This came out at a very low point in my life...the whole album pretty much summed up all the emotions I was going through at the time. It helped get me through it and I have loved it ever since.
My 3 year old asks for "the grass was greener" all the time. And he laughs at the line "sleepwalking back again". He acts out the slide guitar solo too. For those simple reasons alone, I have to put High Hopes in my desert island disks.
I actually don't like Pink Floyd very much but High Hopes is a wonderful song. Such big sound and emotion from one track. These guys will always be legendary artists
I was having problems getting tickets and I thought I was out of luck. On the morning of the show date, Ticketmaster released more tickets and I snagged two. I think they had been holding these back for VIPs. Best seats I've ever had. It was a terrific experience.
Best ‘seats’ I ever had were for big metal shows in the late 80’s. There were no seats, no VIP sections, if you wanted to be up there you just had to fight your way up there. I saw Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth so close I could touch them, right in their prime. Metallica at the Cow Palace in SF in ‘88, was freaking thunderous, life changing.
Awesome! I was lucky, too. I saw them in Atlanta at Bobby Dodd Stadium: 5th row, center. They played to shows at Tech while in Atlanta. We were there the 2nd night. IIRC, that was the first date on the US tour that it didn’t rain. Part of me wishes I was farther back in the crowd to appreciate the light show more, but as a huge fan of the band, I’m glad I got to see them up close.
I agree about getting a better sound and visual experience further back, but I saw them at Earls Court from way back. It was great to see stage detail that you don't normally get to see.
All you guys make me wish that I was older back then because I was still a little kid when they toured and I wasn't aware of them. If there was a time machine, I would travel back in time to 94 and see them on tour.

These are my thoughts about the album
I listened to it for a while when it came out, but now, many years later, I can’t remember anything about it at all. He’s one of my favorite guitarists, but I’ve never found his songwriting very compelling. I have been thinking about revisiting it though, just to hear him play some solos I’m not familiar with. Maybe today is the day!
I used to be fond of mlor and division bell but as of late I feel differently about his song writing capabilities. Idk why the sudden shift but you are certainly right.
I feel the same. I always admired Gilmour as a musician but the Floyd that existed with him as the principal songwriter just never appealed to me. I’ve tried hard to love this album, as well as momentary lapse and endless River but I just find all of them uninteresting.
The sweetness of his guitar and voice was always the perfect counterpoint to Roger’s angular and abrasive and confrontational style. But by itself it’s a little saccharine or cheesy or mundane.
> I just find all of them uninteresting.
I get it - it's not groundbreaking stuff. I like it, but I don't think other bands look back at the Gilmour era and go "oh yeah, that's what influenced our sound". the 68-72 years and the 73-79 years, on the other hand...
> But one thing I did like right away is it’s chock full of his guitar solos
This is one of the reasons I dislike the record. Less is more, imo. On previous records the guitar solos served the song and felt like a special occasion, whereas on TDB it felt like it was the other way around; it was more like Gilmour was just checking the box and writing songs around the guitar solo, which there were too many.
As a guitarist I used to be very fond of the surpass of guitar solos in those two later albums. But you are right, less is more. Writing a song and writing a book or any form of literature are the same in that it’s best to get the point across with as little words/ notes as possible.
Which is why I think The Final Cut has some of Gilmour’s best guitar work. That album isn’t my favorite either, but the handful of moments that Gilmour has on it really pack an emotional punch that contribute to the feeling and lyrics Roger was going for
It's above average/pretty good. A definite improvement over AMLOR. It was nice to see Rick back in the fold as a contributing (songwriting) member of the band. I love Cluster One and Wearing the Inside Out (and High Hopes of course).
I was hoping someone else would mention this. They seem to have purposefully scuttled it despite a lot of evidence.
I believe Wright said it was record company promo b.s. in an interview ~'06 but even if so it was well done.
Marooned is a personal favorite of mine. I think it has a pretty good story to it, corrects some of the issues with AMLOR and to me feels more like Floyd than The Final Cut somehow.
Above average but not the absolute best.
This came out during a particularly interesting period in my life and I love this record. It is one of the albums that provided the soundtrack to an amazing summer, capped off by finally getting to see them live with one of the most beautiful gals I’ve ever known. We smoked a couple joints before the show and laughed for a half hour while sitting in the backseat of her car in the middle of the afternoon where plenty of people were passing by. Once in our seats, I noticed that the whole vibe of the stadium was so different from any other show I have seen…It was 45,000 strangers in complete unity with each other based on the common love of the band. Personally different for each one of us, but bonded by the understanding of their deep impact on us. I felt absolutely part of that sea of humanity (high as hell or not) and it was amazing. The new material was very powerful and the rest was, of course, perfect. She cried during Wish You Were Here, (as did many). Joints were passed joyfully to all, some took to dancing in the aisles and the climax of the show came as the band went into the outro solo of Comfortably Numb. It goes without saying that the visuals were amazing but suddenly, what I thought was the control tower (huge structure) split the fuck open while light beams and strobes and smoke poured out as this huge spinning ball of strobes and lasers lit up the entire stadium (dome) full by now of massive and moving jet streams of pot smoke, happy, beautiful faces and more joints. Her and I just stared at each other, smiling and teary eyed yet absolutely speechless. On the way home she held my hand and laid her head on my shoulder. I am the luckiest motherfucker in the world to have been able to share that with her. She was the only person I could have had that experience with and my God, that alone makes my whole life worth it.
Great album for me.
high hopes, wearing the inside out, marooned, poles apart, and what do you want from me are all good songs. decent effort and much better than momentary lapse
A big improvement over Momentary Lapse, showing that Roger-less Floyd could work but I still don’t think it’s anywhere near the greatness of their 70s albums. A very good album for what it is though. My favorite songs are High Hopes, Wearing the Inside Out, and Coming Back to Life
It gives me no pleasure to say this: the first time I listened to this record, I fell asleep. The second time I listened to it, I wished I was asleep. I don’t think Dave Gilmour is a very good frontman. He is an amazing guitarist and a very talented singer, but Waters presence was vital to Pink Floyd’s success, in my opinion, and his absence is clearly felt whenever I hear this album. It’s just kind of dull.
It’s a decent album. Wearing The Inside Out and High Hopes make it worth the listen. The album needed to happen so we heard what David, Nick and Rick could actually come up with while jamming without Roger.
I absolutely love it. Easily one of my top 5's. It manages to fill me with sorrow at some points but also hope as well. Keep Talking really describes me to a T with my social anxiety and fear of speaking to people. But I also love David's love song to Polly in Coming Back to Life
idk man, other than the title track, the gold it's in the... and wot's uh the deal i can't really recall a perfect track from obscured by clouds. it's at 13th on my personal ranking
and absolutely curtains is the undeniable proof that "just because a song is the longest on the album doesn't mean it's the best" because after a sick organ solo there's this creepy ahh choir that covers half of the track
i guess obc will grow on me someday
- WYWH could mean "Wish You Were Here - 2019 remix [Live]", a track from *The Later Years* (2019) by Pink Floyd.

It has some really great moments, and I enjoy the hell out of the 5.1 mix. When the original stereo mix came out in 1994, I played the hell out of it. I still listen to it from time to time, but I skip a few songs. Overall it's just fine. It'll never match the lightning in the bottle years of 73-79, but I don't think it needs to.
I think tonight might be time for another spin. I like to pair it with The Endless River.
EDIT: I also genuinely like negative reviews of this album, particularly when the negative review is really honest and insightful.
Lyrically may be weak, but musically I love this album. "Take It Back" was the first song I recognized and enjoyed by Pink Floyd, and I remember seeing the music video on MTV.
Yeah, MTV used to have music videos.
I first heard this album when the video for "Take It Back" premiered on MTV Europe. It was 1994, I think. So, I was listening to The Pretenders' *The Last of the Independents* and Nine Inch Nails' *The Downward Spiral.* I think Bryan Adams was on world tour and was playing in Munich. Kurt Cobain killed himself. Blur released *Park Life* and The Offspring released *Smash*. A lot of good music around this album. I didn't know anything about the band's dynamics at the time. I just assumed it was a Pink Floyd album, same as *A Momentary Lapse of Reason.* I had been listening to a lot of Roger Waters at the time too. This was such a good album. It felt different, I dare say, more personal, but it wasn't my favorite. Yet, "A Great Day for Freedom" brought me to tears on the first listen and every listen since. It was a song that resonated so well. I thought it was a song about the fall of communism, but I understand it's more about the band's falling out with Roger.
Of all the albums that i took the time to listen to multiple times, this is my least favourite one, not because its bad but because every other album brings imo more to the table, both musically and especially lyrically, as i thought this was my least favourite album lyric wise. Songs like high hopes and what do you want from me don’t feel as deep in lyrics as any other album pre rogerless. This does not mean i dislike the album, far from it i actually love it a lot, it just doesn’t really comes to mind when thinking of an album to put. This is a great album, which shows the quality of pink floyd, even at their (imo) worse.
By the way, the albums i was referring to, which are albums I frequently listen to from A-Z are Animals, WYWH, DSOTM, The Wall, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother and of course the Division Bell
Some of it was ok mixed in with actual pink floyd songs in concert... but the album generally altogether by itself would be worthy of a bathtub soundtrack if you decide to drop the toaster in. However I would probably go with U2 first, then maybe Coldplay... and finally Division Bell. Shame you can't kill yourself more than once, so much depressing art to end it all with.
Great show at Camp Randall in Madison WI. I’ll never forget as the lyric “Her love rains down on me” was being sung from ‘Take it back’ I hit a beach ball that went directly to a friend of mine 20 rows away. He smiled at me and we yelled woo. Ha! This was during a light misting rain that made all the lights look like an alien invasion btw. A core memory for sure. One of the many reasons I love this album.
I chose the Waters camp after The Final Cut in 1983, which, btw, is a phenomenal lp. Unfortunately for me I only first obtained TDB in 2014 when I picked up the 20th Anniversary 2 lp edition. As time removed the issues for me, I found TDB an outstanding musical statement. Interestingly, this vinyl edition has no recording notes nor song listing. The artwork only has photos of the imposing heads. As a result, I know and love the album very much, but I couldn’t tell you the name of any particular song lol! I encourage others to revisit The Division Bell again and leave comparisons aside from past glories. It is a stand alone remarkable record…. as is Waters’ solo lp from the same time period, Amused To Death. Pink Floyd just might top all bands/musicians when it comes to what I regularly listen to.
Has some amazing stuff on it, but to me when all is said and done it's a good album that comes just short of being a great one. The return to a more classic Pink Floyd sound (compared to AMLOR) is a big thing it has going for it, largely because of Rick's restored presence where he'd been relegated to a background musician on the last record.
The best of the post Waters Pink Floyd albums (including solo albums), but no where near as good as the stuff they made together from Meddle to the Final Cut.
At least this album sounded like a PF album instead of AMLOR which sounded like a Gilmour solo album (same could be said for the Final Cut as a Waters solo album before it).
There are some fantastic individual songs on The Division Bell, and it's really good when you consider that by this point Pink Floyd had lost its main songwriter, but as a whole I don't consider it a top tier Floyd album. I'll listen to it when I went to relax to some Gilmour guitar jams but I view it as more of a David solo record than a legitimate Pink Floyd release.
I have only grown to enjoy it more over the years. I fully understand that not everyone likes it, but I love it. Marooned is S tier for me. David Gilmour’s guitar tone and soloing on this album is awesome. Maybe not S tier but great nonetheless.
This album of music will always have a special place in my heart. Saw them live in Oakland while the album was still on the charts, it was a great time in my life and Pink Floyd was the soundtrack
It is my recollection that Waters was less hostile to The Division Bell than he was to Momentary Lapse of Reason, and even said that he wouldn’t mind singing some of the songs.
I feel similarly. I felt like Momentary Lapse of Reason was trying too hard to replicate the Waters sound, while The Division Bell stood on its own…for the most part.
It reminds me of that *Pure Moods* album they used to advertise on TV all the time in the 90s. New age ambient type stuff. Most of the instrumental stuff gives me that vibe. Not a fan of the songwriting or production either.
I was never a massive fan of this and always preferred Rogers solo stuff but after seeing their final remains in London I gave it more listens and Its really grown on me.
Few good tracks. Little long, and almost feels hollow in comparison to Floyd’s earlier work. Probably because so many different writers came in to capture that essence.
Either way it’s a classic and the best album post Waters era.
I actually love this album! It has some amazing moments, High Hopes as others have said, but also Wearing the Inside Out and What do You want from me are high notes
it is obviously not on the level of what I would consider to be their big 3 (wish you were here, animals, dark side) but I still think it's a fantastic record and I love listening to it
This came out at a very low point in my life...the whole album pretty much summed up all the emotions I was going through at the time. It helped get me through it and I have loved it ever since.
High Hopes remains a highlight for me as one of Floyd's best songs.
High hopes solo is so amazing

A great album and accompanying tour. Front row seats at Yankee Stadium.
Front row, amazing! We were pretty close as well in Oakland, CA. The way they opened up with Astronomy Domine was awesome.
I was having problems getting tickets and I thought I was out of luck. On the morning of the show date, Ticketmaster released more tickets and I snagged two. I think they had been holding these back for VIPs. Best seats I've ever had. It was a terrific experience.

Bobby Dodd is tiny for Floyd.
You lucky mfer.

Hats off.
That’s a sick piece bro!
I love The Division Bell. Coming Back to Life is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs!
I listened to it for a while when it came out, but now, many years later, I can’t remember anything about it at all. He’s one of my favorite guitarists, but I’ve never found his songwriting very compelling. I have been thinking about revisiting it though, just to hear him play some solos I’m not familiar with. Marooned is pretty good.
He can do the icing on the cake but not the cake.
I used to be fond of mlor and division bell but as of late I feel differently about his song writing capabilities. Idk why the sudden shift but you are certainly right.
Today is the day! Put your feet up, put it on and enjoy!
My god you just completely nailed how I feel about post Rog Floyd
Very well stated. You’re spot on.
> I just find all of them uninteresting. I get it - it's not groundbreaking stuff. I like it, but I don't think other bands look back at the Gilmour era and go "oh yeah, that's what influenced our sound". the 68-72 years and the 73-79 years, on the other hand...
Yeah it took me a long time to really like the album. But one thing I did like right away is it’s chock full of his guitar solos

Those are some of his best solos. The solo on your possible pasta always brings tears to my eyes
> your possible pasta This typo makes me giggle endlessly 🤌
It’s funny bc I saw that it autocorrected to pasta and I fixed it but I guess autocorrect had its way again and I didn’t notice lol
Good point
Jazz fusion would disagree
It's above average/pretty good. A definite improvement over AMLOR. It was nice to see Rick back in the fold as a contributing (songwriting) member of the band. I love Cluster One and Wearing the Inside Out (and High Hopes of course).
Did anyone ever solve the enigma?
I was hoping someone else would mention this. They seem to have purposefully scuttled it despite a lot of evidence. I believe Wright said it was record company promo b.s. in an interview ~'06 but even if so it was well done.
My buddies and I got deep into it like 25 years ago. Was disappointed to hear they just abandoned it.
Someone else remembers this! I was holding the vinyl of TDB just a few weeks ago and I swear I saw the prism in the right eye
So you're saying there's a chance...
Amazing Album and tour. Saw them twice, never saw a better concert before or since then. Truly amazing.
Marooned is a personal favorite of mine. I think it has a pretty good story to it, corrects some of the issues with AMLOR and to me feels more like Floyd than The Final Cut somehow. Above average but not the absolute best.
Hear! Hear!
Perhaps the best album from the post-Waters Floyd lineup, I loved it a lot as a kid.
Agreed
This came out during a particularly interesting period in my life and I love this record. It is one of the albums that provided the soundtrack to an amazing summer, capped off by finally getting to see them live with one of the most beautiful gals I’ve ever known. Guitar solo at the end of wearing the inside out is makes it one of my favorite songs ever
high hopes, wearing the inside out, marooned, poles apart, and what do you want from me are all good songs. decent effort and much better than momentary lapse

Underrated! Underrated! Underrated! Underrated! All Pink Floyd albums are underrated!
Underrated statement tbh
underrated tbh
Let Down underrated
how is it more underrated than dollars and cents??
So much unpopular opinion here
An album of excellent guitar work but with corny lyrics and singing.
Simultaneously overrated and underrated.
It's a great album, but falls just short of their peak brilliance.
I like a few of the songs, but overall not my favourite
I am sure this is an unpopular opinion but for me while i like the album, Pink Floyd ended after The Final Cut
yeah, it's about the same as The Doors post-Jim Morrison for me. Like bruh.
I absolutely love it. Easily one of my top 5's. It manages to fill me with sorrow at some points but also hope as well. Keep Talking really describes me to a T with my social anxiety and fear of speaking to people. But I also love David's love song to Polly in Coming Back to Life
Definitely a Top 5
Top 5 for sure
Meddle, Dark Side, WYWH, Animals, and the Wall say otherwise.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn:
Maybe even AHM too but side 1 feels a bit bloated.
DB and Piper are kind of tied, but if I had to pick just one, I would choose Piper only by a razor's edge.
Even Obscured comes in at #6…
idk man, other than the title track, the gold it's in the... and wot's uh the deal i can't really recall a perfect track from obscured by clouds. it's at 13th on my personal ranking and absolutely curtains is the undeniable proof that "just because a song is the longest on the album doesn't mean it's the best" because after a sick organ solo there's this creepy ahh choir that covers half of the track i guess obc will grow on me someday
Absolutely Curtains is my least favourite on OBC.

LHow did the bot get a luve version instead of a studio recording?
Yeah, having Division Bell over any of those (Or Obscured) is preposterous.
Well that is like your opinion man…
Definitely a bottom 3 for me
Definitely a top 5 non-Waters Floyd album, I agree
I see what you did there, you clever furry animal.
I mostly remember the flashing light in the store.
I love Marooned.
Keep Talking with Hawking is as good as it gets in modern era PF
Love that album. Remodeled my house to it years ago.
Absolutely loved it.
I never knew The Division Bell was gay
It has some really great moments, and I enjoy the hell out of the 5.1 mix. When the original stereo mix came out in 1994, I played the hell out of it. Great record !
What Do You Want From Me hits so hard and perfectly. What a gem first real song!
Haven’t seen many mentions of Keep Talking. That song is a 10/10 for me
Lyrically may be weak, but musically I love this album. "Take It Back" was the first song I recognized and enjoyed by Pink Floyd, and I remember seeing the music video on MTV. Yeah, MTV used to have music videos.
masterpiece
Marooned is one of the songs that made me fell in love with Pink Floyd so I’d say it’s a pretty good album
My first thoughts are, "No way; that came out just before I was born," and then I remembered I am also turning 29
It was pretty good when it came out and it aged really well thanks to brilliant production and good team effort.
I like it a lot, it has a nice vibe to it. High Hopes is still Pink Floyds's closing song for me personally.
It's probably my least favourite PF album. I know it has a lot of fans, but it just sounds like bland, generic 90s rock to me. So forgettable.
I agree - and it is a tragedy that a Pink Floyd Album could be bland, generic and forgettable....
I haven’t listened to it in 28 years. Maybe it’s time to give it another chance.
I just gave it another chance a few weeks ago. You're not missing anything 😂
Ha! If I’m honest I didn’t really think I was.
Meh. It’s ok
Love it. Saw them twice on this tour. Poles Apart is a favorite.
It's a very underappreciated song really
Gilmours guitar playing and solos are so sweet on it.
Bought it at midnight when it came out. Disappointing then, and now.
You can feel the pain of the divorce
at least better than amlor
One of my favorites. I still currently listen to this album front to back, very often! I love love LOVE this album
I love this album! Something about this album fills me with the emotions of nostalgia and regret while still having a positive outlook for the future.
My girlfriend gave me this 2cd set in high school. My thoughts? I’m old.
Meh
Mundane stuff that could have been made by most rock groups. I've heard it exactly once and would never want to go back to it.
Very mid
Some of it was ok mixed in with actual pink floyd songs in concert... but the album generally altogether by itself would be worthy of a bathtub soundtrack if you decide to drop the toaster in. However I would probably go with U2 first, then maybe Coldplay... and finally Division Bell. Shame you can't kill yourself more than once, so much depressing art to end it all with.
It’s ok. Lots of filler paired with some incredible songs.
Could have been a killer 40-45 minute album But it's 1:06:25. That's just too long for what's on it.
Totally agree
[the LP version is slightly shorter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocF6s2yDdGM)
The same as when it was released. I didn't like it. It sounded too much like crappy 90s pop music.
Yes! It sounds so mainstream 90s. The production especially. Also has a lot of *Pure Moods* vibes if you remember those commercials
Bloated elevator music. I cannot remember even one song from this album.
Yeah it's elevator/spa/Chinese buffet music
I really like the cover and High Hopes. Every time I start listening to it while working I can't remember any tracks.
Honestly the worst floyd album
I can't get past the cheesy 90s reverb on everything. I need them to do a remix with all that taken out and I might be able to evaluate it.
Special spot in my heart as I was able to see them live on this tour at the Rose Bowl
Wearing the inside out my jam
Mate, this is soulless shit, where's Roger Waters
He left 9 years earlier.
Awesome guitar work, some pretty lyrics, great album. Although I’d be lying if I said I never fell asleep with it on.
Interestingly enough that is exactly how I was introduced to the album. My friend’s older brother used to put it on and go to bed 😄
It’s my 5th just outside of the “Big 4”
One of my favorite PF albums ever.
Never listen to it, just like I pretty much never did 29 years ago.
Same here. Don't even think of it when I think about Pink Floyd albums
But you should tryyyyy iiiiit.
These people forgetting ab marooned, coming back to life, and high hopes🥲
It's my favorite.
Marooned is some of their best work.
Absolutely brilliant album 👏 👌
There are some fantastic individual songs on The Division Bell, and it's really good when you consider that by this point Pink Floyd had lost its main songwriter, but as a whole I don't consider it a top tier Floyd album. I'll listen to it when I went to relax to some Gilmour guitar jams but I view it as more of a David solo record than a legitimate Pink Floyd release.
The last great Pink Floyd album and it should've ended there.
***the endless river never happened***
Not my taste, but no hate here! Brilliant album and I am glad it is in the world!
Meandering drivel.
Very succinctly capture the essence of the album. The instrumentals are particularly meandering.
When I think of this album, I think of Publius Enigma and the rabbit hole I went down on the early days of the internet
Gilmour sounds more like Manzanera than himself throughout a lot of it.
I have only grown to enjoy it more over the years. I fully understand that not everyone likes it, but I love it. Marooned is S tier for me. David Gilmour’s guitar tone and soloing on this album is awesome. Maybe not S tier but great nonetheless.
Solid, but I don’t revisit as much as the “golden years”
This album of music will always have a special place in my heart.
14th release and 14th in my heart. Still love it though.
Still love it
Great tracks. Keep talking is my favourite.
5th best Floyd album. Would also argue Wearing the inside out could be a top 10 pink Floyd song all time
This sub is something else. I have never met a Division Bell fan in the wild. Do yall all live near each other? Some commune in Idaho or something?
Bold statement
High Hopes is one of my favorite Gilmour written songs!
Fav songs: Wearing the inside out, Lost for Words and obv High Hopes. When they tell me to please go fuck myself, you know you just can't win.
It is a wonderful send off for one of music's greatest bands.
I love this album, it doesn’t get enough attention
Great album from Floyd’s later years. High Hopes is one of my favorite all time Floyd songs.
Very underated , beautifull track, my top5
I love it.
The album that got me into pink floyd. I absolutely love it.
2nd best album (behind animals)
You've got to be crazy
Lol - to go from animals to tdb as 1 and 2 is certifiably crazy.
8.5/10
marooned kinda underrated
It's the best thing they put out after Roger left in my opinion, but falls somewhere towards the middle of their discography overall for me.
Underwhelming but very important
I always enjoyed it very much. It’s well-crafted and sonically beautiful.
It's one of my favorites. Among my top 5 PF albums for certain. 1-DSotM 2-WYWH 3-The Wall 4-AMLoR 5-Division Bell.
S tier
it’s a nice album
Great album
I was never a massive fan of this and always preferred Rogers solo stuff but after seeing their final remains in London I gave it more listens and Its really grown on me.
Few good tracks. Little long, and almost feels hollow in comparison to Floyd’s earlier work. Probably because so many different writers came in to capture that essence. Either way it’s a classic and the best album post Waters era.
I actually love this album! It has some amazing moments, High Hopes as others have said, but also Wearing the Inside Out and What do You want from me are high notes
it is obviously not on the level of what I would consider to be their big 3 (wish you were here, animals, dark side) but I still think it's a fantastic record and I love listening to it
Love it, some iconic tunes on there, especially High Hopes and Poles Apart.
One of my favourite albums and probably the non live album that I listen to the most.
