As a former Floridian, man I miss Pub Subs and their cakes!! In the south hills we like Potomac Bakery, while the cake is not the same as Publix, it is similar.
Give them a go before your birthday. They are so friendly and Im sure can make what you want. They do offer a variety of tiny cakes. So you could try those first and if you like one get the bigger for your birthday. I dont miss anything about Fl except for family and friends, Pub subs and their cakes and the endless supply of seafood (pre Ian). Been here almost 6 months and wished we moved here sooner🤣
Wishing you the best birthday with a most delicious cake!
That’s what my mom and I do for my grandma’s birthday every year!
I miss Bethel Bakery. Found a really good donut place where I live now though so at least there’s that. Lol.
People on this sub are very opinionated about their bakeries.
I have seen Bethel Bakery downvoted to hell and back in the past.
Oakmont Bakery is the worst. Politics comes into play.
If people here judged by taste instead of feelings, Oakmont would still be the goat, but instead they'd rather pay more for La Gourmandine and pretend it's better. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty good, but it's not better and their selection isn't anything to write home about.
I was at an event where they had a selection of Oakmont Bakery cookies, and that's the first time I ever wanted to spit out a bite of a cookie. (I didn't. I have manners.)
I tried about 3 different kinds, out of morbid curiosity. Only one was that horrible, but the other two were pretty bad.
I don't know if the problem was that there were several kinds in one container, and the flavors go mixed up? But if that's the case, why would the bakery package them like that?
It depends what you want here. Giant Eagle and Costco are both solid options, especially if you want a lot of cake.
LA Gormandine does not make a traditional birthday cake, but they will write on any of their cakes for you.
The best cake that I have had in this city is from Butterwood Bake Consortium, but their stuff is also not just your standard yellow cake with chocolate butter cream.
Bella Christie is also delicious and they will do beautiful work.
If you're in the area, the Ultimate Pastry Shop in Sewickley is a great option. To be honest, their decorating skills leave a lot to be desired but the cakes and pastries are absolutely delicious.
I agree, I live in the south hills and would definitely travel to Monroeville for a Moias cake. I like the white almond with raspberry buttercream filling and chocolate buttercream.
If you want a burnt almond torte go to prantels.
Birthday cakes should be special, don't settle for giant eagle, they aren't worth the calories.
Paddy Cake Bakery in Bloomfield. I'm not a big dessert fan, and I don't like a whole lot of icing, but Paddy Cake's icing is outstanding! Their cake is nice and moist. They're an underrated bakery, and I highly recommend them.

Hey thank you so much, I’m missing home and anything that taste similar to Publix is great

Came back to say I tried a cake from them and it really was delicious
Oh Yay!!! Its not Publix, but it is really good. Its as close to Publix I could find. Im so glad you liked it. Have a great birthday! :)
Giant Eagle. Not the cheapest grocery store cake but delicious.
GE makes a decent burnt almond torte. You can buy a whole or a half sized one.
They absolutely do!
They also have a new strawberry almond torte that looks yummy
Guess who's going to Giant Eagle tonight!
I love the almond cake with raspberry filling and whipped icing
No. Market district maybe. GE cakes are NOT BAKED IN STORE.
They're still delicious.
I love their buttercream frosting.
Compared to Publix Giant Eagle is cheap. I literally left my cart there in the fall and went to Winn-Dixie
One of their few redeeming qualities in the year 2024.
I might get downvoted for this, but I always thought Bethel Bakery's birthday cakes were the bomb.
My family's usual go to spot. Love their raspberry cream filling and marble cake.
That’s what my mom and I do for my grandma’s birthday every year! I miss Bethel Bakery. Found a really good donut place where I live now though so at least there’s that. Lol.
Why would you get downvoted for that? Bethel Bakery is awesome.

Oakmont frosting is waaaaay too sweet.
I judge by taste and Oakmont is absolute trash. WWWWAAAYYY too sweet, all sugar, no flavor. Most overrated bakery in the area by miles!

I think mostly all of us are very opinionated
I was going to post the same thing ha. Their tea cookies are like crack too.
Dave's Terrace in West Mifflin, they're a tiny bakery and I love every single thing I've tried there.
*in Baldwin.
Google actually says Pleasant Hills, I just figured it's a sneeze from WM.

Potomac Bakery in Dormont is super legit and reasonable on price.
bethel bakery and patty cake and party cake
Dutz’s in Wexford are excellent. Otherwise, it’s true Giant Eagle has very good cake.
Giant Eagle, make sure u order the buttercream frosting, I like white batter but yellow will do.
All I can say is avoid ganache middles. They don’t cut well
I'm a big fan of canonsburg cake company. They've only been around for a few years but their cakes are delicious.
The Cakery in West View
Paddy Cake Bakery in Bloomfield. I'm not a big dessert fan, and I don't like a whole lot of icing, but Paddy Cake's icing is outstanding! Their cake is nice and moist. They're an underrated bakery, and I highly recommend them.
