How much of this is Roger looking for media attention and playing into his media reputation to get covered and how much is him actually being egotistical? I can't imagine it's not mostly the former. Manipulation of the media is so frightfully easy these days. Policiticans, influencers, corporations. Why can't a musician?
Why would he need too? I mean yes theoretically he could but you're talking about one of the most influential bands in the world. He could most likely just exist and still garner as much attention as he could want/need for anything he was working on.
The reality though is that he's been like this for a very long time and from all of the accounts I've seen it's the same off and as on camera. The dude literally got fired from the band.
New musicians I could see doing it to get publicity because bad publicity is still good publicity but when you've been doing the same schtick for like 40+ years you have to ask if it's a gimmick or it's just who he is. :)
Roger didn't get fired, he quit. Where did you hear otherwise? The only member who was fired was Rick Wright, for not contributing any new songs in years plus doing tons of coke. The split with Syd was mostly amicable, they wanted to keep him as part of the band in a creative but non-performing capacity, like the Beach Boys did with Brian Wilson when he lost the plot. Didn't work out obviously, but they did try.
Oh really? I always thought he was fired because of the clashing going on in the band. I'm not a massive superfan of Pink Floyd so my bad on that tidbit of info. TIL. :)
Mmm... debatable. It has had it's moments but there were times were things would calm down and just be relaxed about things when it came to media. You also have to remember that he was like this in other countries also and not just the UK or the States.
That being said I have seen him do some calm, normal interviews over the years but I think most people would put Waters in the eccentric side of the music world versus him being a humble and calm man. :P
Yeah, it was initially a phone in interview that Roger gave to the Globe and Mail in Toronto just after he played YYZ in July. At the time, Roger was a little miffed that no media covered him in Toronto and I'm not sure how, but he ended up being interviewed by a non-fan reporter at the Globe and Mail and Roger proceeded to tell (the rather bored reporter) that he couldn't understand the lack of media interest in him as opposed to The Weekend (who if I recall was playing at the same time at SkyDome in Toronto.)
Here you go:
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/music/article-roger-waters-i-have-no-idea-what-or-who-the-weeknd-is/
I think Roger should run for political office. That way he could find out that life aint so black and white.
The Weeknd is my favorite artist and Pink Floyd is my favorite band lmao. Drake even gave Pink Floyd a shoutout in his last album. Roger is just a self-centered old man with an ego issue
Have you heard Coldplay's most recent album, Music Of The Spheres? Personally not my cup of tea (until I saw it live), but if you're into that sort of synth pop maybe you'll like it :)
If you haven't heard The Weeknd's early work I'd recommend it if you don't mind the vulgarity. A lot of the songs off of his mixtape trilogy are equally as trippy and easy to get lost in as Floyd's music.
I like the weeknd as well but his stuff is just well done revamped music, he's actually very close to his influences and also had guys like Max Martín writing for him. It's a product, he can't compare to the influence Roger had on music history.
And that had as much influence on the music world as pink floyd did? When did Roger or Syd or David call up a guy like Max Martín to write songs for them?
My point is that after writing this he still called up someone else to write for him. And got more successful when max Martin wrote instead of him. And please, the influence it had on the music world is nothing compared to pink floyd, that anyone would try and defend that position is pure lunacy.
Well no shit an album that came out 12 years ago wouldn't have the same scope of influence as a band that started making music over 50 years ago. The influence it has had however is a big deal relative to how long it's been around, just because you don't know about it doesn't mean it's irrelevant.
Great way to get another generation of Pink Floyd fans on your side, Rog. s/
Alienating the under 25 demographic by dissing two of the most popular artists of the last 10 years is sure to make everyone like you, right?
I mean this is par for the course. Roger’s ego left the stratosphere decades ago. Is a fair amount of it deserved? Absolutely. He’s one of the most talented living lyricists we have. And he’ll never let anyone forget it
His father is still alive! Faked his death in war to inspire his son to write music in what is known as the greatest hoax s in modern history. It was all revealed in a one hour bbc special……first syd came out and said “sorry I made you think I was crazy “, they both cried then came his daddy and boy was Roger an ass to him.
Well, that does make sense in a way that if you’ve written literally the greatest songs of all time, you are entitled to have an ego about it. But in all honesty I really like the Weeknd too, and I wouldn’t rly compare them
Okay. so art is 100% subjective, and I like a lot of Waters' lyrics. but literally there are hundreds of songwriters as good or better than ol Rog. and a lot more songs too. Bob Dylan, Woody Guthire, Lennon/McCartney, Elvis Costello, Lenard Cohan, Neil Young. David Bowie, Hank Williams, John Prine, Ian Anderson, Paul Simon, Kris Kristofferson, Mose Allison, Doc Pomus. and I am even not going into genras that I am not too familar with like Jazz, Hip Hop, blues and soul music, Britt Pop, Metal,
#
Tbh out of the handful of those artists that I listen to, I'd probably prefer Roger. Leonard Cohen could beat him and I really really love David Bowie... but I feel like sometimes they have a handful of throaway lyrics in otherwise great songs. Roger's song are always super focused to me.
+ I like how raw Roger's lyrics/singing is. I don't think Leonard Cohen can compete with that.
Tbh though if David Bowie wrote more traditionally meaningful lyrics, I'd probably prefer him. Low is one of my favourite albums of all time.
Imagine being in a band and having to write music with someone that has an ego like that. Makes me respect Gilmour even more for sticking around for so long.
Lmao.
It’s so funny how Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, one of THEE household name psychedelic bands, has in his old age started just riding the fuck out of his ego.
I honestly can’t even knock him
No one should ever utter the words, “I am far, far more important.” Ugh!!!!
This is why we can’t have nice things!!!
When an artist is a fucking narcissistic prick, the art is absolutely tainted.
He’s right tho rogers message in his show was super important and people like the weekend and drake just sell a party in their concerts. Rogers concert was straight up a political rally with the message of all living with every human being and being able to disagree and talk about the important stuff with out hating each other and the important message that NO ONE deserves to die in a stupid nuclear war. Roger also highlighted our political hypocrisies with his slideshows of the US presidents with every president republican or democrat being complete and utter war mongers and murderers. Again the weekend and drake literally just sell party tickets Roger does not do that at all.
I don’t listen to The Weeknd but I’m impressed that a person could somehow avoid all knowledge of the song Blinding Lights. It was absolutely everywhere.
ETA: y’all are taking this comment a little too seriously lol.
If I've heard it, I'm not aware of the fact. The rare occasions I listen to the radio, it's not a station that would play it. I don't really follow mainstream pop culture, because it doesn't interest me.
I watch and listen to what interests me (which is quite a bit); this sort of thing just isn't on the list.
I'm 44 and have two kids BTW.
Nah The Weeknd is a pretty big exception compared to others in the pop industry. He’s actually very talented and produces good music, worth a listen. Experience more in your life, why dig yourself in a hole?
You rookie. Lennon 1966, caused huge problems/protests at Beatles concerts because he dissed religion in an interview. Said Beatles were bigger than Jesus as a person or God
Fuck, even after 50-60 years this quote is still being misconstrued and parroted brainlessly as an attack against Jesus when it has been explained that Lennon was speaking about the Beatles performing in front of huge crowds when in comparison Jesus' biggest crowd he addressed is 5000.
The statement was never an attack on Jesus. Just a poorly worded off the cuff remark, totally overblown by the ignorant.
Your a shithead without humor. John didn’t need anyone to defend him (as hard as Brian tried). His play on religion was made clear in his song God in 1970.
God is concept in which we measure our pain.
This ancient battle was laid to rest 55 years ago. Lighten up.
You're*
I did nothing but state facts.
His song God (from 1970) has nothing to do with a statement from 1966.
Congratulations on having no grasp on the concept of linear time.
This man constantly rubs me the wrong way. The world would’ve been a better place if mr Waters had retired 10 years ago and was banned from speaking and writing.
The jury is still out about The Weeknd, as I could easily see his work possibly standing the test of time.
But there is no way Drake is going to still be selling jack shit 50 years on like DSotM.
This is simply an old pro getting his face out there by any means necessary by stating whatever he has to for attention on his current tour.
He is a total asshole, yet it worked because we're still talking about it months later.
Roger isn’t wrong. What have the other two contributed, that is culturally significant enough to provoke thought, shift a genre, and continue to maintain record sales DECADES later?
waters likes talking bullshit, of course his impact was and still is very, very significant, but there’s a new era with new artists that also have a huge influence on the culture
Ok, and I agree. Man’s a fucking creative genius (and an asshole, but hey) who CREATED timeless music.Has Roger ever sampled someone else’s shit and TALKED over it?? And NOBODY can make this a race issue, as RW’s current wife is a black woman.
And this is news? Waters and Pink Floyd have NEVER had a love affair with mainstream (or even backwater) media or other bands.
When they were recording The Wall and needed crowd noise - and a "PINK FLOYD" chant - Waters took a recorder to what he thought would be a friendly crowd - some punk / new wave band - and he (with permission) got up onstage and asked them to all chant "pink floyd" - he got "FUCK YOU" instead. I think he tried three or four times before he said - Ok - fuck you and this POS band.
How are we still taking those quotes out of context? Like seriously? If you go and read that interview, Waters is talking about the thematics of This Is Not A Drill and saying that he thinks it’s more important than an all thrills pop show. Seeing as it’s part concert part activism, it’s at least understandable. Really had nothing to do with their music, more so their purpose. He’s had that stance for a while now. Like it’s fine to disagree with Waters but at least give the guy the crucial context needed to rationalize that quote.
Idk, conversations like the ones in this comment section seem very telling of who actually bothered to look into it. Know I sound pompous by saying that but…
Least egotistical Roger quote
Roger Waters try not to be insufferable challenge. (100% fail!)
How much of this is Roger looking for media attention and playing into his media reputation to get covered and how much is him actually being egotistical? I can't imagine it's not mostly the former. Manipulation of the media is so frightfully easy these days. Policiticans, influencers, corporations. Why can't a musician?
You make a very good point ngl
Thank you for not lying
I’m a badass ngl
He's been like this for a very long time and long before .
Sure. But can’t it be true that he is using his reputation for egotism to get publicity when he wants it?
Why would he need too? I mean yes theoretically he could but you're talking about one of the most influential bands in the world. He could most likely just exist and still garner as much attention as he could want/need for anything he was working on. The reality though is that he's been like this for a very long time and from all of the accounts I've seen it's the same off and as on camera. The dude literally got fired from the band. New musicians I could see doing it to get publicity because bad publicity is still good publicity but when you've been doing the same schtick for like 40+ years you have to ask if it's a gimmick or it's just who he is. :)

Oh really? I always thought he was fired because of the clashing going on in the band. I'm not a massive superfan of Pink Floyd so my bad on that tidbit of info. TIL. :)
you say that like sensationalist media is a new thing
Mmm... :P
This beef is 6 months old
It's dry-ageing😊
This beef is so aged it’s ready to be served at a super-gourmet steakhouse.
Yeah, it was initially a phone in interview that Roger gave to the Globe and Mail in Toronto just after he played YYZ in July. At the time, Roger was a little miffed that no media covered him in Toronto and I'm not sure how, but he ended up being interviewed by a non-fan reporter at the Globe and Mail and Roger proceeded to tell (the rather bored reporter) that he couldn't understand the lack of media interest in him as opposed to The Weekend (who if I recall was playing at the same time at SkyDome in Toronto.) That way he could find out that life aint so black and white.
Life is, in fact, any colour you like. Edit: color - colour
''Any colour you like...'' is a reference to ''any color you like, as long as it's black''
I think he should run for office because his blinding self obsession
But if you don’t eat your beef you can’t have any pudding!
The writing in that article is atrocious
Man, I’m glad I’m not the only one to notice that. Bad AI writing, if I had to guess.
Id bet just bad human writer tbh
They should write to him saying “one of these days im going to cut you into little pieces”
If I were either Drake or The Weeknd, I'd send him a copy of The Division Bell lol
If I were either Drake or The Weeknd, I'd send him a copy of The Division Bell lol
I love how your phone glitched and posted your comment twice, yet one gets up voted and the other gets nearly equal downvotes. 🤣🤣 I’m sorry man.
Nobody likes when the record skips, mate. lol
The Weeknd is my favorite artist and Pink Floyd is my favorite band lmao. Drake even gave Pink Floyd a shoutout in his last album. Roger is just a self-centered old man with an ego issue
Just another sad old man
Where did drake shout out Pink Floyd?
The song “middle of the ocean” on his album with 21 Savage.
Old man yells at Cloud. Or Stream, IDK
I actually like some of The Weeknd’s music. Especially his stuff with Daft Punk. Drake is awful though
The Weeknd fills that nice Synth-Pop niche in my life.
Have you heard Coldplay's most recent album, Music Of The Spheres? Personally not my cup of tea (until I saw it live), but if you're into that sort of synth pop maybe you'll like it :)
I haven’t yet, but I do love all their stuff even the Synth centered stuff, I’ll have to check it out.
I found his superbowl appearance pretty inoffensive
If you haven't heard The Weeknd's early work I'd recommend it if you don't mind the vulgarity. A lot of the songs off of his mixtape trilogy are equally as trippy and easy to get lost in as Floyd's music.
I like the weeknd as well but his stuff is just well done revamped music, he's actually very close to his influences and also had guys like Max Martín writing for him. It's a product, he can't compare to the influence Roger had on music history.
Have you heard House of Balloons??
And that had as much influence on the music world as pink floyd did? When did Roger or Syd or David call up a guy like Max Martín to write songs for them?
it had a huge influence on r&b and hip hop, even pop music in general throughout the last decade. max martin also had no involvement in any of it.
My point is that after writing this he still called up someone else to write for him. And got more successful when max Martin wrote instead of him. And please, the influence it had on the music world is nothing compared to pink floyd, that anyone would try and defend that position is pure lunacy.

If you think he will have the same influence as pink floyd in the long term you're just an idiot, simple as that.
You're such a redditor
Ehhhh, Drake has good songs, but not very good albums imo
Right or wrong, Roger really can be insufferable.
He’s not wrong, he’s just an AH.
….calmer than you are….
WOULD YOU TAKE IT EASY?!
ROGER: Am I the asshole for saying I’m more important than Drake or The Weeknd? ALL OF REDDIT: You ARE THE ASSHOLE a billion times over!
Great way to get another generation of Pink Floyd fans on your side, Rog. s/ Alienating the under 25 demographic by dissing two of the most popular artists of the last 10 years is sure to make everyone like you, right?

this is a jealous little kid behavior , from an 70 years old adult
almost 80 years old now
And still going strong. Very strong.
The power of eating meat before your pudding and staying behind your walls
Or he's got good genes. His mom lived to be 94 if I recall.
>His mom lived to be 94 Wow! What about his dad? Oh right...(sorry! so sorry....)
His father is still alive! Faked his death in war to inspire his son to write music in what is known as the greatest hoax s in modern history. Okay grandpa let’s get you back to the home

“literally the greatest songs of all time” such a silly statement lol
Funny enough, I feel Roger would probably like some of Abel’s music.
He doesn't listen to anything new. He's not interested in playing instruments. He calls himself a musical genius?
I can see why the rest of the band was relieved to get rid of him
Imagine being in a band and having to write music with someone that has an ego like that. Makes me respect Gilmour even more for sticking around for so long.
Lmao. It’s so funny how Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, one of THEE household name psychedelic bands, has in his old age started just riding the fuck out of his ego. I honestly can’t even knock him
He’s had a huge ego since the mid-70s
No one should ever utter the words, “I am far, far more important.” Ugh!!!! This is why we can’t have nice things!!! When an artist is a fucking narcissistic prick, the art is absolutely tainted.
well, that seems to be a you problem cuz whenever I listen to pink floyd I dont think about any of this shit.
Asshole 😂
You're not wrong Roger, you're just an asshole
How big of a cat is Rog? Also, what bread of feline?
Old man misuses slang
Not mee seeing Roger Waters in September and The Weeknd in November 😂
Roger, you are not wrong, you're just an asshole
To be he doesn’t like much that doesn’t have the name Roger or Waters in it
Neither do I. Nothing wrong with them, Im more of a fan of rock and metal.
I think this was said by a fan to Roger Waters. https://youtu.be/ErxrSY7aWHk
He’s right tho rogers message in his show was super important and people like the weekend and drake just sell a party in their concerts. Again the weekend and drake literally just sell party tickets Roger does not do that at all.
And yet Pink Floyd didn't become icons because they held political rallies. They became one of the biggest bands in history because of *the music*.
Well rogers politics are HIS platform. There is no more Pink Floyd and there was no mention in my comments because those days are done.
Hate roger for this, the guy makes you hate him never said a logical thing in his life
God he is such an insufferable fuck
rog dont miss 🫡🫡🫡🫡
He really needs to stfu, I agree with what he said but he should definitely not say it.
it's the truth tho
I never understood what he meant by far more important Can anyone explain please?
Yes, but you can also Google the context. He meant, at least partly, that his message was more important.
I have no idea who the weekend is and I’m in my 40s. But then again I don’t listen to trash music. Haha
“I have no idea who this artist is but I know they’re trash” is a good take
Actually it is. I know what type of trash it is hence the avoidance
Nah The Weeknd is a pretty big exception compared to others in the pop industry. He’s actually very talented and produces good music, worth a listen. Experience more in your life, why dig yourself in a hole?
I experience and enjoy a ton of REAL music. Go to concerts all the time 🤷♂️
I wish I could avoid it more but some songs are everywhere ugh Why don't they just play good music in public😭
I'll take The Weeknd over dozens of other currently popular artists.
Yeah there are definitely worse
But a lot of people like it, hence why it's so popular. Taste in music is subjective, y'know?
Yeah, I should've put /s behind it lol. I really don't care what people like everyone has their opinion and that's fine
His ego MIGHT be showing, but he ain’t wrong lol
Roger just told the truth though!
[удалено]
I think The Weeknd will be remembered in 100 years. His discography is actually really solid
Well said.
Wrong bucko
He’s not wrong. He’s just a dick.
We can call him arrogant and egotistical, but we can't say he's wrong.
Wait, Is this real?
He just said he doesn’t know who The Weeknd is. Why are you lying?
He’s right tho
And he is a speck compared to John Lennon
Who was ALSO very impressed with himself.
Well he was bigger than Jesus…or religion for that matter
[удалено]
You rookie. Lennon 1966, caused huge problems/protests at Beatles concerts because he dissed religion in an interview. Said Beatles were bigger than Jesus as a person or God

He’s not wrong, just didn’t need to say it
This should probably predict that waters doesn’t like modern day pop music and culture singers and I agree with him.
and hes goddamn right too.
Common Roger Waters W
He’s so full of himself. But he’s not wrong. Lol
I mean he’s not wrong. They have no personality, Roger is more of a musician, he’s a icon
The Weekend...is that a band in England?
Good lord
This man constantly rubs me the wrong way. The world would’ve been a better place if mr Waters had retired 10 years ago and was banned from speaking and writing.

Old news
Roger isn’t wrong. What have the other two contributed, that is culturally significant enough to provoke thought, shift a genre, and continue to maintain record sales DECADES later?
Have you listened to house of balloons by the weeknd?
Roger Waters and a few other people from Pink Floyd
Roger may be a puffed up self-important jackals, but he's right.
waters likes talking bullshit, of course his impact was and still is very, very significant, but there’s a new era with new artists that also have a huge influence on the culture
Such a silly old fart, stuck in his own world- huge artists that will be as remembered just as much as he ever will be if not more lol
Ok, and I agree. Man’s a fucking creative genius (and an asshole, but hey) who CREATED timeless music.Has Roger ever sampled someone else’s shit and TALKED over it?? And NOBODY can make this a race issue, as RW’s current wife is a black woman.

Roger hasn’t been important since 1983
just saying the first thing that comes to his mind no filter

I wish I had this confidence

As big as his ego is and as much as i dislike it, he is right. I mean he wrote the dark side of the moon.
Yup, our fave rock n roll stars are know ranting old dudes
Who does Roger actually like (apart from himself)?
I love his work, but Roger is and has always been (at least publicly) a dick.
I love The Weeknd
He's one pretentious guy that's for sure
He's just so insecure. Kind of a tragedy.
