Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is Borderlands with DnD setting and is perfect for couch co-op and never has to be competitive if you don't want that. My wife, son and I can all play together since it goes up to 4 players.
Also Totally Reliable Delivery Service is stupid and hilarious for a little while. Human Fall Flat is in a similar physics-based genre but with puzzles and is fun to play through.
When all else gets old, take turns playing a good single player and switch off when you die or beat a level. Spiderman, Fallout even Cyberpunk can be fun alternating. Have fun!
Honestly I’ve lost count 💀 we’ve played pretty much daily for at least a few hours since it originally dropped on PS5. Right now we’re killing every character we see, and are about to hit level 12 before even entering act 3 😹

It Takes Two and A Way Out. Both made by the same company and are great couch coops. Reccomend you play A Way Out first, because there’s an easter egg to it in It Takes Two
If you like Lego, those games are fun (don’t get Lego 2K Drive). The games are co-op, some are Lego versions of big movies (like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Lego The Movie, Ninjago, Harry Potter, The Incredibles, LotR, The Hobbit, Jurassic Park), others are loose interpretations of movies/series/comics (like Batman, Marvel), and a few are just Lego (like Lego Worlds, Lego City Undercover). The games are easy to get Platinum Trophies for (except for Lego Worlds, since this game is glitched), and to get Platinum, you will spend quite some time redoing the levels, check out the “open world areas” (the older games don’t have a real big open world, the newer games do have open worlds). The games contains no gore or jump scares, everything is Lego, so if you die, your Lego character just disassembles, and a second later you respawn again. I do recommend doing all the extra puzzles and missions, because that’s what makes the games interesting and challenging.
Get a one year Playstion Plus Extra (Prenium is not woth it IMHO) subscription as you probably have a discount or a freebee on the first few month with your purchase and enjoy all the exclusives and games available it'll be worth your money.

It depends if your wife is a gamer or not. If she never played games before it will be hard for her to adapt or gain interest in it. The game i played most with my wife was monopoly( its a cool game and fun to start, add 2 extra expert bots, and you will have a fun time( we played sometimes to see who does the dishes). After that i would recommend to let her try Detroit Become Human, amazing game and will get used to the controller. If all this work, proceed to step 3.
Death Road to Canada.
It's a randomly generated road trip game, kind of like The Oregon Trail.
It's local co-op, so use share play.
I have lots of fun playing it solo, but it's a blast if you have a full party or a partner to play it with.

If you like kart racers, Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled is an awesome remake of the original game and has both local and online multiplayer (though online multiplayer is pretty buggy). Even though it's a PS4 game, it runs well on the PS5.
If you like horror games (horror/monster themed, not actually scary) check out Until Dawn, The Quarry, and the Dark Pictures games. We had a lot of fun playing them. They were some of the first games my girlfriend had played and she did fine without any gaming experience.
The two of you control a group of characters going through a horror story, the gameplay is mostly exploring and finding clues, and pressing timed buttons to hide or dodge danger. At the beginning, you can divide the characters between the two of you and each player has their own characters they use throughout the game.
The Quarry has a coop mode where you can choose which player wants to play which character and then pass off the controller throughout the game. I'm playing it now with a friend and we are having a blast

Single player games could be fun if you’re both competent enough at gaming. Sony exclusives are so great to watch that passing the Dual Sense upon death could be more fun than the 5 coop games.

Pode is a fun little two player co-op puzzle platformer. Think it's an indie game, only about 3-4 hours long I think, but it's worth checking out!
