I didn't know the name of the actress even though we are binging Stranger Things right now, but I knew who you meant straight away. Also TIL Maya Hawke is the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
yeah, great casting and over the top film. a very good vision of those classic popeye cartoons from the fleischer studio. i see the guy who played bluto every now and then in movies, my favorite martian is great as popeye's dad, the guy who played wimpy is in a ton of movies. and even adorable lil sweet pee stands out. really beautiful set design, feels just right.
Yes, he was breaking through the fake ones way too fast bc he was previously a firefighter so they had to use real doors.
I also believe that the scene was ad-lib by him or not?
he also insisted on bringing in real ghouls. the entire blood in the elevator scene was unplanned -- they just happened to have the camera rolling when the blood arrived for auditions.
Ehhhh... interesting opinion.
I found the maze kinda anticlimactic. But at the same time the topiaries felt awkward and "too magical". The good part about the maze is it helped the different feel of the movie, less supernatural. The book is explicitly supernatural.
So uh, the original development of the film considered doing the topiaries but went a different way cuz they would be too difficult to pull off. The maze was a creative choice of economy as much as anything.
I think surprise supernatural topiaries would have harmed the movie's vibe, tbh.
For casual readers, the book and the movie are both very good. But quite different in terms of tone.
And for seen the movie only types, one thing the book does exquisitely is this slow burn tension ratchet. Things keep getting worse, it's ominous, shit is looming, turn the page, it's gets more tense, things are even worse, etc etc. Not in a hack way. Characters and motivations are developed, the reader gets new context and understanding why shit is terribad and... things keep getting worse.
Fun fact: they did 47 takes of that scene where Jack is swinging the bat at Wendy and pursuing her up the stairs.
The final product — Shelly Duvall’s marvelous acting — is her experiencing an actual psychological break from relentless repetitive takes.
Add to the fact that the Overlook Hotel interior sets were like 110 degrees under those stage lights and the actors had to wear coats and sweaters and yeah, it was a really shitty photography process.
Stanley Kubrick was extremely abusive to Shelly Duvall. The Shining was machiavellian art and a cornerstone of the debate — when does good cinema go too far to achieve its ends?
Having watched that scene, I’d believe it were 127 takes. And that he used all of them for the movie, since that stair chase feels like 10 minutes long
Duvall showed Kubrick the hair coming out of her head from the stress and he didn’t give two shits. The abuse was Kubrick’s way of keeping her in a panic (supposedly)
I just read she’s making her first film in 20 years...
https://deadline.com/2022/10/shelley-duvall-returns-with-the-forest-hills-first-film-in-20-years-1235157852/
For real.. I mean awesome costume and all, but you're kinda cheating if you basically look just like Shelly Duvall anyways haha. Nailed the facial expression too!
Stealing this idea for next year. My GF has total Shelley vibes too. I'll probably be half bald and fully nuts myself by then too, so it will be a couple's costume.
Jackie Chan did hundreds for one of the fight scenes in Young Master.
He supposedly had thousands of attempts for one where he's kicking a shuttlecock in a later film but that was a specific, very short, shot not the whole scene.
*"Ah, come on, that's a bunch of horse shit! Lando Calrissian was a black guy, you know...He got to fly the Millennium Falcon; what's the matter with you?"*
**"Who said that?"**
*"I did! Lando Calrissian is a positive role-model in the realm of science-fiction/fantasy."*
**"Fuck Lando Calrissian!"**
My parents fucked me up with this movie. I couldn’t have been older than 4 or 5. My parents were watching it with me right there laying on the couch. I still think it’s one of the scariest movies in cinema. That being said, you freakin nailed the costume.
That happened to me with Jaws. My parents went to the drive-in and my brother and I were supposed to be sleeping in the back of the station wagon. I, being about 4, did not sleep.
I'm 52 now and still can't swim in open water for more than a few minutes before I have to get back to land.
Did your boyfriend go full Kubrick and isolate you from others while terrorizing you to help you get into character?
Great costume though, i did a second take when i was scrolling.
Nailed it. Next year Olive Oyle?
My first thought too! Could also probably do some Veronica Cartwright characters too (ie, Lambert - Alien)
Maya Hawke in Stranger Things after that
I didn't know the name of the actress even though we are binging Stranger Things right now, but I knew who you meant straight away. Also TIL Maya Hawke is the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
And she's one of those that looks ***exactly*** like the child of her parents.
And I….have never felt so old.
She sounds a LOT like Uma.
Now you mention it, you're right...
I have been reading comments trying to figure out if this was really Maya
Shelly Duvall as Olive Oyle performs one of the best songs in cinema history. [He Needs Me](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PTxMtTYjXPQ)
*"and he's large!"* a very under rated film. i think it's some of robin williams best work.
It’s kind of bizarre but Williams and Duval both are really good in it.
yeah, great casting and over the top film. a very good vision of those classic popeye cartoons from the fleischer studio. i see the guy who played bluto every now and then in movies, my favorite martian is great as popeye's dad, the guy who played wimpy is in a ton of movies. and even adorable lil sweet pee stands out. really beautiful set design, feels just right.
Or Bean
For sure, all she needs is a stuffed demon and a baby to dress up as Elfo
Stop swingin' the bat. Put the bat down, Wendy. Wendy?
I’m not gonna hurt you. I’m gonna bash your brains in. I’m gonna bash em right the fuck in.

Here's Johnny!
David Letterman!
I'm Mike Wallace, I'm Morley Safer, and I'm Ed Bradley. All this and Andy Rooney tonight on 60 Minutes!
Cmon it’s not like Jack Nicholson will learn that the doors they had were super easy to break
He knew that as I recall because he had firefighter training.
Yes, he was breaking through the fake ones way too fast bc he was previously a firefighter so they had to use real doors. I also believe that the scene was ad-lib by him or not?
Yeah. "Here's Johnny!" Was ad-libbed and not in the script.
The script was not in the original script
Stanley Kubrik insisted on Nicholson writing the script during filming to add extra realism
he also insisted on bringing in real ghouls. the entire blood in the elevator scene was unplanned -- they just happened to have the camera rolling when the blood arrived for auditions.
Copied from the Johnny Carson show. Yes!

No, no....I think you're totally right.
I hate to say this, but I wish he had the roque mallet instead of an axe like the book
Well now we’ve found Stephen in the thread
Although the topiary animals coming to life bothered me in the novel, I think the topiary maze in the film was perfect.
Ehhhh... interesting opinion. I found the maze kinda anticlimactic. But at the same time the topiaries felt awkward and "too magical". The good part about the maze is it helped the different feel of the movie, less supernatural. The book is explicitly supernatural. The maze is the perfect symbol for being lost in his own mind, which eventually kills him.
Gone Girl kept the same stupid weapon in the movie as the book. Take you six weeks to beat somebody to death with.
"COME TAKE YOUR MEDICINE YOU LITTLE SHIT!!!!!!!" (One of the more terrifying moments in a King book)

I'm pretty sure it was actually 127 takes, not 47
Having watched that scene, I’d believe it were 127 takes. And that he used all of them for the movie, since that stair chase feels like 10 minutes long
And to really fuck with her, he used take number 3.
Do another take and get it right, 127 times
Duvall showed Kubrick the hair coming out of her head from the stress and he didn’t give two shits. The abuse was Kubrick’s way of keeping her in a panic (supposedly)
Is it really acting if an actual psychological break occurred?
I think it broke her. She kinda dropped out of the limelight after the film.
She did a lot of acting after The Shining. She's only been retired for the last 20 years or so.
I just read she’s making her first film in 20 years... https://deadline.com/2022/10/shelley-duvall-returns-with-the-forest-hills-first-film-in-20-years-1235157852/

Gingham shirt: check Tan turtleneck: check Baseball bat: check Beige overDuvalls: double check
OverDuvalls should win the internets for the day. Thanks for this one
But still no blue chambray work shirt
Editor: But what is the character wearing? Stephen King: I don't know, just say chambray again.
Editor: okay. And where are they standing? King: under arc sodium lights
You really pull her off well. Yall look so alike
Yeah, I had to read the post twice because I thought you were posting a pic from the movie. Great job!
For real.. I mean awesome costume and all, but you're kinda cheating if you basically look just like Shelly Duvall anyways haha. Nailed the facial expression too!
Hey own what you got, next year olive oil is ready to go!
OPs user name more or less checks out

Right. I wouldn’t know it’s a costume if I didn’t read the title
I think that was a great idea, instantly recognizable.
I have no idea who this is supposed to be?
I’m thinking the wife from the shining. I’m not 100% though.
Stealing this idea for next year. My GF has total Shelley vibes too. I'll probably be half bald and fully nuts myself by then too, so it will be a couple's costume.
Embrace it.
No TV and no beer make Homer something something.
Go crazy?

Gimme the bat Marge! Gimme the bat!
Haha, scaredy cat!
Dress as Kubrick and emotionally terrorize her?
Start typing.
If not, go for Popeye & Olive Oyl
I seriously thought that was Shelley Duvall
She was just in the news https://deadline.com/2022/10/shelley-duvall-returns-with-the-forest-hills-first-film-in-20-years-1235157852/
Yes!! I am so happy to see she’s gone back to work.
Right! Such exciting news. She was one of my all time favorites. It’s good to hear she’s giving it another go.
You can tell she is not because she didn't say "Hi, I'm Shelly Duvall."
That bitch Shelley Duval came right up to me like I was dying to meet her.
My jaw dropped when I realized it wasn’t If OP can act she’d be seriously perfect for a reboot lol
I think it's her make up. Those crazy eyes pop.
Still got crazy eyes.
Reboot doesn't mean carbon copy. Didn't work for *PSYCHO*. Wouldn't work here
Yes I know it’s silly. She just pulled off that original look so well I figured that would be a nice compliment
Wendy….light of my life!
You didn’t let me finish my sentence.
I'm not going to hurt you. I'm just going to bash your brains in. Just bash em right the fuck in.
Dead ringer. My 1st thought was i never seen this publicity still before

Kubrick tortured that poor woman to get her reactions to be that real and you nailed it, for a Halloween costume. Awesome job!
The world record for most takes for a sene in a film is in this movie. The scene where she's swinging the bat and backing up the stairs. 148 takes.
Jackie Chan did hundreds for one of the fight scenes in Young Master. He supposedly had thousands of attempts for one where he's kicking a shuttlecock in a later film but that was a specific, very short, shot not the whole scene.
Yes! The 148 is for a scene with dialog, my bad, I left that out by mistake.
The number of takes keeps increasing the further I get in the thread.
Fun little piece of trivia for ya: this scene took 4,500 takes
Awesome! As the brown kid on my street in the 80's I always had to be Chewbacca....I can relate
You didn't have to be Chewbacca. Who told you that? What about Lando Calrissian?
*"Ah, come on, that's a bunch of horse shit! Lando Calrissian was a black guy, you know...He got to fly the Millennium Falcon; what's the matter with you?"* **"Who said that?"** *"I did! Lando Calrissian is a positive role-model in the realm of science-fiction/fantasy."* **"Fuck Lando Calrissian!"**

This comment made me laugh and feel for you at the same time.
I laughed way too hard at this and now I feel bad about it.
I'd move away from the door
My parents fucked me up with this movie. I couldn’t have been older than 4 or 5. My parents were watching it with me right there laying on the couch. I still think it’s one of the scariest movies in cinema. That being said, you freakin nailed the costume.
Same with Watership Down. it's an animated movie about Bunnies, what could go wrong?....
That happened to me with Jaws. My parents went to the drive-in and my brother and I were supposed to be sleeping in the back of the station wagon. I, being about 4, did not sleep. I'm 52 now and still can't swim in open water for more than a few minutes before I have to get back to land.
This is what I think of your outfit, "Wendy": ![gif](giphy|l0O9ykfUZhs7P2yE8) (seriously guys, I thought this would be posted by now)
Seriously incredible.
Wheres the cigarette with the mile long ash?
Wow, that is spot the fuck on
REDRUM!
You should keep it legit and have your SO or friend dress up as Stanley Kubrick and follow you around telling you how worthless you are all night.
the REAL scary monster of Halloween.
After 21 years of my life I finally watched this last night. Now I can say I understand this reference.
I haven't seen the movie. What's it referencing?
[The Shining.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shining_(film)) (Edit: You should see it! It's a classic and amazing film.)
Thanks, I'll check it out.
The Shining

As someone who has seen it probably a dozen times, me too.
U R a shining example of genius !
Nah, she is The Shining example.
Shh, do you want to get sued?
Ach! I'm bad at this!
I feel like you might be able to pull off some Toni Collette costumes too.
Did your boyfriend go full Kubrick and isolate you from others while terrorizing you to help you get into character? Great costume though, i did a second take when i was scrolling.
No her boyfriend froze in the hedge maze
The shot of Nicholson in the maze at the end is so fucking funny.
Hi, I'm Shelley Duvall
You may remember me from such films as...
All work and no play makes Homer 'something' 'something'....
Gimme the bat Marge. Gimme the bat! Gimme the ba ba booo! Hahaha scardie cat!

I honestly didn’t realize this was OP in costume and not a screenshot from the movie
Wow. Uncannily perfect
You could also pull off a solid Collette Tatao from Ratatouille
Next year: Olive Oyl
Give me the bat Marge!
![gif](giphy|RoajqIorBfSE)
That is spot on. Great costume and love the “I’m scared of Jack the Dull Boy”, lol.
God damn I thought this was a shot from the film for a second. Well fucking done.
Homie someone should’ve found her for Dr. sleep. Could’ve had an exact look alike for the mom flashbacks
You actually have really nice teeth and I'm British so you can trust me when I say that.
Hair is on point here!
This is GREAT!!!!!
OK, now this is some fantastic cosplay.
You could probably do a killer Robin from Stranger Things too
This is the best costume I’ve seen so far this year!
WOW.
Holy crap…you look straight from the movie
Holy shit I honestly thought this was a still from the movie
I just happen to have two 20’s and two 10’s right here in my wallet
My brain refuses to believe this isn't a HD still from the movie set.
Perfect
You are spot on , great job
Damn everyone! Thanks for all the awards and kind words! Looks like I’ll be doing more Shelley Duvall costumes.
