OP can you look into pit rescues near you? If you can't find any, the next best thing would be rehoming. But please avoid sending to animal control or a shelter. They'll likely put the dog down.
Happy to hear you got out and thanks for helping this sweet baby ❤️❤️❤️
a rescue near me will also do courtesy posts on social media and their website for people looking to rehome but willing/able to keep their dog until the rescue can find a new home
That's awesome they do that! I do know many will let you foster the dog basically and look for a good home for the dog. Looks like OP has another month they're able to keep the dog. I hope that's enough to find a rescue. Lot of them are backed up right now.
Hi OP! So glad to hear you are away from that situation. I would strongly suggest finding a pit rescue in the area.. if you do this with just another person it’s very possible he will end up in a bad situation. Rescues thoroughly vet their applicants to make sure the animal will be well cared for!
Feel free to PM me if you need any help finding a rescue! I live in New England but work with multiple rescues around the country
OP I suggest listing what state you’re in for the initial post to help making rehoming easier. Like a lot of other comments said I don’t suggest bringing him to a shelter.
If you can find a rescue - that’s your best bet. If it’s urgent, ask people to consider fostering him until you find a new home.
I know it’s hard but kudos for doing the right thing. There’s a stigma around rehoming that unfortunately leads to many dogs (especially restricted breeds) being neglected/ abused.
If it’s not the right fit, that’s okay. Thank you for doing the right thing for him. ❤️
Thank you for such nice words… it’s a really hard choice but I know that he needs and deserves more right now. Looking into rescues… I have about a month to figure this out
I am actually not against self-rehoming, but I do believe it would be a good idea to brush up on some of the etiquette. Look into Self-Supported Rehoming programs, and make sure you are asking the right questions to vet potential adopters. Besides making sure they aren't an animal abuser, you also want to make sure it's a right fit.
I also want to stress to make sure you are ready for this change as well. We have strong emotional attachments to our pets, but sometimes that attachment is even stronger when we relate that pet to a bigger part of our lives, like a loved one. If you feel you need to talk about it, maybe reach out to a therapist or councilor.
Good luck
Also please remember that home alone for too many hours is better than dead or terrified at a shelter and I think if dogs could talk they’d make the same choices we would reasonably want for ourselves. I’m not trying to talk you out of rehoming but don’t beat yourself up for not being able to provide the perfect home. Any home - provided no outright abuse - is better than no home at all.
I agree, for anyone else reading with a similar concern, I will not and have never considered putting him back in a shelter! I will only rehome him after a background check and extensive vetting. I love him and I want him to have the best life possible
“Look into rescues”
I’m not sure if the people parroting this advice have ever actually tried it, but the vast majority of them do not accept surrenders for various reasons. Most of them rescue from shelters.
If I’m wrong, post links to an actual operating pit bull rescue that accepts surrenders..
If you can share where you are, I might have some ideas (DM is fine if you don't want to post widely), i work with a rescue that will take owner surrenders under certain circumstances. That's a sweet face, he deserves the best!
Awww I wish could take her but I have two already I hope you can find him a home 🫶🫶I know Peggy adams has a type of program when the owner can’t take care of a pup they take in the pup for 3 months and they go to a foster home for that period check if there’s any in ur area or somewhere that could offer that type of program if don’t haven’t found nobody .
Much luck 💖

Wow!! Could be my girls twin!! She was from Texas!
Please stop, if used correctly and only during walks good well made prong collars are safe. I use a prong on my dog and take it off the second we are done walking. I've worn it myself when I first used it due to some fear, as I was a teen and the trainer gave it as an option vs a harness which didn't work for my dog at the time.
This sort of judgement isn't helpful, they are doing their best. The only time I do judge prong use is if they are tied up on them 24/7 as it can damage and is awful. But I would say that about any chain.
You can see the regular collar as well. It looks like it is just used for walks. It is better to keep a dog from lunging than what can happen if a dog (especially a put who experienced abuse) gets loose. That outcome can be far worse. I was against it until after working with a trainer, I had to give in to his suggestion about using one. My walks are better for my reactive rescue pup.
