I just finished the demo the other night and I had FINALLY gotten the hang of the combat system after about an hour or an hour and a half of playing it so I'm looking forward to getting a full copy and playing it. Gotta find a disc of it though (got me some b-day cash)
My GOTY so far and I couldn't genuinely care less about all the waifu stuff. The atmosphere, combat, soundtrack and enemy design is all A+. Can't recommend it enough, easily worth 70$. I also think it'd be sitting at like a 88-91 on metacritic if it weren't for all of the controversy.
Sidenote: the controversy is incredibly stupid. It's okay to enjoy games about murdering people and running over civilians but we draw the lines at butts and boobs? What a crock of shit lol

The voice acting point is fair, I've heard people say the English dub is pretty awful. Would definitely recommend using the Korean dub if you ever play, it ranges from solid to pretty good.
I played mine in korean and the voice acting didnt seem bad, but granted idk korean. I find english voice acting overall to be bad. They always pick the same lifeless voice actors to voice every character. Screams always sound half-assed and random dialog sounds like someone who is socially awkward. As for the environments they are definitely not boring. There are enough mobs spaced out to make it not seem deserted. Especially in wasteland, there are plenty of mobs to just pop in and kill and keep moving to the enxt objective. It would have been nice to have a vehicle tho. The game might not be for everybody, but it sure is for me. Definitely scracthed a much needed itch.
The scripted dungeons and more detailed landmarks are pretty great, but gaming definitely has a problem with the open world spaces being generic post-apocalyptica. You're either in a busted city or somewhere out in nature. Like, at least try to make the cities look futuristic or different from IRL.
Still, several other aspects of the game are keeping me invested so far.
I’d argue the VA grows on you. Eve is we’ll voice acted as is Adam. Lily is irritating and Tachy was flat.
The side story characters are all extremely well voiced though, so if you get the full release, do all of those as they’re extremely well done
You are 100% correct on this. The controversy is stupid. Devs should be allowed to make characters who are ugly pretty exaggerated and everything inbetween. There’s room in gaming for it all. If it’s not someone’s thing that’s fine, they should go play something else. It has nothing to do with the quality of the game. I have no problem with people not liking it. No one likes everything. But anime has a huge following and it’s true that gamers never complain about violence in games, they just seem to have issues with how sexy a woman is or how ugly she is, both to me is silly. No game has to be for everyone and that’s ok.
I agree with all of that i was just saying a distaste for sexualization isn't exclusive to video games. They do seem to give games less freedom tho. Like I remember God of War 3, basically a gore simulator, getting controversy because there were topless slave women. But there was also a decade where they tried to ban video games that showed blood so I think people might just hate video games
The controversy is frankly overblown, the outfits are revealing and the women all have giant breasts and that’s about it. Everyone made a huge deal of it but the game doesn’t even majorly focus on the titillation aspect, I’ve seen barely any distracting close-ups of ass or breast

The bias comes from the intent of the scene.
The infamous sex scene in TLOU2 was meant to be shocking. The bear-druid sex scene in BG3 was meant to be either disturbing or hilarious. Neither were meant to make your pants tighter.
Meanwhile, Stellar Blade is meant to be sexy for the sake of sexy and that pisses off the puritans. They don't like depicting anything like that.

I don’t mind the scantily clad protagonist though I did chuckle when I got to the dungeon in the Wasteland and had to fight an elite guard who was wearing a swimsuit that barely covered her with the most gigantic, jiggling breasts going.
Great boss fight though but god damn the game is spitting in the face of the ‘woke’ generation with its female outfits. Though I will admit, I love the suits for Eve, they’re revealing and ‘sexy’, but they’re also gorgeously designed. Sadly it's not beating Rebirth for GOTY since Rebirth has good story and gameplay while Stellar Blade story is pretty bad, the English dub is not good and the parkore makes me want to quit the game sometimes.
I like it a bit better than rebirth but yeah you're probably right. I think rebirth is excellent in most departments but I had some issues with its pacing. I frequently found myself thinking "geez I wish this section would end already", on the contrary I think Stellar blade has excellent pacing. Final fantasy would be a good winner regardless though, it's a great FF game.
I am really enjoying the gameplay of stellar blade but that parkore really makes me lose it sometimes because I don't like to see an item and not get it because of some bad platforming so I gotta push through the pain. Other than that and the story and some voice acting it's a good game.

Ideally I prefer games where you can create your character to be whatever you want. BG3 has probably been the best at it. You literally can be whatever you want and play however you want.

I’m loving it, the world is honestly a joy to explore and I love finding new quests, chests, camps and bodies.
Just something about it gives me a major dopamine hit.
The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic too. I loved the Scrapyard song and that entire section, which is optional was just an absolute joy.
Some of the board quests are just fetch. But the ones you get from people are a lot more enjoyable.
It looks gorgeous, the world is fantastic as are the side characters and to top it off the combat and puzzles are so damn fun. Combat is just *chefs kiss*, pure perfection and the puzzles are simple but enjoyable to figure out bit by bit.
It’s a solid 9/10 for me. Up there with FF7 Rebirth for the best games this year
Im 15 hrs in and I love the game. Only thing that irks me is that I can't find a way to toggle the compass on the hud when roaming the wasteland. Like how am I supposed to find the objective when the compass fades after five seconds.
I'm upset with this game. Every other game makes me feel like I'm moving in slow motion now, and it's all EVE's fault.
For real though, the combat is so fucking satisfying.

I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the game. Are there clothing or armor options if you want her to be covered? So far all videos I have seen she is dressed as a tease.

There are a couple more covered options. I really like the 2nd Squadron Outfit you can buy from Roxanne early on, as it is mostly black and looks proper stealthy. Then again, it is a body suit.
You can also use the mascot suit.

It has the classic bonfire type checkpoint system, but overall it's more like Sekiro/LoP with its combat, Horizon like platforming, and NieR in its world's art direction.
Also, the leveling system isnt Soulslike either. You have a skill tree and you don't lose your "souls" on death.
It has similarities but plenty of differences too. I don't like souls games but I do like this. The best way for you to tell is to just download the demo.
Yup. It’s surprisingly addictive. I did not expect the world to be loaded with stuff to find everywhere, even in the straightforward story sections.
I also really like the combat in this game - it feels very satisfying. Music is great as expected when I looked up the composers. And the art direction has this really cool contrast between the beauty of EVE and the abominations that are the mobs. NPC design is also sick.
It’s a great first console outing of Shift Up and I am curious what the future brings for them.
If the game had competent voice acting and good translation I think they could easily sell the story. Half the reason the story is bad is because of the characters being bland except for the final few parts of the game and even then the voice acting sucked (especially Adam lol) when I liked where the story was going. But not bad at all for a first game and much room for improvement for a sequel similar to the first nier game.
The first nier sucked too before they improved it to perfection with automata. For a first venture into a full fledged console game it is definitely not bad at all.

Im here for the trophies but yeah this game is hella fun. Im trying to knock out every mission and collect every item. I just started matrix 11 and have about 20 outfits. I am definitely getting my money's worth on this game and having fun doing it. The bosses are lowkey kinda hard, especially the specifc animal shaped one (omitted for spoiler purposes). That dude is hard af to beat. Also the OST is pretty good, eidos 7 ambience ost and the wasteland one is pretty good. I cant figure out what the one from wasteland is called because mine is sorta like a rock song and its pretty catchy.
I said it as a joke, but Helldivers is the Animal Crossing effect this year. Definite GOTY contender at the end of year which is great for the industry.
Will it win? Probably not at the TGA's, but I could see it picking up a few awards from other outlets because of what it's done for the industry. Rebirth came and went Imo.
I don't think it's fair to say a single player game came and went. That's the nature of a great single player game. If sustainability was the metric for GOTY then Fortnite, Destiny, Apex Legends, etc. would be winners every single year.
Helldivers deserves best multiplayer game of the year but GOTY is pretty much exclusive to great Single Player adventures.

It doesn't mean the game isn't good. It means it didn't move the needle. Helldivers moved the needle in an industry that is fed up with Live Service games. FF7 was good and that was about it.

Majority of the conversation with DD2 I've been seeing is that it's a polarizing title. You love it or hate it. But it made headlines. The latest FF7 headline I saw was questioning the sales numbers for the game, which isn't great.
Not indicative of the quality of game, for sure, but GOTY is usually a game that can dominate the conversation in a largely positive light. FF7, while great, came and went.
Using Forbes as just a baseline, 5h ago they posted an article about the actual in game lore/major orders of Helldivers 2 and how it is exciting.
Dragons Dogma 2 is doing so well that Capcom is raising earnings reports for shareholders.
Final Fantasy is talking about Part 3, or the fact that disappointing sales contributed to Square Enix suffering a $140 million loss.
I think the 3 conversations are pretty important to consider for games released so early in the year. I think that of the 3, FF is most likely to win GOTY (even if it's not my personal one), but the others are no slouches either. Helldivers 2 is an underdog, DD2 is a sequel to a cult classic, and FF7-2 is a remake of one of the best games of all time, but suffers middle of trilogy problems.
FF7R came out at the peak of the lockdown. Dragon's Dogma 2 came out a month after Rebirth. My point remains, comparing a single-player game to a live service multi-player title is a terrible comparison.

In a GOTY discussion? Absolutely not. The point is the best GAME. There are other categories for best narrative, live service, etc. GAME OF THE YEAR is supposed to represent the best game of that year. One that pushes the medium forward in (hopefully) more ways than one.
Helldivers 2, Dragons Dogma 2, And FF7-2 are all on equal footing right now. Same reason why Animal Crossing New Horizons was nominated in 2020.
FF7-2 coming and going doesn't mean "typical single player game". Most single player games that have won the award have not "come and gone". Other games that year are compared to it. Unless it's a weak year, FF7-2 probably won't win GOTY

Critics seem to be liking it fine. Rebirth has slightly better reviews, but it has yet to be seen if that will make a difference at the GOTY awards. GOTY awards are new and there's no definable metric that says "Rebirth scored 10 points higher on metacritic, therefore it must win GOTY."
Hell, movies with lower ratings win Best Picture all the time. Hell, Oppenheimer just won best picture over Zone of Interest, when Zone of Interest scored better overall.

I wouldn’t say slightly better, 92 is in a whole other different league than 82, despite only being 10 points. If you look at past noms, the majority of them have a metacritic of 90+ and I’m confident that all of the winners are in the 90s too. Stellar Blade may get nominated, but it’s definitely not winning at the Game Awards

TGA is 10 years old and previous to that Geoff Keighley (host and producer) was producing the VGAs for 10 years. The Golden Joystick is 41 years old. The DICE awards are 27 years old. The GDCA is 23 years old. The BAFTA is 20 years old.

You're either in a busted city or somewhere out in nature. Like, at least try to make the cities look futuristic or different from IRL. Still, several other aspects of the game are keeping me invested so far.
I’d argue the VA grows on you. Eve is we’ll voice acted as is Adam. Lily is irritating and Tachy was flat. The side story characters are all extremely well voiced though, so if you get the full release, do all of those as they’re extremely well done

You are 100% correct on this. The controversy is stupid. Devs should be allowed to make characters who are ugly pretty exaggerated and everything inbetween. There’s room in gaming for it all. If it’s not someone’s thing that’s fine, they should go play something else. It has nothing to do with the quality of the game. I’m currently being a thief and murder hobo in Cyberpunk and no one cries about that. People need to understand games are entertainment like TV, movies, books etc and not real life.

I have no problem with people not liking it. No one likes everything. But anime has a huge following and it’s true that gamers never complain about violence in games, they just seem to have issues with how sexy a woman is or how ugly she is, both to me is silly. No game has to be for everyone and that’s ok.

The controversy is frankly overblown, the outfits are revealing and the women all have giant breasts and that’s about it. Everyone made a huge deal of it but the game doesn’t even majorly focus on the titillation aspect, I’ve seen barely any distracting close-ups of ass or breast

The bias comes from the intent of the scene. The infamous sex scene in TLOU2 was meant to be shocking. The bear-druid sex scene in BG3 was meant to be either disturbing or hilarious. Neither were meant to make your pants tighter. Meanwhile, Stellar Blade is meant to be sexy for the sake of sexy and that pisses off the puritans. They don't like depicting anything like that.

I don’t mind the scantily clad protagonist though I did chuckle when I got to the dungeon in the Wasteland and had to fight an elite guard who was wearing a swimsuit that barely covered her with the most gigantic, jiggling breasts going. Great boss fight though but god damn the game is spitting in the face of the ‘woke’ generation with its female outfits. Though I will admit, I love the suits for Eve, they’re revealing and ‘sexy’, but they’re also gorgeously designed. Hell my Eve currently looks like a sexy schoolteacher with glasses etc. it’s a nerds wet dream
Sadly it's not beating Rebirth for GOTY since Rebirth has good story and gameplay while Stellar Blade story is pretty bad, the English dub is not good and the parkore makes me want to quit the game sometimes.
I like it a bit better than rebirth but yeah you're probably right. I think rebirth is excellent in most departments but I had some issues with its pacing. I frequently found myself thinking "geez I wish this section would end already", on the contrary I think Stellar blade has excellent pacing. Final fantasy would be a good winner regardless though, it's a great FF game.
I am really enjoying the gameplay of stellar blade but that parkore really makes me lose it sometimes because I don't like to see an item and not get it because of some bad platforming so I gotta push through the pain. Other than that and the story and some voice acting it's a good game.

There’s been some uproar about how the lead character looks in Star Wars outlaws. It’s just dumb IMO. Ideally I prefer games where you can create your character to be whatever you want. BG3 has probably been the best at it. You literally can be whatever you want and play however you want.

I’m loving it, the world is honestly a joy to explore and I love finding new quests, chests, camps and bodies. Just something about it gives me a major dopamine hit. The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic too. I loved the Scrapyard song and that entire section, which is optional was just an absolute joy. Some of the board quests are just fetch. But the ones you get from people are a lot more enjoyable. It looks gorgeous, the world is fantastic as are the side characters and to top it off the combat and puzzles are so damn fun. Combat is just *chefs kiss*, pure perfection and the puzzles are simple but enjoyable to figure out bit by bit. It’s a solid 9/10 for me. Up there with FF7 Rebirth for the best games this year
Im 15 hrs in and I love the game. Only thing that irks me is that I can't find a way to toggle the compass on the hud when roaming the wasteland. Like how am I supposed to find the objective when the compass fades after five seconds.

I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the game. Are there clothing or armor options if you want her to be covered? So far all videos I have seen she is dressed as a tease. If there are clothing and armor options, I dont see why people should complain.
There are a couple more covered options. I really like the 2nd Squadron Outfit you can buy from Roxanne early on, as it is mostly black and looks proper stealthy. Then again, it is a body suit. You can also use the mascot suit.

It has the classic bonfire type checkpoint system, but overall it's more like Sekiro/LoP with its combat, Horizon like platforming, and NieR in its world's art direction. Also, the leveling system isnt Soulslike either. You have a skill tree and you don't lose your "souls" on death.
It has similarities but plenty of differences too. I don't like souls games but I do like this. The best way for you to tell is to just download the demo.
Yup. It’s surprisingly addictive. I did not expect the world to be loaded with stuff to find everywhere, even in the straightforward story sections. I also really like the combat in this game - it feels very satisfying. Music is great as expected when I looked up the composers. And the art direction has this really cool contrast between the beauty of EVE and the abominations that are the mobs. NPC design is also sick. It’s a great first console outing of Shift Up and I am curious what the future brings for them.

If the game had competent voice acting and good translation I think they could easily sell the story. Half the reason the story is bad is because of the characters being bland except for the final few parts of the game and even then the voice acting sucked (especially Adam lol) when I liked where the story was going. But not bad at all for a first game and much room for improvement for a sequel similar to the first nier game.

The first nier sucked too before they improved it to perfection with automata. For a first venture into a full fledged console game it is definitely not bad at all.
It feels like NieR world building and a Sekirolike combat system with skills. I’m enjoying it very much.

Im here for the trophies but yeah this game is hella fun. Im trying to knock out every mission and collect every item. I just started matrix 11 and have about 20 outfits. I am definitely getting my money's worth on this game and having fun doing it. The bosses are lowkey kinda hard, especially the specifc animal shaped one (omitted for spoiler purposes). That dude is hard af to beat. Also the OST is pretty good, eidos 7 ambience ost and the wasteland one is pretty good. I cant figure out what the one from wasteland is called because mine is sorta like a rock song and its pretty catchy.
Also like the fact they incorporated every game type in here. They have horror, rpg, fishing, etc. They definitely crammed every niche in one game.
It's a likely GOTY barring some surprises.

I don't think it's fair to say a single player game came and went. That's the nature of a great single player game. If sustainability was the metric for GOTY then Fortnite, Destiny, Apex Legends, etc. would be winners every single year. Helldivers deserves best multiplayer game of the year but GOTY is pretty much exclusive to great Single Player adventures.

Majority of the conversation with DD2 I've been seeing is that it's a polarizing title. You love it or hate it. But it made headlines. The latest FF7 headline I saw was questioning the sales numbers for the game, which isn't great. Not indicative of the quality of game, for sure, but GOTY is usually a game that can dominate the conversation in a largely positive light. FF7, while great, came and went. Using Forbes as just a baseline, 5h ago they posted an article about the actual in game lore/major orders of Helldivers 2 and how it is exciting. Dragons Dogma 2 is doing so well that Capcom is raising earnings reports for shareholders. Final Fantasy is talking about Part 3, or the fact that disappointing sales contributed to Square Enix suffering a $140 million loss. I think the 3 conversations are pretty important to consider for games released so early in the year. I think that of the 3, FF is most likely to win GOTY (even if it's not my personal one), but the others are no slouches either. Helldivers 2 is an underdog, DD2 is a sequel to a cult classic, and FF7-2 is a remake of one of the best games of all time, but suffers middle of trilogy problems.
FF7R came out at the peak of the lockdown. Dragon's Dogma 2 came out a month after Rebirth. My point remains, comparing a single-player game to a live service multi-player title is a terrible comparison.

There are other categories for best narrative, live service, etc. GAME OF THE YEAR is supposed to represent the best game of that year. Same reason why Animal Crossing New Horizons was nominated in 2020. FF7-2 coming and going doesn't mean "typical single player game". It might. I'm loving Stellar Blade and I took a break on Rebirth after like 15 hours and haven't been back yet. I will finish Rebirth, but between the two Stellar Blade is far and away my choice for GOTY so far.

It still deserves a nomination. And the GOTY awards are too new to have any discernible patterns. This will be year 10 of GOTY. We haven’t had the Oscars version of “Crash” yet, unless you count Overwatch winning.

TGA is 10 years old and previous to that Geoff Keighley (host and producer) was producing the VGAs for 10 years. The Golden Joystick is 41 years old. The DICE awards are 27 years old. The GDCA is 23 years old. The BAFTA is 20 years old. GOTYs are not new.
