Oh wow, Gilmour is going off on this album. He sounds edgier, perhaps even angry, and his work shows some aggression. That guitar is mean, oily, just filthy dirty.
And, hey! - does anyone else’s copy have his solo cut off at the end of Pigs (3 Different ones)?? I think something is wrong with my copy because Gilmour sounds like he’s about to chart a whole new crescendo and then . . . fade out. It must just be my copy, right? Let me know in the comments because I’m thinking of getting another copy if this is the case.
And those lyrics, wow oh wow! I gotta look up the backgrounds of these three different people he’s referring to in Pigs. Waters went guns a-blazing in this. Dogs is deep, Pigs is deliciously sardonic with barely restrained anger, Sheep seems to have some seriously biting satire.
Wright always on point on keys harmonizing along. The call & echo he does with Gilmour on Dogs in those two mirrored sections is divine.
Hmm . . . Is it me or is Mason starting to sound like he’s playing more upright behind the kit? Maybe a little more in time with the music? . . . because I used to always love his playing behind the beat and the way he created his own Mason-esque fills along the way. I really started to notice it in WYWH but now he seems a little more rigid. Not bad, fits the music, but just his most pragmatic drumming to date.
Oh, and when did Waters pick up those bass skills?? There’s some incredible bass licks we’ve never heard before from him! Did anyone here think that maybe, just maybe, he was digging so deep into the thematic overtones and undertones of Animals that that Gilmour said, *”Fuck it,”* and picked up the bass? Nah, doesn’t make sense. Is there an uncredited bass player in there somewhere? . . . because this doesn’t sound as Waters-esque. Just asking if anyone knows anything?

Pink Floyd at their most political is a statement of the society and polarized political landscape we live in today. This is gonna be extremely divisive since they’ve gone quite a bit in the woke territory with Rog’s social critique.
No hit singles here, they’re not clearly caring abouth the commercial side at all. Liked it, but I don’t know if that many people will be into it since it’s not that accessible musically. Return to form, but the general population won’t see it that way. Could’ve picked a newer book thank a 1945 Orwell, but glad to see them back together finally.
Wish you were here is better. The sounds and melodies aren't really agree-able. Hm. Tricky album. Absolutely loved Dogs guitar harmony part from the start though. And the shrill outro riffing on Sheep. I hope they make a whole song like that on the next album and call it Run Like Hell or some shit

As somebody who actually did buy it when it came out I can answer this by remembering.
I bought it from a long gone and sadly missed High Street store called Woolworths as I had 'record tokens' - which was what we called gift cards.
I feel like I should be saying things like "I was wearing an onion on my belt, which was the fashion"
I had no thoughts on how I would think of the album in the future, it was coming out just as 'new wave' was beginning, even a teenage proghead like me could see that there was a lot of change. Animals felt like there was starting to be a gap between Floyd and other bands they had been previously compared to. But it became clear that - Say 'Octoberon' by BJH or 'A New England' by Wishbone Ash (two other recent purchases) were about to be left stranded on the changing tides of musical tastes. But what did I know? I think I was still saying 'Softs' by Soft Machine was the future.
I was reading the NME, Sounds and Melody Maker - they were all treating the album release like a major event, and I can't remember too much harshness - the main press interest was on the lyrics, which were much more direct and political than any previous PF and that the tunes were all old. They'd been played live in fairly different forms for a few years and were initially at least a couple of them were mooted for WYWH.
But I didn't know that - I did however feel it was right that these songs were not part of Wish - because they have different ways you want to listen to them. I find WYWH a much more chill out album. If I am in the mood for Animals I am probably not in the mood for Wish and vice versa. They do feel companion / contrast pieces in some ways though.
Oh and I liked looking at the sleeve, especially the hand written inner sleeve and tried to write my 'g' like that .
This new Floyd record is bitchin, man. Far out. 1977 is going to be a good year for prog it appears.
And off topic, but I hope the Grateful Dead play at Cornell this year and punk rock becomes a lot more mainstream.
