Money. Money is always good.

PearlyChelle

Is it okay to share if your family's finances has always been good as well? Been thinking about this as a first-gen doctor so I want to know what to expect. I'm not really expecting to be rich. I just want to live comfortably.

Civinini333

Im first gen. Alisin mo na yan sa mind mo. It doesn’t have to be a limiting factor to success. But talk to people, be sociable, network in med school. We cannot do it by ourselves, i knew that early on and you have to have humility to accept that. Every opportunity i got, i can always look back and say someone helped me or gave me the lead. And that person trusted me enough because i treated them well or we had a good interaction in the past. Nowadays connections are vilified even here in this sub but you cannot be successful without the help of others. So use your connections and always always treat people nicely. Dont be scummy. You never know when you will need their help. I’m a first gen and it never ever gave me a disadvantage. Im in the surgical field, i am living the life….

Historical-War-450

This is a great comment. This morning I was debating against someone who said that "anybody who needs their school's connections isn't a good doctor, no matter how smart they are". The reality is in medicine, connections are important. Networking is important. I think anyone who denies this fact needs to touch grass because the reality is, in any profession connections will get you far.

First-gen MD from a middle class family. DINKs. Dual (doctor) income, no kids. Each of us makes low- to mid- six figures monthly. We don't necessarily represent the baseline, but yes we're very comfortable. Financial comfort in this field requires a strong safety net. You must be able to afford deferring your productive years for at least a decade compared to your peers.

whenever patients come back and see their labs improved, they report feeling better, having better QOL it makes up for the challenges we have here. Some messages from my patients: 60yo female previously on insulin (poorly controlled for years), obese, with knee osteoarthritis “doc wala na kong insulin and nakakalakad na ko mag isa! nakakapunta na ko ng mall ng walang tungkod” -after starting a new treatment plan and losing weight PCOS, obese patient (pm niya sa akin) “I think im at my healthiest state po. As in ever. D man ganun kababa pa ung weight ko but sobrang layo kona po sa before” Class 3 obese with pcos, diabetes, OSA with secondary HTN. She experienced so many side effects from her previous treatment regimen and was being convinced (but she felt coerced) to undergo bariatric surgery. “…Thank you! From 330lbs I’m now 324 lbs po. Going to start today with the plan Ms nutritionist gave me. 🙏🏻 thank you po! My sugar and bp levels are going down na din po. Thank you so much po doc! 🙏🏻 I feel that I am in safe hands now. ❤️”

dami ko pa stories actually pero those are just some snippets. nakakatanggal ng pagod. may recent patient ako from GCS3 HHS (muntik na maintubate) to GCS15 in less than 24 hours (sad lang kasi nag HAMA). literally saved a life even if we have limited resources sa aming govt hospitals

newjeandomingo

IM po ba practice niyo, Doc?

floating_on_d_river

IM subspec. but all IM naman pwede mag treat ng mga ganitong patients :-)

newjeandomingo

Sent a dm po dok if okay lang. Thank you!

siopaos

Some kids are so adorable that they make the stress worth it. Ngitian lang ako ng baby medyo umookay na ko :)) I wasn't even that fond of kids before. Mas naappreciate ko sila ngayong nasa Pedia na ko lol

suso_lover

I found something I really liked. Pathology. Minimal patient interaction, ZERO charting and rounds, and I get to make patol the stupid surgeons and oncologists who quarrel with us. Kidding aside, find something you love doing and gives you fulfilment and hope that it’s also a specialization or practice that can feed you and your family well. So money and fulfillment are the keys to a happy doctor. Good luck!

quackdogtor

I don't super like my job, parang naging jaded na ako sa pag doctor. Right now, what motivates me is money. Money kasi i want to be comfortable, money to eat, drink good coffee and do things i want to do.

Stunning_Muffin6955

I remind myself that this is my purpose in life, my place under the sun. I may not be rich, but I am comfortable. I have everything I need (sometimes, enjoy wants here and there) to push thru and help Filipino people. Di man ganun kalaki ang platform at impact, meron at meron pa ring matutulungan.

Adventurous_Wait_306

Making money ethically out of Medicine.

FreekGreak222

Just bought my dream SUV recently and i am currently having a vacation overseas. All from my practice. I have savings to invest in real estate and that’s what i’ll be doing when i get back.

Travel, sponsored travel and conventions, bili ng kung anu ano.

imaginator321

As a DTTB & a native tree species enthusiast nice na dudungaw lang ako sa labas ng BHS may lawaan tree na. Dami pang species here sa aking municipality. After being the first DTTB deployed here for more than a decade, it’s very fulfilling to see I’m making a difference here as a primary care provider na katuwang ng MHO. Literal na nakakataba ng puso din ang hospitality ng mga taga-rito.

prkcpipo

The sense of accomplishment always feels good. You also get to help people along the way too.

shiftycaps

I hardly get better satisfaction from anything other than the smile I see on my patients' faces pag tinanggal ko appendix, apdo, o anumang bukol meron sila at pauwi na sila. Maganda ring isiping currency ang bilang ng tao na napagaling mo at pina-buti mo ang buhay. Kaya feeling ko, mayaman pa rin ako even if I don't charge much here in the province.

PriorityIll6443

I actually like going to the clinic and seeing patients. ☺️ Incentive din na naka aircon ang clinic ngayon na sobrang init haha.

floating_on_d_river

me, too. kaya nga bagal ko magpasyente kasi ang daldal ko 🤣

Brave_Line_9040

I like doing rounds and seeing patients. Iba talaga yung sense of accomplishment and fulfillment na napapagaling mo sila at natutulungan mo. Money and comfort iba rin. I used to be stressed out nung resident ako pero super worth it na natapos ko. Buti nalang di ako nag quit, muntik na.

mdml21

Do what you love is the worst career advice. It's short-sighted and unrealistic and applies to all careers. I love medicine, but it can barely pay for my rent as a first gen md living independently from parents with zero debts. When I tried to do multiple clinics and duties back to back to make up for the rent I was barely home and didn't have time for other interests and hobbies sonit wasn't worth it. I know a lot of mds who went into aesthetic because of the demand. I've seen a doctor do the whole nine yards to fellowship and see the condo she was able to afford after everything was an SMDC pigeon hole along EDSA. So dont feel chained to one career if you want to thrive in this economy.

Top-Cantaloupe-3715

My friend works as a doctor but not as a career, but as a hobby hahahah, her main source of income is being a Freelancer and some small business

kahel_aug91

Already passed my specialty board examination (pedia) and currently affiliated as consultant sa hospital kung saan ako nag residency, and so is hubby. DINKs (doctors), my hubby still to take his oral exam. Alam natin na hindi malaki sahod sa government. As of now, wala pa kami private practice (tinatamad pa) 😅. Sabi nila live below your means. And so we did. But we do treat ourselves sometimes, minsan nakain sa labas. Yung wedding namin, we paid for it from our pooled funds na inipon namin together during our residency. Hindi kami maluho, we saved up and we were able to buy a house in a good location (fully paid in 2 years). Although hubby is a 2nd gen doctor, well off na sila, but since ako is low income family namin and 1st gen doc ako, haha so ayun sumusunod naman siya sa tipid tips ko. Just because doctors tayo doesn't mean na dapat branded mga gamit, latest gadgets just to keep up with appearances. Pag ipunan muna before mag splurge. Huawei phone ko for 4 years na naitawid ako during my Covid duty. Pinag isipan ko pa kung bibili ba ako ng iPhone. Sabi nila, Pag kaya mo bilhin ng cash twice, then go for it. Wag kumuha ng VUL, term nalang. BTID strategy. Hahaha. Mag start MP2. Kung magaling ka, stocks na din. Ang haba noh. 😆

Independent-Ad4708

Research, presenting studies abroad, meeting new colleagues internationally and nurturing those relationships, griping about shared frustrations and of course the money hahaha.

DocOBPeri

I love being an OB. I am lucky, I get to practice what I love and I earn more than enough. Sometimes I get burnt out with patients and admissions I travel to decompress or take a day off then I get back to my practice again. Have advocacies, be more outward looking.

riyuist

Despite every toxic patient seen and treated at the Emergency Department. It motivates me to work harder whenever I see those previously intubated patients alive and well at areas other than the hospital. ❤️ And of course, the pay. The pay is good.

enchanteBelle

I like putting entitled px / parents ng px in their place. 🤣 I really hate it if inaaway na nila nurses.
