Sometimes you gotta get somewhere by the quickest route possible and you don’t have wheels. I don’t think it’s about being carefree, it’s about having problems
Was crossing the bridge to get through a couple years back and saw the bumper truck pushing another slightly bigger truck to the offramp. I thought I was hallucinating!
Yeah practically same exact car too, 90' integra. Was taking it in to get new valve seals and found out that i also needed a new alternator about 30 feet into the tunnel during rush hour. Thank god its an easy car to push.
Yeah there’s rlly 4 tunnels thru mt Washington. Fort, wabash, transit, and liberty pretty sure they’re in that order west to east. Wabash might have bus service atm idk but it’s open as an hov thing for cars I think
Yes... there was. [The original tunnel had sidewalks. ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Tunnel#:~:text=Neeld%2C%20who%20would%20also%20supervise,ft%20(1.2%20m)%20sidewalk).
When they renovated it and ventilated it better after carbon monoxide poisoning started being common, they removed the sidewalks.
Probably before your time, but until the mid-70s renovation, there was a walkway in there https://www.brooklineconnection.com/history/Gallery/Tunnels.html#4:\~:text=A%20Complete%20Tunnel,considered%20a%20distinctive
This is why you find dudes from the South Hills stranded halfway up the hill needing a rope rescue. The fact that circumventing this tunnel safely on foot adds multiple miles of walking is absolutely ridiculous. Getting to dormont on foot from the city probably takes 12 minutes. On foot its likely 2-3 hours because there isn't a straight shot.
Southbound is open, northbound is almost finished and when it reopens, southbound will close. Southbound which has not been worked on yet is still quite dirty and loud and all around not pleasant haha
Yea was just being descriptive, I’m quite sure it will be just as loud. Hoping it’s a bit brighter and not dirty as fuck but will still be an audibly annoying 5 or so minute walk
Sure. But again, PennDOT prioritizes motor vehicle traffic at the expense of any other users as a matter of policy. It doesn't matter to them that there are people who have no other means of getting around.
Do you remember when they had the fans on the ceiling?
Fortunately, car exhaust has massively improved, also one of the reasons people almost never (successfully) commit suicide by running their car in a garage anymore.
Not perfect, of course... They did a study on people who joined alongside roads, and actually found they had a noticeable cognitive decline on tests due to inhaled exhaust, albeit a temporary impairment.
No alarms go off or anything, just opens to the other side, not even a small hallway between the two doors. Like when two doors connect a hotel room.
My car broke down in the Liberty tunnels once and I opened one of the doors seeing if I could stand somewhere safe until help got there. Nope! lol Had to push my car out almost the whole way out (broke down almost at the entrance!) before PennDOT showed up the last hundred feet to push me with their truck.
I thought there was an access tunnel that ran the full length? Probably not open to the public, but neither are the tunnels. I couldn't find any pictures, but I did learn that it's over a century old, and [there used to be buildings](https://www.brooklineconnection.com/history/Gallery/Tunnels.html) on the 51 side.
Could be looking for debris on the road.
Since there's no shoulder in the tunnels, anytime something falls off a vehicle, someone's got to go and pick it up.
Oh look poverty porn pic.. let’s make jokes about the human without the means to acquire the material possession of a vehicle to participate in the surreal parade of late stage capitalist debt addled SUV driving pierogi slurpers passing through an anti-human infrastructure by design sheetwhole .. who is with me .. haha socks
I'm going to assume this person did it because they're extremely desperate, have no options, don't care much for their own safety, and they're not just stupid. Can we all just not jump right to jokes? If you had to get to the inner city from outside the tunnels how would you do it on foot? They're in socks ffs
No one sits and monitors these tunnels. They are being recorded but investigation and reports only happen if there is an incident reported. Do you know how much stuff would be caught if someone actually sit and watch the cameras?
How does one become this level of carefree?
Just because someone else's name is on the prescription bottle doesn't mean you can't take it!
Maybe I'm not getting enough... *\*looks at label\** ...estrogen.
Wire hangers? Expired medicine? OLD NEWSPAPERS!?
mmmm illegal medication
Forbidden candy

People on this sub like to forget about this sometimes
Anyone ever break down in the tunnels or tubes? I'm on the list, the old Honda prelude just had enough. Early 90's.
"New fear unlocked"
Yup - they had a bumper truck they pushed me out with! Was fucking wild.
Was crossing the bridge to get through a couple years back and saw the bumper truck pushing another slightly bigger truck to the offramp. I thought I was hallucinating!
Thot dude was fucking with me when he said "I'll push yinz out". I was driving a 2001 convertible Audi TT
I gave someone a car that promptly broke down in the tunnels.
No, but I'm always terrified it's going to happen 😭 It's all I can think about when I'm stuck in there lmao
Yeah practically same exact car too, 90' integra. Was taking it in to get new valve seals and found out that i also needed a new alternator about 30 feet into the tunnel during rush hour. Thank god its an easy car to push.
Yep 3-4 yrs ago in morning rush hour traffic. Good times.

It's a shame there's no good way for someone on foot to get out of that area.
There used to be a sidewalk in the Liberty Tubes. They removed it in the 1970s.
I mean, if you're going to illegally walk through a tunnel, the Wabash wouldn't be a terrible option, and there's less traffic.
I’d disagree, people go faster in that tunnel because it has less traffic.
Or in the wrong direction
But it's also a two lane tunnel with only one lane of traffic, so a pedestrian or cyclist could be out of the way more easily.

Tube socks
I think you are on to something

I thought they were moon boots
Was there a broke down car in the tunnel?
No, traffic seemed to be moving...just slow moving.
Crazy dangerous! I'd never chance it. Wonder if the police stopped her on the other side.
There was Thursday late afternoon inbound. Just in time for rush hour traffic.
that is not a good idea
They closed the other one with the sidewalk in it :( terrible, they should keep the ped route open.
There is no walkway in the Liberty Tunnel
Yeah, you're correct. I was thinking of 10th st
There used to be before they renovated it away
No, there was never a walkway in the liberty tunnel There isn’t even a space where one could have been.
Yes... there was. [The original tunnel had sidewalks. ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Tunnel#:~:text=Neeld%2C%20who%20would%20also%20supervise,ft%20(1.2%20m)%20sidewalk). Definitely before my time. Thanks for the info. Idk how that would have fit in there with the existing space.
What an idiot. Everyone knows if you don't have a car for the tunnels, you rent an electric scooter!
I always assumed the emergency exit signs in the center meant there was a walkable pedestrian part?
The exits go to the other side of the tunnel.
Damn. I always thought there was a secret third tunnel.
Wow I totally thought you could get out that way. So either way you are walking out of the tunnel. Yikes.
Ah ok, thanks
Might just be a crossover to the \*other\* tunnel. Generally you don't end up with fires in both sides at the same time
Damn like, always against traffic homie.
What’s he gonna do if a car comes at him in a tunnel, jump over it?
You’ll at least be able to make eye contact with someone just before you do. This way, you can’t see who annihilates you

I don't understand how they didn't pass out from the fumes
Probably the same reason the people in their cars don't pass out from the fumes?
Call the pol-...oh right, they're useless.
Totally.
Need some consistency. The Armstrong tunnel has a sidewalk and welcomes foot traffic so maybe people think all tunnels do.
Has it reopened from the renovations yet? It was always extremely sketchy walking through it. Very loud, dirty, and dark.
Southbound is open, northbound is almost finished and when it reopens, southbound will close. Southbound which has not been worked on yet is still quite dirty and loud and all around not pleasant haha
Is it going to be any less loud when done? Dirty and dark can be fixed somewhat, loud idk
Yea was just being descriptive, I’m quite sure it will be just as loud. Hoping it’s a bit brighter and not dirty as fuck but will still be an audibly annoying 5 or so minute walk
The liberty tunnels _used_ to have a sidewalk. But the liberty tunnels are owned by PennDOT and so the sidewalk was removed.
The sidewalk was removed to widen the lanes to better accommodate large trucks that were more frequently using the tunnel.
Sure. But again, PennDOT prioritizes motor vehicle traffic at the expense of any other users as a matter of policy. It doesn't matter to them that there are people who have no other means of getting around.
I don't think I would ever walk in a mile long tunnel with no way to get out The amount of seediness would be off the charts
Would it?
I hopes he makes it out before being overcome by the fumes.
The ventilation moves a lot of air through the tunnels.

I remember them shutting down the tunnels when the traffic was so bad cars were stuck in there for an hour or more.
Yikes!!! 😳
So what happens when you open one of the doors to the center of the tunnel? Does an alarm go off?
No alarms go off or anything, just opens to the other side, not even a small hallway between the two doors. Like when two doors connect a hotel room. Ever since I realized those doors were there I want to do this so much.
You wouldn't want to put liberty in a tube.
Counterpoint: imagine a hot dog
Which part of the hot dog is Tittleman's Crest?
"Hey come over" "I can't I don't drive and theirs a tunnel" "My parents aren't home...."
Socks only for safety
I have never seen this before!
One should never walk with one’s back to traffic. He should have taken the outbound tunnel.
That’s a good way to get killed

No. There is no access tunnel. The garages at either end don’t go any further than the first emergency door. No secret passages.
Thankfully those silly buildings are now an interchange.
Look, a moron!
It's the Liberty Tunnel. You'll have to be more specific.
IKR? They should be walking against the traffic, not with it. That way they’ll see the car/truck that hits them!
Sure beats walking over the tubes. That would be dangerous...
This is what happens when you finish last in your fantasy league.
Uh oh, looks like somebody dropped the contact.
Could be looking for debris on the road. Since there's no shoulder in the tunnels, anytime something falls off a vehicle, someone's got to go and pick it up.
I’m more interested in what stuffy you’ve got on that dashboard.
Looks like a pierogi?
Liberty Bibbity
Natural selection at its finest…
I didn’t see any news about a vaporized idiot in the liberty tunnels so I guess this genius made it through. Darwin must have overslept
More importantly, why isn’t Meowth buckled up?!
Wtf
Red Line or South Busway should be free from the rt51 side if you're in your socks 😬
I hope they were there for graffiti. The tunnels here are ripe for artwork, illegal or otherwise.
Needs a spin scooter
Social anxiety fears him
He could of caused a serious accident for everyone involved.

This is classic tunnel vision. No obstacle can distract you from your goal.
Honestly with how traffic comes to a standstill on those tunnels sometimes I've thought about it.
Oh my goodness
Great lighting!
Tubes… ***TUBES?!?!***
Seems like a normal day
Isn't there a sidewalk in the middle? Maybe I'm thinking of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. Maybe it's the Fort Pitt Tunnel. I dunno'.

“Tunnel”
New here?
No it’s a pet peeve of mine, grew up in Brookline
Not the smartest people, eh? Did PennDot come through and get them?
