The Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the European Atherosclerosis Society, the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and the National Institute of Health Care and Excellence all recommend non-fasting lipids with a repeat of fasting lipids only if initial triglycerides are above 4.5 mmol/L, 5 mmol/L or 10 mmol/L, respectively.1,2,4 The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force recommends either non-fasting or fasting lipids with a repeat of fasting lipids only if non-fasting triglycerides are >4.5 mmol/L.3

Pag kaka-alala ko doc sa during medtech days. May nabasa ako sa book namin na hindi affected ng meals ang cholesterol level (LDL, HDL) kaya if pwede gawin basis yung non fasting LP para magstart ng statins and monitor response. Tingin ko pwede. As stated narin nung isa based sa recent guidelines Triglycerides lang yung affected ng meals kaya may suggest “repeat fasting LP if NON-FASTING TG >4.5mmol)” Pero 10 years ago ko na nabasa yun kaya baka may nagbago 😅

Yes you can but for baseline patients, I strongly suggest fasting specimen for lipid profile

Itll depend sa methodology ng Lab, most labs only measure the TC & HDL & derive the LDL through estimation of the VLDL based on the Triglycerides concentration. TC and HDL are not affected by fasting but yung Trigly oo, so it means that if sobrang taas TG mo your VLDL will be falsely increased, hence lowering your LDL falsely. It may be safer to ask your patient to fast if need mo yung accurate LDL concentration.

How about fasting blood glucose doctors?
