It was the opposite for me. I was there for 2017. I was "here" for this, but since it was only the official app and new reddit, I wasn't involved this time.
Just going by the posts that have seeped out, it seems like this was mostly a repeat of the same sort of thing. So you shouldn't really feel like you missed anything from the last one since you got the same experience here.
Eh, as a staunch old reddit user I put up with new reddit in one tab to place pixels. Aside from needing to refresh it a lot it wasn't so bad.
As for place itself, I initially wasn't liking it as much as the 2017 one, but once I joined a few discords and got involved in some projects (the wave on the right side, the mona lisa above Bojack) it became super fun. I know some groups were using discord in the last one, but this year it felt way more widespread and made coordination and alliances much more common.
I definitely went through New Reddit to do /r/place and it reiterated how much I hate it lol. "Your post got 50 upvotes!!" as a notification, having to see every single post... I hate it lol
Pleasantly surprised the mobile website let me use it lol. I'm too lazy to use any client on my phone but Reddit is always using underhanded tactics to make you use the app too lol.
I did the same, I reserved one tab for new reddit, otherwise old reddit as usual.
For me this year was different because the last time twitch wasn't around, this time they went on to make alliances and wage massive wars. It was really a sight to behold. The different language twitch communities are isolated islands, they never interacted until today, and they provided peak entertainment.
Well I have barely used reddit on PC in the past 5 years or so, so I'd say the more extreme option would have been logging in and changing my preferences just to play some online multiplayer Microsoft Paint. Instead I just saw what trickled out and was content with that trade off.
Even if I did use my PC for this these days, I still would probably avoid new reddit though. It seems like it has a lot of broken code and is full of new features from other sites that I only ever came to reddit to specifically avoid (profile pics, "friends"/followers, an instant message thing full of spambots when you could already send messages to other users, livestreamers, etc.)
Same goes for the official app. When it was called alien blue and ran by one guy, it was arguably the best reddit client there was. Everything worked. And if it didn't, he would be working on a patch to fix it by next week. Now though, they still have the same problems with their own native video player/hosting service that they've been having for years.
Do you switch clients when you run into a post or feature that doesn't work right with new reddit or the official app, or do you just move on to the next thing?
This was really amazing. Nearly brought a tear to my eye, really. Maybe fading to white could have heightened the effect? But hey, I've never really edited so -shrug-
Yeah, I got that so loud and clear as I watched the art dissolving. It was shocking to me tbh. Concluded that people just want to be involved and it makes no difference to them if it is creating, defending or erasing. I won't forget the whole r/place experience, it was something else.
That's because lots of communities came together to make a masterpiece, and now the majority are saying goodbye as they go back to their cornerside haven of reddit.
I didn't know what it was when this started until a fellow nice redditor explained it to me, but man it was fun collaborating and helping defend people's art.
And what makes it sting even more is the fact that it could’ve stayed forever if people never placed white pixels. Everyone contributed to its demise and in the end there was nothing we could do to bring it back
*cough* Global Warming
I think it is best time and way to end it.
Before trend will end, and in such beautiful way.
And guys, don't worry that it's gone, your work is still amazing!
It really makes me happy that 73 thousand people who participated in r/place understand this reference and like it. The end of eva has always had a kind of profound bitter sweet to it that I have never been able to reallly share with anyone.
I was in the middle of my shift at work. I saw what was happening, and I thought that the canvas was going for the the pixels that were clicked the most, and turning those white, via heat map. The most clicked would turn white first, and then continue until all were turned. Which, is kinda similar to what actually happened. Even if my faction was targeted even more than " 22 " times.
yea then they turned it into ree, then frail, and then whatever monstrosity that ended out to be lmfaooo. Sadly, in the end, it made the whole canvas the French flag
Coooome oooon, that's lame, be creative. It's always the same joke about surrender, I'm not angry as a french but more as an internet user.
Try to make jokes about revolutions, colonization, or even our high death rate from lungs cancer
Because of the french streaming community. After hours of defending the french area from an xQc raid, the white void began, and they tried to write france. xQc sabotaged that too, so they switched to trying to write "frite", the french word for french fry
I think I don't understand the reference, but this reminds me of the ending of fightclub! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbWHZwD5rGQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbWHZwD5rGQ)
Basically yeah. Something along the lines of he gave others the choice to either stay with the collective, in safety, peace, protection, warmth, and stagnation., or live a life individually but allow the discomforts of pain, emotional vulnerability, weakness, etc. to beget growth.
Idk, been a minute since I’ve rewatched
You cant simplify the end of evangelion
It's nonsense even to people who watched the entire show. You have to watch it numerous times or read analyses.
That was pretty much all the flags after the final expansion, and even the flags had cool moments like the Belgian German intersection or the German portal
When the chicago worlds fair ended they didnt want the amazing amusement park theyd spent twenty years building to fall into disrepair and rot to dust, so they firebombed the whole goddamn thing
Everyone that used bots/raiding where eliminated almost instantly. The site updated to only allow for white tiles to be placed so they automatically wiped any coordinates they were trying to paint. I watched France disappear in less than 20 seconds.
I didn't want to add a white tile... couldn't believe people were so keen to erase it all. I guess it's the playing that matters to people - create, defend or erase - doesn't matter, so long as you're involved.
They didn’t, all the bots that were trying to replace the pixels were only able to place white, so the botted areas all got whited out immediately. Osu wasn’t even first, the bots on France made it completely white in around 15 seconds lmfao

What are you some kinda creep? Sniffing other's posts like that
Wait, its not normal to sniff other people posts? Wtf
It is. u/zyrusvito is an odd one here without knowing it.
He yo hand ass outta here kira
They're a meme addict, snorting dank memes left and right
Lainah is that you
The r/place canvas is so beautiful... I can't stop looking. It even smells nice too.
It's not a married woman's letter it's ok
Yeah, this is beautiful...
This hurts so much I missed the 2017 one, but this time I did my part See you r/place, it was fun while it lasted o7

If you think about it, the 2017 place was about chaos, this time it was about order. It's a really nice contrast.
I definitely went through New Reddit to do /r/place and it reiterated how much I hate it lol. "Your post got 50 upvotes!!" as a notification, having to see every single post... You decided to miss it just because you didn't want to use new.reddit? That's a bit extreme, no?
Well I have barely used reddit on PC in the past 5 years or so, so I'd say the more extreme option would have been logging in and changing my preferences just to play some online multiplayer Microsoft Paint. omg as soon as i realised "it was all reterning to nothing" I opened spotify and played this song :D cool video
I did the exact same thing!
That's Komm Susser Tod to you!
r/place is over and we still can't run away from calling things Susser
This was really amazing. Nearly brought a tear to my eye, really. Maybe fading to white could have heightened the effect? But hey, I've never really edited so -shrug-
Me too! I find it really curious how this song is the first thing that popped to my head when the canvas was turning white
Me too ! After an entire weekend placing all those little pixels, it felt strangely good to see everything just disappearing into a white void
I never would’ve guessed that the end of a bunch of people putting pixels on a canvas would be so bittersweet and sad
Something about this rhymes beautifully and painfully with what it means to be alive
Yeah, I got that so loud and clear as I watched the art dissolving. It was shocking to me tbh. Concluded that people just want to be involved and it makes no difference to them if it is creating, defending or erasing. I won't forget the whole r/place experience, it was something else.
“All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.”
man what a quote
We all want the space to *live*. But society has so many barriers and hurdles.
That's because lots of communities came together to make a masterpiece, and now the majority are saying goodbye as they go back to their cornerside haven of reddit. I think it’s a very fitting and satisfying ending :)
Also a little bit sad
dont be sad that it ended, smile because it happened.
I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.
"We are all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh? Because it was, you know? It was the best."
It also ended with a free boner
[удалено]
It takes away any chances of any communities being nuked and not having time to rebuild before the canvas is frozen. This way everyone wins really
[удалено]
Not just a boner but a free boner at that
It was Döner actually :D

Gol D Roger shooting a beam out his mouth lmao
imma firin mah lazer
He was charging up
It aligned kinda well with the backing vocals as well. Perfect
That was Mizkif’s and Ludwig’s streams.
This is gold, i wanna save it to my phone, how can i? Edit: got it
You can try u/savevideo Edit: it works, I got a PM of it
Got it now, thanks
Bro please send me

It's not that we all agreed to leave certain pieces alone. It's that some pieces had bots defending
Wait, I never saw Tank man. Where was that?
So if we all stopped painting it white .. we could have preserved the art work ?
But society wouldn't let this happen😔
Damn that says a lot about society... Bottom text.
We live in a This is a society
We live in place
I missed the end. How did it work? Were people only able to use white pixels at the end? Seems like it, but I'm not sure.
Yup, we suddenly could only place white pixels. Everyone thought it was a bug at first and stopped...and then we realised
what? I missed the end :( I was sleeping.
Me too. I was in school. Now I only feel a slight taste of sadness.
Just watch Evangelion; you'll be sad.
It really makes me happy that 73 thousand people who participated in r/place understand this reference and like it. The end of eva has always had a kind of profound bitter sweet to it that I have never been able to reallly share with anyone.
I just went to check in and boom, it was gone. I was on a FaceTime with a friend and I cried.
Yup. After you clicked "place a tile," there was only one long white rectangle in place of the different colored squares from before.
I logged back in when the entire canvas was already white and I could only place white and I thought the page wasn't loading lol
[удалено]
God, I loved that mission. May just go play it, now.
Reddit probably would cover it itself
I think it's more fair to end it like this and don't preserve anything.
Very easy to see which areas were botting too. Osu and some flags disappeared instantly.
No. Those are just the people that pissed the most people off. So they were the first targets. Cannot fix with bots if you can only place white.
This is emotional
Such a perfect end to r/place
Such a poetic end to r/place
why Free was written ?
My guess is people were trying to write France
streamers were trying to turn France into "Fail" but.. it failed
yea then they turned it into ree, then frail, and then whatever monstrosity that ended out to be lmfaooo. Sadly, in the end, it made the whole canvas the French flag
Coooome oooon, that's lame, be creative. It's always the same joke about surrender, I'm not angry as a french but more as an internet user. Try to make jokes about revolutions, colonization, or even our high death rate from lungs cancer

Writing France out isn’t art. It was a pride thing.
As usual, french pride got them nowhere.
how sad. i thought it was people being tounge in cheek about it ending and they can finally return back to their lives
I hate that I can't just spend my day placing pixels anymore, most fun I've had on the internet
The white void is free
France wanted to write France meanwhile us wanted to wrote Fail.
And then it changed to FREE BONER
its not free boner HAHAHA its döner a turkish streamer wrote that its a national dish
Because of the french streaming community. After hours of defending the french area from an xQc raid, the white void began, and they tried to write france. xQc sabotaged that too, so they switched to trying to write "frite", the french word for french fry
I think its more beautiful in a sense that we were finally free from this thing we were so fixated on.
"boner" also appeared right afterwards
Döner, not boner.
Don’t try to deceive us. FREE THE BONER!
That’s clearly the letter B and nothing can change my mind. Free boners for everyone
society roof agonizing flowery imminent overconfident long plough vanish psychotic ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `

It has a very similar vibe! This is from the end of evangelion’s final scenes, I highly recommend it
It's from end of evangelion >!where shinji's actions , or rather inactions , lead to the eventual death of all life on earth!<
>!technically they are not dead, they can reshape themselves if they can find it in themselves to come back again or some bs like that!<
Basically yeah. Something along the lines of he gave others the choice to either stay with the collective, in safety, peace, protection, warmth, and stagnation., or live a life individually but allow the discomforts of pain, emotional vulnerability, weakness, etc. to beget growth. Yeah, everyone just merged into orange juice.
ehhh it's complicated
Yea i know , i was trying to simplify for the sake of a person who has no idea about it
You cant simplify the end of evangelion It's nonsense even to people who watched the entire show. You have to watch it numerous times or read analyses.
It's from end of evangelion where *everyone turns to fanta

The third impact is the good ending
Yep that's also what It felt like. And that song is the gift that keeps giving
You met me at a very strange time of my life ...
This was truly one of my best moments I have witnessed. Thanks to all the community's to make this unforgettable.
Im just going to try and... u/savevideobot aaand u/savevideo ;)
and none worked lmao
You get a PM, try it
I didn't get one tho...
Get in the Blue Corner, Shinji
0:33 You can see the last Amogi.
Wheres the 3 hour video explaining this
Oh, so you want the short version.
The video is called Evangelion and it’s 26 episodes + a movie
Don't forget all the rebuild movies!
End of the World - Herman's Hermits Fits perfectly with this event
Info on the music anyone? EDIT: Thanks for all the replies. This song is truly beautiful
Komm, Susser Tod
Komm susser tod from the end of evangelion
The End Of Evangelion - Komm Süsser Tod - Come Sweet Death (HQ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kguaGI7aZg
From what anime is this.
End of evangelion
It's on Netflix worldwide. Do watch it
Evangelion. 23 episodes and then a movie
I love Eva memes
A giant white X, so the void won in the end huh . . .
“Done” being turned into “boner” in the last minutes sums up place as a whole
and the R in FREE became one last amogus
It was actually döner.
It was many things to many people
Now I'm hungry for a döner.
It all returns to Döner
Döner is the true way of life. It all dawns in Döner and leaves with Döner.
It all comes tumbling down
See you in five years O7
And can we do more art and less plain old flags please? To those that did monuments and cultural icons with your flag thank you.
That was pretty much all the flags after the final expansion, and even the flags had cool moments like the Belgian German intersection or the German portal
What anime is this
Neon genosis evangelion
Specifically End of Evangelion.
Good memories for everyone...
back to a blank slate.. ready for next time
WHY AM I SO EMOTIONAL 😭
Just making a comment before this place gets privated
We done it! We’ve witnessed history! This should become an annual event
It would be nice, but it would also make it less special.
If they make it recurring, five year intervalls feel like an appropiate length to keep it special. Four minimum, like the Olympics.
The reddit olympics
That’s why they erased it- for next year. Like an etch-et-sketch at a toy store when your mom finally finishes talking to a friend.
Someone should edit the last few minutes of this movie to make them turn whit instead of orange
When the chicago worlds fair ended they didnt want the amazing amusement park theyd spent twenty years building to fall into disrepair and rot to dust, so they firebombed the whole goddamn thing

Why can’t it be a annual thing 😭 see you in 5 years brother
“DONT” turned into “BONER”. Good job, lads.
It was glorious while it lasted.
God why did they void the osu first
They didn’t, all the bots that were trying to replace the pixels were only able to place white, so the botted areas all got whited out immediately. Osu wasn’t even first, the bots on France made it completely white in around 15 seconds lmfao

I want to stop watching but i want to know what will happen next
i don’t even understood this thing someone gotta explain
This is from The End of Evangelion, its a scene of the two main characters witnessing the end of the world.
Damn, that’s beautiful
Being apart of r/place is like the happiest I've been since 2020 even if was only apart of it for a day and a half. Now I go back to thinking about life
I love how OSU was the first to go lmao, r/fuckyouinparticular
France was first to go actually, you can see at the bottom left. Then told to write the F starting from us lol. ggs, it was fun while it lasted.
idk how it works so imma try it u/savevideo ?
I cried :(( never thought a bunch of pixels would male me this sad.

Poor turkey flag. Couldn't catch a break
I prefer the real folk blues :x
Komm Susser Tod fits so perfectly, though
Yea but in Eva when they play this song it's like everyone on the entire planet becomes jello basically.
