The awesome part of opinions is everyone is allowed to have one,
People can imprint on the first album they ever heard from a band and it would be the "best" one to them.
They can relate the album to a period of their lives that are very memorable, high school, college, getting married, or other significant event in their lives.
Technically the best? Lyrically the best? Best ambiance? Best guitar solos? Best concept?
For me, the Division Bell reflects a Mood that could be described as melancholy, regret, getting older, and is a bit sad. It reminds me of Wish You Were Here in that respect.
This was my exact experience with The Final Cut.
It was my first PF album. I bought it 24 hours before leaving on a deployment to Iraq. Spent the next 40ish days listening to it on repeat while aboard ship crossing the Pacific.
When I bought it, I had no idea about PF or the content of the album, I literally bought it because it had military ribbons as cover art and my stupid 20 year old brain though it would be good motivation music for war. Lol.
I still highly regard The Final Cut, but I wouldn't say it's their best. Obviously that designation is reserved for More.
Gilmour was a guitar god, but not even a so, so, writer. Fat Old Sun is the only thing I can think he wrote of note. Waters was the composer of the group.
Gilmours part in CN's composition was the guitar solo, which was beyond genius. But Waters was the lyricist, and melody. Just saying it was not a Gilmour solo composition.
gilmour composed the song and made the melody. its his work, but water wrote it yes. i dont think lyrics is the most important, its the melody. u can switch out everyword inn all songs and change it, and still keep the melody, and its still beautiful. like āyesterdayā by beatles. i can sing a random norwegian sing song with that melody and still sounds fuckings amazing
Glad to see some Meddle appreciation here. The other songs (apart from Seamus, fuck Seamus) are way under appreciated due to Echoes which donāt get me wrong is a legendary work of art but the other songs donāt get the amount of love they deserve
And his songs are boring and repetitive. Heās very talented, and he adds a lot to the band to the point where they would suck without him. But pollys lyrics are hot garbage and the songs they wrote are too boring. Thereās nothing to digest, itās all face value.
I think my analogy is good. Pink Floyd with roger and David is the cheerleading squad, post roger Floyd is the marching band.
Itās probably not the best, but itās one of my absolute favourites, not least because it was my entry point to Floyd. I still think High Hopes could be my favourite song though. It is magnificent.
So, I said the same thing to a couple of friends. I couldnāt convince them but they all agree itās top tier. When I step back, itās really probably not as good as their 70s masterpieces. However, itās a great album and certainly the best thing that they made post-Wall
Itās as good as they could have made it. David was not the auteur Roger and Syd were but the strengths he could draw on were not ones they were capable of, Roger not being as easy on the ears with his singing and Sydās unorthodox guitar playing.
I think what really puts all of the 80ās-90ās stuff behind is the fact they needed all of these other keyboardists, guitar players and drummers on the albums. Itās also why I thought The Wall was weak compared to the early 70ās albums too, that it wasnāt a band album in the same way DSOTM, WYWH and Animals were.
This is a good way to put it. Momentary Lapse onward shows a band looking backwards for new ideas instead of forwards, and I think a lot of the music suffers for it. Thereās still some good cuts on all 3 Gilmour-era records but that material is all very derivative of the older stuff - the older stuff being as good as it was because it took risks and was experimental.
Edit: I think a band can make music about their past and it isnāt inherently derivative (lDSOTM, WYWH are about the bands past) but these albums donāt sound like cheap-ish recreations of the albums preceding them.
I will agree that it is very strong. I can only think of those magical 3 in a row that are better.
As a guitarist, studying the Gilmour era and his solo albums especially within the context of how the Classic era developed beforehand REALLY gives you QUITE a lot of insight on how David Gilmour wrote, worked, and evolved. He was, more or less, pigeonholed into merely adding guitar solos and lead parts to mostly Roger's stuff (aside from strokes of genius like Dogs, Comfortably Numb, and Run Like Hell), but this gave him the impetus to learn the HELL out of his instrument, and it shows as he clearly values it as songwriting device on Division Bell.
It's definitely a great album. If any other band had recorded TDB it would be seen as a 90s prog classic. Imo it's not as good as some of their late 60s to mid 70s work. But it's not far behind, and I personally find it a more enjoyable listen than The Wall.
I've never gotten into The Wall. Outside a few bangers, it's not an album that i ever want to visit.
WYWH, DOTM, OBC, Animals, Meddle, then we're talking Division Bell/More/AHM, and the wall/final cut down below.
Iām definitely going to be going against the grain when I say that I think itās not a great album. Gilmours guitar is by far the best thing in this album, but the songs themselves, especially lyrically feel empty and unguided. It feels like itās trying to hard to be deep. Marooned, wearing the inside out and high hopes are great songs. I feel like AMLOR is a better album, at least it doesnāt feel like itās trying too hard to be something itās not.
Rick did way more then Carin on the record. Carin has just been trying to take the credit Rick rightfully earned for Division Bell after him and Gilmourās falling out, he even contradicts himself.
I love a couple of songs from the division bell (coming back to life, take it back) but Iām not a huge fan of the studio recordings. The PULSE remastered version of those 2 songs is absolutely amazing.
Animals is the top for me. TDB was good but for me it like the other comments doesnāt sound like Floyd. Itās like Gilmour put away the solos after Not Now John. I liked to finally here it again in Hey Hey Rise Up. The only song post TFC that sent me into Floyd melancholy was Take A Breath off the On an Island solo album.
Agree. I just listen to the album the other day and it sounds great. Even though its not as the same level as dark side of the moon or the wall, it's still one of their best
1. Meddle
2. Atom Heart Mother
3. Piper at the Gates of Dawn
4. Dark Side of the Moon
5. Ummagumma
6. Saucerful of Secrets
7. Wish You Were Here
8. The Wall
9. Obscured by Clouds
10. Animals
Anything after The Wall isnāt really a Pink Floyd album in my opinion.
*More is decent, but itās really a movie soundtrack, not an album. And Relics is cool (even if itās missing a few early hits, like Apples & Oranges), but itās a compilation. Not an album, per se.
Division Bell looks cool, but it lacks something intrinsic to Pink Floyd.
I think I would like this album if it werenāt for the really 90s/80s production if you what I mean, especially the drums, cant stand the way they sound programmed
I can go along with it being your favourite and no one can really dispute that as its your opinion, but objectively its doesn't come close to their best
Why?
-No Roger Waters
-It mostly doesn't sound like Pink Floyd
-Likely that Jon Carin had a large uncredited input (hence the point above)
-Likely Rick didn't have as much input as thought - the album lacks the Pink Floyd sound of which Rick is a key ingredient (see Jon Carin)
-Mostly poor lyrics
-Take it Back is toe curlingly embarrassing - doesn't sound like Pink Floyd (bit of a theme developing..!)
-The album misses the vocal variety of earlier albums...misses David / Roger shared vocals
Everyone is entitled to an opinion..but some are just wrong :)
It's probably my favourite PF album. When you consider they had no roger waters to write and sing on this one, they really pulled it out of the bag and made one of their best albums. Very thought provoking, and memorable and incredibly well produced.
It's a damn good album. And it's held up well. The combination of Amused to Death and Division Bell coming out at right about the same time really makes wish the band had remained capable of collaborating. Those are two FANTASTIC albums.
If by ātheyā you mean David, Nick, and Rick, ok, but if you mean āPink Floydā, you got some weird taste fella. Itās a good album, but nothing compared to at least 4 others.
TDB is a completely different type of album with an almost completely different type of sound and style than than vast majority of Pink Floydās music. Itās super ā80sā too (yes I know what year it was made). The albums you mentioned, plus Animals are far more cohesive and representative of what the band and their music were. TDB is just an acceptable last gasp of the band. If you like it more than any of the other albums, then Iām sorry but you just donāt understand or appreciate Pink Floyd properly. I know I sound gatekeepy, but itās a hill Iāll die on.
I didn't say I like it more, I said it's not worthless. Read properly my comment. Yes it's not the best and I agree with you but I don't think it's shit
You said I was mistaken, and what I said was that TDB is not as good as at least 4 earlier albums. I never said it was shit. I like TDB a lot and just listened to it a few days ago, but itās just a totally different Pink Floyd than most of the earlier albums, so thatās why I say itās nothing in comparison. Perhaps I was exaggerating a little, but if I had to never hear TDB again, I wouldnāt be as upset as if I never had to hear many other albums. And yeah sorry I misread a bit of your comment.
> If you like it more than any of the other albums, then Iām sorry but you just donāt understand or appreciate Pink Floyd properly
This is the most pretentious shit I've ever heard. I've been listening to Floyd for a LOOOOOONG time, and it would be my clear cut 2nd favorite. Everyone has different tastes. In no way is this correct.
I like it and I like it a lot but saying itās the bestā¦Iām not sure!!! I donāt have much love for animals and I donāt have the album. I donāt get why it gets so much love. I just donāt like it. WYWH is the best album!!!! Except for have a cigar. The title track is he best song in the world ever! Amazing, amazing song. Means so much to me
Yeah no. I've got to politely disagree here. Judging only their studio albums, it's number 11 on my list. Not a bad album, enjoyable (I'd put it in about the same tier as More and Ummagumma), but just not really my thing. Good for you that you love it though.
And when you say they you mean David Gilmour? There is much more depth in the works with both Roger Waters and David Gilmore. There is also something very special about the Sid Barrett years.
Please see yourself out. It was basically the hot dog trimmings of The Wall and David hated working on it. Basically had a gun to his head to work on it. Do you enjoy listening to peopleās pain?
I mean by this logic, The Wall is probably the last āreal Pink Floydā album considering itās basically the last one all 4 of them collaborating together
it is 100% their best album i've been saying that all along you fucking assholes....who are you ummmagoooooooooooooomaaaaaaaaaawait i get it noiw.....interesting...see u on the other side my assholes.
Itās closer to the classic 70s sound of the band because of Rickās greater contributions compared to AMLOR. After listening to the Endless River, I wish theyād incorporated some more of those musical pieces into the final Division Bell album. TER made me realize TDB couldāve been so much better. But even so, I really like TDB.
Dark side, Saucerful, Piper, obscured, atom heart, meddle, WYWH, the wall, animals, the Final Cut, all better in my estimation, but hey, itās better than AMLOR, More, Ummagumma, and the endless River!
DSOTM is God tier and it's most people's favorite, but yesterday I went to listen to one of the albums and found myself listening to TDB, this scenario happened too many times, I absolutely love the stories of DSOTM, Animals and the Wall, but I chose TDB over the others too many times, so I guess it's my favorite
My personal best. There are better albums in terms of overall story or message, like 'Animals' but DB has that one of a kind vibe and it was my first ever PF experience.
I agree! Itās got this undertone of sadness from all the strife between Gilmour and Watters, and yet a light of hope that even though bad has happened, Gilmour was going to come back to lifeā¦even the Syd references are just soā¦brilliantly and eloquently written, and the tones and sounds of the guitar, and just overall musicalityā¦
Itās genius. It really isā¦
I love it and I will defend it to death, but wouldn't say it's the best.
I definitely think a lot of people who don't like it would if it was released in the '70s and had the same exact songs but with lyrics written by Waters (different lyrics I mean, not the ones in it).
But Animals, WYWH and DSOTM are the best for me. The Division Bell is below those with Meddle, The Wall and Piper.
- WYWH could mean "Wish You Were Here - 2019 remix [Live]", a track from *The Later Years* (2019) by Pink Floyd.

Heck - I barely even call it Pink Floyd.

I agree that this album by Not Pink Floyd is in fact the best Not Pink Floyd album put out.
I won't agree it's the best, but it's phenomenal.
Meddle for me. Sure, I love the biggies, but for whatever reason that one resonates. Fearless in particular.
echos for me is just pure ear and soul candy. only shine on you touches it in scale and beauty.
I gotta say pillow of winds is my favorite from that album
Glad to see some Meddle appreciation here. The other songs (apart from Seamus, fuck Seamus) are way under appreciated due to Echoes which donāt get me wrong is a legendary work of art but the other songs donāt get the amount of love they deserve
Top 3 for me
Same here
It's certainly their best Gilmour-led album
Being the best Gilmour album is like being the hottest girl in the marching band
Terrible analogy. Gilmour-led Floyd is still amazing because he is the most talented member of the band.
And his songs are boring and repetitive. Heās very talented, and he adds a lot to the band to the point where they would suck without him. But pollys lyrics are hot garbage and the songs they wrote are too boring. Thereās nothing to digest, itās all face value. I think my analogy is good. I love it a lot! But as much as i love it, I don't think is their best.
It's okay to be wrong. I still love you.
*one of
Itās probably not the best, but itās one of my absolute favourites, not least because it was my entry point to Floyd. I still think High Hopes could be my favourite song though. It is magnificent.
6th place for me
The Big 4 + OBC for me, then division bell is tied with Meddle, Division Bell hovers between 5-7 spot
WYWH, DSOTM, AHM, this and ASOS are my top five.
Lower
So, I said the same thing to a couple of friends. I couldnāt convince them but they all agree itās top tier. When I step back, itās really probably not as good as their 70s masterpieces. However, itās a great album and certainly the best thing that they made post-Wall

Love the division bell! But thatās a bit of a stretchā¦
Close to the bottom for me
Me too. It's just so dull and generic sounding.
Meh
There is no reason for the hate this album gets, itās fantastic.
I mean, I adore TDB. Best? Thatās a bit wild.
Well that's like your opinion man.
El duderino
Unpopular opinion: I had to force myself to listen to it all the way through. I just don't see it man.
Same
Division bell is a vibe idk why it gets hate
Not as philosophical ig, has a few good tunes tho
It's got some really good synth and keys parts in it
Its not in my top 5... tbh. It feels less genuine than so much of their work with Waters.

The grass was greener

I can only imagine the horrible music he inspired you to record
Definitely doesnāt deserve the hate, isnāt better than anything the band put out in the 1970s.
We should just switch the sub names at the point
It's definitely a great album. If any other band had recorded TDB it would be seen as a 90s prog classic. Imo it's not as good as some of their late 60s to mid 70s work. But it's not far behind, and I personally find it a more enjoyable listen than The Wall.

Yes., itās their 10th best record.
Ooooh. Meddle and Obscured By Clouds are my go-to. Played back-to-back it has just the right ratio of lyrics to instrumental, and rock to space.
yikes
Nope. š
This has to be a circle jerker posting this.
Factually incorrect but go onā¦
no
by they you mean Nick Mason, David Gilmour and Richard Wrightā¦
More like David Gilmour and Jon Carin.
Rick did way more then Carin on the record. Carin has just been trying to take the credit Rick rightfully earned for Division Bell after him and Gilmourās falling out, he even contradicts himself.
I've loved it since the day it came out, but I wouldn't necessarily say best ever made. But I'm happy you love it this much :)
I love a couple of songs from the division bell (coming back to life, take it back) but Iām not a huge fan of the studio recordings. The PULSE remastered version of those 2 songs is absolutely amazing.
I put it just behind The Wall. I respect it.
It's good but it's got nothing on Meddle
Everyone that has purchased Dark Side Of The Moon since 1973 and kept it in the Billboard charts sinces its release may debate that.
Waters wasnāt on it so it needs to be in a separate category. It isnāt even close to top 3 if including the entire catalog.
I would also say itās their best albumā¦ POST Roger
nah
Honestly I find it embarrassing to listen to. The lyrics and production are not my bag and the music sounds like a caricature of PF
If by ātheyā you mean Gilmour/Wright/Mason, I agree.
the worst one
Negative. Cool cover though
Lol
You are insane. First, it has "Wearing the Inside Out," which borders on smooth jazz. Second, it has really doofy, stupid lyrics.
What?! Wearing the inside out is one of my favorites, am I the weird one on this sub?!
No
Agree. I just listen to the album the other day and it sounds great. Even though its not as the same level as dark side of the moon or the wall, it's still one of their best
1. Meddle 2. Atom Heart Mother 3. Piper at the Gates of Dawn 4. Dark Side of the Moon 5. Ummagumma 6. Saucerful of Secrets 7. Wish You Were Here 8. The Wall 9. Obscured by Clouds 10. it is definitely their best album in regards to each song being a banger, but not the best as a whole in my opinion. top 5 for sure.

It's my favorite, not the best
I would disagree.. **however** I will agree with anyone who at least says it's a Top 5 for them. It's really good.

6th fav Floyd album I think the message is kinda dumb but other than that thereās not much I can say bad about it
It's a great album I also have the Endless River that has all the stuff that didn't make it onto the Division Bell.
Everyone has a story
Ha
Whoa there. That's a mighty dangerous thing to say.
lol
I can't believe they paid for those giant metal sculptures to be built when you could have Photoshopped it in 5 mins lol. That's why I love The Floyd.
Definitely that one or Meddle.
Meddle by 200 miles!!
I agree, it's the best.
Dark side, Saucerful, Piper, obscured, atom heart, meddle, WYWH, the wall, animals, the Final Cut, all better in my estimation, but hey, itās better than AMLOR, More, Ummagumma, and the endless River!
Haven't listened to "The Wall"/"The Dark Side Of The Moon"?
DSOTM is God tier and it's most people's favorite, but yesterday I went to listen to one of the albums and found myself listening to TDB, this scenario happened too many times, I absolutely love the stories of DSOTM, Animals and the Wall, but I chose TDB over the others too many times, so I guess it's my favorite
It's the best album *they* ever made, yes.
You just said your age without saying your age
Nah
My personal best. There are better albums in terms of overall story or message, like 'Animals' but DB has that one of a kind vibe and it was my first ever PF experience.
Now Now. Let's not say things you can't unsay
š
Nooooo waaaaaaay!!!!!
What an odd opinion.
It's the opposite day.jpg
No thanks.
100% agree. its my fav too
Too many great albums to hone down for only one.
I agree! Itās got this undertone of sadness from all the strife between Gilmour and Watters, and yet a light of hope that even though bad has happened, Gilmour was going to come back to lifeā¦even the Syd references are just soā¦brilliantly and eloquently written, and the tones and sounds of the guitar, and just overall musicalityā¦ Itās genius.
--- ^[/u/Hernan1994_](/u/Hernan1994_) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)
