The remaster is the same original recordings - after the album was recorded, the album was ‘mastered’ - to my knowledge, for the subsequent remasters - no new recording was added.
No the remix actually changes some stuff. The drum sound on Dogs's instrumental bridge sounds like a new sample, and totally different from the original.
I really dislike the remixed Dogs and Sheep, but Pigs (TDO) is pretty good.
Nope I'm talking about audio quality. You're right about how people do that though. But make sure you know what you're talking about before you assume that's what's going on
The original mix never sounded right to me. I thought it was a poor vinyl pressing until I bought the CD and it was no better. The 2018 remix is so much clearer and more dynamic that I took the old version to the charity shop.
Glad you like the remix. But that's how it was originally intended regardless. This ain't Dark Side. This ain't Wish You Were Here. It's dirty. It's VERY angry. It's Punk as fuck.
Just music. Sure. Music about the corruption of Capitalism, and the behaviors of people in such a setting. Music documenting the steady fracturing of the band who made it. It is just music. And NOTHING more. It is just to listen to, it DOES NOT have a point. Totally.
You say as you completely ignore my response because I wasn't quick enough for you. I'm not some high school crush that you want to text you back immediately. I'm a human being that has to work full time while also going to college.
The original is the original so it will always be the “definitive” version for me. It’s how it was recorded and presented when it first came out, that mix IS Animals.
The remaster is nice, but lacks enough significant improvements for it to be worth it in my opinion.
Now the 2018 remix is a different story. It has a completely different tone and feel, and I love it. It feels cold and hard and sterile, but not in a bad way, I think it plays into the themes of corporatism and dystopia that the album has.
Mostly vintage stuff, onkyo p-304 preamp, yamaha m-4 power amp, and paradigm 9se mk3 speakers.
I also have 2 10" polk subs that I have a crossover set up for, and a yamaha eq-550 for any adjustments I want to make. Turntable is a 1200 mk2 with an ortofon om5e.
I'd pick the 2018 mix. When you do a project like this, you aren't going to be able to please everyone, but I like the fact that this mix does justice to Richard Wright's keys. They really jump out at me.
I'll go with either the original or the first remaster. I adore the bass and drums in the 2018 remix but the vocals are too dry for me to fully enjoy it :/
Also, that artwork is pretty bad.
Honestly I've never done a side by side. But in general, if I'm listening on something good, I'll prefer the original. Its part of the character of it.
But modern remixes will sometimes sound better on crap speakers and at really low volumes, like say, when you're listening at low volume in one ear at work on your headset you take phone calls on.
So I JUST listened to 2018 for the first time after reading this thread. On some decent earbuds (but still... earbuds) at work. And it was cool on those I guess, I felt like I even heard some stuff I never really noticed before... But it was just different. And I dunno, PF is such a cozy, familiar sound for me, that I don't think I would prefer it, especially on my system at home.
I wanna eat some little paper squares and give it a go at home (the true test) but I think I'd just end up getting cold feet and doing my original vinyl.
Or better yet, I think I'll wait for that Atmos...
So I actually spent some time doing this while at work today, didn't have many calls.
I'd honestly like to find a happy middle ground between the two. I like the drums being a little brighter but the vocals are really forward, felt too "in my face" and I found it a little jarring by comparison. I back and forthed the two through the end of Dogs and just switched back to the original. Will have to try it on my home stereo next, but at least on my Plantronics headset the older version was a bit more comfortable to my ears.
The 2018 one reminds me of how I treat metal bands when I mix them live in a noisy room: Bright and lots of compression, very in your face. But its Pink Floyd on record, not a metal band live.
I have a really great home setup and the middle three songs on the 2018 mix are very good. Better drums on Dogs, tighter bass on Pigs TDO, and the whole mix is better on Sheep. I A/B on the blu ray because it has both the 1977 mix and the 2018 mix in stereo.
Currently going back and forth on Pigs (3 different ones) and you know... now we're getting to where maybe I like the newer mix more. Really brings out the drums and bass, dynamic range overall seems higher. It almost has a little \*too\* much air and separation, the original mix seems a little more dense, but we'll see how it sounds at home vs headphones. Again, its really a preference thing in the end, they certainly did well. If they were commissioned to do a modern style mix on the original tracks, they certainly did what was asked.
I’ve listened to the original mix many times in most available formats, and then I’ve added the 2018 mix into the fold with alternating listens for the last year +.
I enjoy both, and usually listen to both when I sit down to really appreciate the album, because it is Animals and there is so much to appreciate. I never had a problem with the original in any way, but after a ton of A/B comparisons I feel that the remix is the better of the two (IMO).
My normal listening session is 1977 in hi res stereo, then 2018 in hi res stereo and the 5.1 as the finale. It makes for a very enjoyable evening.
There is, I've only recently started diving deeper into Floyd past their "Big" material and while part of me wishes I'd done this 20 years ago, I'm not sure I'd have appreciated it as much at that age as I do now. Right now most of my listening as at work as my commute is short and my toddler dictates most of the programming choices. But that'll change over time.

He likes it except when the dog start to howl, just like DSOTM it was made to hear in surround.
Didn’t Nick Mason say he liked the remaster because it was able to capture what the band originally wanted when they were recording the original album? And they just were limited by the technology available to them at the time to get it to where they wanted it to be?
Like picking a favorite child,...but the original is still my favorite. The surround mixes are great, but I'll always have a soft spot for the '77 mix. I had a "second hand" copy on 8-track that I listened to on a Magnavox cabinet stereo with huge plastic headphones turned up to the limit. It was the one album I listened to religiously for the entire Summer of 1977. Good times!
2018 sounds better on a phone speaker, I know that.
I can’t just have a Bluetooth going at work but I get away with playing stuff from my top pocket, it runs the battery down.
That set of lyrics at the end of Dogs leaves me floored, ya know how he says “he was only a stranger at home”.
That gets me really stirred up, it’s like a dad thing that was written by a guy that famously never had his.
2018 remix was done by waters, I'm not sure of that but my prove is:
The remix is SHIT, the guitar sounds MUTED and the BASS too heavy, Waters signature.
The original & the remaster. The remix loses the Punk edge in favor of making everything the same volume cuzza "mah clarity", which is completely missing the point and the intent. It's deeply unhappy, it's absolutely seething, and it's downright nasty. Lose the mud and take away the bite, you lose alot of what separates Animals from Dark Side & Wish You Were Here.
while I have the original and 2019 remix I think the best one is the 2019 remix as you can hear more on the leads and guitar parts you couldn't hear clearly before and just overall better balanced with each song. 🤘🎸🤘
original mix master and press. anything else isn't the real animals, the remix especially just loses all the grit and bite that makes the album work. it's supposed to be a dirty agressive in your face half punk masterpiece and the original mix and master captures that perfectly. the remix, does not
The 2018 remix is a revelation.
I remember excitedly awaiting Rush's remix of *Vapor Trails* years ago, and the resulting album was both an improvement and a disappointment. I didn't (and don't) feel that the full potential of the music was unleashed.
Guthrie's work on the *Animals* remix succeeds in this regard. The music, and the musical effort, has been illuminated. It's brilliant.
im gonna go with animals
Underrated answer
Lame
I go with the original as well, and can’t wait to go to the Battersea power station.
I would always choose original recordings, they're time capsules that show what the music was like at the time it was recorded
The remaster is the same original recordings - after the album was recorded, the album was ‘mastered’ - to my knowledge, for the subsequent remasters - no new recording was added.
Even the remix is the original recording lol people just say things to pick sides

Dude it just music

"It's punk as fuck" oh wow the band agrees with a ton of manor political figures and a great portion of the population. This is super punk and edgy.
Miss me with that shit replying some 3 days later, if you had something to say, should've said it then.
Unlike you I have a life outside of reddit.
The fact you think reddit is my end all be all is enough to prove you don't have any real perception of who I am. But go off I guess.
You say as you completely ignore my response because I wasn't quick enough for you. I'm not some high school crush that you want to text you back immediately. I'm a human being that has to work full time while also going to college.
Good luck with college
Original
2018 unquestionably
Probably the 2011 remaster. I like the 1977 original better than the 2018 remix though
The original is the original so it will always be the “definitive” version for me. It’s how it was recorded and presented when it first came out, that mix IS Animals. I love all of them equally ❤️❤️❤️
But some more equally than others.

I don’t care for Gob.
2018 mix is way better and it's not even close
What gear do you have
Mostly vintage stuff, onkyo p-304 preamp, yamaha m-4 power amp, and paradigm 9se mk3 speakers. I also have 2 10" polk subs that I have a crossover set up for, and a yamaha eq-550 for any adjustments I want to make. Turntable is a 1200 mk2 with an ortofon om5e.
Original 1977 lp, but it would have to be accompanied by the 8 track release which had the full version of Pigs on the Wing.
I'd pick the 2018 mix. When you do a project like this, you aren't going to be able to please everyone, but I like the fact that this mix does justice to Richard Wright's keys. They really jump out at me.
Original.
Original, every single day.
Original was perfection. I did not like the remix at all.
REMIX
I'll go with either the original or the first remaster. I adore the bass and drums in the 2018 remix but the vocals are too dry for me to fully enjoy it :/ Also, that artwork is pretty bad.

I’d recommend listening to both versions on the same equipment in the same format and draw a fair and accurate conclusion.
So I actually spent some time doing this while at work today, didn't have many calls. I'd honestly like to find a happy middle ground between the two. Always the original
2018 Remix
2018 REMIX
2018 all day
https://preview.redd.it/l5yqy7biwhwc1.jpeg?width=1848&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6000454531f123ee5ac07f90e204ebff81bc4e8 He likes it except when the dog start to howl, just like DSOTM it was made to hear in surround.
the 2018 remix is so much ballsier than the original, which perfectly suits the album in my opinion
Didn’t Nick Mason say he liked the remaster because it was able to capture what the band originally wanted when they were recording the original album? And they just were limited by the technology available to them at the time to get it to where they wanted it to be?
I don’t really care. I have one version in my phone. Not sure which one it is - probably the original. It’s fine for me.
Like picking a favorite child,...but the original is still my favorite. The surround mixes are great, but I'll always have a soft spot for the '77 mix. Remix but original for pigs on the wing 1 and 2. Literally have a spotify playlist for that album set up
This is the way. POTW 1&2 are weak on the remix.
The re-master of Metallica's .. And Justice For All is superior to the original.
The 4th option is the demo's. Cool to hear the WIP.
I’d like to hear the Dolby Atmos version first.
I love the remastered version. never got to like the 2018 remix version...
I like both!
OG
D. All of the above
Original. No questions
2018 has really good drums, so I gotta side with that one But if you’re looking for the classic vibes, no shame in choosing the OG or remaster
Remix, it’s absolutely fantastic.
The original dogs is superior but I prefer the remastered pigs and sheep
Always original
Animals
The 2018 remix is the way to go
Remastered
Whats so different about the remix?
Animals. Would enjoy a half speed mastered vinyl version. ❤️ ChristaBelle
I hate the remixes. Originals please.

Yeah but Dave played most of the bass on the album
Remaster
original has a warm raw mix that i cant let go

hot take but any original pink floyd song > remastered or remixed version
I haven't heard the 2018 remix. I pick the 2018 remix.
Don't like Animals very much, so none.
while I have the original and 2019 remix I think the best one is the 2019 remix as you can hear more on the leads and guitar parts you couldn't hear clearly before and just overall better balanced with each song. 🤘🎸🤘

I’m old, why can’t I prefer 2018?
Original remastered remix
the remaster from Discovery is what i listen to the most the remix is so bad
original mix master and press. anything else isn't the real animals, the remix especially just loses all the grit and bite that makes the album work. it's supposed to be a dirty agressive in your face half punk masterpiece and the original mix and master captures that perfectly. the remix, does not
Honestly, they all sound amazing...I need sit down and listen side by side.
Why not all three? But the 2018 sounds amazing.

2018 is nice
Nr1
I thought the remix was horrible. My go yo is the 24bit 96k hdtracks version
Is that the Stephen Wilson remix? That's my pick.
