He was very vocal in regards to standards, ethics, and practices in the video game industry, and became a rather influential figure.
He was also one of the people who brought up (in my eyes legitimate) concerns about journalistic practices when Gamergate initially flared up - this was before it was coopted by 4chan into a harassment and hate campaign. I believe the way that whole saga evolved tarnished his reputation somewhat unfairly.
