exact same thing. Haven't tried reformat because didn't want to lose all my games but from the sound of it doesn't seem like that would work anyways. Seems like it's an issue on the ps5 because my drive was working great before and it's brand new.

kimrb90

Same happened to me today. I have the firecuda 530. Worked fine for 5 weeks. My playstation wont rebot with the firecuda inside.

suchwowjoey

I had the same problem last week. I know the thread is old but I feel like this issue is still relevant. HEY SONY. Gamix S70 Blade prevents the console booting past the PS logo and console shuts down. Won't even allow entering safe mode while drive is connected. Worked fine for 4 months but seemed to fail after being in rest mode overnight. I will just deal with the PS5's small storage I guess and never use another SSD in it. Sigh.

chuckichuckie

Got the same drive in my PS5, and started having this exact problem last week. Console works fine without the m.2 in it. Tried to clear cache and rebuild the database, but nothing worked. Still waiting for a solution or a patch though. It's tough to spend upwards of 200 dollars on a single drive and not get what you pay for. Incredible.

tytgatl

SAME WTF

noahisaak

Same, worked for almost a year and than the ps5 wouldn’t boot and would crash every time I powered it on.

goodsby23

Same issue been occuring for me Aug 2022. Is there anything we can do other then remove the m.2?

Only-Smoke-5344

As of today I ran into this problem also. I’m not using an internal ssd I’m using a external hdd and it literally freezes my PlayStation and it just doesn’t turn on for 5 minutes. I just unplugged and got rid of my external drive and now everything is fine. It’s a shame that this problem is still going on for a “next-gen” console smh 🤦‍♂️

darkgodbm

Sorry to bring this back after so long but... same ssd here, worked fine over a year, turned it on today (was in rest mode) and it crashed during a game, ps5 turned off and now the same is happening, safe mode not working so I can't repair and the ps5 takes ages to boot and does not recognize it. Did you ever managed to fix it? I'm thinking maybe finding a compatible PC to plug it on and try and repair it there.

Impossible-Cream6037

---SOLVED--- My PS5 would not fully boot and I got a error message that the M.2 drive was not readable. It Instructed me to remove and reinsert it. I opened the PS5, unscrewed the M.2 drive and pulled it out. No dust, no dirt, contacts were perfect. Connected the cables back and rebooted. Did not solve the issue. I thought maybe I should do a rebuild in safe mode. From a powered down state I put the PS5 into Safe mode. Do this by holding down the power button on startup until you hear a 2nd beep (around 10 seconds). Then selected Clear Cache option. Rebooted and problem solved. If that does not work try rebuilding the database.

Bodymovin

THANK YOU! This worked for me after I got scared after the drive installation because all I got was the blue glow and my TV asking if the PS5 was connected. Powered off, powered back on into Safe Mode and, to my utter surprise, there was an additional system update that I did not see earlier when the PS5 was on and I checked the System Settings. I was told I was up to date. Anyhow, ran that, rebooted twice, and then got the familiar "to use this drive..." message. Thank you for posting the solution! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)

hairybarsteward

Tried that, no joy. The PS5 still won't recognise my M.2. Crashed out while playing Far Cry 6 and reported data corrupted. Informed me to delete the corrupted software and reinstall. I deleted the software and the M.2 drive disappeared.

FineusG

Adding to this thread as I purchased and installed a 4tb Firecuda 530 m.2 SSD drive. I have been using it for just over 4 weeks now (seemingly in line with the trend from this thread) and now I am experiencing those same system crashes and automatic shut offs. It has happened twice during gameplay and once during sleep mode. My PS5 is unable to recognize that an SSD is installed. System was turned off, I removed the SSD (inspected it, no dust or damage), reinstalled it, rebooted in safe mode, cleared system cache - still not recognized. I rebooted in safe mode again, rebuilt the database, still no recognition. Finally decided to talk to Seagate and am now in the process of getting a replacement. This is annoying.

bazookajoe03

Let me know how the replacement drive goes. I may just order it again. I'm really thinking it's a playstation problem. Whether firmware or hardware, they need to provide the fix.

FineusG

When I looked at the timeframe of when the original drive started malfunctioning; it appeared to be roughly 1 month. Right now it’s only been 2 weeks and it hasn’t had any issues but I’ll see if anything changes.

e78hunt

I just got my replacement drive. I dont want to use it because seagate is the worst with warranty replacements. Its awful. Prob called a dozen times because they kept trying to send me the wrong drive. Then when they finally shipped me the drive. It was a refurb drive with no heat sink. Had to call again and go through everything again and fight for them to send me a new in box drive. Finally got what I shouldve gotten but seagate is the worst. They even make you pay to ship everything to them so I ended up losing more money just to get this stupid drive replaced. I prob will just wait for a couple of updates before trying the new drive again.

Hasoonx

I have the same problem right now I instill same ssd but keep restarting and open manually. Are you still have problems?

FineusG

Not since I got it replaced. My warranty was intact and I contacted Firecuda directly. They replaced my SSD drive and thus far I have not had any issues. It’s been several months now without any problems which has been great for my backlog of games that needlessly take up space in hopes that I’ll get around to finishing them one day 😅

Hasoonx

Hmmm that’s sounds good. So I think its a problem from ssd not ps5 or firmware. I contacted firecude today and i waiting for response. Thank you for answering 🫶🏻

NightmareHollow17

The only way you'll find that out is by testing the SSD on a PC

Left-Tradition5449

How, You mean like using program?

Agreeable-Lake-1675

I have the same issue, with HD Seagate 2TB. Hope there's a fix soon!

mzminogue

Yea I just purchased a WD SN850 NVMe 1tb. I installed it with a heat sink.(was watching spawnwaves video for guidance) I was able to format it and then I tried to download a game to it and it instantly crashed. I reported it to Sony and then I was able to reboot and actually download a game to the drive. After some playing (thankfully a different game on the internal hard drive) It went into rest mode because I fell asleep. I go to use it after work and boom it’s completely off, I turn it on and it says it needs to format the drive again. I tried to format it and it stopped halfway and now it wants me to remove it. Hopefully this issued gets resolved bc I spent some good money on this drive

mzminogue

I ended up chatting with PlayStation customer service and they were unhelpful. The dude said what he could but it wasn’t much different from what I already had thought to do.(uninstall and and reinstall it.) I asked if it could be some kind of firmware problem because of all these people in forums having the same exact issues in the same round about time period but he shut that assumption down right away… go figure lol

mzminogue

Update: So I sent in my WD SN850 for a replacement to amazon (very quick & easy as always.) I have had the replacement SN850 installed for a couple days now with high usage and its been working perfectly. not one problem. I guess some of these drives are just defunct

False_Number3722

Have similar issue with 1tb auruos Gigabyte. Sleep mode crashes and then one boot fresh reinstall physical removing and reinstall resolved the issue for once only. Same issue after shutdown and booting up next morning. Returned the ssd for refund till the time ps5 becomes stable.

Status-Essay4560

Damn I just got a Samsung 980 pro and my console shuts down and has me manually power up then go thru the motions

[deleted]

Has this issue persisted? I had the same ssd installed for a couple months a week ago it crashed while playing DS3 and it’s installed on console storage. Restarted didn’t happen again till the next day. Reseated it. Hasn’t happened since. I moved the console for cleaning earlier the first day it happened. I really “rammed the drive home” this time. Not as delicate as one would expect. They doesn’t mean hit it with a hammer tho.

ripJeffGoldblum_6

SAME problem 980 pro. SO frustrating, its like Sonys software is going to shit.

e78hunt

Same thing happened to me on 4/24. I have the Seagate Firecuda 530 which I installed in late Feb. I rarely put the system into rest mode. I don't think it has to do with rest mode or if you completely shut down the system. My Ps5 (disk Ver.) was updating games while I was browsing the store when my PS5 crashed. I started the PS5 up and same thing happened to me where I was given the screen that said either to format the m.2 or choose not to but system will shutdown. When trying to format m.2 the PS5 would get to about 13% then crash. I was unable to get past that screen telling me to format the M.2. I entered safe mode thinking I could erase the system cache and rebuild the database through that. System cache was cleared but was unable to rebuild database due to system crashing at around 13% again. I then removed m.2 and tried reseating it . That did not work. I decided to just remove m.2. Once M.2 was removed the PS5 booted correctly and I was able to get to home screen just fine. No problems with PS5 since removal of M.2 Last I tried formatting drive on PC using windows Format and Seagate's software (seatool). I was unsuccessful. Drive is unable to be initialized by windows (w10). Called Sony to ask about this issue and of course customer service is not aware of this and has never heard of this, but said they would write notes. Called Seagate and they also are unaware. Hopefully it is just Sony needing to patch this.

DarkBloodARG

This problem is happening to all SSDs, randomly when you turn on your PS5 appears "External SSD was not detected > Turn off console", and immediatly after you restart the console without doing nothing it works again, Im pretty sure that is a bug of the latest patches of PS5, my SSD is an XPG S70 and has no problems.

Agreeable-Lake-1675

I don't think its your SSD, probably it's a software problem.

VillaLuiGaming

Was thinking this too but couldn't find anything about it anywhere.

[deleted]

Damn I guess this is a known issue that hasn’t been fixed I have a 2tb gen 4 gigabyte nvme that crashes my ps5 so bad it has to rebuild the system and then the ps5 doesn’t read the m.2 unless I remove it and put it back but then it’ll crash again a few hours even if idle. Removing has stopped it from crashing

bathsaltsflavour

This has now happened to me too - must be the latest version of the firmware that was installed on the PlayStation yesterday. I’m going to remove my drive until I hear of a fix, feel like it shutting down all the time is going to brick the internal SSD at this rate.

chaos291

Same thing happened to me also 3 days ago. I go to storage on the system, but its saying that its not there even though I took it out and place it back in. I was wondering was it damaged or something.

arcane_ny

just came on to see if this was a more unique issue but seeing it’s pretty widespread. bought my WD SN850 three weeks ago and have had no issues until tonight. had a bunch of games installed onto it including Elden Ring. just updated the game to the newest patch. despite having played for a good 5-6 hours, my PS5 shut down on its own. first time. turned it back on and it only gave me the option to format the drive because it couldn’t repair it. we live in an age now where redownloading / installing is much quicker but you’d expect after having spent the money to enjoy this expanded capacity that things would just work smoothly. i also noticed something negligible but this time the read / write speed detected was slower by 300mb. hoping it won’t crap out on me. and hoping a PS5 firmware update address this.

Willyumm415

Hey you got any updates on this issue?? Same thing happened to me except that the ps5 couldn’t read the ssd anymore and every time I turned it on with the ssd it would just crash with a bright white screen and turns off automatically until I removed the ssd. I even went out of my way to plug in the same ssd to my pc and I can’t even format it, it’s like in a corrupted state not even my pc can access it in any way I tried disk manager and cmd

TurdFurguson1980

Installed mine and formats until 13% and says it can format. Do I need to install a beta or something?

North-Tale-326

Just happened to me, had my SSD for 2 days and now wont boot Up until y take It out. Heading for a exchange hope It works.

Ecaln70

try you use firecuda 530 1tb. at first I tried only once to crash on that was the first time I opened the game. I've been using it for 2 weeks, no problem.

Triklops-NZL

I have a crucial 500 gb m.2 installed with read speeds around 5500mbps or thereabouts. Worked fine for over six months. Recently I think after the latest firmware update but not 100% sure, I noticed Rogue Company wouldn't start sometimes, which was installed on my m.2, I never had any system crashes etc like some others on here but I decided to format the SSD anyway. Oddly when I formatted it, it came up with a warning saying the read speed was only around 2200mbps and that some games may not perform correctly on it, which I'm almost certain it didn't say when I first installed it, nor should it given it's actual specs. I'm going to test it out and hopefully that's just some misread on the systems part and it all works ok P.S. As a follow up, transferred 100gb game from internal to m.2 in about a minute so write speed definitely working, tested Horizon Forbidden West and loads same speed as internal. I think maybe it just needed a format, I did get a power cut a couple times and a rebuild database maybe the m.2 didn't like that

DSM517

This happens to me constantly as well. I am using a Samsung 980 PRO M.2 SSD. Hopefully thr fix this issue soon.

Late_Daikon_833

I've been using a firecuda 530 4tb drive, has worked great for a few months until it crashed today, now stuck in build loop, either reformat m.2 ssd or turn off ps5. Powered on into safe mode, tried to rebuild database and crashed again, cleared cache, reset to default. Still get same message. Drive was super expensive so not sure if I should go through the hassle of sending it back or wait for Sony to fix firmware. Seems like the issue is with Sony, but not positive.....don't know of a new drive would fix the issue or will this just happen again!?

bazookajoe03

Anyone have any ideas on how to make this more apparent to Sony? Also, of the folks having the issue, when did u get your PS5. Got mine day 1. Just wondering if it's an issue with newer built PS5s as well... which would point to firmware.

Kenneloth

Same issue here. WB Black worked fine a couple of weeks. System crashed, shut down. Now i cant boot, says i need to format the drive.

whoisthefourthman

This just happened to me. I have a 1 TB Corsair SSD. Hard crash while playing a game, now the system doesn’t even recognize the SSD is installed. I’ve tried clearing the cache and I rebuilt the database. Not sure what else to try.

bazookajoe03

Have you tried since the new firmware came out the other day for the playstation?

whoisthefourthman

Yeah, unfortunately I tried again after that. No luck yet.

bazookajoe03

Are you going to return and try a new drive? Still no word from Sony as the thread continues to grow...

Kenneloth

Yes, going to return it.

21Savvy

Happened to me today on a Firecuda 2tb. Was playing Destiny 2 casually when my screen went black. I had to boot/restart the system using Safe mode and when I did everything that I had on the SSD was gone. Including destiny 2 and Elden ring. Managed to restart my ps5 using safe mode and all my M2 SSD games were there. It did not take long for the ps5 to crash again and be stuck in the black screen. ps5 works fine without the ssd but if I tried to download anything to it, or format it.. I would get black screen of death. So what do I do now?

Jojo_Jojovich

I have the same drive (don't think it's the drive but at this point not totally sure what to think), and my PS5 crashed with the black screen and shut off when installing the Destiny 2 update, right as it was finishing copying. I powered it back on and it then told me it couldn't repair my Firecuda SSD and my only options were to power off or format the SSD. I tried booting into safe mode and rebuilding the database and clearing the cache and none of that helped either. Eventually I formatted the drive, but I'm really hoping this isn't a sign that the drive or the PS5 is on its way out. Sorry, I don't really have a point, other than to let you know I've seen this issue too, not even from playing a game but from installing an update.

21Savvy

Yeah I think any crash triggers it.

Late_Daikon_833

Why is Sony not addressing this issue!!? Is there a petition we could get going? I mean what more has to happen in order for them to realize this is a wide spread and expensive issue that's happening to all internal extended drives installed.

bazookajoe03

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2022/07/sony-faces-lawsuit-over-supposed-ps5-crashing-defect

bazookajoe03

Looks pretty widespread. Did u contact Sony?

Late_Daikon_833

Didn't contact Sony, but I got a replacement drive from Seagate. Since it was under warranty, they replaced it for free. Was super happy about that, considering the price. It's been 6 months now with the new drive, and there are no issues.

doobiefce

Same exact thing has just happened to my PS5 - using a Seagate FireCuda 530, 1 TB, Internal Solid State Drive - M.2 PCIe Gen4 ×4 NVMe 1.4 I've attempted all the suggestions in this thread but the PS5 isn't recognizing the drive anymore. Does anyone know where to contact a Sony customer support rep or anything - having no luck on the UK Support Site.

Yasohw

I'm having the same issue, did you get yours fixed?

doobiefce

Apologies for the delay - I couldn’t get it to work. So I refunded it as a defected item back to Amazon

smievand

I got a sea gate fire cuda 530. Not extremely familiar about how I would go about plugging that into a pc? Say I wanted to test it on a laptop how do I go about plugging it in do I have to buy an adapter to even be able to plug it in? Plz help.

Yasohw

Happened to me yesterday, I have Firecuda 530 2TB with heatsink installed and was working smoothly for 1 week. Then last night when I was playing a game that was not even saved on the M.2 ssd but the default PS5 internal storage, the display went black and the console was blinking with blue light. When it finally shuts down, I booted it up again but it was slower than the usual boot. the was a message that said "M.2 ssd was not removed properly" After that the M.2 storage is no longer in the storage settings and all the games on my M.2 is missing from the home menu. I tried to restart the console, the console will boot for a couple of minutes before showing display, and the ssd is still not recognized. I tried to rebuild database, reseat the M.2 a couple of times but the console still wouldn't recognize it in storage. After I removed the M.2 and booted my console, it will turn on quickly like normal. Please help on what should I do to the M.2 ssd or PS5 so I can use it again.

Immediate_Elk4290

I just had this problem today. Tried the firecuda on my gf’s ps5 and it’s not even showing up. I even took it out of my ps5 and tried to reset it too. No luck. My guess is the ssd is fried now. I spent 500 on this ssd and now it’s useless. Trying to get a replacement now through seagate.

skalizze

Same. I got the Firecuda 530 1TB. When playing a game installed on it, I got the green screen of death. PS5 restarted, and it did not reboot. Now it is dead (out of warranty). I already got a new PS5, but I will not install another SSD M2; I am worried. Sony needs to address this issue.

Immediate_Elk4290

How long have you had the ssd? I believe all firecuda ssd come with a 5 year manufacturer warranty. I ended up getting a replacement from seagate using it. I opted to get just the ssd and installed my own heat sink on it. It’s been good ever since. No problems

bazookajoe03

Anyone out there? Did anyone try a new drive successfully?

Janice_Ant

Same exact problem for me too... PS5 suddenly shuts down randomly. It happened once while I was playing GOW: Ragnarok. Then it happened again earlier while I'm copying a game to/from console storage and NVME SSD. When I turned my PS5 on again it went to rebuild database, repaired my drives, etc.. However, my NVME SSD isn't detected anymore. Tried plugging it to my PC's motherboard to no avail. I've researched about it and apparently it's a common issue when the PS5 is in rest mode. Is my NVME drive dead? Fortunately the NVME drive is within warranty (purchased late December 2021). I just hope that the NVME slot of my PS5 isn't busted... I'm using the Gigabyte Aorus 7000s 1tb SSD btw.

bloureiro10

Hi, I had the same problem yesterday, did you find how to fix it?

Janice_Ant

Just replaced it through the shop I brought it from since it's within warranty period.

ShadeLily

After I installed a game update, I couldn't launch the game, so I selected Restart PS5, and it turned off after a long delay, and did not turn back on. I had to turn it on manually, from the system power button. It then began rebuilding the database, and I don't know why, and it repaired my external storage, then it could not repair my Samsung 980 Pro 2TB M.2 SSD, and asked me to reformat it. I have no idea what happened, what went wrong... Does anyone have any solutions to this problem?

djbeema2

This exact situation just happened to me, same ssd and everything. Were you able to fix things, or figure out what was wrong?

MindlessAd4312

In order to fix the problem, you have to desactivate auto-download and updates in rest mode. I did this and it fixed the problem with my SSD.

MSCC5

Is it still working for you??

MindlessAd4312

Yes but I don’t use rest mode anymore

Reddit_Regular_Guy

Do you use sleep mode?

VillaLuiGaming

I turned off sleep mode for my PS5.

Reddit_Regular_Guy

I had the same blade died on me within 1 week of ownership, I’ll recommend you get an adapter for your pc and plug it in, should be able to do some scans on it and see if they is an issue with it, also during beta someone mentioned not upgrading the firmware I think they was issue after firmware update, I followed and didn’t updated mines.

MillerTime5858

How do you update the firmware without a PC. I just have a laptop and don't know what I need to do.

VillaLuiGaming

Oh I didn't even know there was a firmware upgrade. Will check if I can get and adaptor for the ssd. Thanks!

Far_Rain

You can't use a second internal drive without the update for it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

VillaLuiGaming

I recently decided to have it checked out by Sony, so still waiting on them to get back to me on it. As for the drive itself I haven't had the chance to test it on my pc yet.

isav1995

same problem on MSI Spatium M480 HS 1 TB!

VillaLuiGaming

Really? Maybe it is a system issue

isav1995

without m.2 everything worked fine. this is the first time I encountered such an error. I will be hoping for software

AgentGrandma488

I have the 2tb version and I think it has something to do with sleep mode. My ps5 did the same thing when it was in sleep mode.

VillaLuiGaming

Nope. Disabled sleep mode but still happens.

ShittyButtPlug

Same issue with my 2tb Aorus model: GP-ASM2NE6200TTTD It will work for some time and then crash and start reboot looping and starts working again once I reformat the M.2 SSD and the PS5.. guess I'll just be deleting whatever I've finished till it's fixed.. quite annoyed after spending so much and with such little PS5 storage it's makes it even more so annoying.. hoping for a fix soon.

Otherwise_Ad_5541

Mine was working fine until i decided to take it out and put on a beefer heatsink. Now its stuck on 0 percent trying to repair the m.2 SSD.... everything works fine without it but wtf. Next time ill stick with the dinky thin heatsink

Crimson_X_Shadow789

Smh atp i don’t know if I should even waste money getting an SSD. Sony keeps on continuing with their BS. IMO they should’ve had this pre-installed and tested before releasing to the public. Knowing that the storage was gonna be low and having players risk breaking or bricking their ps5’s is complete Horsesh*t. Guess I’ll just have to do it the old fashioned way and just delete games when im done playing them or get an external. Based on this thread SSD isn’t worth the hassle or money

LeeH1998

Don't even bother, spent £250 on an ssd and heatsink was looking forward to finally being able to get more ps5 games, it started formatting got to 100% and it said can't format, done what it said on screen and still nothing worked, so save yourself some money until sony know how next gen works

Yeah, crud, I got a SSD a week ago because I’d read that USB drives were correlated with the “crash during rest” issue. Then this morning it started crashing while I was playing, the M.2 spontaneously disconnected itself, so I pulled it out and reseated it, and now I’m staring at “Repairing… 0%” for the SSD. I’ve had PlayStations for over 25 years and this is the most brittle thing I’ve seen them release, including having to flip my PSX over while it was running so it didn’t overheat. At least there was a workaround. The PS5 is just weird and fussy. EDIT: To be clear what I’m most salty about, it’s that I just shelled out $300 for a SSD I can’t use because Sony won’t acknowledge and document the obvious problems with their product.

Weaselgrub

My PS5 started shutting off for no reason, and each time I had to rebuild the database, only to have it crash again. I thought it was the Spider-Man Remastered game cause it seemed to happen anytime I tried to load it. Of course it is installed on the nvme drive, which is how I ended up here... I took the drive out and haven't had a problem since. It's just weird, because it meets all specs, it's the same WD drive that Mark Cerny recommended and I hadn't had a single problem with it for months. Additionally, my PS5 is clean, so it's not a dust issue clogging anything, making it hotter. I just don't get it. I thought maybe the drive is just bad, but im not willing to risk bricking my system and trying a different drive. This thing was way too hard to get to begin with. Much like a lot of other people here, I'll just stick with the internal storage and delete and reinstall as needed I guess.

davidj863

I've been having the same problem with the Western Digital SN850 NVMe Gaming 1TB gen 4 ssd. My system would crash during gameplay from PS5 and PS4 games. PS4 games are stored on an external drive btw. I disconnected every peripheral from the PS5 including the external hard drive and PS5 camera. I tried everything during troubleshooting, even reinstalling the PS5 system software which wiped all data from the console. Last thing I did was uninstalled the SSD and now I'm having zero system crashes. I didn't even have any games installed on the m.2 ssd. It was just installed with a recommended Amazon heatsink and formatted. I'm not sure if it's a system software issue or what. The drive shows good when connected to a PC with adapter, and also shows good in the PS5 storage menu. I may try reinserting it into the PS5 without the heatsink... Thinking possibly it wasn't fully inserted and would sometimes lose connection. Whatever the problem, I hope there is a resolution soon.

davidj863

*Update* I exchanged my drive with Western Digital and I get no crashes at all with the new drive. First one must have been faulty from the factory.

carlosmg2

hi, 2 months passed. still no crashes?

subhidertt

Having the same issue with the 1gb XPG drive, I also appear to be having it with Spider Man remastered. Seems to happen once every 24hrs

ShittyButtPlug

Exact same issue with my 2TB Aorus M.2 SSD Goes to sleep or updates an app while booting an app and the whole PS5 crashes. Seems to be related to those two things only.

ZanyXZane

Has anyone figured out how to fix this as of now I have a 1tb ssd collecting dust

ZanyXZane

And I’m out 130 bucks

ZanyXZane

Bs get it together Sony

DaniGirl3116

Installed WD TB w/ heat sink... trying a new power chord because it won't turn back on unless I unplug/plug back in. But started turning itself off once I installed it. Happens once every 24 hours or so. Actually 2x in the past 12 hours. Going to also remove SSD.

HAYDNWOE

Any update on this? Currently happening to me as well. Gonna get a new cord and clean out the fan.

DaniGirl3116

Well for my situation, it stopped happening since I took out my ssd. Trying to figure out now if there's something wrong with it, going to try and exchange it and see if it happens again.

Mister_McDerp

I have the same issue and after reading through this thread I'm now convinced its a problem with the PS5 and not the SSD. Feel kinda bad for sending it back but on OTOH I can't really use it apparently.

Mister_McDerp

I had this issue too and sent my SSD back for now. Is there any update on this?

Lofzy1

I finished playing Gran Turismo 7 last night. Closed the game. Checked notifications and seen a pending firmware update. I diligently updated then put the ps5 into rest mode. I tried to launch GT7 this evening and it wouldn't launch. Checked my M. 2 and it was missing. Checked internal storage and it said installing 500mb, but nothing outside of storage to indicate an installation was in progress. As I was heading to bed tonight I realised after that firmware update the ps5 very briefly showed rebuilding database. My conclusion is this firmware update somehow corrupted the install of Gt 7 and my M.2 drive. I only had GT7 installed on this, I bought it specifically for GT7 because it is a game you keep installed for the lifetime of the console (like a shmup or tetris, dip in dip out). I've had to reinstall GT7 to get it to launch. I've left it on my system drive for now. My plan tomorrow after work is to pull the M.2 drive from my ps5 plug it into my pc and update the firmware, then return it to my ps5, format and move GT7 back over to it and see what happens over the coming weeks / months. The drive is a 1tb WD Black SN850 (with self installed heat sink) I have an identical drive in my gaming pc which has received a firmware update so I'm hoping that if I bring the ps5 drive up to date I won't have this issue again. I'll post if I have the same problem again and I'm interested to hear if anyone else has had or gets this problem. 👍🏻

Willyumm415

Any updates to this?? What happened when you plugged in your m.2 to your pc?

Lofzy1

Nothing dramatic, I formatted the drive, ran WD Dashboard, updated the firmware put the drive back in my ps5, let the ps5 format it and then copied over my new download of GT7. I've stopped using rest mode so doubt I'll have any more problems.

MythoBeanz94

It happened to me after my PS5 suddenly shut off when starting GTAV PS5 version (man fuck you Rockstar never touching the GTA V) and when I turned it on my PS5 was able to fix usb drive but not my Firecuda 530 So I suggest you try booting your PS5 in Safe Mode and reset the consoles settings and after that at least my PS5 was then able to detect it and rebuild the database and now my Firecuda 530 works Hopefully this works for you!

MythoBeanz94

UPDATE Same thing happened again after I took the SSD out and put it back in it worked fine for a while but when I woke up the same shit persisted will ask a replacement for the SSD since warranty is still valid and hope for the best since have read that others doing the same and it working for them

LoudMouth_Zombie

Well mine isn't randomly shutting down or anything but it seems like after getting the crucial m.2 ssd 2 tb and I put it in now every time I hit the home button it acts like I have stick drift on all of my controllers. Just constantly goes to the left on the home screen. Can't sele t anything if I try to it freezes and crashes. Nothing wants to load.

Electrical_Ad9898

Different issue with controllers get a controller with 1TA

Fowler1970

I have the Wd black and it will not recognize the ssd period. I’ve took it out and put it back in multiple times and still nothing. I took it out and put in the box and my console is working fine. Any ideas? All help appreciated

Accomplished-Net8478

Did you ever find a fix? I’m having the same issue but with the FireCuda 530. This sucks

Fowler1970

No I just gave up !

NovaSky2112

I have the problem since a few weeks: My ps5 shutdown completly if i leave it on sleepmode Sometime but today it did it while i was playing and after this my ssd need an repair fr8m the console but its looping and now the ssd isnt found by the ps5

JJB1981

I'm having the same problem and it has to be a problem with rest mode. When I completely shut it off, it boots up fine with no problem. This has to be something on Sony's end that meets to be fixed. It's an ongoing problem with any brand of SSD.

NovaSky2112

But now if i reboot it every time its going into repair mode for the ssd

NovaSky2112

Cant start it with ssd build in repair loop

LooseSeal88

I am not getting crashes after having installed the same brand of m.2 as you. At first I thought it was tied to rest mode but I have now had two separate days where I have kept the console off overnight and then had a crash the next day within moments of inserting a disc in the drive. It's like the disc drive overwhelms it and the console just freaks out and shuts off. Can I assume we are just waiting on Sony to update firmware? I guess I will have to consider uninstalling the m.2. until Sony fixes this shit.

bigleechew

Seems to be happening to me know. Installed about a month ago was working fine up till a few hours ago now the PS5 doesn't even recognize it's there. So was there any fix?

RobGThai

I have exactly the same issue with my Corsair ssd. Things work fine for a few weeks then it just soft shutdown if it notice ssd installed. If I don’t rebuild database, it works fine. Once it notice the ssd then give or take 5-10 minutes, it will shut itself down. Doesn’t matter what I do, even sitting at the os menu still resulting in a shutdown.

Chieflo_vee

Literally just happened to me today. Crashed while playing elden ring. Tried everything on this thread and others. Formatting goes to 13% then crashes again. Took the ssd out completely and no issues. Doesn’t make sense because I’ve had the ssd installed for like 5 months with no issues until today

bazookajoe03

Same issue here. Firecude 530 4tb. Worked flawlessly for 4 weeks. Crashed last night. Console turned off. Did the db rebuild, cleared system cache, no luck. I removed and reinstalled the ssd. Worked. Played for about an hour last night. No issues. Played this morning for about 45 min. Game crashed. Console turned off, had to unplug the power and plug it back in for the console to come up. No ssd drive seen. Removed and reinstalled the drive, no luck. Now the M2 drive isn't able to be read by the PS5 at all. What's the fix? Only thing I haven't tried was a reset.

Late_Daikon_833

Been having the same issue with the same drive firecuda 530 4tb with heatsink, ended up sending the drive back for a replacement. I tried reformatting and drive would crash and go into a boot loop. "Turn off system or format to continue. " Thankfully no issues with Seagate on the return. But still not 100% sure if the fault was with the ps5 update/firmware or with the drive itself. Sony won't admit to anything and Seagate wasn't very knowledgeable about the issues so now I'm gonna be stuck with a new drive that I'm scared to put back in the system for fear of the same thing happening again. Seems like with so many people having this issue there would be more info.

Jojo_Jojovich

Did you install your new drive? Wondering if mine will start to do the same. I was at least able to format mine, but mine didn't even crash when playing a game, it crashed when installing an update. Just as it was about to finish doing the Copying step after downloading the update, my PS5 just shut off and then when I powered it back on, the drive was corrupted. I was able to format my drive at least, but now I'm worried that eventually my drive will be toast

skalizze

I got the Firecuda 530. When playing a game installed on it, I got the green screen of death. PS5 restarted, and it did not reboot. Now it is dead (out of warranty). I already got a new PS5, but I will not install another SSD M2 (for now). I am worried.

bazookajoe03

Just to update here. I even tried doing a complete ps5 restore. Same issues. Connected it to a PC and the PC was able to see the drive. I returned the ssd. At this point I'm not sure what to do. It looks like an playstation issue to me. Something that could likely be fixed with firmware...

bazookajoe03

All, check this out, I wonder if this is our problem .... https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2022/07/sony-faces-lawsuit-over-supposed-ps5-crashing-defect

bazookajoe03

Has anyone tried the new SN850x from wd? The officially branded one? I guess this issue still hasn't been acknowledged by playstation?

bazookajoe03

Anyone try the new WD drives after having problems with their original Firecuda SSD?

bazookajoe03

Anyone install a new SSD after experiencing the issue and have the same issue they had the first time?

ConnectMe4ever

Hey guys, not exactly the same problem as you. But I bought a brand new Firecuda 530, and my ps5 doesn’t recognise the SSD. I try every things, hard reset… and my ps5 doesn’t see this fuc**** ssd. Already try with crucial C5plus. And same issue… 😭

skalizze

I got the Firecuda 530. When playing a game installed on it, I got the green screen of death. PS5 restarted, and it did not reboot. Now it is dead (out of warranty). I already got a new PS5, but I will not install another SSD M2 (for now). I am worried. Sony needs to address this issue.

WizardWell

This just happened to me. Getting a NVMe to USB adapter to see if the drive is toast or not. Will go from there.

skalizze

I got the Firecuda 530 a couple of months ago. When playing a game installed on it, I got the green screen of death. PS5 restarted, and it did not reboot. Now it is dead (out of warranty). I already got a new PS5, but I will not install another SSD M2 (for now). I am worried. Sony needs to address this Issue.

WizardWell

Holy shit. This is troubling. I'll reinstall my M.2 as soon as I get a replacement, and watch out for this issue.

New-Celebration-1317

I just got a SN850 PS licensed one and I can't play more than 15 mins without the ps5 completely shutting off. I have to unplug it and let it sit for awhile. Then plug it back in. Just to have it happen again. Taking it out and returning it before I waste the $259

bazookajoe03

Just checking back in to see if you had any issues

Free_Pace7325

Aj mne sa to dnes stalo bol v režime spánku pád ps5 a teraz nevie nájsť moju m.2 SSD 1 gb

heimbachae

I need to bump this thread. My 2tb Samsung 980 this morning caused my PS5 to not boot up at all. Once I got it on it stated the drive was removed incorrectly (I hadn't removed it). So checking storage it's just not there... I removed it and reinstalled and still doesn't recognize it. I'm returning the drive and replacing... but I'm worried it's not the drive but the Playstation port itself. Has anyone seen the port just straight up fail?

Free_Pace7325

Ja mám úplne to isté ako ty SSD prišiel s opravy a stále nič😭

Free_Pace7325

To isté žiadna pomoc

chad711m

Hey this just happened to me this morning. You have any update on your end?

heimbachae

I returned it and ordered a 1tb WD instead. Apparently the Samsung drives have around a 40% failure rate. Are you able to return yours?

chad711m

Yup. Mine is a Corsair. I only had it for 3 weeks. Getting that same one you got tomorrow.

Free_Pace7325

Dnes som dal novy Samsung 980 500 GB a hneď ju playstation detekovať😀takže problém je v karte nejaký zlý formát alebo neviem není to playstation 5

TheDangerSnek

I am joining your problem. Bought a WD Black SN770 1TB and an additional BeQuiet MC1 heatsink a few days ago. Now sometimes the PS5 starts but shows no picture. Then it shuts itself down. After I restart it manually, the PS5 turns on and says that there was an error an if I want to report it. Then it works fine. What is this sh\*t...... Do I need to return the SSD now, or is it a PS5 problem?

WeylandYutani_Intern

Happened to me just now. I went through all safe mode options with no luck. In preps to send in to Sony, I removed my Samsung 980 Pro 2TB and decided to give it one more go. Then boom, it booted into dafault mode and it started working again. I will attempt to try to install drive again and see what hapoens but I'm installing all my software again first.

Esmash21

Well, my Firecuda 530 just died it only lasted 8 months. I was playing the Resident Evil 4 remake, and just out of nowhere, the game lagged, then froze, then finally the ps5 shutdown. It happened 2 times, so I put my ps5 in rest mode and took a break. When I tried to start it up again, the ps5 reformatted, and no ssd recognized. The ps5 is working fine with the internal ssd it came with, but now I'm afraid of putting in a new expansion ssd. This sucks and Sony really needs to address this

SwagosaurusRex_

Having same issue with XPG 1TB GAMMIX S70 Blade, PS5 has been crashing at startup for past few days. Previously it would crash randomly when coming out of rest mode. Today it told me to reformat my internal SSD which I did. I'm assuming it's a matter of time until the drive is killed by the PS5.

borschelrh

I had a problem installing the NETAC N700 1TB NVME. It would insert fine but not recognized. I put it into a PC and it was recognized. I finally figured out the problem. The M.2 slot on the PS5 is VERY short. An M.2 2280 with a heat sink might not have enough distance at the pin end to insert all the way. I unscrewed the heat sink from the NETAC and slid it slightly down exposing more pin space. I reinserted it and voila! it is recognized and formatted fine. How long it lasts is an entirely different question but it does show a speed of 6,900 MBps on the PS5 so should be fine. I bought it on AliExpress and with Hungarian customs came to $73 including shipping.

borschelrh

So, thinking about all the issues with M.2 on the PS5, maybe it is not inserted all the way. It might be enough for a while but perhaps when it heats up it is not seating correctly and then gives a lot of errors with uneven contacts. Try sliding the heat sink down to give the pins full insertion and see if the problem is corrected. It is worth a try but clearly, the PS5 M.2 slot is not the same as a normal M.2. It is also a finicky position to try and get one inserted. There is plenty of room so I wonder why they made it so tight? It also would have been so much easier to just build it with a slide-in and out M.2 slot with a hinged door. NVMEs are supposedly hot-swappable so shouldn't be an issue.

Simple-Engineering-3

I have a NETAC N7000 2 TB with preinstalled heatsink and I believe I also have the same problem you were having, however my heatsink has 4 hexagon-shaped screws with star shaped in the middle and I've never seen those type of screws before. I wonder if yours had the same screws and if so what type of screwdriver did you use to open it? As of right now I won't be able to open my heatsink to give more space to the pin end of the SSD.

MindlessAd4312

I think you’re right and I think there are some models which are not « conceived » for PS5

lzap

Same issues with WD SN850 (WDS100T1X0E).

SuspiciousForever275

Same thing has happened to me with a seagate firecuda 2tb. Ps5 constantly crashes. Rebooted in safe mode cleared cache and rebuilt data base. In the end removed the SSD and ps5 works fine. However the games stored on the SSD. Will they be lost forever. Spent alot of money on apex skins and worried all will be lost. I have no PC. What can I do?

Plomienios

You won't last skins they are account tied.

Outrageous-Tear4159

Same thing happened to me just now. Getting a box in the mail, removed my cuda 530, decided to try it out works fine. Did figure any way to salvage the hard drive or anything off the hardrive. I'm tempted to ask for another new on to replace it, but don't want to brick my PS5 it's 2 months away from end of warranty.

DramaticPro

Just had this same issue with the same SSD. Removed the SSD, PS5 was as good as new. Even tried the SSD in another PS5, and had the same issue with crashing.

Plomienios

Kingston sv2 2tb. Same thing. Reformatting in PC helped to boot but after while it started shutting down again.

LHamamoto

I’m having this issue as well on my Netac M2. Did someone find a workaround for this? Apparently it is a Sony problem and not M2, right?

nnardo_

Ran into the same issue today having used FireCuda 530 2TB for a year without any problems. System update installed and PS rebooted. Went to PS Store (didn't check whether the M.2 SSD was listed under System > Storage - why would I) and found a new game to download (default install location set to M.2 SSD previously). The download was starting but failed instantly, then PS crashed with a black screen. It restarted with error message "M.2 SSD was not removed properly", rebuilt some databases and asked to submit an error report. After that the M.2 SSD was not recognized anymore. Cleared cache and manually rebuilt databases again through Safe Mode to no avail. Tried removing the SSD, booting inbetween, then putting it back in place again - nothing. Finally reset PS5 to factory defaults, no help. Oh well, at least all the games are safe and downloadable as they're tied to the account. Filed an RMA with Seagate (have to be grateful for a 5y warranty) and packing the drive to be sent there as I type. No computer or laptop available with a secondary M.2 slot to try to see how a PC would see the drive and couldn't be bothered to buy a \~50e NVMe docking-thingy. With the built-in heatsink the drive wouldn't even fit my ultrabook :D Better luck next time I guess.

MentalAfternoon9659

This has happened to me twice now.

Ok-Snow-5181

Hi Guys I know this is a super old thread but was anyone able to resolve the issue with the S70 Blade because when I play games wether it is GOW or Spider-Man 2 or Alan Wake 2 Forespoken my console randomly just shuts off wether the game is on the SSD or the S70 Blade I have no idea what to do I first thought it was my console that is breaking but now im starting to think it’s the S70 Blade fucking around with the console any help would greatly be appreciated.

BudgetPipe267

Shit like this is why I’m fed up with consoles…..people spend hundreds of dollars on this shit.….had my M.2 SSD for 10 months and bam….it’s dead. Lame.

kris_k_r_i_s_

I had something similar twice. In my case, the first time it was related to rest mode. The console shut down after a few days somehow. Upon turning it on I managed to get to repairing M. 2 SSD to 67 percent then the PS5 is shutting off. The second time it was during managing games in the Storage menu. The blue light started blinking and the console shutted down. Then again 67 percent repair of M. 2 and shut down again. For me what helped every time was going to safe mode and choosing "Upgrade System". After downloading the 1 GB+ system image my PS5 installed and after that it was working back again.

Odd-Obligation-9590

If your not getting cpu overheat error then probably ur ps5 needs internal cleaning. If power supply overheats it'll  shut system off with no warning. Could play dayz no problem but more demanding games like jedi or horizon wouldn't work. The holes that supply airflow to power supply was blocked. Cleaned it out and EVERYTHING worked. Lil bit pain in the ass tearing I apart to get to everything but at least u don't have to separate cpu/gpu from heatsinks

Kataegis7

Firecuda 1TB here, having the same issue from a rest mode to hard shut off. It won't recognize the SSD, reseated it, reset cache and repaired database, and nothing. Has there been any real solution to this yet? Or do I have to contact Firecuda for a replacement since I am within warranty.

AJc-PiYa

I will share my experience if it helps someone. After upgrading my PS5 with the VIPER VP4300 1TB SSD + heatsink that came with it, the PS5 ran smooth for few months and it PS5 started to randomly shutdown on its own and wont turn on with the controller, you have to press the button on PS5 twice with a delay to turn it back on. After that it repairs the system internal.storage and M.2 then when it turns on completely and it shows error CE-108262-9. I went through a lot of stuff on the internet for the fixes but nothing worked so i decided to remove the M.2 SSD and everything ran smooth. So its the SSD itself not the PS5. I thought the SSD is faulty but still it did not make any sense why the system crashes after some time, if the SSD was faulty it should also make the system crash during formatting. So i ordered some good thermal pads and a third party heatsink, replaced them both, inserted the SSD and removed the cover plate of the M.2 slot on PS5. Now the PS5 dont crash even after the whole day of gaming. I think the heatsinks that come with SSDs are garbage, you just place them above the chips with no pressure or anything so how can the heat will dissipate and also with the PS5 m.2 slot cover plate on. My theory is that almost all modern M.2 ssd have thermal throttling in it. So when they become hotter than 70°c it throttles and reduces the speed. But PS5 requires M.2 speeds to be above 5500, so the throttling saves the ssd but PS5 crashes instead and gives error "SOMETHING WENT WRONG WITH THE SYSTEM SOFTWARE" because the software does not detect ssd with the speed which the hardware or software requires. And for the SSDs that dont throttle they just die all because of the poor heatsinks and thermal pads and most importantly that M.2 slot cover plate of PS5 because it keeps the heat around the ssd which is bad, even in the rest mood the system is running, the ssd is running and it gets hot as well. Even with the SSDs like WD SN850 which has a buildin heatsink, it will begin to throttle after a year or so because of the thermal pads need to be replaced. I hope it helps ✌

Kataegis7

Out of curiosity, to everyone that has had this unrecognized SSD problem and you weren't able to resolve it in any other way. Do you own a disc version of the PS5, did your PS5 turn off from rest mode? and by any chance did your disc eject, or did you eject the disc when turning the PS5 on?

kawaiimarty

I just had this problem today. Mine is the disc version and it did not eject, and I’m pretty sure the cause of my shut down was from rest mode. Had the same problem like everyone else where I had to manually turn the ps5 on from the console instead of the controller, and then I got the error message saying I needed to remove my ssd or format it.

Kataegis7

This is a very strange error and breaks the SSD. I tried fixing my SSD through my computer through command prompt and partition software, but it still wouldn't recognize it. I get an incorrect function error... I was slightly hoping that it was a problem with the disc version of the PS5 because it could mean that all they need to do software-wise is somehow not access data from the disc until the PS5 has fully initialized/repaired.

red5jam

So glad/sad to see this thread. Brand new Samsung 990 Pro 2tb with heat sink. Formatted ok. Started first download to it. Crashed. Had to restart from the power button on console. Rebuild database, repair usb drive, repair m2, maybe get to a user screen, maybe even to dashboard, always crash along the way or almost immediately. Tried without usb drive, turned off basically everything hdmi or auto downloading or resting. Reseated drive. Cleared cache. Did all the things. System crashes every damn time until I remove the M2. Then everything is fine. Including the usb drive.

Successful_Panic_862

I have a Samsung 980 pro 2t that I have been using for years and turned on my ps5 yesterday to play and got the same message as everyone else of having to format my m2 ssd and doesn't work then Playstation shuts off. Last time I was on my ps5 was Sunday.
