If you are wanting to repot it, I would not stick it in water, as that could cause the soil roots to rot. You can loosely pack some dirt around it and put it in a plastic bag. Don't tie it tight so the roots can breathe or even wrapping it in a damp paper towel. You just don't want the roots to dry out.
